I did not know this - so I learned something new today - WOW, at my age. I thought it was because I am not a frequent baker. But, I asked a friend that loves to bake and she did not know how to test it either - SO wow, thank you and who knew one could watch yeast rise :-)
Mr Tom I enjoy your videos because I usually learn something, but seeing Trix. My Mel passed 6 months ago. He was 17. I've had cats most of my life really enjoy them. Many Blessings to you and Trix
I sure enjoy your videos dear Mr. Tom! They are always SO interesting!! Thank you for all your efforts! You are TOO funny! Can't WAIT to see your bread making video. God Bless you too! Have fun!
Thank you very much. This is one of the most useful videos I've ever watched! Since it has been difficult to buy yeast during the past month, I've worried that my refrigerated Active Dry yeast with a Nov 2018 expiration date was dead. This test proved it is still alive and usable. I also appreciated learning that you can freeze yeast to extend the life of yeast, so I am going to try that too.
I got a whole case of yeast from Amazon that was just on the expiration date. I've been wondering what to do with all that yeast. Thank you so much for sharing.
Just proofed my expired yeast, expiration date December 2018 and it is now Sept 2020, the yeast is still active! I'm so surprised! Going to get some bread baking done. How to freeze it for future use?
@@deborahjones1204 yes, however glass can break/crack when removed from freezer - big change in temperature - so it's better to put in freezer bag or double up regular baggies or similar container.
Glad the yeast is good. Wondering what kind of bread. Perhaps Trixi might like tuna better. Sometimes cheaper than canned cat food. Good to see you and God bless you as well !
Excellent so should you add abit more sugar or wait longer? Love Trix she knows the gig with the wet food! (I have the most finicky cat AKA THE ASSASSIN what a nightmare no wet food that is ok mom A HUGE DEAD RODENT ON MY PORCH)! Great vid as always thank you😁
Hi Mr Tom, very useful video, thanks! I have a question though, if the yeast had risen some, but not all the way to the one cup mark, Would you still use it to bake bread, or do you think it would have been too weak to get a good rise? I guess I'm wondering if yeast is either alive or dead, or if it gets weaker as it gets older. Trixie is very cute by the way!
Keep yeast in fridge. Gona have to get Trix some Delectables Stew treats. If you do, limit them, at $1 each can get expensive. Can buy chicken baby food for less considering how big a jar of baby food is. Trix may have a toothache. My vet says cats have bad teeth so look at her toofies.
I am leaving you another message. Adapt 2030 had a video on the corn crop are 33% below on maturity. His title was something like that. The United States is getting its first cold snap. Our farmers will get 30° temperatures. It doesn't look good for them and their crops.
Interesting. I know that my Mon used to do this. I don't bake breads so never had the need to do this. But always good to know!! Quick question: do you use the yeast mixture that you just proofed for your bread, or do you use an entirely different package of yeast? Thanks for any info.
Hey Dan, normally I do use it, but this time I did not. I was not ready to bake any bread at that time. I baked bread later that evening. Thanks for watching, take care and God Bless.
I suggest to boil or microwave the water. If it's too hot just add cold water. if it's too cold microwave or boil more. Too much water went down the drain
Well, The expiration date on yet another food product, in this case for yeast, is DEBUNKED here, just as good as it would've been before expiring. Good to see Trixie's better, lol....she wants more wet food than she can eat, only to waste it, seems to me Mr. Tom, you've done spoiled the li'l brat! ;)
Wasting all that water waiting for it to hit the right temp tsk tsk. Sir u shouldve just gotten a bit of hot water from your kettle then add a bit of cold til u get to pseudo room temp or desired temp. Just sayin. Otherwise good vid
I can’t believe I watched yeast rise. Mr Tom your voice and mannerisms are certainly soothing.
Me too! But he does have a way of bringing you into it, doesn't he?
There is only one that’s for certain.
@@robertmiller7721 :-)
Me too hahaha because i have yeast thats been 2 years old, i think i can still use it as long as still alive lol
TY!
That is a fun way to check yeast.
Nice test lesson. Thank you. Actually making bread today. 🍞 Love and blessings. 💕😻

Mr Tom I made two loaves bread yesterday I had one pack of fresh yeast and a jar of old yeast best by 2017 in my frig. Both turned out great
Thank you Mr Tom 👍👍👍☺️
Good tip. Thanks for sharing. Hope you get your car fixed soon. Cute cat.
You read my mind... My yeast is older than dirt and now I know how to tell if it is still good. Thank you! Big hug to you and your Lady from Ma 2.
Thanks for the information.nice to know for sure 👍
Good tip! When I am not sure I will flush it into the septic system to boost the action in there.
Cold temps won't hurt the yeast. Freezing it in airtight containers will keep it, often for a few years past the expiration date.
wow thanks for the info

Freeze the yeast and in my experience it lasts for years.
@@DeepSouthBama56 Nice, but I thought extreme temperatures will kill the yeast. Np, though I will do that. Thanks for replying.
Awe.. I'm so sorry about your car. I hope you can fix it. Blessings to you as well.
Wow, that is awesome, it was amazing to see if it would work, hope you get your car fixed soon!
kept in freezer ahd;or refrig, yeast works for many years...i've used 15 yr old yeast just fine....always ignore expiration dates.
I keep mine in the freezer and it's always been good. I make bread all the time.
Apron Acres I just tested freezer yeast.expiration June 2015... it’s still great!
How to freeze the yeast? Mine is in a dark glass jar. Do I just put the jar in the freezer?

Great video and i liked it when u talked to ur kitty cat.
I agree with apron acres about storing your yeast in the freezer...it will last 12 years....
12 years??? Really? I keep all of mine in the freezer too! Good to know!
I keep my yeast in the freezer and it last a long long time. I keep it in a vacuum sealed brick it cam in or if opened in a quart jar.
Thanks for this video! I just had an expired yeast pachet and now I know that it is still ok😊
I always cover my yeast will foil or a plate, stops bugs taking a swim
-1/2 Cup of 110 degrees F. Water
-1 teaspoon of sugar
-old yeast packet or portion
-Stir
Let it sit and wait for bubbles. No bubbles, no good :)
I might have been using too hot of tap water! Good tip!

I have the jar kind i put mine in the freezer because I dont bake much.
So my aunt has Fleischmann’s active dry yeast stored in her drawer. However, it has expired 2 years ago. Is it still okay, or not?

Mr Tom, do you use a bread machine for making bread or even for using the dough setting for mixing and proofing?
Hey Beth, I do not have a bread machine. I thought about getting one, but never did. Thanks for watching, take care and God Bless.

Yeast eats sugar and it excretes alcohol. That is why you sometimes smell yeast in some wines. It can be used also to make hard liquor.

Dan 821 Use the proofed yeast in your recipe. It is a test I perform every time I make yeast hot rolls, breads or cinnamon rolls.
Hey Dan, normally I do use it, but this time I did not. I was not ready to bake any bread at that time. I baked bread later that evening. Thanks for watching, take care and God Bless.
@@DeepSouthBama56 Could you have saved the yeast for later that evening? Possibly put in the frig, or leave in a jar?
I have ec1118 yeast an it's not working in 20min now I have a gallon of honey water thinking I just waist 15bucks
While honey is sweet, it's also loaded with enzymes that make it the only natural food that doesn't spoil. My guess is the honey killed the yeast.
My yeast was 6 years out of date and it worked so 😂

Yes.i thought the same or little water i kettle.much quicker
