I literally knew of Purple Kelly before I knew of the format of Survivor, since I was an Amazing Race and Big Brother fan before Survivor, so I heard the term "Purple" multiple times, then looked it up.
Well, if you don't factor in to what's going on, don't have a good "sad story", don't create any excitement and then hyou get voted out mid season, it shouldn't come as a big surprise. After all, you signed up for a TV show which lives or dies on ratings.
I mean, for people like Kelly, she is a pretty white girl, she gets TONS of attention in normal life. She is just a little more normal than the typical a-hole characters on Survivor making drama by being awful
The purple edit is so disrespectful. Imagine going on this journey and watching with your family just to not get any notice. I imagine it’s a little embarrassing.
So if you were editing the show, what would you do differently? Remember, if you make the show less exciting, more boring, ratings drop and the chances of getting canceled increase. So how would you handle all that?
It has been said that the reason she got purpled is because of her quit-even though it was the producers fault for NOT LETTING HER WEAR ANYTHING EXCEPT A SUN DRESS IN THE MIDDLE OF A NICARAGUAN STORM SEASON.
They should have more sense than to pepper their talk with bleep words. It doesn't matter how funny someone is, the comedy loses it's rhythm when you have all those stops.
I would hate to having to endure Survivor, finally going home anticipating the season to finally air, only to see that I was a victim of the purple edit.

Kelly Shinn is probably THE nicest Survivor player I’ve ever met. She’s always super friendly with the fans… and she’s just all around a great person. She deserved better in Nicaragua :/
@anonamatron Here's a thing, Kelly Quit, because she was not allowed to wear anything more covering than a Sun Dress or a Bikini during a Storm Season. Production wanted her to be a miss fan service for the season. In fact, it was so bad that Fabio gave her his jacket so that she didn't feel cold in the night. Every player in this game was surprised that she even lasted this long. She got a Purple Edit because Production was pissed she didn't want to play their game anymore.

Kelly never would've gotten a big edit. The most she would've been is an Alexis Jones and would've been forgotten as soon as the season was over. But this edit was so egregious that it made her a legend, cementing her place in Survivor lore forever. I love happy endings
It really was the story of Wendell and Dom, with Laurel/Donathan/Kellyn as supporting roles, and Chris/Michael as minibosses along the way. Everyone else post merge was completely irrelevant
Just watched it for the first time a month ago and I was like “she literally won an immunity and they didn’t even bring it up or talk to her about it or have a confessional” pretty much showing their bias/edit for the season.
I would feel bad for Purple Kelly but all these comments are right, if she had been treated as a real minor character, she would’ve just been forgotten. Or maybe sparingly remembered as that girl that had a couple funny confessionals. Now she’s a literal legend
If ever there’s a season that needs a re-edit, it’s Ghost Island. Over half the cast was purpled and the resulting story was incredibly boring. Jenna was hilarious in ponderosa but the edit made it look like she had zero personality. Chelsea was a strategic force and a physical powerhouse and the edit give her virtually nothing. More content for them would’ve been way more interesting than Laurel thinking about flipping and never doing it while Naviti doesn’t budge at all and let’s Dom and Wendell strut to the end.
I've been binging Big brother in order and noticed how much better the editing is compared with survivor, since big brother is live we have an accurate progression edit vs a winner storyline edit and so every player gets about even screen time with a little bit more going to the HOH and POV and nominees each week. If survivor showed the game unfold though accurate progression and we saw it as a neutral observer vs though the lends of the winner/flashiest finalist I think it would make a season better. What's the point of casting someone if you are going to hide them, "winners edits" shouldn't exist neither should purple edits.
I think that is because Survivor is much more narrative focused, If Big Brother was edited with them already knowing the end season results, it would be more like Survivor.

As I rewatched the nicaragua season,one of the funniest easer eggs from the editors was a dialog between chase and kelly on the volcano reward. Chase: "You don't say much, do you?" Kelly: "I know , it's funny isn't it."
That was when it went to far, I'm laughing with rage ! They are straight up mocking you at that point, it's shots fired ! They are lucky she didn't drop a diss track !
And the first question is off-screen, which on almost any reality show means it's a "Franken-bite" (i.e., a spliced together set of words the contestant never actually spoke together in a sentence)! And yes, Survivor is no different - there are several moments that, once the behind-the-scenes is known, we realize an off-screen comment couldn't possibly have been said (for example, Stephenie blaming the Villains for dislocating her shoulder in Heroes vs Villains. She actually dislocated it herself while hitting the mat - yes, the point we saw was the *second* point between her and Cirie vs Danielle and Parvati. And yes, she played a *second* point after dislocating her shoulder. Anyway, the confessional where she blames the Villains for doing it, the part where she specifically mentions them dislocating her shoulder is off-screen - the only on-screen comment is, as best as I remember, "You're already on the Villains tribe. Do you have to be such a, you know, jerk?" In other words, the off-screen part about them dislocating her shoulder was definitely a "Franken-bite"). Anyway, the point being, with the added "Franken-bite" context, now Survivor's editing team is basically just confessing! 🤣🤣🤣
Whenever I hear about the purple edit I can't help but to think about the worst purple edit in international Survivor history, with Sam from Australian Survivor 2019 getting 0 confessionals the whole season 😆
For anyone wanting to get into reality tv: be a bad person. Be an upstanding person. Be someone who is willing to argue for their ethics whether they be right or wrong. Just don’t. Be. Boring. Production can’t work with boring.
False. a lot of reality tv shows actually force contestants to act in exaggerated ways because most if not all reality tv is in a controlled environment.
I don't think anyone else had a purple edit like Purple Kelly. She was mostly invisible, usually obscure by something when in a group shot. And when she says something, it's rather something so dumb. Purple Kelly's edit was invisible and unflattering.
When I was watching Survivor Nicaragua I didnt know at first that there were two Kellys. So when I saw Purple Kelly speak I was like why does the girl with the injured leg have blonde hair all of a sudden.
Given jefffs history with female contestants it's hard to escape to the idea that this way payback for not allowing herself to be Weinsteined Your only other option is racism because a woman of another race left the same day and was treated better and got to return ... Which one is it !?
They made her invisible because she quits naonka quits too but she has a much bigger personality than most of the Nicaragua cast so they just edited her to be the most annoying unbearable person but the common factor is that both were punished editing wise because they quit
I love how Survivor's response to the double quit was to turn one player into one of the biggest villains, right after we had our biggest villains all in one season. Then hide the other player so much a term was named after her invisibility.
While I don't watch survivor, I do watch the analysis videos like this and recently I got really into drag race and surprisingly a lot of the tricks are similar. For example in the season 12 one of the queens was disqualified due to a scandal but the footage was already shot so they pretty much tried to erase that queen from the season (they're seen in group shots but aren't given much of an edit at all and I think that's similar to being purpled). I feel so smart being able to spot the tricks to make some queens seem more prominent than others and see who was favored by production!
Kelly Shinn is the Survivor queen 💜. The only reason she didnt say much is because she knew that it wouldnt be fair to the others as they wouldn’t be able to comprehend the stuff inside her mind and it would drive them insane. She was such a strong player that she realised she had to take herself out in the spirit of fairness. She would have won 9-0-0 in this season if she made the end and the only reason the producers wont bring her back is cuz they know she’d win every season she’s on in a heartbeat and make it look easy. She’d become the first 10 time winner and they can’t have that. What an icon 💜.
Around 5:00 is when he explains Purple: cuz Kelly has a purple streak in her hair, to distinguish her from the other Kelly. I thought it was a purple blur over them
Leif got purpled pretty bad toward the end. Three shows before he got voted out I couldn't even find him in any of the Tribal Councils. He was literally gone from teh show and then voted out 3 episodes later.
The most frustrating purple edit was Brenda in Caramoan. It was ridiculous given she was so awesome on Nicaragua. Finally toward the end she got a few confessionals.
The ultimate purple edit was Mary from Micronesia. Even if it wa s before Nicaragua but seriosly whnr I watched Micronesia for the first time, I didn’t even know her and Mikey B. had an alliance. Even half the cast to Micronesia was like, “lmao who?😂✋”
I always laugh when Jeff Probst throws shade. Literally cushiest job in the world, telling people to toughen up lol. He should just keep his attitude to himself.
Chelsea answered questions on Reddit. And she said that she and Dom has pretty close alliance, but when it was FTC she changed her vote to Wendell, because she asked a question and based on it, she voted for Wendell. So i think if Chelsea hasn't purple edit. It would pretty interesting. But obviously everyone would be interested in people's, who didn't even make to the merge.
The worst when you factor in their overall placement and winning chances was Brett from Samoa. He had three confessionals through the first 11 episodes, then gets edited into this larger than life superhero that everyone is rooting for when it's clear he's the only one that can stop the Foa Foa foursome from reaching FTC. I knew he couldn't be the winner just because they wouldn't give the winner no airtime until F7. Terrible edit to give a guy who could have made a really good fallen angel if they just gave him some good content in the early/mid game.
I think Samoa and to some lesser extent Heroes vs Villains need a video of their own in just how lopsided the editing is. It was both the Hantz show. It was always his story and the winners and others almost never had any storylines.

Well he didn't get that airtime because of Shambo, who was the biggest influencer from Galu who shaped that season. His immunity win was why she left. He has no hero edit because he has no strategy and was less important among Galu because of bigger targets mostly due to being strategic threats or hated by Shambo. Shambo had a Dan Foley like edit where she was larger than life and had her flaws exposed. Important, but falls just short of finale. If she lasts longer than Brett she gets trimmed down a little. Galu's editing was all about Shambo's journey.
Natalie Bolton from Micronesia kind of had a purple Kelly edit. She was barely shown. The difference is she blew up post merge and became this fierce villainess. What do you call a player like that?
I feel like Courtney was in season 20. I watched that season before China, so I knew absolutely nothing about her. I couldn’t remember her name or season she was in. Of course it didn’t help that she sat out in every basically every challenge she could. I feel like she was really only talked about in the episode she got out. Now that I’ve watched China, she definitely is more memorable.

People will actually stop watching if their favorites get voted out before endgame even before FTC if they had a clear finalist edit. If Carolyn lost the fire to Rodney I would have turned the channel. When I saw Ken was going to stab David in the back I turned it. When Kass was voted out I turned it. I remember not watching the rest of Cook Islands because Cao Boi was voted out. To be fair, we were deceived into thinking he was going to be a major character pregame.
Watching these videos is the first time I ever considered the editing of survivor and how the season has already played out, the crew knows the winner so the edit can have hints of who’s important
Purple Kelly kind of shows that if you keep your head down, even the producers/writers may even forget about you and you just might get really far by virtue of no one noticing you.
This is my first time hearing of this as named, but it definitely exists throughout reality TV. I can always tell when someone is going home on Hell’s Kitchen. And I had a friend in the Top 16 or Top 12 on American Idol whose only screen time was when he was singing. Of course, AI is “live” so they don’t have the ability to highlight someone on their last day, but despite being an amazing singer and a handsome guy, he was just kind of boring. Hard to get the audience vote if the audience doesn’t know who you are!
She managed to catch my attention despite getting a purple edit because she was soooo gorgeous. Seeing her ponderosa video showed how great of a character she would’ve been had she given a spotlight

I didn't know about the "purple edit". However, I've picked up on this movement by production teams (not just Survivor). If a person whom you never noticed before finally starts getting screen time, then they are about to be out.
Carter is my favorite purpled player. When we saw his season, my family knew he was being purpled, so we played a game to see how often he got screen time. We couldn’t remember his name so we just called him “red pants”.
What I noticed while bingeing survivor, is by episode 3-5 is they start focusing on a few players, and those players are gonna be at the end. Because editing those shows aired a few weeks into the game… so the editors knew they would be around.
Purple Kelly’s Survivor wiki says that she doesn’t appear to have had much of an impact on the game despite lasting 28 days. Understatement of the century.
wow been a Survivor fan since the beginning, and never knew about the purple edit. I figured they only followed the cast who had something interesting going. I always thought they filmed multiple aspects of the game to make it look better to the viewers.
Maybe getting a purple edit is a blessing in disguise? Because the less attention you get on the show, the less attention you’ll get from the public and still maintain a slight sense of anonymity compared to other characters on the show.
How I feel about Aurora from edge of extinction, it was like she wasn't shown at all until like episode 6. When Jeff said her name during the comp and they showed her, I was like who the heck is that.

Nah, Heather's a goat, who goes far in the game because nobody takes her seriously. She'll only get voted out if somebody wants her vote on the jury. Other than that, she'll be 41's Trozan: pleading his case to a jury that's not listening because they're focused on Brad and Sara.
I was recently introduced to Survivor through Netflix and when I saw the title I originally thought the purple edit was some weird trend where they edit a survivor's clothes to be purple.
I didn't even know this older lady in the newest season heather was in the game until like final 7 when she was just there I think she did one confessional in the final 4 that's the only one I noticed for her the whole season didn't know it was a thing in other seasons just didn't notice I guess

I actually really liked Purple Kelly when I watched Nicaragua at age 11. Mainly because she had Purple in her name, which was/is my favorite color. For about a month after the season aired, I had everyone in my life call me Purple Kayla. Even my teachers 😂 I also really liked Chelsea in Ghost Islands. She was a freaking beast in challenges but the camera never highlighted her moments and instead didn’t show her until she actually won or was on a winning team. Whenever I would talk about her with my dad, he would always need to be reminded what her name was
Rewatching Nicaragua now. 1 - I knew who Puple Kelly was before the episode she quits, so I don’t follow the argument that the audience didn't know who she was prior. And 2 - I did in fact feel sad when she quit, but mostly because of Holly's reaction after her encouragement failed.
At the end of season 2 Colby really intensely disliked Keith to the extent that he didn't even want him to have a chance to win - a move that ultimately cost Colby the title. The intensity of his disdain for Keith seemed to come from out of the blue, I recall virtually no backstory to explain it.
Basically Colby had a great disdain for Jerry and as soon as she left, his disdain for Keith showed up. I put that all in his story video, which I highly recommend.
Ow. I bit my tongue on the second violent sneeze and I really need to sneeze a third time but i lost it. Made me feel about as hurt and unsatisfied a purple Kelly with her portrayal.
All great points, but the biggest year-in/year-out purple editing is the season finale. They completely skip some contestants while others get multiple minutes of face and chat time. We all understand why JT or Coach gets face time, and it was awesome to see Eddie George, but Candace and Carolina were barely seen. They were eliminated so early and ignored again at the end.
Where does Heather from season 41 fall into this? Itd a bit weird to see someone with such little air-time for half the season to make it to the final 4
The "Purple Edit" is one thing one thing only. It's all about making the show as interesting and entertaining as possible. The editors floor is filled with boring Survivor player confessionals. If the contestant is interesting, has something to say or add to the show they air it. Notice the most animated are seen and heard often; the quiet ones with little to say aren't.
I mean, Purple Kelly's edit was not done out of boringness, her edit was done out of vitriol and spite. The rest, yeah, usually, even though some really entertaining characters have been Purpled (Cite Keith and Whitney, where they're purpled to high hell in Survivor, but they're actually amazing in the Amazing Race where they're constantly done with everyone else's and it's hilarious), but Purple Kelly's, they literally have her first shot be her obscured by a tree, and almost every shot has her either facing away from the camera, looking dumb, or straight up hidden by something.
This is half true. Editors will favor drama (even melodrama) over the mundane. But in the case of Purple Kelly (from what I gathered from this video- honestly haven't looked into it much myself) I think the editing is a bit more personal. Purple Kelly ends up being anti-show. As in: If we the audience are shown an edit of her time that is more sympathetic to her plight, we have to question the practices of the show/production of Survivor. She is marginalized so aggressively so that we, the audience, think she must just be 'boring' and 'not say much' so that there isn't any sympathy built up for her when she quits. Put another way, a business isn't going to post critical testimonials on their front page. Even if a critique is well-thought out and fairly balances pros and cons from a professional or experienced reviewer- the quality of the review has nothing to do with it. It's all about the content. It's a mild and sensible (from the business perspective) form of propaganda.
As an Australian I watch more Australian survival and I think the editing is different. I never seen someone be purpled. I think aussie survivor focus on a big picture rather than individual narrative. Edit: About quitters as well. Everyone feels bad in Australia when someone quits. In the current season, some just recently quit because he had back pain. The editing makes you feel sorry for the player because obviously, it has to be a big deal to give up $500K and they make you empathize.
Imo Survivor AU is amazing. Reminds me of back when Survivor US was more fun and exciting. Every time I convince one of my friends who love Survivor to give AU a chance they end up loving it. The host is amazing. And of course Luke is literally one of my all time favorite players in any Survivor, easily top 3

I would feel bad for Purple Kelly but all these comments are right, if she had been treated as a real minor character, she would’ve just been forgotten. Or maybe sparingly remembered as that girl that had a couple funny confessionals. Now she’s a literal legend
If ever there’s a season that needs a re-edit, it’s Ghost Island. Over half the cast was purpled and the resulting story was incredibly boring. Jenna was hilarious in ponderosa but the edit made it look like she had zero personality. Chelsea was a strategic force and a physical powerhouse and the edit give her virtually nothing. More content for them would’ve been way more interesting than Laurel thinking about flipping and never doing it while Naviti doesn’t budge at all and let’s Dom and Wendell strut to the end.

I've been binging Big brother in order and noticed how much better the editing is compared with survivor, since big brother is live we have an accurate progression edit vs a winner storyline edit and so every player gets about even screen time with a little bit more going to the HOH and POV and nominees each week. If survivor showed the game unfold though accurate progression and we saw it as a neutral observer vs though the lends of the winner/flashiest finalist I think it would make a season better.
What's the point of casting someone if you are going to hide them, "winners edits" shouldn't exist neither should purple edits.
I think that is because Survivor is much more narrative focused, If Big Brother was edited with them already knowing the end season results, it would be more like Survivor.

As I rewatched the nicaragua season,one of the funniest easer eggs from the editors was a dialog between chase and kelly on the volcano reward.
Chase: "You don't say much, do you?"
Kelly: "I know , it's funny isn't it."
That was when it went to far, I'm laughing with rage ! They are straight up mocking you at that point, it's shots fired !

And the first question is off-screen, which on almost any reality show means it's a "Franken-bite" (i.e., a spliced together set of words the contestant never actually spoke together in a sentence)! And yes, Survivor is no different - there are several moments that, once the behind-the-scenes is known, we realize an off-screen comment couldn't possibly have been said (for example, Stephenie blaming the Villains for dislocating her shoulder in Heroes vs Villains. She actually dislocated it herself while hitting the mat - yes, the point we saw was the *second* point between her and Cirie vs Danielle and Parvati. And yes, she played a *second* point after dislocating her shoulder. Anyway, the confessional where she blames the Villains for doing it, the part where she specifically mentions them dislocating her shoulder is off-screen - the only on-screen comment is, as best as I remember, "You're already on the Villains tribe. Do you have to be such a, you know, jerk?" In other words, the off-screen part about them dislocating her shoulder was definitely a "Franken-bite").
Anyway, the point being, with the added "Franken-bite" context, now Survivor's editing team is basically just confessing! 🤣🤣🤣
Whenever I hear about the purple edit I can't help but to think about the worst purple edit in international Survivor history, with Sam from Australian Survivor 2019 getting 0 confessionals the whole season 😆

I don't think anyone else had a purple edit like Purple Kelly. She was mostly invisible, usually obscure by something when in a group shot. And when she says something, it's rather something so dumb. Purple Kelly's edit was invisible and unflattering.
When I was watching Survivor Nicaragua I didnt know at first that there were two Kellys. So when I saw Purple Kelly speak I was like why does the girl with the injured leg have blonde hair all of a sudden.

They made her invisible because she quits naonka quits too but she has a much bigger personality than most of the Nicaragua cast so they just edited her to be the most annoying unbearable person but the common factor is that both were punished editing wise because they quit

I love how Survivor's response to the double quit was to turn one player into one of the biggest villains, right after we had our biggest villains all in one season. Then hide the other player so much a term was named after her invisibility.
While I don't watch survivor, I do watch the analysis videos like this and recently I got really into drag race and surprisingly a lot of the tricks are similar. For example in the season 12 one of the queens was disqualified due to a scandal but the footage was already shot so they pretty much tried to erase that queen from the season (they're seen in group shots but aren't given much of an edit at all and I think that's similar to being purpled). I feel so smart being able to spot the tricks to make some queens seem more prominent than others and see who was favored by production!

Kelly Shinn is the Survivor queen 💜. The only reason she didnt say much is because she knew that it wouldnt be fair to the others as they wouldn’t be able to comprehend the stuff inside her mind and it would drive them insane. She was such a strong player that she realised she had to take herself out in the spirit of fairness. She would have won 9-0-0 in this season if she made the end and the only reason the producers wont bring her back is cuz they know she’d win every season she’s on in a heartbeat and make it look easy. She’d become the first 10 time winner and they can’t have that. What an icon 💜.

Leif got purpled pretty bad toward the end. Three shows before he got voted out I couldn't even find him in any of the Tribal Councils. He was literally gone from teh show and then voted out 3 episodes later.
The most frustrating purple edit was Brenda in Caramoan. It was ridiculous given she was so awesome on Nicaragua. Finally toward the end she got a few confessionals.

Chelsea answered questions on Reddit. And she said that she and Dom has pretty close alliance, but when it was FTC she changed her vote to Wendell, because she asked a question and based on it, she voted for Wendell. So i think if Chelsea hasn't purple edit. It would pretty interesting. But obviously everyone would be interested in people's, who didn't even make to the merge.
The worst when you factor in their overall placement and winning chances was Brett from Samoa. He had three confessionals through the first 11 episodes, then gets edited into this larger than life superhero that everyone is rooting for when it's clear he's the only one that can stop the Foa Foa foursome from reaching FTC. I knew he couldn't be the winner just because they wouldn't give the winner no airtime until F7. Terrible edit to give a guy who could have made a really good fallen angel if they just gave him some good content in the early/mid game.
I think Samoa and to some lesser extent Heroes vs Villains need a video of their own in just how lopsided the editing is. It was both the Hantz show. It was always his story and the winners and others almost never had any storylines.

Well he didn't get that airtime because of Shambo, who was the biggest influencer from Galu who shaped that season. His immunity win was why she left. He has no hero edit because he has no strategy and was less important among Galu because of bigger targets mostly due to being strategic threats or hated by Shambo. Shambo had a Dan Foley like edit where she was larger than life and had her flaws exposed. Important, but falls just short of finale. If she lasts longer than Brett she gets trimmed down a little. Galu's editing was all about Shambo's journey.

I feel like Courtney was in season 20. I watched that season before China, so I knew absolutely nothing about her. I couldn’t remember her name or season she was in. Of course it didn’t help that she sat out in every basically every challenge she could. I feel like she was really only talked about in the episode she got out. Now that I’ve watched China, she definitely is more memorable.

People will actually stop watching if their favorites get voted out before endgame even before FTC if they had a clear finalist edit. If Carolyn lost the fire to Rodney I would have turned the channel. When I saw Ken was going to stab David in the back I turned it. When Kass was voted out I turned it. I remember not watching the rest of Cook Islands because Cao Boi was voted out. To be fair, we were deceived into thinking he was going to be a major character pregame.

Purple Kelly kind of shows that if you keep your head down, even the producers/writers may even forget about you and you just might get really far by virtue of no one noticing you.

This is my first time hearing of this as named, but it definitely exists throughout reality TV. I can always tell when someone is going home on Hell’s Kitchen. And I had a friend in the Top 16 or Top 12 on American Idol whose only screen time was when he was singing. Of course, AI is “live” so they don’t have the ability to highlight someone on their last day, but despite being an amazing singer and a handsome guy, he was just kind of boring. Hard to get the audience vote if the audience doesn’t know who you are!
I remember pre- ghost island thinking Chelsea was gorgeous and had a lot to offer, apparently the producers did not agree....
She managed to catch my attention despite getting a purple edit because she was soooo gorgeous. Seeing her ponderosa video showed how great of a character she would’ve been had she given a spotlight

I didn't know about the "purple edit". However, I've picked up on this movement by production teams (not just Survivor). If a person whom you never noticed before finally starts getting screen time, then they are about to be out.
Carter is my favorite purpled player. When we saw his season, my family knew he was being purpled, so we played a game to see how often he got screen time. We couldn’t remember his name so we just called him “red pants”.
What I noticed while bingeing survivor, is by episode 3-5 is they start focusing on a few players, and those players are gonna be at the end. Because editing those shows aired a few weeks into the game… so the editors knew they would be around.
Purple Kelly’s Survivor wiki says that she doesn’t appear to have had much of an impact on the game despite lasting 28 days. Understatement of the century.
You don't notice Purple Kelly this season. She's not the player you're rooting for.
wow been a Survivor fan since the beginning, and never knew about the purple edit. I figured they only followed the cast who had something interesting going. I always thought they filmed multiple aspects of the game to make it look better to the viewers.
Maybe getting a purple edit is a blessing in disguise? Because the less attention you get on the show, the less attention you’ll get from the public and still maintain a slight sense of anonymity compared to other characters on the show.

How I feel about Aurora from edge of extinction, it was like she wasn't shown at all until like episode 6. When Jeff said her name during the comp and they showed her, I was like who the heck is that.

I was recently introduced to Survivor through Netflix and when I saw the title I originally thought the purple edit was some weird trend where they edit a survivor's clothes to be purple.
I didn't even know this older lady in the newest season heather was in the game until like final 7 when she was just there I think she did one confessional in the final 4 that's the only one I noticed for her the whole season didn't know it was a thing in other seasons just didn't notice I guess

I actually really liked Purple Kelly when I watched Nicaragua at age 11. Mainly because she had Purple in her name, which was/is my favorite color. For about a month after the season aired, I had everyone in my life call me Purple Kayla. Even my teachers 😂
I also really liked Chelsea in Ghost Islands. She was a freaking beast in challenges but the camera never highlighted her moments and instead didn’t show her until she actually won or was on a winning team. Whenever I would talk about her with my dad, he would always need to be reminded what her name was

Rewatching Nicaragua now. 1 - I knew who Puple Kelly was before the episode she quits, so I don’t follow the argument that the audience didn't know who she was prior. And 2 - I did in fact feel sad when she quit, but mostly because of Holly's reaction after her encouragement failed.
At the end of season 2 Colby really intensely disliked Keith to the extent that he didn't even want him to have a chance to win - a move that ultimately cost Colby the title. The intensity of his disdain for Keith seemed to come from out of the blue, I recall virtually no backstory to explain it.
Basically Colby had a great disdain for Jerry and as soon as she left, his disdain for Keith showed up. I put that all in his story video, which I highly recommend.
I feel like Tyler was also purpled in worlds apart. He wasnt really spoken about until the merge and it sucks.
Danielle didn't get the purple edit though. Sadly, Brenda got it in her second season of playing.

All great points, but the biggest year-in/year-out purple editing is the season finale. They completely skip some contestants while others get multiple minutes of face and chat time.
We all understand why JT or Coach gets face time, and it was awesome to see Eddie George, but Candace and Carolina were barely seen. They were eliminated so early and ignored again at the end.
Where does Heather from season 41 fall into this? Itd a bit weird to see someone with such little air-time for half the season to make it to the final 4
The "Purple Edit" is one thing one thing only. It's all about making the show as interesting and entertaining as possible. The editors floor is filled with boring Survivor player confessionals. If the contestant is interesting, has something to say or add to the show they air it. Notice the most animated are seen and heard often; the quiet ones with little to say aren't.
Some people who got purpled though are not boring. The editors just got obsessed with one player.
I mean, Purple Kelly's edit was not done out of boringness, her edit was done out of vitriol and spite. The rest, yeah, usually, even though some really entertaining characters have been Purpled (Cite Keith and Whitney, where they're purpled to high hell in Survivor, but they're actually amazing in the Amazing Race where they're constantly done with everyone else's and it's hilarious), but Purple Kelly's, they literally have her first shot be her obscured by a tree, and almost every shot has her either facing away from the camera, looking dumb, or straight up hidden by something.
This is half true. Editors will favor drama (even melodrama) over the mundane.
But in the case of Purple Kelly (from what I gathered from this video- honestly haven't looked into it much myself) I think the editing is a bit more personal. Purple Kelly ends up being anti-show. As in: If we the audience are shown an edit of her time that is more sympathetic to her plight, we have to question the practices of the show/production of Survivor. She is marginalized so aggressively so that we, the audience, think she must just be 'boring' and 'not say much' so that there isn't any sympathy built up for her when she quits.
Put another way, a business isn't going to post critical testimonials on their front page. Even if a critique is well-thought out and fairly balances pros and cons from a professional or experienced reviewer- the quality of the review has nothing to do with it. It's all about the content. It's a mild and sensible (from the business perspective) form of propaganda.
I think the worst Purple edit we have seen is Chelsea from Ghost Island.
As an Australian I watch more Australian survival and I think the editing is different. I never seen someone be purpled. I think aussie survivor focus on a big picture rather than individual narrative.
Edit: About quitters as well. Everyone feels bad in Australia when someone quits. In the current season, some just recently quit because he had back pain. The editing makes you feel sorry for the player because obviously, it has to be a big deal to give up $500K and they make you empathize.
There is always someone purpled in Australian Survivor.
Imo Survivor AU is amazing. Reminds me of back when Survivor US was more fun and exciting. Every time I convince one of my friends who love Survivor to give AU a chance they end up loving it. The host is amazing. And of course Luke is literally one of my all time favorite players in any Survivor, easily top 3
