Bang on. I wouldn’t even rank Sonic ‘06 in the top 5 worst Sonic games. Sonic ‘06 genuinely does a lot right and has so many fun elements - despite the many flaws it has. I would happily play through the game again, and then I look at Sonic Forces and simply can’t bring myself to. I would have to say my least favourite Sonic game is either Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric or Sonic Blast for Game Gear/MS.
Totally agreed. There’s a bunch of other really easy and obvious titles I could have put on this list like a lot of the portable games, botched ports, or some of the really weird ones like Sonic School House (best game ever, I know), but I wanted to limit to major releases that put a decent dent in the series’ reputation. But if you do consider all these other miscellaneous games, Sonic 06 is probably truly a mid-tier Sonic game really only limited on the technical side. I thinks it’s probably the greatest travesty in the entire history of Sonic that it didn’t get the dev time it needed. Imagine a world where 06 was actually good. The entire “modern” Sonic landscape would be entirely different and I think for the better.
@@chaomix I'd agree! 06 should've been a mid-tier game. It doesn't steep that low compared to the other games mentioned. But boy, the world would've been a different place if 06 was developed without constraints.
As a lifelong fan since the original, I rank the Genesis-era and Mania as the very best of the Sonic catalog but I still put Sonic 06 (despite all of the many justifiable complaints) as a palatable experience right up underneath Adventure 1 & 2, Generations, and Nights Into Dreams as Sonic Team's very best polygonal/3d titles. I liken Shadow and Sonic Heroes similarly as kinda but not quite. I appreciate parts of Unleashed and Colors sporadically but the rest of the games are not noteworthy IMO.
Believe it or not, I think Shadow with a gun could've actually worked as a concept if it was done the right way. Instead of making him a violent edgelord in a "mature" setting, they should've just made him a Bond-style secret agent. They wouldn't have had to destroy Shadow's established personality to make it work, either. Just like Bond, Shadow is already cool, calm, collected, and focused. They could've either done that or brought back Gamma and made the game about him.
Imo shadow wasn't very edgelordy until you start to reach the end of the dark story other than that, shadow was for the most part a wandering soul looking for his way, I mean just play any other story in that game (more so the heroic ones)
He was dark and brooding, what he wasn't was needlessly violent and edgy. Look back in SA2, on the few spare moments to himself Shadow just stands by the window of Ark, looking down at Earth and thinking back to his time with Maria. Being an introvert and brooding aren't mutually exclusive, hell I'd say it's more common for an introvert to brood.
It is SO depressing hearing what we could have had with Sonic Boom. If you've got time, listen to the amazing Wha Happun by Matt McMuscles. SEGA totally screwed the dev team by deciding it was going to be a Wii U exclusive title for some reason, and they had to get a whole new game engine and everything. Plus they actually made really genuine attempts at making creative lore and stuff for it, but it all just got shoved into the dustbin because there was no time and no money. It's SO depressing. If SEGA treated its dev teams better, both 06 and Boom could have been masterpieces. They just don't reward passion.
Sega wanted out of their 3 Sonic exclusive deal with Nintendo and Mania and Forces were not going on that console so they threw BRB under the bus to prevent getting sued by Nintendo had they refused.
I have to know more what it was supposed to be I always hear about the potential of sonic boom if it had time but for me I don't see that for me boom had too many problems with it that if given time would still fail one of my biggest issues with boom was the horrible characterization
That horrible game can go burn in a trash bin. It has horrible art direction, horrible writing and horrible characterisation. That game is a parody of actual Sonic games, making Sonic Colors look like Shakespeare by comparison, and that’s all on BRB. My guess is that Sega saw it was gonna be a bad and divisive game and just threw it under the buss for the Nintendo exclusivity deal.
Never played Lost World but I actually like the story. (Not to be confused with the writing.) It's really the only time in the series we see conflict and trust issues between Sonic and Tails, and it shows Sonic's hastiness as a character flaw that needs to be dealt with.
As a Tails fan, this is kinda insulting actually. He does a complete 180 from seamlessly agreeing with Sonic that Eggman kinda sucks to suddenly saying Sonic trusts Eggman more than he trusts him. Sonic's hastiness is definitely shown, but it's never really given as much thought; it's never pointed out to him, and instead not falling for Tails's whining is what Sonic apologizes to him for at the end. Unfounded trust issues and a character flaw that are not pointed out... are hardly better than 06, which literally has Silver's arc basically being the latter (but replace hastiness with naivete) but much better executed (despite the script still needing a revision or two), and does not need the needless drama of the former to actually have stakes.
Sonic 06 was better than most 2010s Sonic Games & ironically I would rather replay Forces than Colors. At least Labyrinth, Spinball, Tails SkyPatrol, & Drift were obvious cashgrab spinoffs made on older hardware in a more primitive time for the gaming industry. That's kind of why we give the awful Sonic 1 (except the Whitehead & Jam versions) a pass.
@@dylanbaron__ Are you referring to Forces being bad simply because the 2010s Direction for Sonic was bad? With Sonic 06 being better than nearly all of the 2010s Games in the Sonic Series? Or are you referring to how Sonic 1 was kind of bad & those older games actually were made in an era with lower standards? 8-Bit & 16-Bit Expectations being lower than later console expectations.
I honestly feel bad for Sonic Team, especially with the first game on the list, cuz it shows they did their research. They conducted serveys and everything, as well as making the conclusion that Sonic wouldn't be the right character to wield a gun, so they were clearly trying to make something that wouldn't deter the fans. They just fucked up somewhere along that road, and now we have Shadow the Hedgehog
I think the biggest problem for Shadow is that it was too out left field for a Sonic game. That being said however I can’t help but love that game. I don't mind the branching path, having to replay Westopolis to get the multiple ending or the guns
Yeah those games really are worse than 06, I'd rather play a glitchy mess that tried to advance the franchise than a game that plays it safe and ruins other things the older games established.
I wouldn't and I don't know why anyone would. Though maybe that's just a result of me having actually played 06 and physically being stopped from progressing at multiple points due to gamebreaking bugs.
@@TheKabuto90 it's called high functioning autism and that's what most sonic fans have. how can anyone enjoy a game where you can die or get softlocked at any point instead of a game you can actually play??
06 vs Forces is akin to Cyberpunk 2077 vs Concord. Yeah, Concord is a much more functional game, but literally no one cared. Cyberpunk, on the other hand, was a game that was a bit too ambitious, and would be essentially a sequel to Sonic 06, were it not for the luxury of online patches.
Ah Sonic Forces, to think instead of a cheap marketing gimmick and that THING will a silly, little toy gun we could have had the other characters playable, again free to use their own skills, and no stuck with the wisp gun because that would be stupid. Plus Classic's inclusion, with his exclusive 2D stages, becomes even more redundant when you consider that both Modern Sonic and the OC have 2D sections of their own. So again, why was he there? Though why was there that big giant sandworm in Green Hill if we didn't fight it? Why was there those Death Egg Robots in the city, if we didn't fight them? Why was there those kaiju Infinite monsters in Metropolis if we didn't fight it? What's the point of having these things as merely set dressing when they could be used as boss fights? Same goes for Shadow and Chaos and they weren't just hidden away in the background, what with being part of Infinite's Ruby Phantom group. Also with saying about having the other characters playable again, it'd also help expand the story alot, rather than being stuck with a couple of mutes. Like just imagine if Tails was playable again - for the first time in 14 years - we could have had this! During the fight against Infinite rather rather than having his tablet thing he'd be racing to met Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds. To help turn the tide in the war against Eggman. But by the time he gets there he finds Sonic fighting Infinite and its not going well. Filled with a surge of emotion, seeing Sonic in such a bad way, Tails lets out a scream and goes Super (god, could this be anymore Dragonball like?). He puts up a good fight against Infinite but it's not enough as he burns himself out unable to beat him. Sonic would have gotten enough time to catch his breath to save Tails before Knuckles swings by to get the fox cub out of there on Sonic's instructions. Word later reaches the resistance that Sonic dead and Tails loses it. He runs away and spends the next six months wallowing in despair until one day while looking for a place to hide during a thunderstorm he finds himself in his old workshop, and inside it the original Tornado, Sonic's plane. Despite being depressed for the past six months, the sight of the bi-plane puts a spark back in Tails' eyes as he tries to get the plane back in the air, but due to his mental state not being the greatest he can't do it. He looks at the set of keys Sonic gave him for the plane and after remembering what happened to Sonic he breaks down into tears feeling guilty that he couldn't save him. Chaos then appears which scares the young fox cub, much like in Forces, and when he attacks Tails the fox cub makes no real effort to defend himself because his confidence has been shattered and he feels he can't fight anymore. After being smacked about by Chaos for abit, he sees him turn his attention to the Tornado and begin attacking it. Tails' eyes widen in horror not wanting to see the plane, his only connection he has left to Sonic be destroyed, and that forces him to get back to his feet and fight. After driving Chaos away he feels a weight's been lift and manages to get the Tornado running again so he can get back home to the resistance base and help the others. The ofcourse word would get that Sonic is alive and Tails go storm the prison to save him, after doing a few other missions while building his confidence back up. Also as well in the time leading up to that, with fighting the war against Eggman, in Forces, it wouldn't have been going so well and through running and hiding for a while it'd start to take it's toll on Tails' metal state. Hence why he's freezing up while facing regular Egg Pawns he would have smashed no problem, without breaking a sweat. But after Infinite "kills" Sonic, it proves to be the straw that broke the camel's back, hence why he's not as vengeful as he was in SA2, after seeing Eggman "kill" Sonic, by ejecting him out into space in that pod. Sorry if I've ranted too much, but Forces really annoys me, especially considering how badly they handled Tails! He should have been allowed to do things, instead of being stuck trying to get Classic the OC over, not even allowed to smash a single robot at the start of the game, or take part in the fight against the Ruby Phantoms.
While I do think there was a better way to execute the custom character idea (rogue Robot? Just better writing and gameplay?), II otherwise agree with most of what you said here. What if we got a Tails vs Chaos boss fight?
@@syweb2 that's what really should have happened, Tails vs Chaos. I did see a video recently talking about Classic and it made mention of that scene with his appearance saying not only was Tails made to look weak but so was Chaos as well, what with him being taken out in one hit purely as a means of making this bad tribute act look strong, even though Sonic himself couldn't beat Chaos 0 in one hit back in the day.
They didn't even handle the ruby correctly it says in the manual of sonic maina that the phantom ruby can rewrite reality (op as hell I know) and instead we get holograms wtf
While I agree with your points about the problems with Rise of Lyric, I am a bit of an apologist for it. It had a lot of potential, and I think it could've been amazing if BigRedButton had been allowed to make the game they originally envisioned, rather than being forced to change the gameplay and tone, as well as rush to get it working on the WiiU. That all doesn't change the fact that the product we got is a mess, though. However, one thing I will defend about the game is the animation. The character animation in Rise of Lyric is the best in the entire series. The in-game animations have a fantastic flow to them, as well as an excellent sense of squash and stretch (something the series should definitely embrace, as it does wonders visually), the idles and other miscellaneous animations are more full of life than anything else, the cutscenes have excellent body language, and better facial expressions than anything ever in a Sonic game. The game may suck, but the animation is on point

4:46-4:53 On top of that, considering this is a list of games worse than 06, it should be critical that comparing Shadow's character in that game to the this predecessor, it is SHOCKING how different they are in quality. That wouldn't be saying much but believe it or not, the version of Shadow from 06 is regarded by fans as the best version of the character in the entire FRANCHISE.
That is really exaggerating the quality of Shadow's writing in 06 lol. Shadow's story is the closest 06's story gets to decent but it still has the problem all the character writing in 06 has where the characters are generally really flat and muted, mostly existing to give dry exposition. They even managed to make Omega boring.
Recently, I’ve played Shadow the Hedgehog for the first time and… gameplay wise, there’s nothing wrong with the (GameCube) game. The only gun necessary to progress in the game is the wall -mover thing and the only automobile needed was the jumper to reach certain platforms. And story-wise it does retcon a couple character moments he had in Sonic Heroes, but only SOME of the alternative storylines. You can explain how he’s edgy without the guns all you want, but you’re wrong. For an amnesiac that only remembers the death of a little girl and being told his origin by 4 different people, Shadow seems to handle it pretty well. Conclusion: Shadow became edgy only when the current voice actor declared him edgy.
I really enjoyed Secret Rings myself. I don’t feel having a different gameplay style made it bad, and I had a lot of fun with it. That said I probably need to get around to replaying it and seeing if it still holds up. Also, surprised that these were all modern Sonic games. There are definitely a few Classic games that are worse than 06. Not the main Genesis 3, of course, but some of the ones that were ports or had an unnumbered title
Sonic 1 (except Jam & Whitehead versions) was way worse than 06, although like most Classic Games it gets a pass thanks to being made in a primitive time for the game industry. Also Shadow & Secret Rings haven't been Modern for some time being considered 4kids Era Games these days.
Oh don’t get me wrong, 06 is a train wreck in a lot of ways but it has so much more passion than most of the games on this list. You can tell the devs wanted to make something amazing but just didn’t have the time.
@@chaomix I completely agree, I have played a lot of 06 and had quite a bit of fun with it, i can tell they actually tried, I can't say the same for Forces, that game was just lazy.
@@chaomix my only beef with 06 is how they handled they final story, everything leading up to the Solaris incident was great, Story wise, the Music was great, the levels looked amazing despite the gameplay trying to screw us over the whole time, and if they had moved the mouths more to the side of the face for the Sonic cast, it would have the best graphics of any Sonic Game to this date, and Mephiles is STILL the best Sonic Villain outside of the Archie's. Like, I won't say I like '06, but I at least know it's not as bad as most of the games here, and when I think about it, the only game I really liked on your list was Shadow the Hedgehog, between the music, the CGI Cutscenes being AMAZING, and Jason Griffith's Shadow voice, it wasn't good, in fact in my stand-alone comment I say it's awful, and list ways to make it better, but it was still my second Sonic game EVER, and it's why I love Shadow, and why I HATE how Shadow is portrayed now. At least in Shadow the Hedgehog he had a REASON to be more edgy than he normally should be. I'd be salty as hell too if I was being blackmailed into gathering rocks for some random alien while having next to no memories at all, being chased by all these annoying fools, while also being wrongfully hunted down for a crime I didn't commit, and having my only memories being of my closest friend dying in front of my eyes.
I think Sonic 4 Episode 2 is too good to be on this list, or anywhere near it. The game improves upon the music, being less ear-grating, the supposed "art style" of the first game, now being in full 3D, the physics, feeling more realistic and the Zones, all standing apart from the previous ones.
I think I would also add Sonic Free Riders. Horrible use of motion controls. My issue with Sonic 4 episode 2 was the waiting around. They have bosses spend like 30 seconds introducing themselves. Great video.
Thanks! Really appreciate it, I also love your content! I kind of thought about doing Free Riders but I tried to limit it to just “major” release games. There’s a TON of spin-off games that I could have easily included on this list honestly. Maybe for a possible sequel to this video? 👀
@@chaomix For sure, and I'm sure there's some Game Gear Games that have probably aged like Milk that could be looked into. Just last night I tried to play Sonic 2 Master System...emphasis on tried.
The only issue I have with your Forces point, Forces is far from the first game that had short stages Hell, Colors had more stages that you can blink and theyre over
The difference between Colors and Forces I have come to find is that while the colors levels can also end much too quickly, the level design is actually good, where as forces feels so unfulfilling to play because they level design requires minimul player input AND the levels are so short.
Sorry, but Sonic 4 Episode II was way better than Episode I. Physis, momentum, level design, music, everything was much better. Idk how anyone could play both games and say Episode II was worse.
Hang On, Sonic 06 Did a lot of good things like the 3 storyline’s with sonic, shadow, and silver, good level design, a pretty good story, lots of playable characters like tails, knuckles, rouge, omega, blaze, and Amy, also sonic games these days have barely any other playable characters, 06 also follows the style of SA1 and SA2 with gameplay, sonic 06 was also a very ambitious game, and sonic 06 even got a pc remake, and now even a mobile remake with kingdom valley, so it seems if the fans are recreating sonic 06 and not games like unleashed, well 06 must be loved by a lot of fans, so yeah i dunno why people hate sonic 06 because SA1 and SA2 had a lot of glitches as well, I would even say SA1 is more broken then sonic 06, but this is just my opinion.
As long as you keep it as an opinion.. Seriously i never had any glitches occur on Sonic Adventure games, but i did suffer some of the annoying glitches on 06.
@@andreasmeelie1889 uh I didn’t say anything was wrong with that. I just didn’t know it was a challenge and was shocked because I thought it was a glitch or something lol
1. some people have rather different opinions 2. it is sadly only the wii remote to blame 3. I agree with ep 1, disagree with ep2 4. I agree 5. I disagree 6. I agree
Opinions are worthless what counts are facts but the Sonic community doesnt like those. How else can they defend trash like 06. People who have no arguments always say "in my opinion" and its very annoying. Im not saying you cant enjoy it and have fun with the game btw theres nothing wrong with liking and enjoying a shitty game. Its always the same with most gamers. "I like it so its good, i dont like it so its bad". Thats such a shallow way of judging games. F.e. i hate SA2 but its a good game, i cant deny that.
As much as I constantly gush about our lovable blue blur, even I feel that SEGA has become very distant from the key strengths to Sonic over these last few years. Though Sonic '06 may be a glitch-fest, at least you can see sparks of a familiar passion, if only a few of them. While I'm mentioning glitches, let me just say that these do not always make or break the games. Some can actually be quite healthy to the longevity of the series. I need only point to the existence of combos in fighting games to illustrate my point: these were considered a "glitch" when they were discovered in the first Street Fighter game, but rather than discard them entirely, Capcom adopted that feature for future titles, as did other developers. Unless some glitches have spiraled into disasters that must absolutely be addressed, your first priority when making a game should be the accessibility factor. And while I can't quite judge on Sonic Boom as I have yet to play that (and I eventually will for the sake of content), some of the other games you listed are woefully lacking in that area. Then there's the reward factor that comes from mastery of the game, and I have yet to feel a sense of satisfaction in any of the more recent titles (that aren't Sonic Mania). Oh, and you aren't alone. I acknowledge Shadow the Hedgehog's shortcomings, yet it's *kinda* one of my favorites. I could say more, but this comment is already turning into a novel. Suffice it to say, I feel you and I could have a lot of discussions over this subject. I've just subbed. Keep these vids coming!
Given that Sonic Mania was basically an official fan game, you could take it as an implicit admission that Sega realizds fans know what makes Sonic work better than they do.
I came to this revelation as of the latest sonic central. Sega doesn’t really understand sonic as of late, where’s his attitude. Movie sonic I felt captured what made sonic sonic. He had a combination of snark, attitude and heart.he felt vulnerable yet confident like a 3 dimensional character. Modern sonic from colors onward doesn’t feel vulnerable and has a constant layer of snark. No real attitude like adventure sonic. Same goes with robotnik, movie robotnik has a great mix of the cartoony robotnik that we have seen with a more serious robotnik from satam and both adventure games. The new robotnik just feels like a cartoon character with wacky evil schemes, where is the seriousness, the threatening aura. Where is the robotnik who blew up the moon, the robotnik who unleashed chaos, the robotnik who roboticised all of mobius
"People let bad Sonic games get away with it because they're focused on Sonic '06." >First game mentioned is Ow the Edge, a game nobody lets get away with anything and that the Internet arguably roasted _harder_ than '06
@@Activeshooterdo Sonic CD controls well, features fan-favorite characters, and has great music, which for a lot of people ameliorates a lot of misgivings that they might have with the game's direction.
Ok guys, let’s talk. If you think that Sonic 06 is the worst video game of ALL TIME, your REALLY need to play more video games. It isn’t even the worst Sonic game.
I went into Ep 2 knowing people generally consider the physics to be better only to be shocked that they honestly felt less responsive than Ep 1. The homing attack doesn’t give you instant acceleration like in Ep 1, which was a cool and quick way to get some initial speed.
@@chaomix I consider it to be an improvement to the game's balancing in light of Tails' inclusion in the single-player mode. They knew the tag-team moves made the game easier, so they didn't want it to be too easy.
The only things that ruin 06 for me are the bad physics and glitches. Level design, combat, moveset, artstyle, even Silver's gameplay are really fun for me. Definitely deserves a remake, those physics really sour it for me...
Sonic 06 is not only not the worst Sonic game, it's not even the worst Sonic game released *that day*. Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis released that day too. Forces? The heck? Sure it's worse than Generations but "not as good as Generations" doesn't mean it's worse than 06.
I dont really see why the cartoony artstyle for lost world is a bad thing, sonic a cartoony design, my main issue with 06 is sonic, a cartoon character being put into such a realistic environment
Just because something is cartoony doesn't mean it fits with other cartoons, otherwise we could start putting Fist of the North Star characters into Peppa Pig. It's not a matter of something looking cartoony, it's whether the art-style fits, and in honesty I'm not sure Lost World does. Generations had a much more organic looking style and whilst I'm not a huge fan of the faux-Pixar bobble head humans in Unleashed, I think they fit better as well. I'm just not a fan of everything looking like fondant like in Lost World and even Forces. Everything is too chunky looking and textureless and to me, at least, feels like it clashes slightly with Sonic's model. Especially Lost World. It's the opposite problem of 06 imo. My ideal personally is Heroes, SA1(DC), or Unleashed environments, with humans in a similar art-style to that one drawing Uekawa did of Hatsune Miku, and the animal characters looking like Secret Rings (underrated model, if you ask me)
People take Shadow too seriously, like come on, tell me the Omachao Launcher isn't one the greatest weapon in video games ever. He doesn't even need to ride a motorcycle or all those vehicles, he just wants to, for fun. The Edgehog has a low key playful side to him. Honestly the game just needed the mission system revamped a little. Make it not require 100% of the objective (maybe still have it be an option for completionist sake) , indicate how many targets are in a level section to make the warping between checkpoints useful, and don't make all factions hostile to you all times. If i'm helping the aliens they shouldn't be shooting at me, or required to kill to open a door.
I think SEGA should contract Insomniac Games to make a full remake of Shadow the Hedgehog, with Insomniac given free rein to redesign the game (with some requirements, like momentum, of course). Insomniac seems like the best people to make this specific game considering their work on previous games which included many of the same aspects, like Spider-Man and the Ratchet series, just waiting to be combined.
I think the Sonic 06 bashers are older Sonic fans who grew up when 06 was still recent, and who haven’t kept up with modern releases since Colors. For a while until I got heavily back into the series, I didn’t know anything about Lyric, Lost World, etc, just that they were apparently “not good.”
I was just personally offended by Sonic Forces for bringing back all these characters just to have them do *nothing*.... Let us play as Team Chaotix, or Rouge or Shadow or even Knuckles just SOMETHING. But no. Sonic or Classic Sonic. No fun allowed. I am so frustrated knowing that all these characters were there for what should've been the f*cking climax of the series just to have them not even be playable and having them do nothing.. even Chaos... like come on.......
I tried not to include small fry games like that. There’s a LOT of them. Tried doing only “major” release games for the most part. If you include games like those though, there’s a LOT of games worse than 06 lol.
@@whoeverest_the_whateverest Because it’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the sequel to one of gaming’s greatest trilogies ever. It was kind of supposed to be a big deal, and I’d say it was a major Sonic release.
I agree with most of these but in my opinion you completely missed the mark on Sonic 4 episode 2 and Lost World. Sonic 4 Episode 2 improved on Sonic 4 episode 1 in almost every way possible, and the physics are not worse, where are you getting this from? They are WAY closer to the classics, not perfect but much closer and it has more unique levels. While I agree that Lost World has a totally shit story and if you are playing Sonic games for the story 06 is much better. The gameplay in Lost World is SO Freeking fun once you learn the mechanics and the game is pretty well polished and runs very nicely. You are completely wrong when you say the levels don't have a lot going for them or alternate paths, some of the Levels in Lost World are ULTRA creative.
I have to know more what it was supposed to be I always hear about the potential of sonic boom if it had time but for me I don't see that for me boom had too many problems with it that if given time would still fail one of my biggest issues with boom was the horrible characterization
One of the questions that I couldn't get an answer about Forces is the appearance of Silver. It's natural for him to appear when his world is in danger, but he never mentioned it (or maybe I just missed it). It's like he was just placed there and nothing. You know, he has his powers, but there is absolutely no context given for his future or anything like that.
06 was stunning but unpolished. It was a VERY distant and nostalgic memory for me as when I first got the game, I returned it for Infamous 2. I got it back to through EBay and played it, reigniting my memory. I thought the setting, the gameplay, and (most of) the story were awesome!
You could say Sonic Forces is basically a compilation of every non-glitch problem about the games: mix the infamous”try-hardness” of Shadow and 06, the lackadaisical humor approach culminated in Lost World and Boom, Lost World’s poor level design, the 2D style that’s been plaguing most of the latest games, and you’ve got Sonic Forces.
Me: Oh He's going to defend Sonic 06 this should be good... Starts bad mouthing Shadow the Hedgehog (game) Me: ah, you've chosen death. In all seriousness I'll give you an ear full about how you are wrong about Shadow the Hedgehog (game, and possibly character too). Starting with gameplay, Shadow controls almost identically to how he played in Sonic Heroes. The physics are also the same as it was in Sonic Heroes. Shadow moves fast, and his jump is sufficient enough to overcome most obstacles. The control the player has over Shadows jump is one of the best in the series making the actual platforming pretty easy. Guns being a newly added gameplay feature works really well, with no manual aim. As long as you face your target you will hit them. The level design and structure is mostly the same as the previous three games (Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes). Having an obvious way forward, but having multiple paths a player could explore. Using knowledge of Shadows abilities can allow players to skip sections of the stages. Another new gameplay feature the game has is the checkpoint system, allowing a player to go to specific spots of a stage to complete an objective. This game also let players finally use Shadow's chaos abilities in a main sonic game. For Story, Shadow the Hedgehog is the conclusion of the story arc that was started for him in Sonic Heroes. As much as people love to complain about Shadow gaining amnesia from falling back to Earth after the events of Sonic Adventure 2, It would make sense that Shadow would have had gained some sort of injury from falling to the planet from space. Shadow's amnesia being the reason he is interested in his past and who he is. Black Doom seeming to know who Shadow is would very much interest him. The players also get some closure to the Shadow Android sub plot that was started in Sonic Heroes, which ultimately connects to Shadow wanting to know who he is. Since Sega/Sonic Team planted the seed of is Shadow really Shadow in the players mind. Especially when many players were convinced that he did die at the end of SA2 (Even though the fault of that lies in SA2's presentation and the directors intent to have Shadow killed off at the time). Now while most of Shadow the Hedgehog (game) 's story is non canon, since the only canon parts of the games story is that Shadow's adventure starts in Westopolis and ends in the Black Comet, where the last story starts. Shadow gets closure on his past, saves the world, and decides to move on from his past. While not specifically in the Shadow the Hedgehog game, we do know that he puts the grudge he may have had with G.U.N. behind him and ends up joining the organization. I could go on more but I think the gameplay and the story should be sufficient in convincing that Shadow is not a bad game. As for your bad game list, I don't specifically disagree, but there are worse Sonic games than some of the ones you have listed. Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Shuffle, and Sonic Pocket Adventure to name a few. (I hope you don't mis interpret my comment, I do enjoy your videos and hope you keep making them.)
For the other games, I tried only including major titles while trying to avoid handheld titles and super small spinoff games. But yeah your opinions about ShTH are totally valid, I can agree with some of those points.
I think forces being below 06 is a bit uncalled for. I personally would sooner play 06 for it being so buggy and messy and thus entertaining, but forces is much more fundamentally solid, its just boring. I would have put chronicles there instead, personally
I feel the same way though. I’d much sooner play 06 than Forces simply for the amusement. But like, that’s the whole thing. 06 is more enjoyable which makes it a better game IMO. The worst thing a video game can be is boring.
WHAT?! Sonic 4 Episode 2 being worse than 06?! No no no, no! I haven't played 06... but Sonic 4 Episode 2 definetly is NOT worse than 06, not even objectively
I think that sonic 06 is hillarious and thats why I love it (also I am a biased bitch since I loved it as a kid), also I actually like Shadow too as well as Sonic 4 episode 2.
Hey there. I just found your channel. I was surprised that you have so little subscribers. I really liked this video. I was well structured and well argued. I don't entirely agree about Lost World and Sonic 4, but I can definitely see where you are coming from. Anyways, you now have a new subscriber, so congratulations on a video well done.
Thanks man! Appreciate your support. To be fair, I still enjoy both of those games, they were just a bit disappointing in several ways. Most games on this list I can still enjoy even though I consider them “bad” yknow?
@@chaomix Yeah, I totally get that. To be fair Sonic 4 suffered a heavy case of false advertising. It still baffles me that SEGA did that. I actively have to remind myself that it isn't a classic game whenever I play it. It's helpful to think about ep1 as a Sonic Rush game, where the homing attack replaces the boost. And ep2 is more platform based. I really hope some day we get an overhaul mod like with Forces.
I don’t understand the hate for sonic 06. It’s like adventure 3 and I enjoyed it. It had Mephiles the dark the best sonic villian after Chaos. I actually rank 06 in A tier it’s not a trashy game with trashy story like Sonic boom the worst 3d sonic game
If Shadow The Hedgehog had no guns, only hero and dark stories (only 2 stories, similar to SA2), rebuilding Lost Impact to be similar to Final Rush (SA2) and spliting the game to separate some of the levels, that would’ve made the game a bit more fine or fun, you know what I mean.
I would mostly agree with this video.. But i highly disagree on sonic lost world I also rather pass 4 boring hours with forces, than a long time passing through the glitchy fest with bad hub worlds, filler misions, and lot more that is 06.
Honestly, yes, I do agree Sonic Forces is worse than 06. Too easy to complete, remade levels, Chaos and Shadow are there for some reason, and the fact that this used to be my favorite game for some time💀. Glad Frontiers fixed Sonic in some way.
I wouldn't say Shadow the Hedgehog is a Sonic game. It's more of a Shadow game. Going into it expecting a Sonic game is just going to make a person disappointed, but knowing that it's a Shadow game and not going into it with the same expectations for a Sonic game gives it a chance.
Yeah it was overall pretty fun but the main thing is that it’s just super underwhelming. Even both games combined it’s a pretty short game and the reward for getting chaos emeralds is like literally nothing.
@@chaomix wdym bro in episode 1 you got super sonic and that was AWESOME! at least for 2010, but episode 2 super sonic was literally useless because everytime you activated a team move it would deactivate super sonic which sucks. I would say Sonic 4 is better than Sonic 06, IF it werent for the fact that I love Sonic 06 and that I dont see it as a BAD game, I just see it as a fun experience with some terrible flaws. My biggest problem with Sonic 06 isnt the glitches, SA1 gave me a harder time tbh and i still love that game to death, but rather its the missed opportunity, so many mechanics were either scrapped or unfinished, spindash for example, completely unfinished, feels like an anvil, the shoe gems, absolutely broken. But even regarding those and many more, I still like Sonic 06, and I do find it to be more enjoyable and more lively than Sonic 4.
@@mondopatrick No I don’t mean the transformation itself. Usually in the classic games you get some kind of alternate ending or additional boss fight with the super form and in Sonic 4 it basically does nothing. The form itself is cool like usual though.
@@chaomix oh yeah true, i guess a good excuse for why the games are so lack luster is because they were originally just gonna be mobile spinoffs but they instead marketed them as Sonic 4 and put them on every platform
Sonic games were never dark and serious to begin with. This whole mindset of Sonic being serious came about with Adventure 1. Before that, Sonic games were lighthearted and fun.
I think the reason they added a run button is so that the player won't run up a wall accidentally. I personally don't have a problem with that, since it gave me more control, but maybe there could had been some other ways to work on it.
Yeah, it’s not the worst thing ever but makes things a tiny bit more complicated than they should have been. I think the best way to have implemented it would to have made it a “climb” button instead.
I Really HATE Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Sonic And The Secret Rings, Sonic 4 Episode 1 & 2, Sonic Boom & Sonic Forces. But I Absolutely LOVE Sonic Unleashed, Sonic And The Black Knight & Sonic Lost World because in my opinion these three games TRIED, like their trying something good.
My most hated sonic game has to be Forces for everything that you mentioned in the video, plus one more: Sonic '06 at least had the decency to cancel itself out of the timeline at the end of its story. Forces happened, and it's never going to un-happen.
Eh, I get ironic enjoyment from Shadow the Hedgehog. I've never played Lost World, though, mainly because I haven't owned a Nintendo console past the Wii, but Secret Rings and Forces are garbage. The only 3 Sonic games I can comfortably say are worse than 2006 is Free Riders, Sonic & The Secret Rings, and Sonic 4 (Ep.I).
fun fact: Sonic Boom was bad because Sega forced BigRedButton to put the game onto the Wii U with an engine that didn't work with the system, and also BigRedButton couldn't ask for delays because Sega decided to make it a multi-media sub franchise
I’m glad it wasn’t just me that thought sonic lost world was far too much like a Mario game and completely uninspired. Sonic forces could’ve been so much more
People consider Sonic 06 the worst because of how much of a let down it was after the two major SA bangers Sonic Team produced. Not saying Sonic 06 is that bad, but it ruined people's expectations.
I like Sonic Forces. I find it SO FUN. When I heard people saying it was bad, I wasn't happy. I do admit though, the levels are short. But I still love it. Disagree with me if you want. But I love Sonic Forces.
To be honest, saying that anything related to sonic boom has "bad writing" is probably even more controversial than saying 06 isn't the worst game; I mean, the cartoon is nothing *but* that writing, and look at how much praise IT gets.
7:03 interestingly sonic 4 was a mobile game during development. It was ported to consoles. It’s mobile game is still named in the background of the Casino levels 15:50 really? I found Forces to have the same kind of child-friendly, everyone smiles story as Lost World. It’s “edge” went unnoticed due to how cartoony it looks
It’s because of the weird direction of the newer games. I think a lot of people are realizing that although Sonic 06 is a “bad” game, it’s way more in the right direction than a lot of the recent games.
@@chaomix I feel like Forces is like the antithesis to 06. Where 06 was considered a bad game because of many smaller things subtracting from the main experience, Forces is considered a bad game because of its poor main experience despite not having many hiccups like 06
@@evdestroy5304 it could make sense. But really, i see from time to time how the entire fanbase for some reason, changes it's opinion on a certain game.
The problem with Sonic 4 is that it was supposed to be a phone game called Sonic the Portable, but SEGA decided that it would be the perfect pick for the new main entry of the 2D games. Sonic Boom was supposed to be a spinoff for all platforms, with a much bigger story, 4-player co-op, more characters (Shadow and Metal Sonic were SEGA's idea though). But SEGA decided to make it exclusive to WII U (which didn't support the engine Boom ran on) and had its script modified to fit with the TV show. Sonic Forces was supposed to be much more serious, with less jokes and more action, with longer stages and even different "duo" abilities, but SEGA decided to tie it with Sonic Mania, forcing the developers to rush the game. Moral of the story: don't trust SEGA
1: I actually unironically enjoyed Shadow TH. I'm not the best at picking up on personality traits, so the edginess went completely over my head. (also worth mentioning that being British, "damn" is nowhere near as strong as it is in the USA - we barely even consider "damn" to be swearing at all over here.) Also, anyone who says that the Sky Troops level theme isn't fire is a liar. 2: 100% agreed. Got barely a quarter of the way through, was unable to complete the level where if you break a pot you lose, gave up and only ever used the Wii again to play the Gamecube discs of SA2B and Sonic Heroes. 3: Didn't find these two to be terrible as much as "meh." Not sure what they were thinking making two of the Episode 1 levels reruns of the most hated levels of Sonic 1&2, and episode 2 was WAY too over reliant on Sonic and Tails' new "69 attack" but that's all I can really say about it. 4:Perfect summing up of Boom. Cringeworthy writing, flanderisation galore, and glitchy gameplay. 5: Nice to see Lost World mentioned. It's one of my pet hates of the Sonic series. Unintuitive and un-Soniclike gameplay, terrible "meta-era" jokes and writing, and stupid one-note villains that look like reject Pokemon. 6:To be fair to Forces, I recall hearing somewhere that it went through almost as much development hell as 06. Allegedly, it was originally planned to be much more OC-centric, but Sega demanded that more Sonic should be put into the game, and when they realised that it would be an anniversary game, Sega went back and insisted that Classic Sonic needed to be shoehorned in as well, resulting in the mess that we got.
Least favorite Sonic game I've ever played is the Game Gear version of Sonic 2. Objectively, there's more things wrong with 06 but there's also more things RIGHT with it, by virtue of it being a bigger game. S2GG is just a meh experience by default made worse with that awful screen crunch making the first boss nearly impossible. Also at least we got to play as Tails in 06!
Before you say, the Last Story from Shadow The Hedgehog leads to Shadow accepting G.U.N. at all and they accept him but also, the reason why Shadow is extremely violent in the opening is because of him trusting his father so he tells him to attack to kill while having amnesia and he uses guns to replace his Chaos Spear, everyone is wrong about the game.
Interesting to see that all but one game mentioned came out after '06, although I agree with each entry. It would be really nice to see that same effort again someday, but I have doubts we will anytime soon.
Agree on almost everything. Almost, because Sonic 4 episode 2 is miles better than 1, and yet you say it has worse physics. No it doesn't? Other than that, spot on.
Sonic 06 tries, and Sonic forces legit didn’t even try. Also I just love how dark and serious 06 is, a lot of people say it’s to much, but I kinda think it’s just right…
As much as I am the local Sonic Forces defender, the points brought up here do make sense. I still put it as my #10 best, but I can see why people didn't like it Still, below 06 depends on what you're talking about. Story: oh yeah, easily Forces was worse. Graphics: Forces takes a simple cake easily. Gameplay: i dunno personal preference i like Forces more but whatever. I don't think it deserves to be bashed on as much as it has recently for being just a mediocre game, but I can recognize where it did fall flat on its face. But thats just my opinion. Now I sit in my lounge chair waiting for all the hardcore adventure stans to raid my comments and dox me over my opinion of forces.
I might get hate for this but sonic 06 is actually my favorite sonic. Mainly cause of nostalgia but also I loved the fact that you get to play as three of the coolest hedgehogs. And I actually never got any glitches that I can remember when I played on ps3
Liking Sonic 06 is better than liking the 2010s Decade Sonic Games that aren't Mania. Only by embracing 06 & making Sega realize that it was wrong to abandon everything that game did right can this neverending feeling dark age truly end. The 2010s Decade was the worst of Sonic's Career as far as games are concerned. We can only pray for return to form to happen sometime either this year or next year for the Sonic Series.
And people still bash 06 for being "the worst game ever made". Can't they look at Sonic Blast instead or something?
@@spectre2318 bro I love sonic blast and 06
As a lifelong fan since the original, I rank the Genesis-era and Mania as the very best of the Sonic catalog but I still put Sonic 06 (despite all of the many justifiable complaints) as a palatable experience right up underneath Adventure 1 & 2, Generations, and Nights Into Dreams as Sonic Team's very best polygonal/3d titles.
How ironic that he would end up doing just that only a game later.
Imo shadow wasn't very edgelordy until you start to reach the end of the dark story other than that, shadow was for the most part a wandering soul looking for his way, I mean just play any other story in that game (more so the heroic ones)
No wonder it’s E10+
YESS
Omega would fit more because omega is already pretty violent
Shadow was never dark and brooding... he was an introvert

No, they had to mess around with Cry Engine to get it to work on Wii U (I think, sorry I only warched Splash Dash's video)
didn't the dev team literally lie to Sega about being developers for naughty dog or some shit? no sympathy.
Sonic 4 Episode 2 was literally a step up in every way though, especially the physics...

Never played Lost World but I actually like the story. (Not to be confused with the writing.) It's really the only time in the series we see conflict and trust issues between Sonic and Tails, and it shows Sonic's hastiness as a character flaw that needs to be dealt with.
Read Archie Comics Read Archie Comics They showed their devolving trust issues in a way better way then lost world
Me too
Ok tails was annoying in Lost World
As a Tails fan, this is kinda insulting actually.
I have a love-hate relationship with LW’s story. There are some good parts but some bad.
However that part where Eggman “died” was cheesy but cool
When I came here I expected you to mention games like Sonic Drift, Sonic Labyrinth, but you actually had the guts to name mainstream games
Good job
Sonic 06 was better than most 2010s Sonic Games & ironically I would rather replay Forces than Colors. At least Labyrinth, Spinball, Tails SkyPatrol, & Drift were obvious cashgrab spinoffs made on older hardware in a more primitive time for the gaming industry. That's kind of why we give the awful Sonic 1 (except the Whitehead & Jam versions) a pass.

“There’s no momentum mechanic like pretty much every game before this”
Bruh there hasn’t been a momentum mechanic since Adventure 2
Didn't really expect a full fledged fanfic in the comments, but I suppose I should have.

On top of that, considering this is a list of games worse than 06, it should be critical that comparing Shadow's character in that game to the this predecessor, it is SHOCKING how different they are in quality. That wouldn't be saying much but believe it or not, the version of Shadow from 06 is regarded by fans as the best version of the character in the entire FRANCHISE.
EXCELLENT WORK. CHAOMIX
Finally a good comment in defense of Shadow. It might have its flaws but it's definitely not worse than 06, nor as "edgy" as everyone says it is.

Also Shadow & Secret Rings haven't been Modern for some time being considered 4kids Era Games these days.
agreed
I 100% agree with all these choices, I think 06 is still a mess, but atleast it was still some what fun to play.
P-06 is even more fun
And funny With The Glitches

The only issue I have with your Forces point, Forces is far from the first game that had short stages
Hell, Colors had more stages that you can blink and theyre over
Forces like colors fits 2-8 levels into one level, making all these levels very, VERY short, they basically end before they even made it halfway.
The difference between Colors and Forces I have come to find is that while the colors levels can also end much too quickly, the level design is actually good, where as forces feels so unfulfilling to play because they level design requires minimul player input AND the levels are so short.
Sonic 4 WAS a cheap mobile attempt at a Classic Sonic game. It wasn't intended to be Sonic 4 at all.
Sorry, but Sonic 4 Episode II was way better than Episode I. Physis, momentum, level design, music, everything was much better. Idk how anyone could play both games and say Episode II was worse.
Totally

@@KillyRRwell ok 🤓 ( wahh I can't believe people say "my opinion" when talking about why they like a game)
Yes, excellently said! Totally agree.

How dare you call Shadow the Hedgehog worse than Sonic 06? That game was my childhood!
EDIT: Honestly, Sonic 4 Episode II is underrated.
Ngl you’re the first person I’ve seen say episode 2’s physics are worse than episode 1’s. I don’t see it at all tbh

I agree with this
It's only problem is the physics
0:41 Dude, Sonic 06's glitches are not the reason why that game is awful.
Right, for me, I love glitches in games cuz you can clip and break the game 😆
The only things that ruin 06 for me are the bad physics and glitches. Level design, combat, moveset, artstyle, even Silver's gameplay are really fun for me. Definitely deserves a remake, those physics really sour it for me...
@Welp your comment is also just another opinion
Sonic 06 is not only not the worst Sonic game, it's not even the worst Sonic game released *that day*. Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis released that day too.
Forces? The heck? Sure it's worse than Generations but "not as good as Generations" doesn't mean it's worse than 06.
I agree on both statements.
people just have forces for god knows what reason
Sonic ‘06 is literally the first game to make me legitimately break a controller because of glitches.
Takes game breaking glitches to a whole 'nother level.
And then there's Sonic Jam on the Tiger Gamecom.
Please don’t talk about that 😞
That's probably the worst sonic game ever made.
I was just personally offended by Sonic Forces for bringing back all these characters just to have them do *nothing*....
Let us play as Team Chaotix, or Rouge or Shadow or even Knuckles just SOMETHING. But no. Sonic or Classic Sonic. No fun allowed.

Starts bad mouthing Shadow the Hedgehog (game)
Me: ah, you've chosen death.

I like Sonic Forces. I find it SO FUN. When I heard people saying it was bad, I wasn't happy. I do admit though, the levels are short. But I still love it. Disagree with me if you want. But I love Sonic Forces.
Same bro same
It doesn’t deserve the number 1 spot at all
The spot should go to sonic boom and secret rings
AND after the controversy last year everyone now knows what "SONICS ARMS ARE BLUE!" came from
what about sonic 3d blast?
Tried to only do bigger release games. Felt it was a bit too spin-off-y.
Haven’t played 3D blast but I think it looks fun
It's very fun to play
To be honest, saying that anything related to sonic boom has "bad writing" is probably even more controversial than saying 06 isn't the worst game; I mean, the cartoon is nothing *but* that writing, and look at how much praise IT gets.
I like Secret Rings and shadow the hedgehog.
Why tho
7:03 interestingly sonic 4 was a mobile game during development. It was ported to consoles. It’s mobile game is still named in the background of the Casino levels
15:50 really? I found Forces to have the same kind of child-friendly, everyone smiles story as Lost World. It’s “edge” went unnoticed due to how cartoony it looks
Has anyone else noticed a surge in people defending sonic 06 lately? I'm very glad because I actually enjoy 06 but it's just odd.
It’s because of the weird direction of the newer games. I think a lot of people are realizing that although Sonic 06 is a “bad” game, it’s way more in the right direction than a lot of the recent games.
@@chaomix I feel like Forces is like the antithesis to 06. Where 06 was considered a bad game because of many smaller things subtracting from the main experience, Forces is considered a bad game because of its poor main experience despite not having many hiccups like 06
Mostly.. sonic's fanbase bipolarity.
Wait enough years and probably they Will say Forces was always a master piece
@@RSTLegacy No, they won't. It will be more like Shadow the Hedgehog, it'll just be remembered as "meh" and forgettable.
*cries in loving Shadow the Hedgehog 05*
but great video as usual
I think Sonic's Schoolhouse deserves an honorable mention, even if it's just a spin-off.
Not even joking, any time I play SA2 mech or treasure hunting or even speed stages I just get frustrated and bored, I hate that game.
Worst sonic games in history:
Sonic labyrinth
Sonic boom rise of lyric
Sonic 4 episode 1-2
Sonic blast
Way worse than sonic 06.
I really believe Sonic 06 isn't a bad game. I've never played it, but I didn't mind the story too too much. At least it got Shadow's character right!
Shadows character arc is so good in 06, it almost makes the entire game with it just for that.
It definitely does! If Shadow wasn't in the game, I don't think I would have liked it as much. Sorry Silver!
Yeah it’s still like that now in 2024 when I’m watching this
Interesting to see that all but one game mentioned came out after '06, although I agree with each entry.
Also I just love how dark and serious 06 is, a lot of people say it’s to much, but I kinda think it’s just right…
The only 2010s Sonic game that tried was Mania. 06 was an underrated Gem compared to the crap we got during the 2010s for the Sonic Series.
As much as I am the local Sonic Forces defender, the points brought up here do make sense. I still put it as my #10 best, but I can see why people didn't like it
Still, below 06 depends on what you're talking about.
I definitely like 06 better then Forces, but on my lost Sonic Forces is number 5….
I might get hate for this but sonic 06 is actually my favorite sonic. Mainly cause of nostalgia but also I loved the fact that you get to play as three of the coolest hedgehogs. And I actually never got any glitches that I can remember when I played on ps3
Dnt wry. Check Out Speed Super Sonic. His Favourite Sonic Game is also Sonic '06
Do people even hate on these comments anymore?

Liking Sonic 06 is better than liking the 2010s Decade Sonic Games that aren't Mania. Only by embracing 06 & making Sega realize that it was wrong to abandon everything that game did right can this neverending feeling dark age truly end. The 2010s Decade was the worst of Sonic's Career as far as games are concerned. We can only pray for return to form to happen sometime either this year or next year for the Sonic Series.
