What to do with all these peanuts?

  • When we order our jars and bottles they come in these huge boxes full of biodegradable packing peanuts. If we don't dispose of them immediately, eventually they get caught up in the wind or get spilled and make the biggest mess ever on the farm. If we fill a giant contractor bag and take it to the landfill, well that defeats the purpose of being biodegradable right? We have come up with a solution to test out just how degradable these peanuts are - we've created a dumping site in the woods in the hopes that the soil microbiota will help us break this corn product down into something useful on the farm - compost! Even if we never use it for amending soils, I still feel better letting is degrade onsite and use the boxes for weed suppression under mulch. Forever Foods Farm. November 24, 2023.

I had wondered if they could be used for mulch. I don't know what all is added to make those peanuts.

My thoughts exactly. I’m thinking I will do a test in the spring. I want to give the microbes time to break things down as I feel this might be some heavily sprayed GMO corn or something. I’m gonna take it slow.
