If any of you people actually paid attention you'd get that she stated in the very beginning of the video that it's an explanation of "MEDIA THEORY" through the concept of "cultural hegemony". The only part of this theory that involved the "cultural hegemony" was the wooden spoon, which is what stirs in the radical element into society in attempt to make it disappear, diluting its power. The title of this video should have been "Media Theory through the concept of Cultural Hegemony".
The video is titled "Cultural Hegemony by Antonio Gramsci". I recommend looking at his writing. And at the very end she says, "That's cultural hegemony". I'm just trying to combat your radical point of view, like the wooden spoon and the milk. UA-cam is the glass, and the the whiteboard in the background is to make her seem more intelligent... Hows that for ambiguity?
This is more of an explanation of 'Transformismo' then Gramsci's notion of Hegemony (rather, one of the three modes of hegemony as explicated by Anderson). It also seems weird to call him a political scientist. He was a revolutionary, a journalist, and then a, above all else, a theorist. As a graduate student doing work on Gramsci I would advise anyone who thinks they got what 'cultural hegemony' is out of this video to head down to the library and be ready to read a lot.
Cultural hegemony is a term developed by Antonio Gramsci, activist, and founder of the Italian Communist party. The dominant idea at the time amongst Marxist radicals like himself was that in order to attain power you needed to seize the means of production and administration , take over the factories and the state..Gramsci realized that in order to create and maintain a new society, you also needed to create and maintain a new consciousness . CULTURAL MARXISM. He was all about POWER
The lady should get an award for her story telling nonetheless, I appreciated the foray into visual analogy--great delivery even if it's providing misleading content as the comments are suggesting. To the video creator(s): are you familiar with David Gauntlett from the University of Westminster? He's got a lot of interesting stuff on media and identity theory--might make for worthwhile collaboration in the future.
@ExWizard Word, this isn't anywhere close. I would suggest looking up any videos by Peter Thomas on Gramsci and hegemony to get an idea of Gramsci's thought on culture, hegemony and philosophy. Also, I wouldn't call him a political scientist either, he was most consistently a philosopher of revolutionary socialism.
@ExWizard you are so right (this coming from a fellow grad student as well)! Unfortunately, Gramsci's work is not so easy to read. For someone just welcoming themselves to the conversation of Gramsci, you would be better off reading another person's review of hegemony. Might I recommend Chantal Mouffe "Hegemony and Ideology in Gramsci" in Gramsci and Marxist Theory 1979.
can you explain to me in one paragraph what Gramsci's Hegemony is? I'm having trouble understanding, but I really want to apply it to the media industry rather than politics
basically, the rich control thought in a capitalist society by using their money and influence to pump out media which is favorable to the ideas of individualism, liberalism(think Adam Smith, not US Democrats), and imperialism. They have a monopoly on culture and the arts
@ExWizard just curious if you have ever stumbled across the work of Subcomandante Marcos and his work in Mexico. He, and a lot of other Mexicans, is said to be influenced by Gramsci. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@ExWizard Well, Gramsci's tought is included in most Political Science university courses, therefore, we can consider "il nostro geniale compagno" as a political scientist. Anyway, Gtamsci spent his life in the effort of turning the milk red, not pink!
Yeah, I know what you mean. My doctor said I needed heart medication, but I knew he was just trying to swindle me when he couldn't even explain what "cardiac dysrhythmia" meant in 250 characters, much less the biochemical functions of beta blockers.
Yes I am a horrible and impatient speller...I try to make up for it with the fluidity and mass of my words..:)..it seldom works. Thankyou for the correction..!
The fascists tried to wipe out Gramsci and his work - and now we have you to ridicule him? What makes you think you would succeed were the fascists failed? BTW, what's the matter, did other students bother you in university with Gramsci, while you were fixated on your personal career, for your own egoistic gain?
Why s there a perfectly helpful Spanish video on this subject and is this English video utter bullshit. One would almost assume that the Hispanophone world is culturally hegemonic.
@ExWizard Don't forget a piece of crap, Oh I mean a Marxist, and a Prisoner. If a concept cannot be easily understood than it is ussually foolishness or there is simply not enough info to understand the concept. Can you please tell me in 250 characters what Cultural Hedegmony is, all i have is the Patrick Buchannan version..:) Give me the short version, I could not stand to read Gramsci..or Marcusa:) I would then have to gouge my eyes out an mail them to Sardinia.:) DTT Thank you!
This is stupid! I hope no lecturer is explaining it the way she does :((( I agree with ExWizard..instead of watching it people go to libraries.. or check online there are numerous proper sources to learn about 'cultural hegemony' or any other concept..
But then again, the term cultural hegemony can be interpreted differently. My last comment could be considered a form of cultural hegemony, but I feel it was significantly more intelligent than this video.. and this is for a degree? yikes.
The problem is not the punk rock itself its the radical and dangerous revolutionary ideas of comunism/socialism which was in all this things... as for pornography its a different case. Pornography in a private ambient is not the problem. But leftist strategy is to bring pornography into public appreciation including even pedophilia, zoophilia, incest and so on. Since Angels book "The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State" due to the failure of the economic thought of the left their aim is to destroy traditional religious beliefs and family model of Judeo-Christian civilization.
"It is WHITE, it is CLEAN, it is GOOD FOR YOU!" Jeehhhh!

If I could ever think of reality TV as radical I could agree with you.

It also explains the Franfurt school into American culture.
A very good analogy. It only took a very small amount of food coloring to radically change everything else. That is what cultural marxism has done.
Fun fact : he was albania
Holy shit what a misrepresentation of Antonio Gramsci.
thebroodian it is almost the complete opposite
that's a great videos.... thanks there
You are amazing madam.precise and just perfect!Thank you, hugs

When i seen a video trying to explain hegemony in two and a half minutes i know it'd be a off. This takes the biscuit though.
@ExWizard just curious if you have ever stumbled across the work of Subcomandante Marcos and his work in Mexico. He, and a lot of other Mexicans, is said to be influenced by Gramsci. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Ah, yes...well, as Aunt Augusta said, "Never speak disrespectfully of Society, Algernon. Only people who can't get into it do that."
If searched on Antonio Gramsci., move on :(
@ExWizard
Well, Gramsci's tought is included in most Political Science university courses, therefore, we can consider "il nostro geniale compagno" as a political scientist.

cringe worthy
iain sutherland she is not wrong tho
Yeah, I know what you mean. My doctor said I needed heart medication, but I knew he was just trying to swindle me when he couldn't even explain what "cardiac dysrhythmia" meant in 250 characters, much less the biochemical functions of beta blockers.

No, it's strawberry milk
shes explaining the conservative concern of hegemony not the liberal side.
oh now i get it... u r explaining cultural hegemony to kindergarten kids !!
So hegemony creates homogenised milk. Or milkshake.
It's obvious this girl spends more time in a kitchen than in any intellectual arena.
Clever
This is rather the process of containmenet between mainstream culture and subculture ! i don't see where hegemony is round here ??
Garbage video. That isn't cultural hegemony, that is milk, a glass, a food colouring being stirred. Her metaphors for each aren't even good.
@ExWizard
Yeah, political scientist indeed sound weird, it implies he studied political science which he did not. Political theorist sounds better.
That was really interesting.
@ExWizard Hooray!!
LOL! This lady did not explain Gramsci's Theory! She's a Capitalist robot! lol!
tha fck
pop??
good analogy but funny
funny but good analogy
it is white?
The fascists tried to wipe out Gramsci and his work - and now we have you to ridicule him? What makes you think you would succeed were the fascists failed?
BTW, what's the matter, did other students bother you in university with Gramsci, while you were fixated on your personal career, for your own egoistic gain?
uhhhh... who else got scared....
Well......I learned nothing from that.
are you serious??

like dylan said I ain't sayin you treated me unkind You coulda done better but I don't mind You just kinda wasted my precious time
What the hell? That's 'NOT' cultural hegemony.
This is stupid! I hope no lecturer is explaining it the way she does :(((
I agree with ExWizard..instead of watching it people go to libraries.. or check online there are numerous proper sources to learn about 'cultural hegemony' or any other concept..
Too much eye contact and soft speaking
This has got to be a joke. Not even close to what Gramsci describes as hegemony.
We are fucked
But then again, the term cultural hegemony can be interpreted differently. My last comment could be considered a form of cultural hegemony, but I feel it was significantly more intelligent than this video.. and this is for a degree? yikes.
This is not an example of cultural hegemony.
👍
this is great lol
This isn't cultural hegemony.
Am I seriously hearing an explanation of cultural hegemony that sounds more like a conservative's take on society and culture? Fail.
What a hegemonic perpetuation of populist beliefs. PUNK? Did it ever occur to you Gramchi would be punk himself today?
The problem is not the punk rock itself its the radical and dangerous revolutionary ideas of comunism/socialism which was in all this things... as for pornography its a different case. לא בוצע בהכרה מלאה
This is a terrible explanation of hegemony.
wtf
wow i cant believe how wrong you got it lol
FREAK!!!!
