  • The first step after designing the boat canopy is to make the frame which consists of 3x 22mm aluminium tube. I’ll be using a Rothenberger motive bender to create the angles.

    Well James, never thought we'd see you "on a bender ...." in a video. When I was fitting out our narrowboat, I'd spend a considerable amount of time watching UA-cam videos on how a job should be done. I found it better to copy someone who knows what to do rather than reinvent then wheel. But good job young man, you're a braver man than I am!!

    I recognised the look at the beginning of the vlog. That look in my house is usually accompanied with..."rub beard..pause Right...tea, Look back more beard rubbing ...time for a smoke and more tea. okay I know...UA-cam video... 15mins late ...okay more confused that ever!" But I havent bulit a NARROWBOAT!!! looking forward to you progress!! Be well and be safe!

    The editing at the beginning when you were struggling to bend it was fantastic. Glad you were able to use Will’s workshop for a bit. Once this is done it will be great extra space for the kids when the weather isn’t too cold. You are a brave and innovative man James. Great work. Hope the rest of the supplies come soon.

    Rothenburger tube benders are good kit, having served my apprenticeship many years ago as a plumber I know them well and the hydraulic ones too used for mild steel pipes. Your aluminium 22mm tube is on the limit for that type of hand bender so we'll done for achieving your first pram hood frame great work fella very impressive 👏 and your ingenuity with the lock gate acting as a support structure. You've got this beaten just stick with it there 😉

    one of his best videos, and timely, given context, etc., and very well received by certain friends, etc. [and to be sure, james seldom sees fit to prove for more than a few how "truly experienced experts" can bring home the bacon without mooting such efforts like many who should know better, etc.]

    Just seeing this Saturday morning Eastern USA time. I've done some pipe bending myself and it can be tricky. Where to start the bend and have it come out the way you want takes practice. Your minor twist should be able to be bent/twisted straight. As for increasing angle to each side, I suggest thinking about increasing the center angle, which would give a tiny bit more center height (one bend vs two). And finally, it does not seem that the bending tool is setup incorrectly. I've bent steel electrical pipe which is tougher with less effort than you are putting forth, although the bender I used slightly different.

    Pipe bending is always fun, little tip the radius is always 2.5x the diameter of the pipe to the centre of the bend or 1.5x to the inside centre from the throat of the bend on that type of bender, had a carbon steel job once, destroyed three of them alu stok benders in a day, one word cheater bar, ok maybe two

    Hi James.
    I have to admit I enjoyed watching you struggle. Is that thick walled tube, by any chance? 22mm copper can be a sod to start, too. Now you know why I gave up plumbing. 😁😁😁
    Mate, get a plumber's folding rule, or an adjustable bevel to set the angles. Measure to the back of the bend, not the start of it. You'll also need a square, or a good eye.
    I'm busy this weekend, or I'd come and give a hand / advice.
    Good luck.

    • @sarkybugger5009
      @sarkybugger5009 2 роки тому

      @@IDKline There's still a place for pulled bends in plumbing. There's less flow restriction than in a sharp 90 degree fitting, plus you can pull angles other than 90, and it's also quicker than making two joints. It's best kept out of sight, for purely aesthetic reasons.
      Mind you, copper is horrendously expensive these days, so everyone uses plastic, where they can.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt My best advice would be to watch an instruction video on pulling a double set, as that involves angles other than 90 degrees.

    Great as always...the 2 poles off the centre need to be long enough so when there is no cover on they just fall/lie down towards the back and not hit tiller. Mine aren't and have to take them off every time I move.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt

      Now that is where my head explodes. I think I’ll have to take mine off too for cruising but I’ll see once it’s all in.

    When sizing that part that you mentioned was the limiting factor, remember the fabric hem needed for the edge treatment or joining seam will need to be subtracted from the overall width.

  • @DIYGUY1-2-3
    @DIYGUY1-2-3 2 роки тому

    Hi James, watched you bending the tube, how does the tube connect into the swivels, drill and pop rivet? Don't forget the joint stitching will reduce the width of 1,5m of the canvas your putting over the roof.
    Are you buying a sewing machine?

    good video, james! exasperation did not mean you could not upload a great video! i remember disney had an animated character named goofy. he carried an old-fashioned beach chair into place, and tried for about ten minutes to open it and set it up. at the time, it was hilarious! but seriously, i want to see you get that canopy the way you want it! be sure to watch electricians do bends on youtube!

    Shame I don't live closer to you James as I have a bending machine in my back shed, which I can bend up to 50mm schedule 40 Stainless Steel tube. It in powered by air over hydraulics, plus it has a stop disc for all degrees for angle and you would have been able to use for free.
