Its not too complicated at least on a base level Its mostly just trying to get the bigger number then you win. Its a bit more complex now that it's a full on card game though but it could definitely use a tweak or two
The new-ish Bakugan toys have solved the rolling issue. Instead of one or two big magnet cards that were impossible to land on, they’ve replaced them with multiple mini magnet cards each the size of a coin that basically guarantee landing on one of them. Source: was a summer camp counselor
As a kid I knew nothing about the cards or the anime, but those toys where actually incredible. Most of them where surprisingly durable and folded out in cool ways. My little kid brain went ape over the funny monster shapes.
You know I actually expected it, because in that episode Masquerade loses the coat and you could perfectly see that his body shape was that of a female, obviously Im talking about the show's designs, Dan and Shun had similar male body and Runo and the other females had the same shape etc, but then masquerade didnt have the same design as Dan, so back then I was like, "I s he a woman?", now we know.
@@gaysarahk 50 episodes is pretty standard for a kodomo anime. Most bakugan, beyblade, digimon and whatever else had 50 episodes per season. The exception was pokemon which would usually have 150 per season until the next generation came out, and that's excluding the original season. Yugioh was shounen so that one doesn't really count.
This hits way too close to home. As a kid, my parents once brought me to a Bakugan tournament. It was in the rules that you had to roll your Bakugan onto the card or forfeit your turn if you miss. I didn't get it to land on the card even once. I went home crying that day.
I had to look up the rules to verify this- and yeah, it's true. Even in the trading card game version, you still roll the toy and if it misses the opponent is declared the "Victor" of that "Brawl", but you still have cards in your hand you could play. In the standard toy-only version, you win 3 Brawls to win the game. That is- that is something else. And this is coming from someone that plays modern Yu-Gi-Oh!.
The fact that Dan and Shun made the game together but Dan was still ranked in the several hundreds while Shun was the top player in the world, tells me that Shun did most if not all the actual work.
Shun is a giga chad and an actual anime ninja. If boomer Bakugan came back from the dead for one more season (it really shouldn't), he would have the Sharingan and would defeat SSJ4 Naga's first form with a Susanno that looks like his dead mom.

I remember when me and my brother bought our first Bakugan, my dad was pretty skeptical about it. He thought that there was no way it could unfurl and open up just by landing on the card, and he said that is was just advertising magic and editing tricks. The look on his face when we just placed the ball on the magnetic card is probably the most astonished and perplexed I've ever seen him.

Helpful tip: modern Bakugan have a “wheel” in the center of the ball and an arrow somewhere on said “wheel” telling you what direction to roll it to help people with rolling. But the Gen 1 Bakugan did not have those
I used to own all the gen 1 stuff, did they ever make a wrist launcher that actually stored the balls in there? When I bought the wrist launcher, the actual bakugan never fit inside it and my dreams of 14yo me cosplaying Dan Kuso were crushed.
@@nolaz010 they did have a wrist launcher, I never owned it but if I had to guess I believe the reason why they didn’t fit is because only B1 Bakugan could fit in it and you might be putting B2 Bakugan in it. B1 Bakugan were only made for a short time in the first season and after that they just made B2s for the rest of the series
I'm pretty sure I watched the whole first season as a kid, but there were just so many anime based on pokemon/yugioh (although this one was also inspired by beyblade) that I can barely remember what happens in it. My biggest struggle was just getting them to land. Kuso's reaction was basically the most accurate thing I went through. At that point afterwards I had no idea what to do next because my childhood brain was like "Damn, they really just....sit there, huh?"
Here's a funny story, I was working at a toys r us when Bakugan was the new hot shit, and we had official tournaments at the store, sponsored by the company that makes Bakugan and everything. I was tasked with hosting the tournament and giving out prizes and such, but was also expected to play with the kids some rounds or teach newcomers how to play. In order to do this, I was actually given a specially issued Bakugan of my own. Just the one, I didn't get a case of them like some players had, and it was very simple in the way it unfolded. I remember some Bakugan balls were like masterpiece grade Transformers, they were so complex, mine just kinda split open and had a little monster face. The problem was that I was only issued the ball, it didn't come with a card. They forgot to include it in my little tournament hosting kit which meant I literally could not play since I couldn't deploy it and it had no stats. And I was expected to be the one running the damn event.

Man, I went to a few tournaments at my local toys r us back then, everyone but one person basically decided the whole "just place your bakugan on the card" thing which made it really easy for me to beat everyone since I had a busted card + bakugan combo. But of course I couldn't land my bakugan a single time against the other person so they won our match when we had to roll them. But you shouldn't have needed a card back then to tell you its stats, they were printed on the bakugan. Though I guess an example one might not have had any so that it wouldn't get stolen or something lol.
Imagine if there's an anime that is also centered around selling toys too, but they're extremely self-aware about how stupid the whole concept of their game is.
The DS game was pretty cool. You had a stamina meeter where you can control your bakugon, and if you got enough speed you could slam an opponent off the card instead of fighting them and doing so counts as an instant ko, makeing each battle about understanding the environment, deciding what to use base on that environment and how you want to face your opponent
This was so accurate when this came out. A friend in school tried to run a game and we spent more time trying to roll the dang thing onto the card than actually playing the game.
I remember my brother made up a bullshit rule that missing the card meant my turn was skipped and i didn’t know the game so i went with it. I lost just barely and knew if i made it onto the card i would’ve won.
I never thought about it, but it's kind of weird how a bunch of kids somehow made up this game using magic falling cards and monsters from who-knows-where and everyone just kind of went along with it. I mean, the cards fell all over the world, and the Battle Brawlers don't even all live in the same place (I think Alice lives in Russia?), so how did they pass the national and language barrier? This is a mid to late 2000s anime, so imagine doing that with internet technology from that era.

And I guess all of the kids agreed just to never tell their parents about it, ever. I mean, the anime showed you could take people into the interdimensional battlefield without them having their own card or needing to battle, so the kids could show their parents super easily, even if none of their Bakugan talked. But I guess no one decided to do that. This anime had a bunch of contrivances now that I think about it.

When you think about it Masquerade is a genius. Masquerade knew his bakugan had a higher attack power than Kuso's which means he knew dracos attack power and decided not to tell him so Kuso would forfeit his bakugan out of frustration. That was truly a pro gamer move.

1:32 For context: the battle power of a Bakugan was written on the Bakugan itself, was very small to read and you had to basically go out of your way to find it; it doesn't help that different colors and runs of the same Bakugan could have the number in different places from each other despite being anathomically identical. Even worse, the battle power wasn't a fixed value, so it was common for different copies within the same run to possess different values from each other; which is a really cool idea for a collectible toy, until you realize these weren't the kind of toys you find in random packs at €2.99 each but the kind that you buy in plastic packagings that display their content at about €9.99 at least.
Yes. There were the cheap variety available at a fraction of the price and virtually identical, and then the actual ones that were made of slightly stronger plastic. Then there was a larger variety which came in for the "evolved" bakugan, those were easier to land and a lot cooler, but they never fit in with the original bakugan cuz they were bigger. I had almost every single one of them, and to this day I regret the hundreds of dollars wasted on an entirely useless toy collection when I could have saved the money for good video games on the Wii or a good gaming PC 😭

The only difference was that sphere attacks wasn’t a thing, you couldn’t put cards down when there was any on the field, and you could only do a double stand if there was no other gate card, if there was you had to choose a Bakugan to move to the other one.

I remember it more fondly cause of the console game based on the anime. Though I did get into the game cause I enjoyed watching the show and collecting the bakugan with classmates long ago. I don't think I played the actual game much, I just liked collecting and looking at other friends's bakugans. I only really played through the video game cause the story and gameplay was really fun.
This unironically reawakened an entire part of my childhood I forgot about. While everyone else was playing with Pokemon cards, I was playing with Bakugan, and I somehow completely forgot. I'm unironically going to just go binge all of it and see where it went after I grew out of it lol

Back when I was in primary (elementary) school, we used to get a large metal tray and just try and flick our Bakugan to knock the opponents off. I gotta say, it was so much fun and I was gutted when I found out that wasn't the way the game was meant to be played.
Would've preferred this method of playing honestly. More like beyblade and less using cards actually sounds like a really fun idea. Should've been the initial release.
It kind of is. Knocking your opponents bakugan off the card with yours counted as a victory in the real game. Japan even got an anime based on a knockout only format.
Bakutech the game based on knocking your opponent's Bakugan off was real and had it's own 5-10 minute anime series. It was fun if a little bit brainless. Both the anime and the game.
Honestly, as a kid, I was all into the whole "Gotta collect 'em all!" Anime phase, but Bakugan I couldn't follow. I tried to watch when it first aired but for the life of me I couldn't get behind it lol

This is absolute gold. I knew all the rules and played plenty with my brother, but seen none of the shows. The initial throw is the hardest part, but it can be cheesed by a certain pay-to-win mechanic known as the bakugan launchers, but all that means nothing if your Bp is lower than your opponents. But then they came out with the "trap bakugan" that were often shaped like cylinders or pyramids instead of spheres. Those ones completely ignored the bakugan throwing rules.
Those ones actually took up ability card slots instead of Bakugan slots because you needed their corresponding ability card to use them. I think they were limited at 1, though.

We were super poor when I grew up. Me and my sister each got a bakugan. I took hers against her will shopping. I played with it on the street and broke it accidentally. I feel super bad about that to this day. I think about it often. She probably forgot by now, but I can't for some reason.

The bakugan missing the card part reminds me of the actual PS2 game it had,where you could make your opponent miss by sabotaging the route he was moving his bakugan at,which most of the time meant a win in 1v1 since it would be your turn again and all you had to do was get another bakugan where you first threw(and hopefully managed to land) the first one. It was even worse(and funnier) playing with a friend because the AI never tried to sabotage you like you did,but your friend could and WOULD be a little shit trying to make you fall off the stage or run out of stamina before you landed on your card.
I remember i had a realization somewhere around the second season that they started to focus more on the battles themselves and threw the tactical card game aspect to the side. Don't know if it was because they gave up after trap bakugans was implemented, lack of interest or for other reasons. The games were pretty decent though (:
Part of it genuinely just had to do with the fact that the real life game mechanics themselves were very simple, unlike something like Yugioh which is surface level easy to play but very intricate under the hood, there wasn't enough substance to make an entire second show off of Iirc, Bakugan's entire rulebook is basically Turn: Set gate card, throw bakugan, if bakugan sticks, it stands, if not, end turn Battle: When two bakugan owned by opposite players stand on same card, reveal gate card, both players use one ability card, higher G power wins, winner keeps the gate card, loser's bakugan can't be used again Victory: Win three gate cards or all three of your opponent's bakugan are unplayable

Man, this reminded me of my childhood. I still have my lunchbox full of Bakugan over the years and same with the gate cards. I used to play the game with some of my friends during recess. We had our playground rules and we were allowed to run 5 Bakugan since the rounds were so short. I also remember the look on my mom and dad’s faces the first time they saw one of the toys pop on the magnet. My mom also watched the original anime with me since we had it on DVD. My first one was an Aquos Dragonoid, from that point I got a lot and I sometimes played the game with my mom. It was an amazing, yet interesting concept.

Tigrrera kinda follows the same logic as Drago (named based off of what they are) but the former still sounds cooler & rolls off the tongue more than the latter.
Worst part is that it says in the card game's rules that if you do not _specifically_ roll it onto the card successsfully, that is a forfeit of your turn. Yeah, there's a reason why nobody on the playground made this obligatory, especially since none of the available surfaces during recess were level.

It's true. I watched an episode every now and then and had no idea how the game worked at all, people would just do random things and numbers went up and down and it seemed like the main character's Bakugan was evolving into a new form in every episode.
The only battles that had any semblance of strategy to them was Shun's battles, and that one battle with Alice vs. Klauz (However you spell his name). Mostly because Shun's battles work on pure strategy showing off different battle mechanics, and Alice was setup to get beat in a specific way for the sake of disposition. Every other fight just involved Bakugans wailing on each other and throwing out the strongest amount of G-power possible.
The part about dropping it and it opening on the card was so accurate when I was a kid I used to not even try to aim for the card but sense I had so many scattered around my room I’d hear a random pop and have to find were it opened at.
Dan and Drago had the thickest plot armor ever. There was literally an episode when Drago was about to be sent to the Doom Dimension by Chan Lee, then his g-power spontaneously increased without Dan even playing a card. He avoided the doom dimension, and he and Dan ultimately won the battle. This show was such bullshit XD.
True but the entire plot of the first season was Masquarade trying to evolve his Bakugan through battle and then Drago eventually matching him. These are meant to be real life monsters so their power level staying the same would actually be weirder.
I remember playing it with my friends when we were teens. No one knew the exact rules, and if I remember correctly, we have mistaken the serial number on bakugans for their power number. So yeah my Drago had around 10000 more power, than my friend's bakugans because I had chinese rip-offs.
Let's be honest, this is why the floor cards in the show were the size of football fields.

As a kid I knew nothing about the cards or the anime, but those toys where actually incredible. Most of them where surprisingly durable and folded out in cool ways. My little kid brain went ape over the funny monster shapes.

You know I actually expected it, because in that episode Masquerade loses the coat and you could perfectly see that his body shape was that of a female, obviously Im talking about the show's designs, Dan and Shun had similar male body and Runo and the other females had the same shape etc, but then masquerade didnt have the same design as Dan, so back then I was like, "I s he a woman?", now we know.

@@gaysarahk 50 episodes is pretty standard for a kodomo anime. Most bakugan, beyblade, digimon and whatever else had 50 episodes per season. The exception was pokemon which would usually have 150 per season until the next generation came out, and that's excluding the original season. Yugioh was shounen so that one doesn't really count.
This hits way too close to home. As a kid, my parents once brought me to a Bakugan tournament. It was in the rules that you had to roll your Bakugan onto the card or forfeit your turn if you miss. I didn't get it to land on the card even once. I went home crying that day.

I had to look up the rules to verify this- and yeah, it's true. Even in the trading card game version, you still roll the toy and if it misses the opponent is declared the "Victor" of that "Brawl", but you still have cards in your hand you could play. In the standard toy-only version, you win 3 Brawls to win the game.
That is- that is something else. And this is coming from someone that plays modern Yu-Gi-Oh!.
The fact that Dan and Shun made the game together but Dan was still ranked in the several hundreds while Shun was the top player in the world, tells me that Shun did most if not all the actual work.

He thought that there was no way it could unfurl and open up just by landing on the card, and he said that is was just advertising magic and editing tricks. @@nolaz010 they did have a wrist launcher, I never owned it but if I had to guess I believe the reason why they didn’t fit is because only B1 Bakugan could fit in it and you might be putting B2 Bakugan in it. B1 Bakugan were only made for a short time in the first season and after that they just made B2s for the rest of the series

My biggest struggle was just getting them to land. Kuso's reaction was basically the most accurate thing I went through. At that point afterwards I had no idea what to do next because my childhood brain was like "Damn, they really just....sit there, huh?"
Here's a funny story, I was working at a toys r us when Bakugan was the new hot shit, and we had official tournaments at the store, sponsored by the company that makes Bakugan and everything. I was tasked with hosting the tournament and giving out prizes and such, but was also expected to play with the kids some rounds or teach newcomers how to play. In order to do this, I was actually given a specially issued Bakugan of my own. Just the one, I didn't get a case of them like some players had, and it was very simple in the way it unfolded. I remember some Bakugan balls were like masterpiece grade Transformers, they were so complex, mine just kinda split open and had a little monster face. The problem was that I was only issued the ball, it didn't come with a card. They forgot to include it in my little tournament hosting kit which meant I literally could not play since I couldn't deploy it and it had no stats. And I was expected to be the one running the damn event.

Man, I went to a few tournaments at my local toys r us back then, everyone but one person basically decided the whole "just place your bakugan on the card" thing which made it really easy for me to beat everyone since I had a busted card + bakugan combo. But of course I couldn't land my bakugan a single time against the other person so they won our match when we had to roll them.
But you shouldn't have needed a card back then to tell you its stats, they were printed on the bakugan. Though I guess an example one might not have had any so that it wouldn't get stolen or something lol.

The DS game was pretty cool. You had a stamina meeter where you can control your bakugon, and if you got enough speed you could slam an opponent off the card instead of fighting them and doing so counts as an instant ko, makeing each battle about understanding the environment, deciding what to use base on that environment and how you want to face your opponent

This is a mid to late 2000s anime, so imagine doing that with internet technology from that era.

When you think about it Masquerade is a genius. Masquerade knew his bakugan had a higher attack power than Kuso's which means he knew dracos attack power and decided not to tell him so Kuso would forfeit his bakugan out of frustration. That was truly a pro gamer move.

1:32 For context: the battle power of a Bakugan was written on the Bakugan itself, was very small to read and you had to basically go out of your way to find it; it doesn't help that different colors and runs of the same Bakugan could have the number in different places from each other despite being anathomically identical.
Even worse, the battle power wasn't a fixed value, so it was common for different copies within the same run to possess different values from each other; which is a really cool idea for a collectible toy, until you realize these weren't the kind of toys you find in random packs at €2.99 each but the kind that you buy in plastic packagings that display their content at about €9.99 at least.
Yes. There were the cheap variety available at a fraction of the price and virtually identical, and then the actual ones that were made of slightly stronger plastic. Then there was a larger variety which came in for the "evolved" bakugan, those were easier to land and a lot cooler, but they never fit in with the original bakugan cuz they were bigger.
I had almost every single one of them, and to this day I regret the hundreds of dollars wasted on an entirely useless toy collection when I could have saved the money for good video games on the Wii or a good gaming PC 😭

This is absolute gold.
I knew all the rules and played plenty with my brother, but seen none of the shows. The initial throw is the hardest part, but it can be cheesed by a certain pay-to-win mechanic known as the bakugan launchers, but all that means nothing if your Bp is lower than your opponents.
But then they came out with the "trap bakugan" that were often shaped like cylinders or pyramids instead of spheres. Those ones completely ignored the bakugan throwing rules.
I just remembered that its G-power, not BP that decides the battle result
my brother had a cube one, when I was like 5 I was always trying to roll it onto the card
and then the gear you could attach to power them up even more.
Those ones actually took up ability card slots instead of Bakugan slots because you needed their corresponding ability card to use them. I think they were limited at 1, though.

We were super poor when I grew up. Me and my sister each got a bakugan. I took hers against her will shopping. I played with it on the street and broke it accidentally. I feel super bad about that to this day. I think about it often. She probably forgot by now, but I can't for some reason.

The bakugan missing the card part reminds me of the actual PS2 game it had,where you could make your opponent miss by sabotaging the route he was moving his bakugan at,which most of the time meant a win in 1v1 since it would be your turn again and all you had to do was get another bakugan where you first threw(and hopefully managed to land) the first one.
It was even worse(and funnier) playing with a friend because the AI never tried to sabotage you like you did,but your friend could and WOULD be a little shit trying to make you fall off the stage or run out of stamina before you landed on your card.

I remember i had a realization somewhere around the second season that they started to focus more on the battles themselves and threw the tactical card game aspect to the side. Don't know if it was because they gave up after trap bakugans was implemented, lack of interest or for other reasons. The games were pretty decent though (:
Part of it genuinely just had to do with the fact that the real life game mechanics themselves were very simple, unlike something like Yugioh which is surface level easy to play but very intricate under the hood, there wasn't enough substance to make an entire second show off of
Iirc, Bakugan's entire rulebook is basically
Turn: Set gate card, throw bakugan, if bakugan sticks, it stands, if not, end turn
Battle: When two bakugan owned by opposite players stand on same card, reveal gate card, both players use one ability card, higher G power wins, winner keeps the gate card, loser's bakugan can't be used again
Victory: Win three gate cards or all three of your opponent's bakugan are unplayable

Man, this reminded me of my childhood. I still have my lunchbox full of Bakugan over the years and same with the gate cards. I used to play the game with some of my friends during recess. We had our playground rules and we were allowed to run 5 Bakugan since the rounds were so short. I also remember the look on my mom and dad’s faces the first time they saw one of the toys pop on the magnet. My mom also watched the original anime with me since we had it on DVD. My first one was an Aquos Dragonoid, from that point I got a lot and I sometimes played the game with my mom. It was an amazing, yet interesting concept.

Tigrrera kinda follows the same logic as Drago (named based off of what they are) but the former still sounds cooler & rolls off the tongue more than the latter.
Worst part is that it says in the card game's rules that if you do not _specifically_ roll it onto the card successsfully, that is a forfeit of your turn. Yeah, there's a reason why nobody on the playground made this obligatory, especially since none of the available surfaces during recess were level.

@@demonic_myst4503 except some of the cards were thick enough that you literally could not roll the Bakugan directly onto it: I cannot tell you how many times I literally watched rolls just stop dead or start going along the side/bottom of the card because it just couldn't make the climb

It's true. I watched an episode every now and then and had no idea how the game worked at all, people would just do random things and numbers went up and down and it seemed like the main character's Bakugan was evolving into a new form in every episode.
The only battles that had any semblance of strategy to them was Shun's battles, and that one battle with Alice vs. Klauz (However you spell his name). Mostly because Shun's battles work on pure strategy showing off different battle mechanics, and Alice was setup to get beat in a specific way for the sake of disposition.
Every other fight just involved Bakugans wailing on each other and throwing out the strongest amount of G-power possible.
Man, every time I think I've finally forgotten about this show, someone brings it back up from the primordial ooze of my mind.

Dan and Drago had the thickest plot armor ever. There was literally an episode when Drago was about to be sent to the Doom Dimension by Chan Lee, then his g-power spontaneously increased without Dan even playing a card. He avoided the doom dimension, and he and Dan ultimately won the battle. This show was such bullshit XD.
True but the entire plot of the first season was Masquarade trying to evolve his Bakugan through battle and then Drago eventually matching him. These are meant to be real life monsters so their power level staying the same would actually be weirder.
