When Shirley became a recording star in her own right, she met Judy who came to one of her concerts in London. They became great friends, and Shirley always listened to Judy's advise. In 1993, Shirley, Liza and Ray Charles toured together in Europe. I have seen Shirley (many times), Liza (many times), and Lorna in concert. They all are great, and bring something a little different to the table. Sir Carol Reed's first choice for Nancy in the film, Oliver! was Bassey but Columbia Pictures who had acquired the rights became very jittery about the idea of an interracial romance. Although he had been insistent initially, Reed caved into pressure and his payoff was that he got Ron Moody over Peter Sellars (the studio choice) for Fagin. I have nothing against Shani Wallis but I do wonder at how different Bassey's career might have been (especially in the U.S.) had she got the part. However, 1968 was a very different country.
