That "Les Paul" Sound...Is The Gibson Still King?

  • At one point or another, we’ve all said it...
    “I’m looking for...”
“I’m not really a fan of...”
    “I wish I could find...”
For us guitar players, those statements can often accompany the words, ‘THAT Les Paul sound’! It’s the phrase we use to regulate an instrument’s capability to replicate some of the best, most timeless & classic recorded guitar tones in history, and transport us back in time to the golden era of (most typically) Burst-derived tone. However, it means something slightly different to everyone who uses it, so in today’s video, Jack attempt to explain what the phrase means to him, at least.
We’ve pulled together three of the very best electric guitars ever to grace our store, which all happen to be taking a stab at the essence of those much-heralded, PAF loaded tone machines. Each with their own slight twist, you might find that your own interpretation of “that Les Paul sound” may be challenged by the stunning tonal virtues of any one of these mega singlecuts!
We’re pitting the mighty Gibson Custom Shop 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul against two of its boutique counterparts - the Patrick James Eggle Macon & the Nik Huber Orca 59 - not as a comparison, but rather as a reflection of just what’s possible when a masterful, contemporary guitar designer tweaks the formula and pushes the boundaries a little. Maybe it’s the sound you’ve been searching for all along... then again, maybe the original is still the King... the choice is yours, but at least the choice is legitimate!
Let us know which of these three is your favourite in the comments below, and check out the links below to find out more information at our website.
    Thanks for watching!

The 59-Les Paul has "The Sound" but the huge Necks are such a big hurdle, I can't play them without pain in my hands. But without the big neck it's almost impossible to recreate/emulate that iconic sound.
I played all the 60-ties new custom shop models (V1 to V3), and the thinner the neck, the more you deviate from the massive Sound of the ICON. The other 2 guitars both sound really great, with lots of unique character and nuances, only it's not the holy grail sound of the Les Paul. Thank you for the great comparison and for the beautiful/soulful playing. All the best.

  • @TybudX

Zero regrets with my Eastman SB59. I bought it based on pictures off of Reverb. The build is almost flawless. There's some slight checking on the fretboard in three spots that you need a magnifying glass to see, and there was a small burr on the 17th fret where the neck meets the body that was easy enough to sand down. I can jam out a song like Perry Mason and it stays in tune. I can leave it in its case for two weeks while I'm at work and it's still in tune. It still gives me a shit-eating grin every time I pick it up.

  • @LeeJHodgson

The Nick Huber Orca 59 sounds classy. Fat and soulful. I like how the coil tap doesn't create an unpleasant, overly thin sound, as many do when engaged. I jumped in, feeling (hearing) that the Gibson had "that Les Paul sound", but the Huber is, like you say, "broader" and would probably be my choice.

  • @Spidouz
    @Spidouz 3 роки тому +1

What you played with the Orca 59... gosh! The tone is absolutely beautiful, but the playing is something else... not sure what song it is, or if it is a song, but if not, it should be. It’s marvelous. And as much as I suck at playing guitar, I’m pretty good when it comes to recording and producing. So trust me, you have an awesome song I could listen all day long!

Jack, (if you’re reading comments) I own a ‘88 Les Paul Standard, ‘13 Orca ‘59 Custom and TS1. Not flexing just very, very fortunate. I’ve worked hard to earn money so no shame is spending some on outstanding instruments. From being in the room with this gear I have a similar experience regarding tone. Nothing quite like the neck pickup on a Les Paul. It gets a sound that no other builder has achieved. The Orca is very well balanced and, in my experience, a cut above when it comes to fit and finish. The fist time I picked up mine it was notable how the neck disappeared in my hand. The coil split is great too. Truly an exceptional instrument. I haven’t considered how the neck may impact the tone more so on the Orca. Maybe something to do with the neck tenon?!? The TS1 I have is from 2010 - first amp shipped to the public I’m told. It’s also very inspiring to play. You’re an accomplished guitar player and I really enjoy your videos. I hope you have the opportunity to release original music. 🙏

The bend at the 6:06 mark basically laid down the gauntlet with such force that it put the Gibson out of reach for the others. It was the guitar that made me say`YEAH`! It's all personal taste, playability, and tone preference.
I have no issues with a good Gibson Les Paul. To my ears, they have a really fat, thick, heavy, whatever you wanna call, it tone. They work more for some than others and a lot of music legends have recorded and played live with them - and thats obvious understatement.
I've always tried to force myself into trying to fall in love with their tone and it was always - Ive played enough of this, now im gonna play that Tele or Strat which feels right to me. The Tele is just a guitar I feel I can use for almost anything. I am more of a single coil guy and love Strats as well and if I was gonna get an LP, it would be one with single coils like a Gold Top replica or something along those lines.
Im not trying to make a debate either. Im neither right or wrong. Its all about your playing style and what plays and sounds good to your ears, not mine.

Great demo/playing. Would have been cool to hear a TCI-spec’d PRS SC-594 as well.

Gibson for me! The other two guitars like Jack mentioned offer you a different textures to the sound!😮. But the Gibson still shines amoungst real quality!☺. Jack I reckon you love the Nik Huber?

Jacky Boy, Uncle Gazza here. You love that Orca man. Your playing is more measured playing it, which suggests you’re enjoying it more. It’s looks and sounds the dogs do doos. Glad you didn’t go into the whole rock god tone with these like most demo guys do. It is an articulate instrument as well as a rock machine. Ironically I’ve never used a LP live in the band I play in now which is Americana type genre. If live music ever gets going again I’m going to try it, cos the 335 and Gretch can sound a bit thin at high volume. Page moved to the LP because it fills the spectrum more than a tele after all.

I have never understood guitar companies using an iconic guitar and copying its sound or design. It gets boring

Not in my case. I'm crazy about SGs and I always handed them to a good luthier who could cut a proper nut with the right angle for the strings to get the less friction. No problem afterwards.

Both the Eggle and the Orca 59 while being different remind me more of an old Les Paul. They've both got that dry direct sound with wonderful string separation and the quoted to death " Woodiness". I' m not bashing on the Gibson. I love them too.

I think Les Paul sound is middle position, high volume bridge with added moderate neck for that honk.

Nice comparison that I have been waiting on for a long time. Very very nice guitars every one of them. I have owned various Gibsons, Patrick Eggle and Hubers as well such as Krauster, Dolpin and Orca 59. Although they have simularities the guitars are different on some aspects as well that are not mentioned in the video. The Gibson is the classic design as we know with a full solid body However the Eggle has semi-hollow body which also effects the tone. And this Huber has a Cedar body which does a bit different versus Mahogany. I had a Krautster mahogany and a Cedar one so have experienced this in practice. So very similar guitars from a les Paul perspective but " behind the curtains" also different which sets them apart from each other. I want all three... :)

My problem is that these boutique makers are charging extortionate prices for something that half the time (let’s be honest) looks quite unappealing and not as sleek as say a Gibson.
Obviously it depends on what you’re into but if you asked me to drop the same amount of money on either/or I’d take a Gibson over a home-made guitar any day. Maybe there’s an element of perception in there but we’re all different. Edit: I must say that Huber sounds fantastic on that clean sound, really nice.

Having played a dozen or so les paul custom shop guitars, i would say one of them sounded substantially great. But the feel was off. Prs on the other hand all feel great with some sounding better than others. If you can find a gibson that sounds amazing and feels great go for it. But i think you’ll have a much harder time finding one.

I've owned a bunch of different Gibsons, the build quality is *incredibly* inconsistent.
You have to go through a bunch to really find a winner. That being said, some go the other way and are better then you expect. The key word there being "some".
For example, my favorite is my Figured Top ES-335 in Antique Walnut. It's a 3k guitar and it came in a case that was too small, and whoever did the wiring torched the bridge volume pot so bad the guitar was super microphonic. Luckily I have a 137 case that fits 335s, and I planned on putting my own weird pickup combo in it because I love devaluing expensive guitars. Now it's a beast, but it was annoying as hell. At least the build of the guitar was good, a lot of 335s are duds.
I've tried other Gibson style semis and single cuts but none of them ever feel like Gibsons to me. Maybe I'm just cursed to love Gibby's 🤣
PRS makes fantastic guitars at all prices, but between the scale length and overall vibe of the guitars they feel like someone else's awesome leather jacket that I shouldn't be wearing. I do *love* hearing and playing with people using them though.
When a Gibson is actually good, there's a certain beefy stiffness to the fatter necks that along with the "shrunken fretboard" thing they do makes for a specific feeling. You should feel the notes resonate on the back of a fatter neck, and a semi top/maple cap should have a certain projection unplugged.
I've always said "They're my favorite guitars but my least favorite company" 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Question: what it that Les Paul sound? The guitar played through a crancked Marshall? Is it the clean a smooth jazz sound? Is it the sound that EC used on the Beano album? After all this is just a solid body jazz guitar!

Even if I had the money, I'd be too afraid to play a guitar that cost as much as any of these. Be nice to own the Gibson though.
