    Anyone else remember when Adam was first trying watercolor and said it was his LEAST favorite medium? Oh how far we've come! (unless i'm hallucinating..)
    (Bonus points to Adam for branching out on his skin tones in this video!)
    The last part of what Steph said really resonated with me, i've been trying to get my fiancé to draw with me more because of your videos. He used to get discouraged a lot but now he's happy to color in my drawings for me. (And WOW! He colors WAY better than me!)

    Hullo Guys! I also have the 48 set of Gansai Tambi paints! I bought mine after watching Kasey Golden’s video about her visit to the Studio Ghibli Museum in Japan. She purchased the special museum set of paints that have been used in the movies! I do enjoy watching your videos and seeing how much fun you both have! If I can offer a tip for Adam? If you clean up your line work with a kneaded eraser lightening your sketch your colors will not mix with the graphite and stay more sharp and pure, less saturation from the graphite or muddy look from the pencils. You can always use a fine liner for your finishing touches and bring about your line work bolder if you choose to do so. Just an idea. Thank you for sharing your time together with us. Please take care and have a lovely day!

    I feel like adam’s painting in this one just got the right amount of saturation, maybe more opaque than his normal ones but it is perfect!

    I love how opaque these can get. That's been my biggest complaint with most watercolor, because sometimes I just want a bright or solid color darn it. 😆❤

      It might be worth it to look into gouache!

    • @Ren-kw8cg
      @Ren-kw8cg 2 роки тому +14

      That's kind of the point behind watercolors-- to layer! Most western ones are made with the intent to leave a smooth, transparent finish. I agree with Lori G-- look into gouache! It's similar in that it's water-based, but is meant to be opaque and matte.

    I have a really cool story behind my watercolours:
    Way before I was born (in the late 70s/early 80s) my grandparents owned an "arts" store called literally "The Arts." Their store sold fine art materials and musical instruments. Unfortunately it wasn't doing particularly well, and my grandparents were talking about closing down.
    My uncle (Dad's brother)had decided to have his education take a business oriented path and asked to buy the business off of my grandparents. They agreed and my uncle took over.
    The first thing my uncle did was focus the store on one thing... which was musical instruments. Second, he refinished the basement and started offering lessons.
    Nowadays it's a multimillion dollar business! They had kept growind their clientele, and needed to expand. They took over a second storefront, the unit right beside them! They then ended up moving half way across town to an even bigger location as well as open a location in the neighboring town dedicated exclusively to lessons.
    Getting back on topic:
    So when my uncle changed the store's focus, my grandparents just kept all of the art supplies.
    My grandpa gave all of the Winsor and Newton tube watercolour paints to my dad, who then gave them to me. So, I now have what could very well be, every colour of W&N tube watercolour paint there is, they're vintage, and they were free! Well, for me they were lol.
    Anyone who may want to confirm out my story, look up "The Arts Music Store" and if your really want to, you can go there. It's in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. About a 45 minute drive from downtown Toronto!

    • @DoodleDate
      @DoodleDate  2 роки тому +10

      aaaaa that's so cool that you got to keep them all!! I have a way less cool version of this story LOL! My Dad rented out his house while he was travelling and when he came back, the previous tenant had left a bunch of stuff he didn't want anymore. I inherited a briefcase and some old used art supplies from about the 80s that day hahhaha! I think I was the only 12 yo that owned a briefcase B) - Steph

      @@DoodleDate Idk dood, that's pretty darn awesome! I just realized how I got my watercolour paper is pretty cool too. My fiance and I were walking my son school and on the way home we walked by a house that had apparently had a yard sale the day before. They had a bunch of stuff that hadn't sold, on the lawn in a box marked "free." I kid you not, I got two full blocks of Arches Watercolour paper, a really old watercolour sketch book and a bunch of other paper that I didn't recognize. Now that I understand how expensive Arches is, and why, I wish I could go back in time and see what else was there that I didn't pick up. I also wish I could go back to the previous Saturday because I bet you anything they had paint, and maybe even other art supplies, for decently cheap. If they were just throwing away Arches, they clearly didn't realize what they had.

    I own this set and they are honestly such a great paint for just playing around. The fact that the glue binding making them super thick but then they can be ultra water downed helps with not over thinking your blending and coloring! since most Japanese watercolor artist are super "light" and focus more on the sublet details of negative and positive space rather than full out rendering their works, these paints make a lot of sense for softer styles of painting, but it also means over blending doesn't work well with these so you have to limit yourself to painting a certain way to really get the full effect of these. I want to buy the travel size kit because these would be wonderful for quick sketching out in the real world, cuz the full size set is way too big xD

    Both pieces turned out so lovely, those pastel shades are so gorgeous, they look like most of my clothes, I'm kinda glad I held off on buying the set before because now I'd be able to get it with those colours included. Having spent this sweltering summer mainly outside am planning to get these out very soon so even though I came to your video late, it is really timely for me. I have that substitute silver in among my metallics so I have both. You can buy replacements which is really nice. My box of course is old style. I love that you are so unstuffy and just have fun with things, sometimes the level of really intimidating art can be very off putting, but really on the whole I find this super precise type of art uninteresting anyway! There are one or two exceptions. Anyway thanks. Loved the work too btw.

I really think you would have fun with them. I put all 24 colors on one 5x7 Academy paper and it is gorgeous. I might just frame it all by itself LOL I hope that you get an opportunity to use them.

    Those paints look amazing! A friend of mine just got them and she said she loves them.
    I recently bought a small Schmincke watercolor palette that was not cheap, so it’ll be a while before I can splurge on more paint 😭
    I’ll just have to live vicariously through you guys! 🥰

    I’ve never tried Kuretake paints yet but would like to at some point. Recently got the spring pan set from Viviva and loving those it has some very bright colors as well as some pastels, the spring Kuretake set looks just my aesthetic as well.
    MMm I really love how the blending on Steph’s came out it’s smooth but in a way that just has this vibe of a gummy worm i want to eat it.

    If I remember right they some type of honey glue stuff.
    Edit
    So I looked it up its made with a mix of animal glue, beeswax, sugar and other natural dyes and binders. Think of them as sumi inks in Japan. Which can cost an arm and a leg

    I have the set of 12 and I have to say I think I love how these lay down on the page because of the different type of binder it uses. they just feel... nice?

    I have the 36 set of them and I really like them, though I haven't reached for them in a little while. I want to try the Starry, Pearl, Opal, and Gem sets (6 in each set) as well but they are pretty expensive here in Canada so I haven't bought them yet.
    Both of your pictures turned out super good BTW!

    I love my Kurataki gansai paints, and am nearly ready to replace mine, but I would get them without the metallic colors to keep the new set from getting glittery. It has taken four to five years to use my set of 36. you can just replace the color you need.

    I stopped drawing for a long time after primary school, because I thought it was childish and I wasn't good enough.. Luckily I got to my senses and after getting an IT degree I decided to get a degree for Graphic Design and finally realized that drawing wasn't childish, but a good hobby for me to get creative. I hope my childern will find their passion too and I will never say that a hobby is childish.

    I understand the feeling that you aren't good enough. I've loved making art ever since I was a child (animals and nature themed are what I do) and I made a lot of art throughout my primary and secondary school years, but gave it up after my GCSEs because of the grade I got (and the fact that the teacher we had in the second year of the GCSE course was quite mean and criticized everything you did - see also convinced me that I was no good at needlework, too! I missed the teacher who retired who we had for the first year of the course because he was great.) I tried again a few times after school but was frustrated with it because it didn't look as good as the people who I admired on deviant art. In 2014 I hit a low time in my life due to things happening with my partner and I had an illness that took me along time to recover from - I'd lost concentration for reading and cross stitching because of it and had a lot of brain fog. I took up art again because of it and started with acrylics from the Works and B and M. I got other things to try as well, but the acrylics were my favourite art supply for a time. Doing that renewed my interest in creating art again, but even so I took breaks from it. I got back into cross stitch and needlework again in 2018 and that took over for a while until last year when getting the fabric for cross stitch was hard. At the end of last summer I started painting again, did some artwork with markers and pencils and discovered the art community on youtube. Finding youtube has been a big encouragement for me and it has helped me get through the pandemic. I only found your channel in December and look forward to watching your videos every week.
