An alternator is meant to maintain a battery, not charge it. Batteries eventually die. Batteries are a consumable product. No battery will last forever. The goal is to consistently maintain your battery to get the most life out of it. Different chargers. Different capabilities. Under normal conditions, most 12-volt automatic battery chargers will work on an AGM battery. Many newer battery chargers have settings specifically for AGM batteries; some even have separate settings for OPTIMA REDTOP and YELLOWTOP batteries, like the OPTIMA Chargers Digital 1200 12V Performance Battery Charger and Maintainer.
AGM and gel technology differ. Remember that the technology of an AGM battery is not the same as a gel battery, which has its own charging requirements. If your charger offers different modes, select the correct one for your battery. If you use the gel setting to charge an AGM battery, it won't fully charge and, over time, it could actually damage your AGM battery. Under normal starting conditions, an OPTIMA battery should never experience at-rest voltages below 12. Most 12-volt chargers and alternators have no problem recharging an OPTIMA if it has an at-rest voltage of 10.5 or greater. The magic threshold - 10.5 volts. The charging scenario for a deeply discharged AGM battery, one that's dipped below 10.5 volts, may be slightly different. The OPTIMA Digital 1200 can recover batteries that have been discharged as low as 1.25 volts. Other charger tips for recovering a deeply discharged AGM battery can be found in OPTIMA's tech tip, How to Resuscitate a Deeply Discharged AGM Battery.
Hook up the good battery and deeply discharged AGM battery in parallel - positive to positive and negative to negative. Do not have the charger connected to the battery or turned on at this stage.
Now, hook up the good battery to the charger. Turn on the charger. The charger will "see" the voltage of the good battery (hooked up in parallel), and start providing a charge. After the batteries have been hooked up for about an hour, check to see if the AGM battery is slightly warm or hot to the touch. Batteries naturally become warm during charging, but excessive heat may be an indication that there really is something wrong with the battery. Discontinue charging immediately if the battery is hot to the touch. Also discontinue the process if you hear the battery "gassing" - a hissing sound coming from the safety valves. If it's hot or gassing, STOP CHARGING IMMEDIATELY! With your voltage meter, check back often to see if the AGM battery has charged to 10.5 volts or above. This generally takes less than two hours with a 10-amp charger. If it has, disconnect the charger from the wall outlet and remove the good battery from the charger. Now, connect only the deeply discharged AGM battery to the charger. Turn on the charger and continue until the AGM battery reaches a full charge, or until the automatic charger completes the charge process. In most cases, the AGM battery will be recovered.

I had 2 lead acid batteries that were sitting at 4.5-5v and 1 that was 0.. absolutely nothing. My Schumacher kept doing errors over night. I’ve learned when it comes to this, trickle charging and old school non digital chargers are the way to go. Grabbed one from harbor freight. For the first 3 days, I used a power wheels 1amp battery charger that I converted to pos/neg clamps. For the next 4-5 days I used the old school trickle on 2amp. I can say that after one week of slowly giving them juice all 3 batteries are sitting at a constant 13.8 while on charge, 13.2 off charge. And handled load test with no issue. Well sitting on the side of the road I just found a red top lol. I’m gonna try and work some magic into it.

Did you check the capacity? You can trickle charge it back up to 13.2 volts but just because it's holding voltage doesn't mean it has any capacity It could have one amp hour for all you know

I know this is an older video. But I have a yellow top from 2009. And still have the instructions.
They are very clear that you put the battery on a high amp load for 10+hours minimum. And then a low amp load or trickle charge for a few hours after.
This battery has "died" once from stereo abuse. And it even tested same as yours. But after giving it about 15 hours of charging it came back.
Maybe they are as hit and miss as people say. But I love my yellow top. Its a beast

For whatever reason, all my Schumacher maintainers won't maintain. I've asked the part store and they said they are getting back tons of maintainers and batteries. I've replaced 3 Optimas in a row. New off the shelf and they went dead after a few months of use. I use to swear by them, but anymore I just don't know. I ended up buying a Motorcraft only because of the warranty, which is about the best on the market I've seen.
I have a Schumacher sc1400 that just quit. I contacted them and they wouldn't replace it and said they didn't have the parts to fix it either. So I'm stuck with a $335 charger I can't use. The harbor freight maintainers seem to work the best besides the clips corroding after a few months. I've tried many different maintainers/chargers on the net.
My neighbor has a noco but he finally admitted it won't work on bad batteries after he tried bringing back 5 different batteries I had. He said it worked on his Honda. I told him it'll work on a good battery that just needs recharged but not on a bad battery. After yrs of trying to save batteries, the time it takes just isn't worth it. A battery you think you saved will just give up when you don't expect it. Also it'll never give the same performance as it use to. Next you burn up a starter or have other electrical issues all leading back to a bad battery. Just buy a new battery.

Old school does the best job of testing, and last forever. Mine is ancient and still is perfect. One tip the top of the battery can conduct power, and will drain the battery. Test it by putting the volt ohm meter to the positive then to the top of the battery. Dirty battery will drain. Dirt is conductive.

Now that Optima is owned by Clarios, they want you to buy their own brand of battery charger - which despite the high price - will not restore a battery with a bad cell. Battery chargers claim that they can reverse stratification and sulfation. I don't know. When a battery drains, and it's still under warranty, I've been able to recharge some batteries. But when an out of warranty period battery on the charger gets hot, that's not coming back to life. Kind of weird to spend money on a battery charger, to restore a battery under warranty, which should just be replaced under warranty.

It will charge regardless since it has no choice and that keeps you from having to use a slave battery.
