    Hi Russell,I'm absolutely chuffed that not only have you pulled off th job, but by the sound of it, you've done a spanking job of it too! You must take some credit mate,cos rebuilding 6 potters is certainly not a piece of piss, I've seen many guys make a right arse of it and end up with one or more jamming permanently because they mix the pistons up between the holes... congratulations on a job well done mate, and now you've done it it makes you view workshops differently with their daft bills!

    Whenever I have something to do on my bike, Delboys is my first search. I love the way you take the time to explain the reasoning behind whatever it is we're repairing. I just did the rear brakes on my 99 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad. So far they work fine, but I had no idea to check the angle of the seal to install them right side up. I didn't know there was a right side up. Tomorrow I'm rebuilding my front brakes (dual, left and right calipers), and I'll be sure to check that along with everything else. Anyways, thanks for your videos. As I said, I watch yours first!

    These are the best motorcycle videos on UA-cam by far. I've watched a couple of others as I knew there was something about the seal placement and you covered it PERFECTLY! Thanks heaps again mate.

    What a vid! I love a bit of mechanical common sense. How many people take off there calipers and then try and pull the pistons out on the bench. Using the brake lever and some opposite resistance is genius. Top top vid. I have this job to look forward to.

    I think your teaching is awesome. You explain things so simply and with a calm attitude without being condescending it makes a novice or slightly above novice to moderate mechanic feel comfortable. When you don't do something all the time or frequently it's reassuring to find knowledge like you have shared to help with the job. Knowledge is power and the key to more beer. Keep up the good.work and teaching.

    Hi mate, you can take them off at the same time, it doesn't really matter, but just be sure not to confuse the pistons and mix them up, they must go back in their same holes..they wear according to their sleeve and if you get them mixed up they can bind...good luck with it, let us know how you get on, Cheers Del

    Yeah I've watched several other "How to's" on caliper rebuilds. You are the first to mention the correct orientation of that bottom seal. Well done.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 років тому

      Thanks buddy, not all bikes have that style, these days the seals themselves are square and it's the seal recess that is machined with a slight angle to poke the bottom edge of the seal out, so just check once you pop it in that the lip is on the inside!

    Brilliant, learnt how to bleed brakes through these videos. About to rebuild a set of Nissins 4 pots to replace the tokico 6 pots on my zx7r so this is really useful. Was always worried about putting the pressure seal in the wrong way so its great to hear a video with clear information

    Great tutorial, I pull the brake lever all the way to the handlebar and tie it there with a piece of wire or zip tie etc. before I disconnect the banjo bolt, that will stop the fluid from draining out of the master cylinder. Fluid can still drain from the brake line though and securing it up like you did with the bungee will help prevent that.
    Keep them coming Del....

  • @CulturalAdventurer
    @CulturalAdventurer 11 років тому

    This vid inspired me and my mate to clean up his callipers and change the fluid. We were all good until we tried to get pressure back in the lever. After several tense hours we finally used a syringe to push fluid up into the system and shift the air out. The feeling was great when we finally had it all working again! Thanks for the vids, they're great.

Good video work, and I like that you demonstrated all the details and _WHY_ things are the way they are, it really helps me keep these things in mind as I rebuild my calipers. I was considering having somebody else do it but once I watched your video I realized it's much simpler than I had initially thought. Ordered a seal kit and I'll be doing this when they come in. Thanks mate, so glad we could help, but I like to think the benefit is more than money, you've learned to do things you dind't know, and developed your skills , which will last you a lifetime, so you are not just saving money today, you will still be using these skills in 20yrs time, so pass them on whenever you get a chance and spread that benefit to others, cos isn't that what being a biker is all about?!!

      I totally agree but for now im chuffed that i actualy did those things myself, and suprised that i was able to, and it is not difficult just takes some organisation and push/inspiration that you provided. well I just finished putting my calipers together after a full strip and clean I used metal polish to on the pistons to make them like new, I can not believe the difference now with the bike its a zx6r j1 the travel on the leaver was massive before and now after the strip and clean its rock solid and perfect. All the pistons moving together at the same time its lush. Cheers Del you give me the confidence to do a job that i thought was too difficult its a piece of piss really!!

    Great video,I'm rebuilding roadliner front brake calipers. Very similar 4 piston setup, but
    caliper doesn't split in half. I finally got all 4 pistons out with air pressure, I got all the
    seals out, looking at the last one out, I realized that the inside ones are tapered. Your
    video was a big help. for putting in the first seals the right way. THANKS for pointing me
    in the right direction!

    I did this job to the Brembos on my Mille today using nothing but your videos for instruction. That should say a lot about how confidence inspiring your instruction is. The whole thing couldn't have gone better! Roll on the 6 pots rebuild on my GSX. I also changed my chain and sprockets today and that was another first for me! PS I had to order the seals from KTM as the Brembos are the same ones they use on the Superduke!

    Hey Del
    Just thought I'd post to say that thanks to you and this video I managed to replace the seals on the front calipers on my 2009 Street Triple R.
    One thing I did find out, though........the pressure seals don't seem to be shaped on my calipers....I could feel the lip every time and even removed one, flipped it and could still feel it. So I guess the caliper must be designed so the seal is made and the rubber seals are square.
    Had a slightly tricky job bleeding the system (my first time ever bleeding brakes) but managed and been out for a short run - everything working fine with no leaks.
    Complete flush of fluid too.
    I'd never done anything like this before but your video gave me the confidence and info I needed.
    Thanks a million....probably saved me a couple of hundred quid!!!
    Cheers!!!
    PS....the nerdy word you were looking for....trapezoid :)

    Not sure what exactly you are asking? The dust seals do snap into a recess so they need to be levered out carefully (if you don't have any new ones) and then popped back in firmly afterwards, but generally the dust boots are manual fit on and off... hope that helps with what you wanted, Del

    Glad you liked my fix on the hydraulics Del. Another thing I meant to mention was, just as you had warned, most of the dust seal groves were full of crusty crud, so I cut the head of a bicycle spoke off, flattened the turned end with a hammer, filed it square and used it as a right angled scraper to clean out the groves, worked a treat! The threaded end also acted as a mild scraper in poking gunge out of the drilled oil ways. Result!

  • @Moonfleet41

    Hi mate,thanks for your kind words, brakes can sometimes be a little difficult to free up.The process of heating up an item & allowing it to cool again is referred to as a heat cycle & with brakes & tyres, exhausts, etc., this happens countless times in the life of the item, continued heat cycling can lead to seizures & dis-assembley problems so nothing out of the ordinary, I just need to know what you mean by 'screw cap over the bolt', could you explain or send a photo so I can help? Cheers Del

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Hi mate, when I replaced mine the salt build up behind the dust seals had actually pushed them out and caused them to get trapped, which damaged them, so I had no choice...but as long as they are in perfectly good condition and not leaking, then there's no reason not to clean them thoroughly & reinstall them, just when you're done give the bike a good thorough test before relying on them...unless they've done over 30,000 miles, they shouldn't be worn...good luck, let me know how it goes, Del

    Brilliant instructional mate. I started doing as much on my bike as I could to save money and quickly realised two things (1) I really enjoyed it! (2) paying for work to be done is no guarantee it will be done properly. If you do it yourself you have more of an idea what state your bike is in IMO.
    Brakes and electrics have fazed me up to now. Not any longer though (well brakes anyway) thanks to this vid and part 2.
    Really appreciate the detail and effort in general.

      Hi Craig, thank you for your kind words... that's how it started for us, realising that people wanted to maintain their bikes, but the dealers were doing a pretty good job of scaring everyone off even doing the most basic jobs, and then couple that with their prices! Like us, most are just normal, working people, and whilst we realise all businesses have to make living, when we hear from the prices people have been charged, it's shocking sometimes, especially for basic maintenance, so we thought we'd share some tips and show what we do, the response has been amazing... and like you say, it gives you a real sense of pride in ownership of your bike! As long as people keep watching, we'll keep doing what we do! Ride safe my friend, all the best, Del & Penny

      OMG... $880? that's the most ridiculous sum of money I've ever heard! After all, it's just cleaning and few seals... the most I've heard a garage charging to re-build two front calipers is £250 but this doesn't surprise me, as the one thing dealers love to do is charge lol! good luck with your re-builds, feel free to drop us a line if you get stuck!

    Hi mate, to clean the pistons I used "Solvol Autosol" polish...its an abrasive metal polish and leave them like new... if you see a kit for sale it should state what is in there, is will usually be the pressure seals and dust seals, plus maybe the centre seal too....as long as they are comprehensive then you should be ok... good luck with it.. Del.

      @@SEANO1810 Yes mate, as long as they are clean with no nicks or cuts in them, and they weren't leaking before, then you should be able to re-use them, but remember that they're old seals and perhaps get some in the future, just to be safe!

    Excellent video. I'm a 60 year old mechanical engineer with over 45 years experience working on cars and bikes. I have one small suggestion: When you describing "cracking" bolts, apply a quick pulse of power to the wrench. Not with a hammer, just with your hands. This will create a point load and will be easier to crack the bolt and it will result in fewer broken bolts. A lot of force, gradually applied will break more bolts than a quick jerk or force. Thanks again! Great video!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 років тому +1

      Hi David, thank you for that sterling advice, and I already know that to be absolutely correct, as it was something taught to me by my grandfather - in a video I did on fork seals, I made mention of that technique for cracking off the bottom bolt in the forks... mainly because it screws in to the damper rod and there's nothing other than the force of the internal spring to stop that from turning, and if you give it a good sharp snap with the heel of your hand on the wrench, then usually it breaks free first time... I love how the oldest advice are still the best, and being passed down through the generations... thank you again for your input, it's great to be reminded of the important little things we can forget... all the best, Del

    Hi mate, glad you got the pins sorted & seized pins are a common problem if you don't clean your brakes. There are 3 ways to plump your front calipers, so how have you got them hosed up so that I can just how to bleed them? Is it the factory way with a splitter? or 2 hoses from the bar to each separately, or a single hose to one and then piggy-backed to the other? ... oh, and have you emptied the hoses completely, or just taken the ends off at the bottom? ...

    HI mate, and thanks for your kind comments, good old GPX calipers, don't they just love to seize up?! To anser your question, no,you can get away with using the old ones as long as they aren't worn or split,you have to take the calipers apart and take the seals out as the salt water gets in behind them, dries, leaving the salt behind which builds up and pushes the seals out,once you've scraped cleaned all this out you can rebuild them,but for me they were £8,so it was a no brainer,Good luck Del

    This is really good, I was riding today and coming home my back break wasn't releasing is a 2002 kawasaki Meanstreak 1500cc not sure I have nerve to take apart the brake to see what's wrong...but this is definitely informative. I tempted to just ride without the back break until I'm able to understand exactly what the problem is.

    Hello jay. Its probably binding due to being caked up with dust and dirt....when you ride, the rubbing brake gets hot and expands, which just makes it worse...you'll have to take it off, take the pads out of it, and clean the crap out...if that doesnt sort it, then its time to rebuild the caliper with new seals...good luck mate.. • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Hi Joni. there is no doubt what so ever that rebuilding your calipers would definitley eliminate all the binding, they will operate like new again and stay that way for a year or more...but only attempt it yoursrlf if you're sure you can understand the job from start to finish, and make sure you do a good safe job of it...of you can,,then get stuck in...The seals and a bit of fluid are all it needs in parts, so labour by a garage should be about 3 hours tops, it just depends on thier hourly rate

    Hi mate, well spotted, sticky calipers don't only bind you'll also have reduced braking power, which is all bad! Leave the caliper plumbed up, soak the gum line of the pistons with WD40 for an hour or so to soften the crud then pump them out with the brake lever..hold back the ones that move which will focus the power on the stuck one & prevent them popping out..that usually works fine,but if it doesn't let me know,there are a few other options that are a bit rougher if you are really in trouble

    Hi Billy, yes it is mate, you'll have to strip the caliper to it;s bare castings and the powder coaters much ensure that absolutely NONE of the mateing surfaces get any powder on them or they will leak... and on top of that, as powder coating is very hard, it can chip, which makes it hard to keep looking good... but plenty of people do it, specially the Barry Boys on their hot hatches... good luck with it, Del

    Hi Ade.. that's an old college class rule, but in practice, as long as the caliper isnt too old and then its fine..the castings didnt have any scoring and the pistons were mint...but i will agree, if you want to be totally OCD and make a tip top job, then keep each piston matched to the hole it came from.. good point well made mate. Thanks for watching mate, take care, Del.

    Loverly job :-), ive done my own and frends, and my rule is clean clean clean.
    I dont disconnect the hose unless i have to, as i often dont have new banjo washers.
    For really nasty ring grooves ive used soft wood or soft plastic to clean them, otherwise a clean cloth works fine, old toothbrushes work well.
    If im just replacing pads then i pump the pistons nearly out and clean them, dont want the ridge of crap hitting the seals.
    Great tutorial :-)

    Great video Del. I was looking for a way of shifting a stuck piston in the front calipers of my ZZR1100 and thought of using the hydraulics but liked your tip on cleaning the caliper first with soap and water and also the tip on cracking the assembly bolts before removing the caliper. Also your trick of the old inner tube worked great on working the piston free. Mind you, the one was so tight I did unfortunately mark the piston (new one on order!) however worked well on removing all the others including rear caliper. A further suggestion though, on twin disc bikes it's best to remove both calipers at the same time and carefully pump the pistons out, otherwise as I found, you've lost the ability to tackle the second one because the fluid's gone on the first! I ended up using a nut and bolt with a couple of fibre washers to sandwich the loose banjo so I could top up with fluid and pump the second set out.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 років тому

      Hi Jeff..
      You are right on the twin caliper question mate, you'll need the hydraulics fully plumbed up and working to get them out...and tha can be tricky....but i like the trick you used too, like all these things my friend, you just improvise and overcome aye.. well done for tackling it mate... all the best, Del.
