  • Join us for a wonderful mid-december weekend kayak trip in beautiful Stockholm Archipelago.
This tour was organized by Friluftsfrämjandet (Swedish Outdoor Association) in Österåker. Not many people signed up for this tour so we were only 2 leaders and 2 attendees.
The weather had been pretty miserable for kayaking all week. But on Friday evening the forecast for the weekend looked so much better, particularly regarding the wind.
On Saturday we drove to Stavsnäs Vinterhamn (winter harbor) and arrived there 9 am, just after sunrise. After pulling on our drysuits, packing our kayaks and parking our cars we launched a few minutes past 10 am. There was a slight risk of fog but we were lucky and we had a very smooth paddle to Vindalsö island. We even got some sunlight to enhance the beautiful nature. With the water so calm it was easy to spot the single seal we saw. The air temperature was 1-3°C (34-36°F) during the whole weekend and water temperature around 4°C (39°F). You can see our route Stavnäs-Vindalsö on the map linked below. After about 4 hours, around sunset, we reached Vindalsö where we stayed in a rented cabin which was already heated when we got there :-) We got settled in, relaxed, had a nice dinner by the fireplace, and ended the evening with a nice sauna bath and cooled off by pouring buckets of seawater over us, brrrr.
Sunday morning;: After breakfast we packed our gear and cleaned the cabin before taking a nice stroll on the island. We launched at 10:30 am and headed southwest to go around Runmarö (see linked map below) before heading back towards Stavsnäs. After rounding the southernmost tip of Runmarö we had a nice lunch break on Koholmen with fantastic sunlit skies and water reflections!
We continued our paddle through Runmarö kanal (channel) and encountered some banks of fog when we came into the bay on westside of Runmarö. Final stretch was a calm crossing from Runmarö to Stavsnäs. It was actually the calmest crossing I have ever done here (I have done at least 20 crossings earlier) and it is mid-december! We arrived at Stavnäs at 2:20 pm
    Distances and speeds:
    Saturday: 16km (10mi), average speed when paddling 5km/h (3.1mi/h)
    Sunday: 15km (9.4mi), average speed when paddling 5.8km/h (3.6mi/h)
