Alright, geek-out time. If you remove Kaigaku's use of actual lightning, you can actually get a very good look at how each move might work for a human swordsman. After thinking about it, I think each form builds a little on principles learned in the last. Form 2 most likely involves taking the sheer forward speed of Form 1 and condensing it down into 5 slashes, each moving the user forward to keep an opponent knocked off balance.
Form 3 I would say takes the speed of Form 1 and the control of Form 2 to allow a user to attack an opponent from every angle imaginable, or at least change the angle of attack very fast.
Form 4 takes the principles of Form 3 and has the user striker in multiple different directions on the go (so more or less crowd control if one should encounter multiple demons, or a demon that can attack from multiple angles at once.)
Form 5 is pretty simple, it takes the control and speed a user has learned up to this point (along with the general swordsmanship) and has a user redirect it into their sword for a powerful upward slash. The difference between this and Flame Breathing Second Form is that I believe Thunder Breathing Form 5 moves the user forward, then attacks rather than being completely stationary.
Form 6 is the sum of everything learned from the previous 5 forms. Powerful, insanely fast forward strikes that then let the user zoop away out of danger.

By the way, in the manga it is explained that, in effect, the swords do not produce fire or water, what happens is that the swordsman, when executing the techniques, gives that sensation and visual illusion that the the elements come out of his sword

Theory: I think kaigaku could not learn the first from because in this form you run towards the enemy/danger without caring for consequences and he could not do it because of his personality of fighting while keeping himself at a safe distance(hence the other forms). This trait also shows why he left the corps to become a demon. On the other hand, zenitsu runs towards the danger to save people without caring of consequences that's why its the only form he can do.

Kokushibo had such a powerful aura Tokito couldn’t even unsheathe his sword, it’s not a stretch to say that it’s just the brother feeling a totally different vibe (like what the tongue demon said) or being intimidated. Again, all the electric effects he’s reacting to and the force that blew away the small spiders was anime exclusive, in the manga it was much less clear.
What difference I've noticed with 1st and 7th form is that in 1st form Zenitsu's nichirin blade is sheathed after his attack whereas with 7th he doesn't sheath
That and he is moving so fast with the 7th form that his clothes catch fire from his fast he is moving
I’ve said this multiple times, but I still believe that the elements infused with their techniques are there, as someone else stated, akaza had burn marks after being attacked by rengoku, to me, the breathing styles having the elements in their name doesn’t make sense if they’re not real
U will find people who agree or disagree with you, but in reality it's all up to the reader or watche if they want to perceive the elements as real or fake

It may be limited magic but what if the movements are the activations and the much nichirin sword is the channeler. And they can have magic marks, paranormal beings, literal demons but somehow the author can’t allow limited magic? Physical close range magic is already well depicted in anime as well as supernatural swordsman- I just don’t understand
How i like to interpret thunder breathing's forms.
1- a simple dash and slash to finish off an enemy quickly, focusing power into your legs and performing a quick draw slash
2- channeling the power into your arms instead of your legs to perform 5 powerful slashes that surround you while standing stationary
3- combining the first 2 forms to dash around your enemy while slashing multiple times, adding in flips and spins to enforce your slashes
4- a sort've extension and upgrade of the 2nd form where you stand stationary and send out long range bolts of lightning around you
5- a refinement of the 4th form where instead of multiple bolts you send out a single powerful slash that burns the enemy
6- a fusion of all the previous forms, jumping into the air, spinning and sending out lightning in multiple directions at once
7- the ultimate evolution of the 1st form, taking everything zenitsu's learned and applying it to a single powerful attack that takes influence from his best friends Tanjiro(the flaming, and God part of the name) and inosuke(the Beastial dragon esque creature he creates from the attack).
As far as I understood form 2-6 actually are used while u do form 1 btw. He and zeni were both called incompetent cuz one could just use form 1 while the other hust could use the others. Him becoming a demon allowed him to make the other forms usable without form one.

thunder style users cant actually shoot lightning, so i think form 4 is like form 1 sixfold with a much longer range, and kaigaku used multiple bolts just because he could, or maybe not and it is like sixfold. 5 is where you do kind of what tanjiro was trying to do in the daki fight where you raise your body temperature with an explosive spontaneus 0-100 type of movement and you use the heat from your body to burn the enemy. form 6 is i think what you said except without the lightning and is only really supposed to be used when surrounded or going against someone like daki. i think thunder breathing in all is about surprising your enemy with speed, thhen constantly topping that speed until they leave themselves open for a fatal attack.
Breath of Thunder is based on Iaido (Art of Quickdraw) similar to Vergil or Kenshin Himura.
And all Breath of Thunder Forms is said to be just variants of the 1st form, Thunderclap and Flash (kinda uncreative, like how the Naruto-Verse Katon/Fire Release are just variants of the Fire Ball Jutsu)

They're not producing flames, or water, their movements mimic that of flames and water. Even Tengen is amazed at Rengoku's swordsmanship that mimics flames. Giyu's water breathing mimics water being calm and constantly flowing.

You always say that each breath user visualizes themself manipulating their element. I would argue that for some of them, or for specific forms of some of them, they actually visualize themself becoming the element rather than creating or controlling it.

the thing is, the breathing techniques in general clearly grants you supernatural abilities that can be associated with the element. For example Zenitsu vs spider demon, the demon pointed out that the air was vibrating. Something that can happen when lightning is about to strike.

The only one that makes me question the element thing is zenitsu and the lightning. Man dodged in mid air against daki with nothing to stand on which is questionable. On top of the fact that when he used god speed he is turning and such without anything to stand on as well. Personally I like to imagine them as real just to enhance my experience but am well aware the author said they weren't. Whatever makes you enjoy the story more is my opinion

In the manga I’m pretty sure Zenitsu is just pushing her across the rooftops really fast. The anime exaggerates a lot for spectacle and “rule of cool”

i wish these forms are more unique, as one could have been a move that enhances speed, or like a flashbang, or something that could turn a whole water source into a electrified substance, or a move that summons lightning strikes on the desired area, or a ground shock of lightning, or a move that launches into the air, and ends with a strike to the ground
Lightning breath does enhance speed tho.
Just that they can move fast and have superhuman strength but they aren't demons so they don't have such magic
The problem with that is that none of the attacks are actually lightning, so most of the moves you listed step into mystical territory
On what I learned is
Forms 1 and 7 resembles how thunder and lighting is fast and powerful
Forms 2-6 resembles how on top of form 1, lighting and thunder is indiscriminate. Lighting will electrify anything that it can electrify.
Eh, I'm 50/50 on the visual effects part. How did the spiders get blown back by zenitsu with lightning then? and how did the air vibrate? and when akaza attacked rengoku he used a fire shield without moving his actual sword, he blocked the attacks with the flame shield. However the author said it isn't real, it really doesn't make sense she keeps contradicting herself
I believe they just move in a way to mimic the elements( being so fast that he causes tremors, or the fire swing being so wide that it mimics a big flame) and can replicate the elements to a degree.

In a world where there are demons who can pretty much do magic and demon slayers who can heal wounds by breathing, I think the breath styles do summon up the elements but very quickly that it goes away right after ( can’t summon a whole river with the water breath) but the visual definetely lingers. Also with thunder breath zenitsu pretty much goes speed of sound, that itself is inhumanly possible so it’s safe to say it’s not all visual. And rengoku burning akaza the fire was there but should b only for a second.

I feel like the the only person who might have elemental power my be zenitsu. the other ones are just representations of how their techniques moves, but you can’t tell me the spider demon just felt that shockwave right before zenitsu went off because of charisma or something mental like that.
Don't forget Tanjiro's Sun Breathing. When Ta juro cut Daki's Obis she said that it felt like a burn, also she said that she couldn't regenerate them very well

Yeah some people believe this theory lol when nothing in manga confirm it, even tanjiro hear thunder sound from zenitsu attack. Hows that possible if there is no thunder, and how the f 7th form flaming thunder god is possible without the actual thunder. and i think its make sense when human can summon elements when demon can make an overpower blood art.

The elements are in fact real. There are times when the generated effects alter the world around them. Burn marks from fire breathing, and the waterfall basin against the horned demon actually cut where the blade was not. So regardless on whether or not the forms were enhanced by a blood demon art, there is some reality to the effects.

Thank you! I hate this whole argument. Like think about regardless of what the author said. There’s been many many times when the powers were actually used and it’s not just affects. Zenitsu using god speed is something not a normal human can do. He used Lightning to do that. But the author wants to say no? Like it’s just not adding up.
I also just find it funny how they want to stop at visual affects…when there’s literal demons who are immortal, have incredible power and healing abilities and on top of that ALSO have their own unique powers. But the good guys don’t have any? Like bro it just doesn’t add up like at all.

it's confirmed they are not summoning any element or beings, if you notice akaza or the demons do not get burned while fighting rengoku, i think they exploded for the strenght of rengoku (wich surprised mf akaza), as for zenitsu we know for a fact other people can hear thunder and feel air vibrating when he uses his technique but the electricity is not there, the spider demon says "the air is vibrating" not "holy shit he just summoned a fucking lightning"

The ghost proves that demons in demon Slayer are actually demons and they have blood arts due to the spirit plant that gave muzan his powers in Japanese mythology the plant has a connection between the physical and spiritual world allowing the dead to follow it so they may find peace so that would explain why muzan has his powers
And since demons have connection to the spirit world might explain why he was able to see rengoku spirit either that or he's able to see auras or something
The elements I'm not fully sure on but I'll go with they don't exist the sound for thunder breathing comes from the legs hitting the ground at a fast and hard pace I even tried it in real life

If the elements aren’t there how have there been instances where characters have heard lighting, seen mist, seen fire.
While they are using breathing techniques they mimic their respective element its proven those elements don't exist since UM5 said while fighting Muichiros 7th form "It's as if there is mist" proving those elements aren't real since Muichiro literally creates mist with every attack

tbh i like the concept of element being only for the visual effect, kinda make me amazed that a normal human can beat a demon just by training swords and maintain your breathing is really interesting, meaning that if you got cut by a thunder user it will feel like getting struck by a lightning while if you're attacked by a fire user it'll feel like getting burn but the effects are just visual effects for the audience. really interesting i would like to see an example of demon slayer fighting scene without the effects i wonder how would it look in the eyes of the human in that world

People seem to misunderstand what the author said. She said that the breathing styles still FEEL and LOOK as though the elements are there, but aren't exactly "real", just imitations. So it'd be some kind of energy.

actually i believe that the names of breathing come from which element the movements are most comparable to like thunder breathing got its name from how fast the user is moving and water is really quick maneuvering and slashes, wind is twisting slashes like the wind, sound is the user listening to the sound the opponent immits to figure out the attacking pattern and flame is rough slashes coming from a lot of directions at once
It is true that all that water fire and thunder are all visual effects.ot can also be seen in the anime series as no one except the user can say the difference in breathing forms and deamons usually only see the difference in breathing and combact skill

2nd form, rice spirit
The user releases 5 slashes in multiple directions (still the same)
3rd form, thunder swarm
The user swarms his enemies and slashes numerous times (still the same)
4th form, distant thunder
The user dashes super fast to create afterimages to confuse his enemies so he can slash theyre neck
5th form, heat lightning
The user dashes at the enemy and thrust there sword
6th form, rumble n flash
The user dashes in a zigzag pattern to confuse the enemy and releases 10 slashes at the enemies weak point to stun them

I kinda agree that their trash, but since every move really is focused on speed, i doubt zenitsu can't do the other forms, cause in the entertainment arc, when he was falling and then daki surounded him with belts, he cuts them multiple times in a instant

I have an idea of how these would work for a human
2nd form applies pressure from the users feet and applies it to the ground below and then the user preforms a strong slash
3rd form the user moves at blinding speeds to slash multiple targets in an instant from the back used to disarm rather than decapatate
4th form the user leaps up and crashes down with a sword strike resembling and sounding like thunder
5th form the user dashes in front of the opponent and uses a stab attack
6th form the user leaps above the target and releases a barrage of slashes masking a hidden decapitation blow resembling lightning strikes coming down from above
I know the author said there are no elements coming out but for example Rengoku Vs Akaza when Akaza does Air Type and Rengoku uses 4th form you can see Akaza Air type hitting the flames MULTIPLE times and thats what covers Rengoku. If the flames are not there then all the extra bullets would be hitting Rengoku where his sword is not pointing at anymore and when you see where his sword is pointing at and where the Air Type is still hitting. Yeah that is a lot of opening spots but nope the flames are blocking the extra strikes. So I feel like the Author is contradicting themselves a lot or forgot what they said like how Akira Toriama for DBZ claims he forgets ALOT of what he says and thats why he usually does something out of canon statements.

The Nichirin blade actually seared the demon flesh(using the sun) so it possible to leave a burn mark on a demon when attack in a fury, provided all hits are solid

I feel like the elements they have are actually there, they just don't do anything. It's like a sword can identify the user as it does with the color, and when a user does some breathing forms it give off the energy that creates a feel of it being actually there.

Everyone is saying the elements aren’t real but how do you explain giyu’s 11th form or rengoku’s fourth form? The water blocks enemies attacks for giyu and the flames protect rengoku from akaza’s air type otherwise giyu is just standing still and would get chopped by rui’s webs and rengoku would get battered by the shockwaves

1 tanjiro didn't cut the demons neck with constant Flux go re-watch and you will see he cut the demons head with the last peace left of his broken blade that had nezaku blood on it .
2 zenitzu is practically a sleep when he uses his technique so most likely he feel like he is flying in the air but to others he just blitzes people because the spider demon he used six fold on only commented on the sound that was coming from the technique the demon didn't see any lightning because there was no lightning. If zenitzu was really air hopping than someone like inosuke would call it out as well .
3 tanjiro uses a string on his blade for one of his water technique to get a clean head cut .
4 the air attack didn't clash with the fire if you look again they all hit the spot where rengoku moved his sword rengoku moved his sword in a circle and the air attack hit the circle area non of them went in the dead center.
