    I want a BAT action! No, sadly I don't have one. What a great previous shop tour and walk thru of the actions by the owner. That Igniter 995.00 one looks like what I need to aspire to next. I like that Vampire one too. Geez they all are great what am I saying.

    Gavin, Thank you for this video!!! I have long wanted to build a custom bolt action rifle but there are simply SO MANY OPTIONS that I have no idea what to do. I have been shooting a long time and they sometimes use terminology that even I don't understand. More videos like this would be very helpful for guys like me. I have been shooting a long time but pretend that I've never touched a gun before but I wanted you to build me a custom rifle. The first step of selection of the action is the biggest. What footprints are available, what they are compatible with, and many other questions are all rolling around in my head.

    Seriously considering this for a 300 PRC Build. Too bad the TR isn't available in a Rem LA footprint. Looking at the HR... now with that said. I have read that in the past there were some issues with galling. Has this been addressed with a QPQ process or did the issue get addressed in the hardening of the SS some other way?

  • @joeldubose5762
    @joeldubose5762 3 роки тому

    I just bought one. However I'm still trying to figure out exactly what lends to the most accurate. I was going to get a DLC coated in SS, however it was explained that the heat used doesn't allow for proper alignment and contact of the tangs. Things like cocking, that upsets the rifle in the rest are a huge element. I'm told that stiffer spring 25# is more unified for ag shooting. Yet it cocks much harder. Need more details. As I'm planning on building mutlipal rifles in different calibers.

    • @dangerranger4323
      @dangerranger4323 3 роки тому

      Search around about ignition on accurate shooter.
      The biggest thing is that if you’re not achieving enough firing pin energy youre very possibly leaving some accuracy on the table. Most people won’t notice this but if you’re competing at the highest level of benchrest you will. Bats often have heavier springs than the tactical crowd likes because they aren’t willing to give up that accuracy for less bolt lift weight. In bags, cocking weight seems to upset the rifle less than closing weight, as you’re bracing against the gun. This leads to the pursuit of a neutral handoff that has zero cock on close to eliminate disruption on the closing action. This also means all the cocking action is done on open, so you need to be very careful to have adequate firing pin energy from opening.

    • @joeldubose5762
      @joeldubose5762 3 роки тому

      @@dangerranger4323 , I've been told that. Currently I have a 3 lug bolt. The short throw equals a hard bolt lift witch is causing the rifle to lift on bolt open. I'm getting around it by pulling down on the rifle when I cycle it. The problem is that takes time. The really good shooters are sending rounds very quickly with a rifle that stays on target. Mike Wison the current group record holder at 1000 yards , is sending the following round while the previous round hasn't even reached the target yet. Smooth is very important when cycling rounds like this

    • @dangerranger4323
      @dangerranger4323 3 роки тому

      @@joeldubose5762 yup, they shoot very fast. It’s those same LR BR shooters that convinced me light cocking at the expense of ignition energy is just a losing trade. I’m not suggesting your lift should be hard, I’m just saying you’re getting no where if you’re just creating inconsistencies in ignition by making it lighter. The 3 lug aspect makes your situation more understandable, you’re doing the same work in a shorter time and there’s no way around it but a heavier lift or a heavier close. Sorry you’re having issues with yours being so much it upsets the gun

      I have a tenacity, it is a very nice action. The only thing I dislike about it is that the bolt handle is thick so I can’t mount scopes super low on it, but that would only matter for a scope with a 40mm or less objective and wanting it very low. I can’t get a 50mm objective low enough to be an issue. For any tactical type build it’s no problem but for some people with hunting rifles they like small scopes super low. Do I want to build a rifle on a bat action?
    Of course I do, but I’m “cheap”.
    I use that term loosely, as I want to get a rifle that serves no purpose for me. I want to shoot long range, but going past 300yards is going to take me on a 3-4hr drive across the state. Yes, I can shoot a mile there, but it would be an all day thing to shoot like 50-100 rounds are $1-$2 a round, plus range fees, plus gas and vehicle maintenance, wear and tear, and depreciation, plus food. The thought of buying/building a rifle that’s going to be $1,500.00+ just to spend 1-2 days a year to spend a couple hundred dollars shooting 50-100 long range shots, doesn’t sound or feel cheap at all. It sounds wasteful, frivolous, and dumb. I can’t even hunt deer in my home state with it. There are no wild hogs within hundreds of miles. Coyotes are rarely seen, and you’re probably not going to get permission to hunt where they’re at.
    Not “cheap” at all! Not even remotely justifiable for any practical purpose. It’s just a fun, well hopefully fun, thing that I would like to try. 5.56/.223 at 300 is just what it is. It’s not hard, it’s fun, but it’s no 1000+ yards with a 300 prc like I want to try.
    I can’t justify a bergarra hmr and an Arken sh4, let alone a bat action, and everything needed to get the most out of it. Yes a bat action, bartlein barrel, topped with a schmidt and bender pm2, with a Huber trigger, sitting in a custom chassis with an atlas bipod sounds absolutely fantastic. That’s about as justifiable getting a Ferrari in Alaska. Sure sounds fun (for the whole 2 days a year that you can use it), but is just ludicrous to actually do it.
    Unless you are in an area where you can use it every/every other weekend, plan on rebarreling it a few times, and can afford the ammunition components to shoot it a lot, it’s just not worth it unless you just have money to burn.
    I’m probably going to get the “budget” bergarra in a
