As a former Model Y owner and a new BMW iX owner, there is no comparison. The BMW is superior in range (xDrive50) ride quality, build quality and overall experience. This is more akin to a Model X should you wish to compare it to a Tesla, however I find the interior and driving experience of the Model X to lack in terms of luxury at that price point. And can't say I'm a Tesla hater or fanboy as I owned the Model Y for two years and have been able to develop my own independent thought aside from Tesla fanboys. The only negative I can come up with with the BMW is the charging network however that will be overcome in the near future since I can start charging again at Tesla superchargers in 2024 in Canada. So BMW iX FTW.
It might be half a ton heavier but it's infinitely safer as well, lower center of gravity from the battery means less chance of rollovers (25% of fatalities) no engine up front to end up in your lap (frontal fatalities 40%) and even side crashes are lessened with the battery reinforcing side structure. If you're buying this car you're probably well off enough to care about living longer so you should account for that in any review. Oh and it's Vegemite mate. ;)
I agree with everything you just said, it’s a superb car and amazing to drive. The battery however is horrendous, it’s summer and we are lucky to get 190 from a full charge, I’m not sure how BMW came up with 267 miles because when I fully charge ours it only says 197 miles on a full charge.
Good video Quentin. And thanks for being really honest and not cosiying up to BMW. You pay all that money for a car which is equalled or bettered by cheaper competition, and plus you have approach it whilst looking in another direction. There are BEVs out there that you could gaze at all day. With this one I'd have real trouble with one minute.
Well Quentin, Physik tells you in school energy doesn’t get lost. In composting engines it turns in heat and smoke which make the combusting motor with under 30% the weakest . In an EV the energy needed to move the car is not lost, it is recaptured and fed in the batterie which make EV with over 90% efficiency the most effective one . Energy doest get lost ….
Great review Quentin. I’m reviewing a 40 Sport next month for the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Will be interesting to see the efficiency with a caravan on the back!
I’ve been waiting expectantly for another review, Sir. Great insights that I wasn’t aware of and a very fair review…Nice car, but as you said, designed years ago and now the competition is churning out newer, better efficient cars that deep down and better all round. This car will rely on its badge but that will only last so long. More car reviews asap… please! :)
The Model Y is a much better option and I am over the moon with our 23MY. The suspension has definitely been softened from previous year models and on our recent trip to the Lake District the car managed 340 miles on one charge at 106% efficiency! On another note thanks for your time Quentin for a quick chat at Fully Charged Live North. You were an absolute gentleman and it was a pleasure to talk to my favourite motoring journalist. Keep up the good work.
Think the Germans are in a different stratosphere in terms of image, prestige and quality, i believe the ix is a model x rival the model y is more a rival to a mustang
Glad you like your Model Y but you cannot compare it with the iX in terms of materials, sound etc. The iX feels like a Bentley inside. I dare say even the iX3 has a classier interior than the Y but since I put my money on it I must be biased😂
@@garytheobald9538 But how does 'image, prestige and (perceived) quality' stand up against the far superior, range, efficiency, software competency and charging network of a Tesla? Both BMW and the VW Group cars are way behind Tesla on those areas where it really matters. I've owned prestige German cars and have to see that the 'quality' in terms of engineering and reliability are more perceived than actual. Sure, my BMW 5 series back in early 2000s was a joy to drive but the cost of running the thing and its unreliability were something I wouldn't touch with a barge pole now that I'm retired. In my experience the most reliable cars were always Japanese (Toyotas, Mitsubishi, Mazda)...and I've owned cars in harsh environments in the Middle East where I worked for a while..you have to know cars will keep working. Now I am 4 years and 50,000 miles into owning a Kia e-Niro which suits our needs perfectly. It has been totally reliable, has a quality interior at least as good as a VW Golf and costs pennies to run...which for most people is all that matters.

@Shamut I've owned a M135i, M140i and the worst of the bunch F80M3. I MY opinion the M3 performance, M3Lr and MYlr which I have also owned are far superior cars. The Bemmer M3 was 65k to purchase back in 2016. 15k more than my current MYlr. 🤪
iX4 weighs 500 Kgs more than Tesla Model Y, or 1100lbs in old school. Almost 10 large bags of cement! Or perhaps 5 large adults, before you get in. Now I don't have a PhD in Physics but.....
Ridiculous comparison, it’s almost the same as comparing a Nissan leaf to the model Y, they appeal to very different buyers with different budgets etc, can’t believe for an instant that anyone considering ETron, EQE/S out and IX would venture near let alone shortlist a model 3 or Y
@@garytheobald9538 Look at buying an EV and does not have a Tesla on their short list 🤡 If anyone spends $40-50k on an EV, and doesnt check and compare range, performance and energy efficiency they are a fool imho. And no frunk on an EV is a huge red flag to poor design and engineering.
@@grahambrown42 No one was bothered about lack of frunks in an ice car, like I said appeal to different buyers with different budgets, hope you enjoy your car whatever it is 👍
What is it with BMW these days? I used to own a e39 5 series back in the late 90's a lovely looking car and wonderful to drive, though tbh very expensive to own and maintain. Current offerings are pug ugly, goodness knows what they're smoking over there in Munich. BMW could well be the first casualty of the switch to EVs, they seem are still putting development money into ICEs which will never see a return. Tesla are and will continue to eat their lunch.
If used car prices weren't as have been and wasn't a test of this particular EV I was waiting for you to say you'd found much better deal on secondhand one.
Performance similar to MY SR, Range and Efficiency worse, Storage a lot less, crap software without OTA updates, no wonderful Supercharge network, for extra £25k 😮
Well the BMW software isn't 'crap'. Also, the auto wipers work properly and so do the parking sensors & camera's, From what I can see from owners of Tesla cars - that isn't the case. Wipers running on dry & sunny days and the Tesla ' Vision' isn't fit for purpose ! Finally - on our Tusker car scheme, a standard Tesla MY LR is £100 a month more that a iX40 with £5k of options
Excellent from you, as always. Speaking of progress: I wish to God you would build this channel of yours by reviewing any cars, especially old ones. You have always been a favourite TV presenter, why not build your own channel here? See you here in another year or so, Quentin !
My car ⚡💓
Range is about 240 miles on warmer days, and that's with the option 22" wheels. This is absolutely enough for me.
What range do you get on the motorway? Thanks.
There is a bonnet latch (2 actually), but not much to see there. It's useful to clear leaves from the A/C intake.

The iX can't be a comparison to the model Y, which seems like it was built in the " Walmart car factory". This thing is way too smooth and beautiful.
