I got to know Walt Garrison thru my job in management at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas. We had a bar/restaurant called “THE WALT GARRISON RODEO BAR”. We worked with The Mesquite Rodeo and partnered with a charity important to Walt and his Wife Debbie. His reputation was as real as his image. He drove the big duel wheel pick up, wore pressed Levi & Straus jeans and yes, he had the Skoal in his back pocket. Some years later, I took a job at a small, but established Golf and Country Club in Denton. On my first week or two as GM of the club, someone mentioned Walt had pulled up to the club in his pickup. I looked out my window, saw him, and walked out to say hi. Walking up to the truck window, he saw me, smiled only as Walt could, said “what the heck you doing here”. I explained when he said almost apologetically, “you know, I’m not really a country club guy”. I just laughed. He laughed and I would see him at the club once in awhile. What a beautiful and wonderful human. He was as he appeared. Years later, I happened to be listening the “the ticket” radio in the morning when they had Walt on following Dandy Don’s passing. Walt was very moved and choked up talking about Don Meriden. Walt and Don were roomies when Walt joined the Cowboys. Walt was a real Cowboy in every sense of the word. Men like that were and are hard to find. RIP Walt.
I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan. Don Meredith, Chuck Howley, and Bob Lilly were my very favorite Cowboys for several years. #32 was definitely added to that list later. I saw him tote the ball at the Cotton Bowl, watched him play at Texas Stadium, and watched him steer-dog at the Houston Rodeo. The NFL is obviously void of Walt Garrisons today. God bless our pro football heroes from a bygone era.🏈
@@chrisoakley5830 He competed in Steer wrestling not bull riding. Go to see him at our local rodeo back in the day. He had one of the best times that night.
I became a fan when Roger Staubach was a quarterback. Those were the days when they played because they loved it. Nowadays they play for the money. I met Charlie Waters, Calvin Hill and Bob Lilly when I was a teenager and all I could do was just think how huge they were. Miss those glory days.
Kid on my small rural high school football team was helping his father string barbed wire on a Friday afternoon after school when a sudden tug snatched it out of his hand leaving him with a deep cut across his palm. He bandaged it, finished the work then played the whole game. Farm boys are a bit tougher than the average.
Ran into Mr Garrison 2 Different times both at Wrestling Tournaments. Both times This Gentleman took the time to speak to ouWrestlers. Had a great time, thank you Mr.garrison, God bless you and yours
I remember our wrestling team was at a tournament in El Paso and I saw Walt Garrison sitting at a table I pointed him out to the Boys and told them that Walt went to LEWISVILLE HS back in the day and that he was a running back he later went to the Cowboys and played in a super bowl. Well they were not believing me so I kept telling them to go over and ask him. Finally the boys went over and asked him if he played for LHS, they told him they wrestled for LHS he said yes, one of the boys asked him if he had ever played in a Super Bowl he said “no , I played in two Super Bowls , V And V1. “ oh my it was so much fun, Walt is truly the “salt of the earth “
Can you imagine how much fun it must have been to have both Meredith and Garrison on the same team? Both were such humorous personalities. I bet they made it more enjoyable for everyone else.
Wow! Excellent video! Walt Garrison was a true Cowboy legend in every sense of the word. He was a Cowboy when the Cowboys were truly America's team. His toughness and grit is missing in today's NFL.
Meredith had a funny line about Walt. "He was 'Mr. Consistent'. If you needed 3 yards on 3rd down, Walt would get you 4. If you needed 10 yards, Walt would get you 4".
'Hi, I'm Walt Garrison and I don't smoke. But I still enjoy tabacca. Smokless tabacca like Skoal here. Just a peench between my cheek and gum gives me real tabacca pleasure. And since I don't light up, I can use it doing anything without tying up my hands. So, go smokeless with Skoal, Copenhagen or Happy Days Mint. The tabaccas you don't have to smoke to enjoy'. I used to do this routine at parties in Alaska (while drinking , of course). Walt had a mutual friend in Juneau and I missed meeting Walt when he once visited when I was out of town. Oh, well. But I do drink my morning coffee from a cup from Harvey's BBQ down there in Big D. That's where the wittlin' took place. Skoal, brothers! (Yes, that's Earl).
Man I remember that run against the Dolphins in the final quarter where dragged along about three Dolphins with him!!! I was five but I could feel what he was feeling. After all these years we are not losing this game even if I have to drag the whole team with me into the endzone.
The thing i am shocked is he's still going to strong at 78. Look at Guy Morriss, who was a center for the Eagles from 73 to 83 and then college head coach at Kentucky and Baylor. He died yesterday at 71 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2017. He most likely had CTE as well. Still with Walt with all the punishment of football, ranching, and rodeo's, I am shocked that's it didn't wear him down physically. Just sometimes there's people like Walt in this in world that can do it all and still come out fine on the other end when it comes to these physically demanding jobs.
Didn't see his playing days but I do remember the tv commercials for Skoal and he did one for a credit card where he was in a restaurant and called to the waiter.... Hey, Garson, get over here. It was hilarious.
Walt Garrison was the best name ever for a Dallas Cowboy. He was a great player in his era. I was never a huge cowboys fan but l always admired Garrisons ability and toughness.
I've commented on other videos that it's a damn shame that Garrison, Reeves, Too Tall, Harvey Martin and Charlie Waters aren't in the Cowboys' ring of honor. Just an absolute disgrace!
The Cowboys have played in 8 Super Bowls. Their leading rushers in those 8 games are: Emmitt Smith: 3 games, 70-289 yards Tony Dorsett: 2 games, 30-162 yards Walt Garrison: 2 games, 26-139 yards Duane Thomas: 2 games, 37-130 yards Robert Newhouse: 3 games, 38-114 yards Roger Staubach: 4 games, 17-83 yards
Roger was one of those mobile quarterbacks who could actually run. He was like the 70s version of Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts. Maybe not as fast as those guys but he could certainly run.
This man, Walt Garrison, was my hero when I was a kid. I played running back and like Walt, I wasn't fast, but I was quick and had good hands and caught a lot of passes. The other thing was, on short yardage situations, I was the one the coach sent in to pick up the first down. During one of those on the goal line, an opposing player speared my knee with his helmet. The hit broke my patella, but I wanted back in the game. I had no idea my knee was broken, it just hurt. Anyway, I scored a TD. That happened because of Walt Garrison's inspiration for being tough. I wanted to be as tough as my cowboy hero. On that play, I was. So, thanks Walt. Though, I've always been a sh*tty roper, I've never bulldogged a steer, and as I've gotten older my riding skills have diminished. Unless you're talking about motorcycles, LOL! 😅 Oh, and I got to wear number 32 on the JV football team, woohoo!
Thanks for the video I grew up in Lewisville and would go downtown to the skoal /Copenhagen office he had in Lewisville. Extremely Humble man and when I deployed to The Gulf War my mom would go down to Walt’s office and he would send me rolls. He is a Lewisville and Cowboys legend. Thanks
I was a little kid growing up in Lewisville back in the 1970s. I remember that my dad recalled that Walt had a Skoal office in downtown. That's pretty cool.
My favorite players as a kid. I got his autograph when I was a kid living close to where they trained. He was super nice (as they all were). I loved how he ran, how he'd get under tacklers and buck them off- it was just great. He wasn't the best fullback, in fact he was pretty small for fullback, but he was so tough and well built he could do what any other fullback could do, block, run and catch- and he was just so tough for a 205 pound fullback. Great video. PS. he was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1972. His knee injury sucked, but frankly it was about time he retired. We lost a ton of great players during and after 1974, which is why the 1975 Cowboys had so many rookies and were such a surprise to get to the Super bowl. (we lost Garrison, Hill, Morton, Hayes, Green, Toomay, Niland, Lilly, Manders, and a bunch of others. It was a bloodbath).
After spending nine years with one of the pickiest coaches in the NFL, I’d say he was pretty good. Earned two SB RINGS and retired because of an injury bull dogging.
It was 1995, a BBQ joint in Dallas, as I walked in I noticed some iconic Americans on the walls and mentioned to the man behind the counter how much I appreciated my heroes presented in his establishment. He said, ’“You like heroes, let me introduce you to some”and he walked me over to a table, there was Roger Staubach and Walt Garrison, he introduced me and after pleasantries Roger asked me where I was from. I said, “God’s country”, he said, well where is that exactly? I said, Oklahoma, the entire area lit up with laughter. He said, “how do you figure Oklahoma is God’s country”? I said, “well, I’m on the road a bunch and I call God everyday” Everyone’s interest was peaked as the entire dining area listened intensely. I said, “you can imagine a fella could run up a pretty big long distance bill each month”. Everyone was nodding yes, humoring me, I said, “well, from Oklahoma it’s a local call” and everyone in the place erupted with laughter, clapping, at the punch line. They were very gracious and thank you for jogging my memory. #BoomerSooner 😁🇺🇸
Great video, many thanks. 🙏🏼 I did ponder once the 1989 “Roadhouse” classic was released, if Sam Elliot’s character “Wade Garrett” was homage to The Legend, Walt Garrison. My Mom is from Lubbock, and any Dallas Cowboy player who has some manner of Texas roots were easily her favorites, and oh my Lord did that woman dote on ole Walt Garrison. 🍻🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸🍻
I seem to always learn something new n each episode and this one was no different. Crazy that Walt put up more yards than the great Gale Sayers. Walt running against the Dolphins in that first Super Bowl victory is forever etched in my mind. Thanks for another great episode 👍🏻👍🏻
Walt Garrison, same last name as mine was my second cousin. One of my Aunt’s through marriage had a photo album with his childhood photos. I loved Walt and he was tough. Someone once joked if you needed two yards, Garrison would give you three. If you needed 3 yards, Garrison would give you two. He was good though.
That 'someone' was Tom Landry, who also had a good sense of humor.😂 Though Landry's actual quote was "If you need three yards, Walt will get you three yards. If you need five yards, Walt will get you three yards". 😂
@@davidroman1654 You can find this quote by Googling "Steve Sabol NFL Legends Walt Garrison". The quote is: "If you need three yards, Walt'll get you three yards; if you need five yards, Walt'll get you three yards." The article also said that Don Meredith once said "Walt's slower than the steam off horse manure, but he's dependable. He always hits the right hole and never fumbles."
Redskins fan here. Walt Garrison was a great FB. Unfortunately for Garrison, my 1st Monday Night Football Game I ever went to was in 1973 where Ken Houston stopped him at the 1 yard line, which is likely why Garrison isn’t in the HoF.
Great video! I remember watching Walt play in the late 60s and giving him the nickname Garrison Gorillas after the ABC TV series by the same name. I had forgotten about his performance in the NFC title game with the 49ers where he played with a collarbone injury. Wow!
Walt Garrison used to visit the Stockyards in Fort Worth and was a patron at Cowtown USA, Filthy McNasty's and The Cadillac Club off of Exchange. My brother and I use to work the parking lots behind M.L. Leddy's and we always saved his VIP spot and watched his truck. He was a very nice guy. Dood you got some insane high quality videos!
How good was he? Better than most of us. He got a D1 scholarship and played multiple years in NFL. I think that separated him from many other would be athletes. Just like any other guy like him. They are all good.
Lol love the exchange w Chicago Bear great Dick Butkis. Butkis "if you ever come on this side of field again, ill bite yo head off!" Garrison- "if you do it'll be 1st time you had any brains up in there!" LMAO!! Now thats TUFF!!
Walt was tuff, ill never forget a monday night game with Dallas on the goal line going for the win against washington,i thought sure walt would get it in but safety Ken Huston stopped walt in his tracks an washington won it was a great game that nite no matter who one
Aaahhh! Thanks for writing that comment about that game. I saw that same game on TV and it left a lasting memory with me to this day since I didn't think anyone could stop Garrison in his tracks. PS: Prior to reading your comment I was going to write about that game-ending situation, but you wrote it with better details than I could.
@@bloqk16 Thx! Sorry about telling the story, you did a great job in I was just as surprised that night too that Walt got stopped,he really was tuff, uno I seen on u tube Walt being interviewed an them telling about his entire career from HS on,what's funny is I never was a cowboys fan,but individually they produced alot of great talent an players,an Walt was one that I was a big fan of except when he played my team's lol
Sad to hear..I was a kid in Cleveland 1960's..football card collector and huge football fan in the shadow of Browns Municiple stadium...Walt Garrison was a BIG name....Reeves and Garrison together...real men
Talk about an example of a true cowboy, rodeo and otherwise. He was one tough son-of-a-gun and is still, in my opinion, one of the greats. A tough, classy guy. God rest his soul!
Walt Garrison was a bad boy. He shared the backfield with guys like Don Perkins, Dan Reeves, Duane Thomas, and Calvin Hill, and still managed to get in good runs and receptions.
As always, a great job! Walt Garrison (Little Pudding) played football the way it was supposed to be played. Growing up in Texas I tried to play football the way Garrison did. I was a defensive tackle and fullback when I played, I picked 32 because of Garrison and due to the fact that they wouldn't let me wear #74 (Bob Lilly) at running back. I broke my collar bone in a playoff game and remembering that Garrison had played with one, so did I. I didn't tell anyone until after the game had been decided. Garrison and the Cowboys of the '60s and '70s were major influencers to my playing and coaching career!!
I met him once at OSU. I was just a freshman and he a star football player. He appeared to me to be a grounded, down to earth gentlemen who was not full of himself in the least and respected others, no matter who they were.
Thousand years ago, I used to live in Denton, TX, and Walt Garrison was one tough Mo-Fo, come on Now, wrestling Bulls and GOD knows what else, shoot, I bet he could take on Godzilla and King Kong at the same time and not even get a scratch. Being a Real Cowboy and playing for America's Team, says it All About The Man The Myth Mr. Walt Garrison. Thank You Sir.
There were two Garrison clans back in the early 1900,s. I came from one clan, Walt was from the other. My dad grew up in Denton during the depression and told me the other Garrisons were very strong and tough.
Dallas Cowboy Legend. Heard his name in my house when I was a kid in Texas . Revered by my dad with the greats like Bob Lily, T T Jones , Tony Dorset, Randy White, Hollywood Henderson.
I met Walt about 5 or 6 years ago. He was very polite and couldn't stop talking about of his grandsons that wrestled. At that time, one was in HS in Ohio and the other was on the roster at Okie State.
I went to work for a man named Dawson McAllister right after he bought the old Walt Garrison Arena in Benbrook, TX. I never met Walt, but I heard that he was in the building a few times when I was on the grounds. As many of you, I wish players today were more like the ones of old. They seemed to have better attitudes and personalities.
Cool 👍🏼, I seen him play for the cowboys, but was going out & a player named Robert Newhouse was coming in. And he retired I remember the TV commercials. Sometimes today’s people forget about great players in sports. Thanks
@@misterresister8271 It might have been Don Meredith. He had some funny things to say about other players especially Pete Gent. Quotes often get credited to the wrong person.
Though not my original inspiration 4 the #32 (that honor belongs 2 the LA Lakers' Magic Johnson), Walt Garrison gave #32 SO MUCH CREDIBILITY W/ME bc HE PLAYED 4 THE DALLAS COWBOYS & certainly was 1 helluva player. When I think of Walt Garrison; I think of "goal-line stands" then his Skoal commercials.
Great video Logical Cowboy, I remember hearing that story of a horse trailer, 😆 how times have changed. I still don’t know how you can rodeo & play pro football? Garrison had to be one of those people Issac Hays sung about in his song “Theme From Shaft” A Bad Mutha! 😮
Starting out as a linebacker explains a lot. When he ran you got the impression that he wasn't out to avoid you. Like he would "prefer" to run over you. Its like a 4 wheeler mentality. "Oh, I think I can roll over that." "Eww, look a speed bump!" Ahhhh. When football was football. Like rugby with gear.
Watched him play for his whole career. They always said he was not fast, yet you see him blow passed people and seldom caught from behind. He hit the hole as quick as anyone. While I agree he did not possess blazing speed, he was far from slow. And there was no lack of power. Many of his highlights show him pulling several players at one time. Just a good old boy.
Someone asked Walt once if he had ever seen Landry smile, and he said no, but he`s only been here nine years.
Walt Garrison has always been one of my favorite Dallas Cowboys. He's certainly much more admirable than some of the trash they have playing today.

Someone once joked if you needed two yards, Garrison would give you three. If you needed 3 yards, Garrison would give you two. He was good though.
Wow! Thanks for watching
That 'someone' was Tom Landry, who also had a good sense of humor.😂
Though Landry's actual quote was "If you need three yards, Walt will get you three yards. If you need five yards, Walt will get you three yards". 😂
@@stewartmillen7708 Always heard it was Don -"If you need 1 yard Walt will get you 1 yard, if you need 3 yards Walt will get you 1"
@@davidroman1654 You can find this quote by Googling "Steve Sabol NFL Legends Walt Garrison". The quote is:
"If you need three yards, Walt'll get you three yards; if you need five yards, Walt'll get you three yards."
The article also said that Don Meredith once said "Walt's slower than the steam off horse manure, but he's dependable. He always hits the right hole and never fumbles."
I loved the cowboys of that era. Walt Garrison was one of my favorites. RIP Puddin.
Redskins fan here. Walt Garrison was a great FB. Unfortunately for Garrison, my 1st Monday Night Football Game I ever went to was in 1973 where Ken Houston stopped him at the 1 yard line, which is likely why Garrison isn’t in the HoF.
Thank you for this. What a rough dude. We'll see if we have any real Cowboys on Sunday night. I think LVE is gonna show out.
Thanks bro! I hope you're right about LVE!
Great video! I remember watching Walt play in the late 60s and giving him the nickname Garrison Gorillas after the ABC TV series by the same name. I had forgotten about his performance in the NFC title game with the 49ers where he played with a collarbone injury. Wow!
Thanks for watching! Garrison Gorillas! I love it! 😂
He played for the OSU cowboys and Dallas Cowboys abs he was a Cowboy.!
Cowboy fan since 1966. Love your videos. Those were my Cowboys, loved them, heartbreak and ecstacy. Just subscribed. Thanks!
Welcome to the channel!
You do such a great job on your channel….. God bless and thanks.
Thanks!! God bless you too.
Thanks bro! 🙏
I remember the famous shot where he bit his tongue. A real Cowboy
I’m from the good old days too. Walt Garrison was my favorite. The horse trailer bonus was great.
How good was he? Better than most of us. He got a D1 scholarship and played multiple years in NFL. I think that separated him from many other would be athletes. Just like any other guy like him. They are all good.
We honored Walt at last home football game at Oklahoma State University. A real legend. GO POKES!!
Good job narrating
Thanks!!
I watched him as a kid in the 70s, even though I didn't like the cowboys, I liked Garrison and thought he was an exceptional and tough player.
Loved watching him play!!! Meet him at a rodeo in Shreveport LA.
Anybody out there go to Skyview elementary when the cowboys practice field was at forest and abrams and walt garrison lived in the neighborhood?
I still remember those Skoal commercials he did back when i was just a kid (born in '67). "I'm Walt Garrison and I don't smoke".
Lol love the exchange w Chicago Bear great Dick Butkis. Butkis "if you ever come on this side of field again, ill bite yo head off!"
Garrison- "if you do it'll be 1st time you had any brains up in there!" LMAO!! Now thats TUFF!!
🤣 😂
RIP Walt Garrison. My favorite Dallas Cowboy player of all time. And there will not be another like him. Ever.
and NOMO cowboys in dallassas
Sad to hear..I was a kid in Cleveland 1960's..football card collector and huge football fan in the shadow of Browns Municiple stadium...Walt Garrison was a BIG name....Reeves and Garrison together...real men
I'm glad I found your channel!!
Real Cowboy life style. Who like playing. Football with the. Dallas Cowboys. Good running back and Super Bowl Ring
Wow!! Great video!!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
Walt took a photo with us in boy scout troop 1240 in Mesquite Texas..wish i still had that photo.
Wow
Great tribute to a truly tough man. More than once Walt was hurt, Landry said "Walt is out" and Garrison said "No, I'll play."
And I hate the Cowboys.
I hate the Cowboys but Cantruly say Walt was a true Cowboy RIP Mr Cowboy😊
another awesome video thanks for posting it
Thanks for watching 🙏
I went to work for a man named Dawson McAllister right after he bought the old Walt Garrison Arena in Benbrook, TX. I never met Walt, but I heard that he was in the building a few times when I was on the grounds. As many of you, I wish players today were more like the ones of old. They seemed to have better attitudes and personalities.
Cool 👍🏼, I seen him play for the cowboys, but was going out & a player named Robert Newhouse was coming in. And he retired I remember the TV commercials. Sometimes today’s people forget about great players in sports. Thanks
Rest in peace Mr. Garrison, job well done.
You will be miss cowboy. R.i.p
R.I.P
I have an autographed picture from Walt Garrison in a blue jersey it was a game at the Cardinals , he also signed it Super Bowl VI Champions
Walt Garrison R.I.P
RIP
WALY GARRISON ONE TOUGH HARD RUNNING PLAYER ALWAYS GAVE IT HIS ALL
Thanks again...
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
"If you needed three yards, he would get you three yards. If you needed six yards, he would get you three yards." - Tom Landry on Walt Garrison.
I think that was Don Meredith...either way, funny
Don Meredith. It was 5 yards. If it was 3rd and 20, he would get you 5yards.
@@misterresister8271 It might have been Don Meredith. He had some funny things to say about other players especially Pete Gent. Quotes often get credited to the wrong person.
One of my favorite Cowboys players. If you haven't read his book, "Once a Cowboy," you should.
A real life, genuine badass. And great football player.
RIP Walt! You will be missed!
RIP
Great video Logical Cowboy, I remember hearing that story of a horse trailer, 😆 how times have changed. I still don’t know how you can rodeo & play pro football? Garrison had to be one of those people Issac Hays sung about in his song “Theme From Shaft” A Bad Mutha! 😮
Thanks bro! I agree! That was crazy!
Fantastic, thanks
Thank you too!
The truest of cowboys
Facts!
A True Cowboy 100% for Dallas Texas! Those were the real 🏈 Daze!
True Texas Cowboy on and off the field. Should be in the dallas cowboy ring of honor
I was not a Dallas Cowboy fan, but I liked Walt Garrison!
