@OrangeSodaKing One of Hamelin's most amusing concerto performances I believe. Also, the sonorities he conjures up from the piano... absolutely amazing indeed. I'm glad you enjoyed this one.
Of course, in this relatively short fantasia for piano and orchestra, we must have evocations of North Africa But we must recognize that they do not invade the score, Saint-Saens remains faithful to his policy of reserve in his style.
Oops everyone else is writing in English, I thought the piece was very quick, other samples I listen to a little slower Bravo! Bien joli! Saent saens was organist at st. Mari in Paris on the left bank, how did he get from being and organist to compositions like this and the piano and vioilin concertos????
Not only was he the organist at St. Mari, but he was also a master of many other fields as well - astronomy, mathematics, literature, music. Quite a genius. But my favorite thing about him is this music :)
Many musical and of the time got organ degrees. It was a good place to find more stable employment. But thanks to St. Saens and his brilliance we have so much more to enjoy and be thankful for.
Is being an organist something lesser than other things? You need an education. So many of the great composers were organists. Have you ever heard of Bach? Handel? Brahms? Mendelssohn? Franck? Duruflé? Fauré? Messiaen? Not only was Saint Saëns an organist, he was a GREAT organist. His teacher urged him to play for income. No real musician would ever belittle organ. It is one of the great instruments that all great composers wrote for and played and honored.
I love and hate this piece so much. The opening theme after the introduction is one of my favorites in all of saint saens’ music but he immediately deviates from it for the majority of the piece :(
This is an unimaginative comment: Oh! my goodness, how I love this piece and this performance!!!
I'm Speechless!
What a brilliant performance! I'd expect nothing less, however from Hamelin.
Wonderful !!!!!!!!!!
i just have one thing to say: good God, this was LIVE?!?!??!?
Fantastic performance!

Immenso capolavoro di uno tr i giganti di sempre.
Glad i'm not the only one having thought to jokes and "double entendres" with Toto's song :D :D , and anyway it's a fine gem i've liked to listen to.
I love 1:43-2:35. It's sounds so beautiful.
A fantastic performance by a master pianist. Thank you for the inspiration

What a tremendous play it is!

I wouldn't call it a flaw as it didn't sound bad at all, I think, he just got carried away a bit. No wonder, this is such an exciting piece! :)
Just Brilliant
@OrangeSodaKing By the way, have you noticed that at 4:30 Hamelin plays so fast that the orchestra simply cannot pick up the pace? :)
I do not hear that... The passage is played twice and the off-beats in the winds are in the score, are they not?
I'm seeking recordings CDs of Hamelin's "AFRICA" fantasy.
Can't find at AMAZON.
Are there any informations?

I love the whole thing... it is so powerful and energetic
He knew what he was doing. Accept it.
Sounds just impossible............
There's no real excuse for that on the part of the orchestra!
Toto did it better
Silly person. This is music, not the pop trash for lightweights.
