    Well done Mike! You've built some aesthetically pleasing curves into this layout and as a result of this a bog standard fan of three sidings has 'popped' into a very charming scene. Cheers, Dudley

    Thumbs up for getting Railway books from the library, found it a treasure trove of our of print and great railway books available.
    Making use of the reservation system allows you to get a ton of books from across a load of different libraries too.

    I've been really inspired by this series, and have actually started a layout along the same lines (though without the motorbike requirement), so thank you!

    Love this! great little track. New sub today from AUS. The PECO track project is spot on for someone like myself being a starter kit. Be keen to see how you mount it and add ballast.

    Nice looking setup, missed vid one, sorry been out quite a lot. My N guage rather stalled with the laying of the track, tricky business if your using a few points. I am trying to use map pins to hold it in shape to check it all goes together, I am rather worried that pining or taping it down as I go will result in miss alignments.

    Loving these updates on the layout! Not sure these vids aren’t as popular considering you have created a small masterpiece that not only connects together wonderfully but also can be put in a motorcycle carry case! Your vids always open my mind to what can be achieved with ver little space, another reason to love N gauge!

    Layout looks great. Any plans to use one of the BMR bodies on the Kato chassis? It just so happens I am reading that same book. Fascinating stuff for an American looking from far away. Cheers!

    Hello Can you help or advise. I’ll keep this as short as possible. A few weeks ago I had a shed load of trouble with my Hornby Flying Scotsman loco with 3 coaches living up to its name, flying off the track everywhere even while going slow. In fact the slower it goes the more it jumps off. You advised keeping it simple. I restarted everything and as you said, kept it simple. Two ovals with 3 sets of points. Two coupled back to back. Learning early mistakes I made sure every piece of track fitted snug, one or two small gabs but these are no problem. I even soldered wires to fishplates, drilled holes for the wiring because I had a power failure when one set of points was switched over. I have made sure everything is flat. One or two adjustments to the securing screws at connections to even out the rails. The train ran round lovely. I stopped running for a week or so to concentrate on some scenery but this weekend decided to run the train again. The train jumps the rails at both sets of points. It also loses power at one set of points. I found that I had picked up minute debris near my scenery making, but cleaned it up, even cleaned the track nicely. Still I get power failure. When the power doesn’t fail the train jumps off, yet I cannot find a reason. Sometimes it runs round nice then for no apparent reason jumps off, or I lose power. Again I checked and have flat and even track across both sets of points. Any advice please. If I didn’t mention, I’m running 00 gauge at 1.76 scale ( double Dutch to me but you experts will understand). I can’t believe it’s weather fluctuation causing it. The set up is in my spare room, warm and dry. As warm as this blinking climate allows anyway, oh and I’m in middle England almost in Milton Keynes. Many thanks for the Miriad of advice you are going to throw at me again.

      Run a different loco in case it's the loco and not the track, I've done that loads of times only to find it's the loco. Worth checking if the wheels have moved on their axles which will effect the back to back measurements

    • @grahamsibbert2412
      @grahamsibbert2412 26 днів тому

      Hello. Many thanks for the very prompt reply. Unfortunately I only started ‘Train keeping’ in March. I bought the Flying Scotsman as a package, bought loads of good track second hand and cleaned / repaired. All good. I don’t have another loco to try. However, an update. I checked where I lost power for track to wheel connection and found a minute gap, probably about 1 mm. Rectified this. The train runs anti-clockwise with a slower but steady speed and runs reasonably well. But running clockwise it jumps off at the points and still loses power. Again checked the wheel to track and all good. It’s looking like the Hornby Frog problem I read about. But progressing. Please advise how to check the loco wheel alignment, or where to get the dimensions. I can’t see how they become out of line because it’s never fallen off or hit anything. But I’ll check.

    For some reason my comments on beeching disappeared. I disagree that Beaching tried to save the railways. Look at Japan and France, Japan and France had exactly the same problem as we did and they invested in their railway system and now their's are some of the best system on planet earth. Whereas look at the UK. It is well known that time tables were changed so that branch lines would not match main line timetables, was he just bad at telling the time or was something else going on. In what world is cutting wales in two meaning to get from Camarthen to Aberystwyth takes 2 hours by car but 7 hours by rail and you have to leave the country, was saving the railways. Especially as Aberystwyth has the national library of Wales and is a seaside tourist location that has been cut off from the coastal city of Cardiff, there is no evidence anywhere that the line should have been cut, it had huge tourist trade in the summer. Ernst Marple a man with shares (oh sorry only his wife had them...) in road building companies inacted beeching cuts. While they said rail needs to pay it's way, they were building motorways and roads all over the country, which did not have this obligation at all. Also saying he cut less than others is not an achievement, look at the East Lancashire Steam Railway that goes through Bury a town of 100,000 the station did not have low traffic, yet was cut in the 1980s, with baffling decisions like that it is no wonder that there were other worse transport ministers. Just because other ministers were ad economically illiterate as him does not make him good. There is more ridership now because there are more people now and the government subsidies are higher now than when the railways were under British Rail. France with a similar population has close to 3 times the number of passengers, Japan with twice the population has 54 times as many rail passengers. That's what investment gets you. If you had a business that was losing customers and you had the ability to put money into that business (keep in in mind more than France a country at the time with a GDP 66% smaller than the UK) you'd invest in the transport system and get more customers back.

      No still on here and I did a lengthy reply. A lot of what people constantly quote is urban myth , the railways were losing humongous amounts of money which couldn't go on, and Beeching only repeated what had been in many reports going back decades. Seaside traffic was very unprofitable due to being seasonal. Probably best to get a copy of the book and read it yourself, it debunks mist of the facts which have become so often repeated

    Nice work. I love the overall setting of your Inglenook layout. I'm on a basic circle layout by now : R4 circle of track, one railroad crossing, a slngle platform station on one of the quart of the layout, and one quart useable as a fiddle yard. A basic simple round and round, which can be expanded later (two half-circles joined to form one when assembled) Track is on the way, next month is the MDF and the girders to have the platform. I'm looking for realistic sized trees in HO/OO, I need oaks around the 300mm tall mark for my first scenery, a.k.a. typical English countryside (German Ostfriedland and Italian plain of the Pô planned), if you have a video, or the idea of a video, to give us ideas to manufacture them, you're welcome !

    Hi, this looks a really great layout in progress. I would like to build an ‘n’ gauge 4x2 but can’t decide ancient or modern. UK outline, yes, but I would try to keep price down by limiting stock. Your idea of building an oval(ish) with an inglenook seems exciting to me. Thinking of Beeching, locally the branch to Okehampton has been reopened to passengers, and the line from Exmouth is very well supported by locals and visitors alike. So, thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom.

      The railways now carry more passengers and freight than at any point in their history. BR had many triumphs ,lost in the grief over steam . The railways were literally hemorrhaging money at a rate that simply could not be sustained, in fact Beeching only added to numerous reports going back decades advocating similar measures. He also suggested ways to improve the railways which were largely ignored by BR who often used him as a convenient scapegoat. The lines shut in the 80s had no link to Beeching yet he gets the blame. The railways were in almost terminal decline from the 1920s onwards and something had to be done to reduce the huge financial losses.
