WRAPPED UP IN LOVE AGAIN - ALBERT KING - Al Jackson Jr. Drum Cover

- I love this drum groove, by the great Al Jackson Jr. This is what I often refer to as an 'upside down' groove, because the back beat is displaced. It's something that Bonzo often did, for example in Whole Lotta Love, and Custard Pie.
I hear a connection to Al's drumming with Bonzo...in the feel, the fat pocket, the swung accents. It's no secret that Bonzo and JPJ loved R&B and Soul music, and certainly listened to albums like this (Albert King's 'Years Gone By'). This one came out in 1969 and featured the legendary Booker T. and The M.G.'s , with Steve Cropper on guitar, Booker T. Jones on organ, and Donald 'Duck' Dunn on bass. Jones told me personally that 'Duck' Dunn was one of his heroes, along with James Jamerson.
If you're not familiar with Al Jackson, look him up in wikipedia and check out his drumming. He played on hundreds of session, with the greatest soul artists, like Al Green, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Bill Withers and many more. For feel and groove , he was in a class of his own IMO.

Yes, these are the infectious grooves
@@BONHAMOLOGY Cheers George - Happy New Yer and all the very best to you and your family.
Would love to hear more covers tangential and influential to Bonham. Besides I think you've covered everything by LZ.
Thanks, yeah I'll be doing more along these lines. I also have a lot of live Bonham I will still be covering.
Just found this, what a great cover of the immortal Al Jackson. I've been listening to this album and this track since I was 15, I'm 68 now! You show exquisite taste covering this track and you do a great job on it. Regards. 👍👍👍
I Like Support Drum Covers ! This is a Nice Job ! 👏🤘👏🔥🥢🥁👏🤘

He certainly did!
Georgie.... that bass drum sound is sweet.
Love it 😀
Excellent!!
So smooth! 👌🏻
Rock on brother, Hey to Terry 🤘🤟✌
Sounds so good!
Sounds great!
That Stax sound and groove. You know it when you hear it. This was so cool! Al Jackson Jr. is an amazing drummer. May he rest in peace. Hope you have a great 2022. Cheers! 👍👍✌️🥁
Thanks, Dwayne...same to you!
No doubt Bonham borrowed a little bit from Al. One of my favorite Albert King songs because of the groove. Nice Work 👍
Thanks
Nice! I liked the accents on the snare, or should I say the unaccented notes? What I mean is that I liked the combination of accented and unaccented notes. I guess what I'm really trying to say is that I liked the dynamics of the snare drum playing. Lol.
😁 so I take it you dig it then, Alan!?
@@BONHAMOLOGY I digged it! I dug it! Awesome as always! Nice studio chops. 😊👍👍
Love it George, nice change from the Zep! You should do more R&B, Funk. The stuff that inspired LZ. Anyway, I dig it all!👍🏼
Thanks Tom, I likely will be doing more stuff like that
Nice groove man!
Amazing you cover my friend..😊👍🙏🤘
Great stuff, I've joined a Blues Club recently. Got myself some new sound Edge Hi Hats, I've got a few hundred hours to put in on my Zepp. It's soo awesome you keep the learning pumping. Happy New Year's George 👍, from New Zealand
Thanks Jason, best wishes to have a ball playing in 2022!
Wonderful sound and playing, George. Those GB hats? Is there a little chunk missing?
These are the 15 inch preserial 602's. They had two cracks, so I had them cut out
Nice George!
Tough groove! Relax
I am relaxed!
You have a new subscriber 👏👏🥁

😁 Thanks!
@@BONHAMOLOGY that’s amazing, it’s unbelievable how close you are to Bonzo!
All the best in 2022!
@@MM-lp5pp Thanks, same to you!
YES! YES! YES!! This is AWESOME!! So glad you playin' the blues my man!!
Also, whagt your left hand crash? 602 yes?
Yes, preserial
King George. Got the groove
Just looked it up in the dictionary. Four and (action verb, musical term): rhythmic way station of funk; minted
by James Brown; and personal favorite blasting cap of deceased drummer John Bonham. Verbatim.
Yep, the old 4+. Or in Custard Pies case ....2+
@@BONHAMOLOGY You had me rapt with attention to every word of the WLL/Custard Pie beat inversion breakdown in
Physical Graffiti - Analysis and Demo / Part 1. How about Jim's Blues sometime, start to finish? The various measures
you played before are too tantalizing not to. When Terry said it was his favorite Bonham track, well, it became mine too.
WOW!! Wonderful groove. Really enjoying this. Thank You for sharing.
George, great pocket! What are the hi hats today? Happy new year!
Thanks Earl! Those are 15-in sound edge 602s probably from the late 60s. I had cracked the top cymbal in two places so I had to have them dremeled out, as you can see from the video. Happy New Year to you as well!
I really enjoy your videos and admire and am jealous of your talent, I'm a hack compared to you. I was wondering if you've ever tried old Y&T with Leo Haze drumming, he was very Bonzo like with his Bass Drum. Just a suggestion, keep up the great playing...TY
Thanks, I never have...I'm not very familiar with Y and T but Leonard Haze was incredible. Super quick foot and hands
@@BONHAMOLOGY If I may I recommend you start with Mean Streak, it's a great album. Many others to choose from but I'd start with that one. I got turned on to them in 83 when I was stationed in California, been hooked ever since!
@@rickcarter4227 Cool, yeah I've heard of that album.
Nice I see you do, do it all :)
Excellent stuff George great groove happy new year sir, soul is my fav , Muscle shoals, stax, Motown those studio bands some of the greatest songs and drumming ever done what an era to have lived in music wise
Yessir!
Great playing as always George! Can i ask you for a tip? Is there a secret to stopping the snare bzzzz that rattles after hitting the snare hard, especially off center, or is it just a reality we all must live with and experience?
There are so many factors....the tension of the reso head, the snare bed, the type of wires, the acoustics of the room. You have to just experiment with a lot of things and see if anything works. You can start by tightening up your bottom head. Some of it you just have to live with because if you make the snares too tight then you'll choke the drum. It's better to have a little buzz than to have a choked drum. Generally when the music is playing you don't hear it anyway
I used to be concerned with that same buzzing of the snare wires also. George is right! One thing that helped was the tuning aspect with respect to the toms. Some tone intervals cause it to buzz more since the snare will resonate more. I actually like the buzz as George to avoid that choked sound. Personally, I will tension the wires so that the sustain of the buzz is to my satisfaction, not too long or short when striking the snare and finally if you’re jamming by yourself or in a group, the buzz will be insignificant for sake of staying in the pocket and adding the creativity in response to what the other musicians are playing. Bonzo was such a master at that!!
Awesome stuff, you could totally sample your drumming and sell it as sample packs online!
I've been thinking about doing it, I plan to soon. I'm not sure how to go about selling ....I've heard Yurt Rock is good.
@@BONHAMOLOGY LoL, I have no idea as well 😂
What snare was that??? I have never tried one that deep,,,limited funds unfortunately....🤓🇺🇲🥁🍺🍕💯
It's the usual LM 402 Supra. 70's vintage
@@BONHAMOLOGY I was wondering if it was old,,,,sounds awesome,,,,almost like having a higher tone tom?? Love it,,,will definitely start looking for something similar,,,but probably not vintage unfortunately lol..rock on man,,.🤓🇺🇲🥁
@@timwickersham869 Tim, the reissues are really good. If you replaced the stock hoops with lighter 1.6 mm Triple Flanged hoops you'll be good. I used a muffling ring on this video too. Roots Ring. 😁
Hey George
Great playing George! What are you using to get your audio into the computer?!
I'm was using an Allen and Heath mixer with a USB out to my laptop. I just got a new Focusrite interface though which I will be using henceforth.
@@BONHAMOLOGY nice!!! I was wondering if that mixer multitracks because it sounds great 👍🏾
How do you get this snare sound, it sounds amazing, tuning tips or tutorial?
Is that a chip in the top hi-hat cymbal? I always wonder how long you should use cymbals even after they’ve cracked or chipped.
kick sounds sweet . i wound totally take that tom off the BD and get it on a snare stand. it is just the rite thing to do.
