  • In this video, I build and cover a speaker box for the rear section of a VW Beetle. It's a box made to hold two 6x9 speakers and provides another option to the aftermarket package trays made for the Beetle.

You seem to be the only one that actually breaks down the build of the box. I really appreciated the detail. The thing I noticed the most was you are very meticulous in hand tightening the screws at the end of each one. I was most wondering how were you going to smooth out the fabric on the box, and I didn't even think off rolling the box on the material vs pushing the material onto the box. Never saw those Harbor Freight corner pieces and they look like they are a must have item in your arsenal of tools. Thank you for showing CLEANING aka vacuuming after each cut. Instills in me not to be sloppy and take my time with a build and be clean WHILE working. GREAT video and thanks for taking the time out to show us how to do it right.

Thanks Mike! Appreciate the comments. Good luck on your build. Yeah, on those screws I just use a power tool to run them down then hand tighten to avoid cracking the grills. 😁

Nice build and good explanation. But if the box was mine, I would have made a vented enclosure, instead of closed one.
First I have built a closed box for two 6 1/2 inch speakers and later replaced it with a vented one and used the same speakers. It really makes a huge difference sound wise. Both boxes were calculated to the speaker parameters though.
Lovely cars by the way. 👍

Yeah, I'll vent future ones, and probably add a divider inside the box between the 2 speakers.

That’s some good craftsmanship.I admire the detail of the box and the way you explain things specially the tools you use.

Very cool way to cover the box never thought of that. Here’s the thing I know. Due to the fact that you have two speakers for both left n right you need to put a divider in the middle of the box so each speaker has its own air space. The reason is so the speakers don’t fight each other due to some songs may have sounds in the music that come out of one side n not the other. I know it happened to me and worn out my 2 15” woofers. Another thing I do is instead of wood glue I used silicone caulk makes for a better seal n air tight Anyway that’s what I found myself. Oh by the way did I mention my 2 15 “ woofers was in a 65 bug behind the back seat lol hear me coming a mile away lol.

@allenbrian72 Yes I thought of the center piece of divider wood after I had it together... won't forget on the next one. The caulk is a good idea too. Jam on!

Wow! I am building almost the exact same box for my 2003 Jeep Wrangler, so imagine my surprise when I saw your build. I mean, almost down to the measurements. Thank you for this video. Very informative and now I know that I am not crazy for wanting to build this instead of buying a box! Cheers!!

I’m a little late to the party but…I’m curious how you determined the proper airspace for the 6x9 speakers?! The reason I’m asking is because all you see anymore are the tiny 1/8’ plastic enclosures or those crappy little MDF boxes that are barely big enough for the speaker.
The 6x9 has gotten a bad rap as being “Only Designed for Free-Air” and it definitely is more than that. The 6x9 boxes that we used to build were very close to your dimensions and the performance from 2-6x9’s on a 50watt HiFonics amp shocked everyone and they thought it was 2 10” subs with horn tweeters(very old school).
Glad I was able to come across this video and like all the other comments…Great build!

Honestly, I didn’t consider air space for those. It was more about the size of the box fitting inside that luggage area. That’s something I should learn though, just to ensure the sound system install is at its best performance. I should have at least put a piece of wood inside to divide the box and give the speakers their own compartment, and then maybe a 2” whole on each end so they can “breathe.” IDK. I certainly watch enough videos on the CarAudioFabrication channel.

    • @Chief351L
      @Chief351L Рік тому

@@JayDubCustoms yes…if you have them both in the same air space you would gain quite a bit by adding a divider because they wouldn’t be fighting each other. With the porting, that’s where the 6x9 can get “Really Big”. I’ve seen some guys run tests on the smaller sized 6x9 boxes with a 2” diameter port that was 50 inches long! Haha
Not what you also could do is do a slot port on the top side of the box where it would be maybe 1 inch wide then an internal baffle board of 6-8inches and then it really sounds great. BTW…we are saying very similar things from your response about the box. Those aren’t GoTo dimensions but somewhere to start. That’s called a bandpass port.
After seeing yours, I think I’m on a quest now to build a perfect 6x9 box and I think your dimensions might be a good starting point. Can you tell me what the rough dimensions of your box is now and I’ll do some Nerd-searching on the sites that I remember having some old info.

Is that box going to interfere with how the top folds and is stored?

    • @JayDubCustoms

Um, I kinda doubt it. I think the box is low enough for the top not to touch it. We'll see. Still looking for someone that does convertible tops.
