In the US Warner Brothers came out with lots of various artist comps in the late 60s and 70s. I was introduced to Jazz in the early 70s was buying Jazz records at the thrift stores. They were under a dollar back then.
Hi David, I love all those comps ! I Only collect CD's but have many that I've carefully selected over the years and often play them. Ironically, I'd like to find more of the Top Of The Pops (cover versions) CD's from the 70's, from a nostalgia point of view. Many excellent studio musicians played on many of them and they were part of my early music years.....However, there are some great comps on vinyl, that have never come out on CD like 'Urgh A Music War' and 'Concert For Kampuchea'...
I'm not even sure I have a copy of Urgh! I have a pile of compilations packed away, and I just might have one. It's a bloody crime if I don't because I was at the concert in Frejus (on holiday) when The Police performed with XTC, and UB40. Amazing.
David, of course I stayed with you right to the end. Some killer comps there. I’m going to stream that Frankie Born to Run tonight. That Island comp is outstanding. Love the Stiff comps. Why Virgin ever switched their beautiful label to those boring red and green labels I’ll never know. That Bluenote is a perfect example of a compilation that starts a journey. Great entry my friend, thanks so much for taking the time. Merry Christmas to you and the Misses. Cheers.
Cheers Jack. You're right - Virgin changing that label was a crime. The original is brilliant, so distinctive. I hope you managed to play Born to Run....turned-up to 11 of course.
The Pillow and Prayers sounds like a great comp.. ZTT artists were always interesting..i loved that Propaganda album from the mid 80s. Lovely looking pink island comp. The Virgin comp sounds like it has a lot of non album or alternative take tracks, and i guess that was part of the marketing of them. Great to get a letter from " Fluff!!" Nice one David. I might just have to have a crack at this one myself.
Have a go Rob. It was nice to dust off some great old comps. I'll dig out that Fluff letter soon enough - I've an idea where it is. That 'V' double LP is well worth seeking out. I might be slightly wrong, but perhaps all the tracks are exclusive versions. By the way, there's a 3CD comp that has some of these tracks (and more) called 'Losing Our Virginity'. I have a copy of that lying around here. It's great, but doesn't beat the vinyl.
If I found that Nice Enough To Eat compilation for a dollar (or one pound..), then I would buy it without a second thought. Funny enough, there's another Island comp' i.e., Strangely Strange But Oddly Normal - An Island Anthology 1967-1972, thus highlighting the folk side of their catalog of that time which I am listening to via streaming on repeat when I am out right now. They first released it as a 3 CD box set in the early 2000s I think.., Nice selection Monsieur 🙂
Hi Romauld, I have that 3CD Island set. That label certainly put out some brilliant (and very cheap) compilations around 1970. Fantastic music, much of which has stood the test of time!
“I’ve got loads of them, unlike Embryonic”…”They were cheap as chips”…That Cherry Red record is something I’d like. Same with that Stateside compilation. “Your tastes begin to expand”…college radio was my introduction to jazz. My parents loved it, but I didn’t begin to get on board until my late 20s. I actually have a nice repress of The Sermon by Jimmy Smith on the legendary Blue Note label. ✌️
That 'What's happening Stateside' was a huge album for me. I remember buying it the week John Peel announced The Smiths had split. 'Working On Your Case' by the O'jays sent me off into the world of car boot sales chasing northern soul 7" singles for 5 pence each. All of them gone now, about a dozen of them ar worth £100 plus each...I don''t even know where they went!
Nice to know I'm not the only one who loves that album, HP. It's a cracker, isn't it? My youngest brother gave me a pile of old Northern Soul 7"s. I should get around to studying them in more detail, although I very much doubt they'll be the valuable ones.
Fun video, I love compilations and never understood why many collectors don't buy them. They are cheap compared to many sound tracks which are basically the same thing. I'm surprised you don't have that Stiff Records comp with so many 80's British indie artists, great lp. I own some wonderful Verve jazz comps that sound awesome, as well as half a dozen Blues packages. Oh and a favorite of mine is Anarchy in the UK, all early punk, great fun. Cheers 🥂 Jon.
Cheers Jon. I do have a great Stiff compilation called 'Can't Start Dancing' that you had to buy via Sounds magazine. It includes the wonderfully hilarious 'Razzle in My Pocket' by Ian Dury. Great stuff.
Poor Embryonic & his pitiful comp collection 😂 What's Happening Stateside sounds like my kinda bag. I always suspected that Richard Branson was a wrongin'. V gave the game away. Man that Blue Note comp had some cool people on it even if it is truncated versions. Nice vid David. Cheers...Ben
@60sPsycheFanatic That's crazy. It happens to me sometimes too. Frustrating. Maybe try sorting comments by 'Newest First - it might show up then. Hope so.
Thanks! I didn't realise that that lamp was such a distraction! At this time of year, when it's mostly dull outside, a bit of coloured light lifts the spirits....I think.
David - Great video. I also showed the great By Invitation Only. Love the OGWT record too. Cheers Bill
Nice stuff - I’ve not got many compilations but have enough to do a 10 best as well - another thread / tag added to the list to do !!
Hi David, You clearly have more comps than me, and they are clearly better than mine 🙂I don't think I have ever seen any of these. Nice collection!
Spectacular showings David, you could host your own radio show with this lot.
It used to be so much fun buying comps in the early eighties. I discovered all kinds of quirky artists. My favorite comp. is Fairy Tales and Myths .

Hey David. Great video! Love that Warner Brothers one! Nice Enough To Eat sounds killer! So many amazing comps! Cheers

Thanks, David, in 'Pillows and Prayers' you have a gem. It fetches £30+ at fairs.
That's a great price for a 99p album. Blimey.

Great picks. I'm keeping my eye out for those Cherry Red and Virgin comps now. I used "Nice Enough To Eat" on my entry as well.

Those Warner Brothers loss leader compilations are great! 7-8 years ago, they were all posted on a blog somewhere. I think there were 20 of them.

Picnic - Harvest Sampler
That's a fine compilation. I have a copy on vinyl, and the CD version too.

possibly I missed hearing but what is the name of album on the Atlantic label?
My fault. I didn't hold it up long enough. It's called 'By Invitation Only'.

That quite a disturbing lamp you have there, changing colours constantly. Please don’t use it in your next videos. Great selection of comps btw!
