- So I play a lot of stax in cEDH. That is my main archetype. And I see a lot of people build stax decks themself. I guess video is the answer to all the wrong I see.

Just a thought that I had, but in a lot of ways group hug is very similar in strategy to stax. What I mean by this is that both decks are hyper focused on resource management and breaking symmetry
I've tried group hug in cEDH. It's great fun. By giving everyone HEAPS of gas, it's really hard for people to win with combos because there is so much interaction.
One of the trickiest things is timing. Because you don't want to give tooooo much advantage to the person directly to your left.
Just remember death and taxes may break the stackses, but your combos will never hurt me.
I always tell prospective stax players that the goal isn't to stall the game out. The goal is to slow your opponents down enough such that you could safely win
So true.
Stax is about turning the battlefield into quicksand, but unlike your opponents, you're BUILT to escape that quicksand.
Well said my friend
Don't question your teaching my friend.
Nearly a perfect introduction to the archetype!
Only thing I would have added was some commander / deck options to look at for aspiring players.
-WINOTA for players who enjoy aggro in other formats, this is by far the most explosive stax deck.
-KENRITH if you just want a well rounded option that can play any and every hatebear imaginable.
-EITHER SISAY if you wan't a toolbox option that's far more adaptive than linear. WUBRG Sisay has far more option / potential, while WG Sisay is limited but utilizing her is far less of a resource investment. ROCCO is also a good toolbox option who can layer Food Chain combos.
-ARMIX + TYMNA if you want maximum value in the command zone. This is easily the best Orzhov deck imo, packing removal, card advantage and reanimator support in the zone.
-KAMAHL + TYMNA if you want to get in on the "winconless" (no combos) trend. Kamahl doesn't have to be partnered with Tymna (Bruse, Ishai, Akroma and even Prava can work), but the card advantage makes it the best beginner option.
-HELIOD is a great beginner option, with a clean combo a very - direct play pattern.
-JORN would be my recommendation for anybody who still wants to play the "oldschool" artifact "lock" stax, since he breaks parity just by running some snow lands.
*(This is why you're a good teacher and I'm not. I listed WAY to many!)*
This was helpful, thanks!
I love this! I’m building a Chulane midrange creature based stax list. Basically I’m trying to slow down my opponents that tend to play either Turbo and hard stax. Midrange sits so well in between there and Chulane can pivot between accruing value and stax so well with creature synergies.
Hey, Mons. Thank you very much for this video. Stax is actually my favorite archetype in Mtg because I like playing the game when my opponents cannot play the game. I'm evil, yes. And I like to trample my opponents to death with Bruse and Ikra. When combat damage is literally one of the wincons.
Unbelievably valuable video. Thank you a lot for this and all of your educative videos
your welcome. Glad you like it.
Yes!!! Great video.
Currently struggling choosing the commander for my Mud deck. Started wanting to go Mono-white but now leaning more towards Sharuum control avoiding Ad Nauseam and Consult/Oracle combos.
At the same time trying to find a way to function under null rod, torpor orbs and rule of law effects.
I've been challenging myself lately to try and build a "Winconless Stax Deck", or basically a stax deck that includes no combos. It's been great fun and an excellent challenge.
So far, I haven't had heaps of success, but I'm leaning a lot.
The current one I'm testing and adjusting is Akiri + Ishai (Jeskai Stax). The basic plan is to land stax pieces, all the artifacts buff Akiri and Ishai buff's itself, then to beat people in the face with big commanders. Again, not a super efficent gameplan, but it is fascinating to play with and teaches you heaps about playing from behind.
why not Tymna, Kamahl?
Awesome video! I’ve been working on my gw hatebears list for about 7 years and your video has made me want to reassess every single card choice :D
100% correct about having to change the deck with each set release haha
Great job sir
Yasharn can't play Natural Order, because it need to sacrifice a creature :p
GSZ for Dryad Arbor, sac Arbor to NO. Obviously.
13:29 I’d say Yes and No. While stax is technically “harder” to make work it’s also financially easier to make as even the basic combo you mentioned of LED and Breach runs you around over $600 while you can build a whole suite of stax for under $200. As more and more “semi official” organized tournaments are taking over LGS’, proxies are getting banned for them and communities are now deciding between just being in a Pay2Win situation or find alternatives.
As a tivit stax player this video is so helpful!!!! I love your channel!
Thank you. Glad you like it here.
Thanks for this video. I love stax and this was very informative.
My rograhk thrasios deck is a stax deck that takes advantage of the control combos. Fury storm and gale’s redirection is a very underestimated two card control combo. It’s like a solemnity decree of silence. But it’s 9 mana 2 card compared to 11 mana 2 card. And you are pseudo drawing cards as you counter them :3
Great video, but I would like to add. I think that stax is not always what you want to build, but what you are FORCED to use if you want to play a certain commander. For example, I really like Brago, King Eternal and I tried to build him completely without stax, but then you just don’t live up to your combo (with Strionic Resonator or Lithoform Engine), because the combo is quite slow and requires preparation. And stax just helps to solve these problems:
Do you need your commander for combos, and is it also an value engine? The removal that would kill Brago will be aimed at the Magistrate or the Canonist.
Is your commander not broken and can't draw cards like crazy (hello Tymna)? It doesn't matter, stax will help slow down enemy value engines: recently I managed to keep Magus of the Moat on the table, which helped to slow down Tymna and Yuriko enough.
I think many other examples can be given. I don't have much experience, so maybe I'm wrong)
No your right. This is kinda spot one. A lot of cEDH viable commanders are just slower then others so they have to do something to gain time. Stax give them time. So you said it right.
You caught me Mons, just finished Sisay RoL and Jetmir stax, looking to make everyone miserable.
Great video!
I am trying to make a CEDH Derevi stax working for a good while now, but I have a hard time finding a good finisher combo unaffected by stax pieces.
natural order into craterhoof behemoth?
@@cedhtv Most of the time, there is "no etb" effect on board to stop tassa combo.
Spike feeder + archangel of thune! You’ll certainly have some flying dudes that can swing through of lethal
Have you heard of the the “Mano white guy” who uses a lot of stax in his deck and is able made it to the top four in CEDH Marchesa tournament you should look him up. He seems to to have a lot of knowledge how to use staxx pieces.
I have talked to him. We made a video togheter.
Dude in my pod yesterday made a big mistake with winter orb. I play kinnan, so I basically got to break parody. I’ve actually considered putting winter orb in kinnan. I only ever need like 1-2 lands and use dorks and rocks for everything else. Same applies to armageddon, collector ouphe, and null rod. I’ll usually have other mana sources, so shutting off 1-2 types never really hurts that bad.
Yeah winter orb is really bad vs Kinnan. It would be cool with a creature that dose winter orb that kinnan can play. Or kinnan out.
Your vids are joyous. Thanks a lot
wow thank you.
I’m having a lot of fun and some cool success running Karador Ghost Chieftain and winning with Chain of Smog Witherbloom Apprentice.
You are absolutely amazing man! I would love to get some games in with you, so I could learn from someone who respects Cedh. I need someone who is willing to spread their years of wisdom about magic to me so I can in return be one of the best cedh players that are currently active in events. I have high hopes and dreams to come overseas from America and participate in big tournaments around the world. I as well have a commander YT channel that our little team has worked hard on growing. It would be amazing to get some 1 on 1 personal tips from you one day in the future!? Until then my friend I will continue to rewatch all of your videos in search of more knowledge thank you for taking the time you do to create these videos, I personally understand the time & effort that goes into each video behind the scenes keep up the amazing work you are going to blow up one day my friend I know it!!!🎉🎉🎉
I hope you get to see this message I know it’s been 5 months since you’ve last posted a comment on here, but you are truly doing an amazing job my friend please never stop making your “creations”!!
I try to play with Patreons as much as possible. I also have talks with patreon regarding tips and deck ideas too. If I said yes to everyone I wouldn't have time left to make videos. But thank you! I try and play sometimes on discords now and then and who knows we might run into each other.
Aminotou, humility, stasis, smothering tithe, approach. Simplest deck and gameplan in the world.
Add tons of counterspells and tons of board wipes so you can still win. Bontus is normally terrible but in this deck it runs great....
I'm a very bad person. The only win condition in my Brago stax deck is scooping from opponents since they can't do anything (or win with 2/4 attack damage over hours). It works surprisingly well.
I love your deck techs actually in the middle of building tibalt and I have your windgrace deck tech built and am loving it. Anyways I'm a huge kozilek player and have been trying to make it staxx but it's an area I've never touched could you do a cedh deck tech on kozilek staxx with no budget
I have wanted to do that forever. But it is sadly not that good. Maybe one day I will sit down and really try. But Kozilek in todays meta just feeds dockside and dosen't really stax out that much. I do like him. It is a fun gameplan. And maybe I will try it one day. But I can't recommend him.
@@cedhtv I'm very much a devot kozilek player right now I can consistently get him out turn 2 or 3 but sometimes it's just not quick enough and it's surprising more fragile then my krirk deck if someone removes the right Mana rock I'm just screwed my friends at my lgs keep bringing up to try him as staxx I and ya he does end up feeding dockside not to mention the fish and rystic study my only real counters to those are torbor orb or chalice for two karn or just getting him out and holding up 2 drops
@@cedhtv I do acknowledge that the new flash colourless commander would probably be 10 times better since I don't have to cast all my rocks on my turn but I struggle to find a win there outside of painters and grindstone
@@manawaIker I actually think kozilek is the best colorless commander we have.
@@cedhtv really I would've thought that urzas battle thopter would be better I know I've had fun flashing him and torbor orb out in response to a dockside or a thassas. Maybe the new commander form commander legends will give kozi a run for his money
And that's why you play Obliterate Superfriends
Obliterate a te superfriends? Please tell me more.
There are also some cards that are so good you might wanna run em in all your decks if ya could such as Karn, the Great Curator to shut down all the artifacts of your opponents or Dauthi Voidwalker where you can start stealing your opponents cards if you have enough recursion with a high priority thing to use is their own exiled counter spells.
Hell i would even run Torpor Orb in non stax decks just to kill the ETB cards, though in my Phage the Untouchable deck i have Torpor Orb as most Phage decks do but i also have Pithing Needle which i usually target Lethal Vapors to remove it's active ability so people can't just easily get rid of it even if Torpor Orb does counter it by turning off ETB's. However they both can exist in the deck and briefly on the battlefield at the same time depending on what i need as this is a Mono Black deck i have access to the best searches and card draw in the game, so i can also search for Karn, the Great Curator play him and make Torpor Orb a creature to then sac for mana or something don't really matter as point is i have a easy way to get rid of Torpor Orb if need be as in if i needed to Pivot in the first place
Well, normally you do not exactly know your opponents to change to your deck according to them before you play, if you do it becomes kind of a pre-sideboard metagame thats kinda stupid.
The really good stax decks have some pieces that basically dont hurt themselves. If you have 2 or 3 stax decks playing against each other, the 1 combo guy will basically be dead if they dont win as fast as possible under the stax, but from then on they can get hardlocked out of the game.
And speaking of hardlocks, there are some stax combinations that are nearly hardlocks (we have the channel lands now, which kinda work against most former hard locks to some degree).
Then a bunch of combo decks might have something to bounce a stax piece, but they dont have many of these answers, and they absolutely need to remove the stax piece, their entire game resolves around getting that through, so any player that can counter their stuff will ensure that player wont do anything for the game anymore.
From a casual perspective the need for stax to have a wincon is ironically a big deal for opposite reasons. In casual if you don't have a wincon it's just a boring drawl because powerful stax does hit the board hard, but in CEDH it's because no matter how strong your stax is one of your opponents will find a way out.
Never question how you make your videos, Möns!
Thank you.
17:02 Just saying that Yasharn also shuting you down from using natural Order (You can't sacrifice Creature as a cost) so it's a no no here haha
It’s all about creature stax
You actually reminded me to do push-ups 😁
haha your welcome.
I think winter orb is actually mediocre right now. Ad Naus/Storm strategies just don’t seem to care very much about not untapping, they just want their artifacts to come into play untapped post Ad Naus. And I think that is a big reason Urza struggles, it’s best Stax piece is Winter Orb (relating to a previous video).
Correct winter orb is really bad right now.
Wondering what your opinion is on the viability of winconless stax in cedh. Maybe a video?
PLS MAKE ON FOR EACH ARQUETYPE (NEXT COMBO )
GHuess I could but that on the list.
Played my Muldrotha against Lurras and Winota stax decks this weekend. Pretty brutal. At one point every non-creature spell costed 2 more mana, you couldn’t cast more than one non-artifact spell per turn, and couldn’t play 2cmc spells 🤦🏻♂️
I play stax just to piss off my play group thats value for me 😈😈😈 their tears are so sweet.
I've been working on esper alela stax. She makes 2/1 flyers almost each time I drop a stax piece. My win cons are cheap flyers and helm mill. Thoughts or advice?
are you playing any overrun effects like elesh norn? Make all your small tokens big?
@@cedhtv i have grand cenobyte and greyfax for the tokens, i plan on getting the 3 new U/B faeries and adding them in for draw and token. plus one gives a+1/+1 to them. ive tuned it a bit. headed for a one spell per turn deck with quite a bit of flash and flying for cheap. i figured leyline of anticipation and orrery were needed.
So what are the faster Stax ways to win? I have Derevi and honestly just try to lock folks out, would love to know faster ways to win.
Stax is also generally cheaper and requires a lot more skill of your opponents decks and deck types, another reason they are so fun to play.
I personally found my tymna/kodama stax deck to be rather pricey due to so many duel lands
I did 20 push ups.
NICE! I am proud of you! and myself actually. I am honestly more happy you did 20 pushups then you building good cEDH decks.
I did 10 😂🎉
I always argue that people need a plan to win the game, not just stax the board. A quick turn around time from staxxing to winning is one of the most important things in stax.
The plan to win the game is by staxing the board.
@@hip5702, but you need to win yourself. It doesn't mean anything if you stop everyone else from winning but can't win yourself.
@@jonaswilliams9755 Can't win? You simply attack.
@@hip5702, yes, that's a thing called winconless stax. Winconless stax exists, but it's usually not viable unless your commander represents significant amounts of damage because it usually fails to win fast enough before someone can play Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, or Culling Ritual to unlock their win. That's why most stax decks have a defined win condition, and the winconless stax decks have a ton of damage in the command zone, like Kamahl, Elesh Norn, and Jetmir.
@@jonaswilliams9755And your point is?
Master mons! since I am playing Magda with stax pieces am I to take most of these words to heart?! Or since it's a combo focused strategy should I ignore?
I did the push-ups !
GOOD JOB!
I was thinking of building a Tasha deck.
Hey I got a challenge for you. How close to cedh could you take a shuyun the silent tempest? You could build anything. Voltron out the window. How would you do it?
Can we get a super stax sisay list?
Idk about not playing Opposition Agent unless I have the best card draw since I still can search my deck the opponent can’t also you steal enemy searches giving me card advantage.
I think Opposition Agent was a bad example. I also think saying that stax are bad if you can't draw more than your opponents is kinda true, but it should be stax are bad if you're opponents are able to break parody better than you. This is why cards like Opp Agent and Drannith are some of the best stax in the game because they break their own parody i.e. they don't adversely affect you.
I did 20 pushups. I want to be a stax master.
NICE! Good JOB!
Is liara portyr viable as a stax commander?
Because you did 20 push ups I will help out a lot here. The short answer is YES!
The more complicated answer if. People haven't figured out her yet. I honestly think more people should play her! She is just what Boros need more off. I might play her as a commander. I think she could be cool with an artifact deck where everything cost 3 CMC. Or something of the sort. You still have your typical boros wincons. Similar to Winota.
@@cedhtv thats exactly what i was thinking, her ability kind of reminds me of if winota and tymna had a child. Thx alot.
Fun is a 0 sum game. If nobody else is having it I'm having 100% fun
true!
I really did 10 pushups
NICE!
That was too much push ups for me 😅
But it feels great afterwards right!

if u play "CAUSAL STACKS" u must be "Buried alive" hehehe...
Mons, what do you think of "winconless stax" like Tymna, Kamahl? Your game plan is to win via damage, but you have Tymna to draw and Kamahl to buff your creatures. This is not an efficient combo, like some traditional stax deck such as blood pod would play. Do you think this has a place in cedh?
Kamahl acts as the creator hoof here. So, I think it fits the criteria.
I did the pushups
NICE! You know what it is actully time for me to do 10 aswell.
Title is misspelled no? Should be Watch. Unless it’s on purpose lol
I have always been a more casual player, but I absolutely love stax which tends to be more competitive/salt inducing. What all stax commanders do you guys recommend for a player just diving into CEDH?
Winota it’s budget friendly and can win just with stax and combat damage. Don’t even need ifinite combos or can run kiki jiki lines
I think you misdefine what a stax deck is... The decks you are recommending are aggro decks, with stax synergies. Is that a good way to put stax cards to use? Yes. Is that a Stax build? No.
Things I've acquired: World Queller.
Things I've lost: friends.
