Oh my GOD. I've been such a skeptic of the whole idea of a neti pot for years... but have had so much trouble lately with congestion and allergy problems since moving to a new state. I just tried one for the first time and cannot believe for the life of me the difference I feel in ONE time using it. Ashley's video made a world of difference -- the part where she says "lift your elbow" makes using it super simple. At first I wasn't doing that and all the stuff went down my throat, but as soon as I remembered that simple tip, bam -- worked perfectly. I seriously forgot what it felt like to breathe correctly and freely -- why I waited 54 years I have no idea. I will be a 2x a day user -- and a tip: If you are like me where your company has a Flex Spending Account (FSA), you can use that money and then you aren't even using your own $$!!
Helpful advice: whichever nostril is more clogged...pour water in the other nostril first. If it's a very bad day you can just do the one side and it will still help A LOT. On light or medium clogged days do both sides.
Great video! Thanks for the thorough directions. Bought a cheap plastic blue one from Walmart just now for $14 that came with 50 packets of premixed saline. Breathing through the mouth, felt a slight pressure similar to getting water in your nose after swimming but very painless. (Maybe one tear) Feels great now! Just took Flonase afterwards. Hope this solves my sinus infection issues. I was sick for 6 months around this time last year due to seasonal allergies and sinus infections that turned into full on flu's.
Watched this before using Neti Pot for first time! super helpful and encouraging. So important that you said to just relax and let it flow. I was super tense, but once I tried to just relax it worked! Thanks! You rock!!!

Great video. I started on this a year ago and LOVE it. Used to get painful headaches whenever my allergies flared up. I would use a particular sinus spray or pill, then build up tolerance to it. I like that this is medication free and have recommended this to other allergy sufferers. Have to point out that the sensation felt a little weird the first time around but I got the hang of it on my third attempt.
@@AshleysConsciousLife more back!? Wouldn't that make it drain back into her throat MORE? My doctor instructed me to use a neti pot in addition to the meds he gave me yesterday. I was a bit scared of the whole procedure but went along with your video step by step and it was super easy and not scary. Thanks!!
It's one of those things you need to prepare for. I bought a kit in the drugstore that included a plastic neti pot and packets of saline to mix. I have had best results with very neutral temperature - slightly lukewarm water that matches your body temperature. Too cold or too hot is uncomfortable, and plain water without saline is also painful. It also helps to have a neti pot with a lid so you can tilt way over. What you want to avoid is the "drowning" feeling in your nose. You have to resist the urge to exhale as you do when going underwater, no breathing through your nose either way. I get the nozzle in one nostril, steady the neti pot against my face, then lean forward and turn my head so water flows out of the open nostril, and relax while mouth breathing. It will not hurt if you do it right. It is actually pleasant when you get used to it. Only when you remove the nozzle should you let the water drain and exhale through your nose. I like to have kleenex ready to gently blow my nose to clear the saline and everything else that rinses out. It is amazing how much mucus and potential debris will emerge from your nose by doing this. Then the saline helps dry your sinuses and you get clear unobstructed breathing through your nose.

Nicely done! Much easier than I thought it would be. I didn't realize the water just flowed through like that. I'm 67 and a native North Californian, and I think that I'm starting an allergy to all of the famous pollens of the Bay Area which are said to be about the worst in the country!

Cool! I'm so glad I finally got the post/video updated and fixed for others to see. Thank you for all your kind words and support, I always like seeing comments from you. ( :
Whatever you do don't use a neti pot for rebound congestion from nasal spray, I learned that the hard way. I use it when quitting nasal spray and the solution got trapped in my sinuses for over 24 hrs and it caused the worst sinus headache too. I tried it to alleviate the congestion and it made it worse in turn lol.
@Zak Petruniak- For me, this is just one way I relieve my allergies, I also take a supplement called D-Hist that I find to be much more helpful in getting allergy relief. I love my neti pot, but I have to do them both. ( :
+AshleysGreenLife What kind of impurities do you think you're removing by boiling the water? You know boiling it and distilling it are not the same thing.
+viker77 It's the microorganisms that our stomach acid can kill but our delicate sinus are susceptible to. Two people died in Louisiana in 2011 because they used unboiled tap water in their Neti pot.
+rachellespen i use urine and find is the safest , always right temperature and proper concentration of mineral to avoid osmose shock + contains antibacterial properties. i use on a windy dusty day or when i do renovation . i love ceramic one but will break if dropped so plastic is better
Twice a day as a regular part of life? Thanks. I didn't know. I've used mine only every so many years when I'm fighting congestion. Rarely catch colds or flu. Respiratory issues once every 9-10 years is my norm. Will use it more frequently to see if will help with other issues. Thx.
I’ve got a super bad cold right now so I thought I’d try this before I went to bed. The first time I forgot to open my mouth!! It took me a few tries not to freak out and just let it flow. But I found even when I tried to just breathe out of my mouth, it felt like some of it was dribbling into my throat and I freaked out bc I thought I was gonna choke. I’m sure it just takes practice to get used to. Feels super weird the first time though. For a cold, the results are also short lived, but at least I could breathe for a a few minutes
For those trying this for the first time be warned that if you do it incorrectly it’s going to feel like you’ve gotten water up your nose while diving into a pool. But once you get the hang of it you won’t give it up.
I love my neti pot! I hear a lot of people who try it and don't like it say its because they chocked on the water. My tip to them is they need their head tilted a little bit more forward. I do it very frequently when I am getting or have a cold as well. Best decongestant there is!
Thanks for an informative video! I'm having a bit of trouble, though; when I try to do it, the water often just seeps out from the same nostril I have the pot inserted into. My nostrils are fairly large, though, so maybe the pot I got just isn't big enough. I have got it to work a few times, though, and I can tell that it helps. Any tips on getting the right position for the head and pot?
Sometimes if my nose is congested it's hard to get it to go through, could that help? You might try moving your elbow or tilting your head slightly? Anyone else have any tips to share?
I use to use Nell rinse for my sinus it's time consuming, and how to replace it every three months that such a budget. But for what Ashley about her neti pot is made sounds it will last you longer.
Have you ever used ALKALOL. It is a natural soothing Nasal Wash. I have been putting that in my NetiPot along with salt and warm water. It really works.
Yes I have one, It trickles more on that side, that side is more closed, but it helps to get out gunk, it really has helped me get rid Of my sinus headaches, and its easier after you do it awhile, I have a deviated septum and get sinus infections easy..
Thanks for the tutorial. I was told about Neti pots a few days ago and got one but the instructions were not to be found. When I saw an allergy specialist, he gave me instructions to make my own saline with baking soda and salt and a syringe. He told me to put 1cc in one nostril and do the same for the other. I did it for 3 days but kept choking on it while it was in my throat. This was my first time and it actually went well although I still have a lot of mucus in my throat. I've had post-nasal drip for 14 months and it just kept getting worse. Found out I am allergic to dust mites. I have Zyrtec, Flonase spray, and an Albuterol inhaler. The inhaler isn't really helping but the other 2 have eased my symptoms.
survivrs Wow, you've got a lot going on. That's no fun, I've struggled with allergies for years before finally getting some relief. the netipot has been really helpful for me and this supplement: D-Hist (www.amazon.com/Ortho-Molecular-Product-Natural-Capsules/dp/B0006ON6D8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426533298&sr=8-1&keywords=d-hist) You'll have to read some of the other reviews on Amazon but this is the best "allergy medication" I've found that doesn't cause drowsiness or other common allergy med side effects. Hope it can help you too. I need to do a video about it soon. ( :
***** Thanks for your response. Some times it is easy and other times I forget what you did and get some down my throat but it's tolerable and just not constantly trying to clear my throat. Saturday was an EPIC day all day long.
***** I'm going to embarrass myself here. Last night I was going to use the neti pot while my husband watched. and I must have gotten flustered because as I poured it into the correct nostril, I was plugging the other one. I didn't know why it wasn't pouring out the other and after choking briefly, I knew not to do that again, at least I hope I don't. I see I left out that little tidbit about plugging the other nostril. That was not a great thing to do.
I used to get sinus infections annually, sometimes bad ones resulting in doctor visits and wasted money on antibiotics and of course, copays. One doctor repeatedly recommended using some sort of nasal irrigation like a saline-baking soda solution spray. I chose against it and continued to suffer sinus problems. Later on, I watched Live! with Regis and Kelly many years ago, and in the midst of yet another sinus infection (I hadn't seen the doctor just yet), in which they used a neti-pot on camera. Well, that day I decided to get one and use it. That was well over ten years ago. My sinus infection subsided and within a few days it was gone and I haven't had a sinus infection since!!! I only use it when I feel stuffy or notice some sinus pressure or slight pain, no need for daily use for me and the sensation is not anything like what one would expect because the salinity is similar to that of your tears or other nasal/sinus fluids and the temperature should be about body temp. Then one should never experience the evil pain associated with Water Up The Nose.
Glad you are experiencing relief! I've gone to just using it daily, what works for me, but that's great you only have to use it on an as needed basis and are seeing such great results. ( :
Thank you for the video, I was wondering why the water was running out of the pot all over the placei, now you have solved my problem. I was putting too much water in. 😀
Bath water is nice and hot not luke warm, that was a heaping 1/4 tsp you didn't level it off. you aren't supposed to blow hard because you don't want to force the mixture up into your ear canal. you are also supposed to wash the neti when done which you didn't mention and the neti is only for short term use, you are also washing away vital bacteria that fights off infections and if you ever stop you can get a serious sinus infection. also I love your hair.
Salt itself is enough to kill off tons of bacteria. It creates a hypertonic environment that draws water from cells and they die. It can definitely kill any bacteria, helpful or harmful. That's why salt is used as a preservative.
Alexander Jenkins Saline nasal sprays are great to keep your nasal passages moisturized. Nasal irrigation, though, works differently. You are literally rinsing out your sinuses, flushing out irritants and excess mucus. I would only do it twice a day if I were currently suffering from allergies, congestion, or a cold, though. I did use it twice a day when the skies here in Atlanta were smoky from the North Georgia wildfires last year. Really helped keep the irritation down.
I have learned to do this after I have had the worst sinus headaches, It was hard at first, now its not hard at all, its such a relief to see all the green gunk come out, my next step is to use it regular not just to seek relief thanks for the video, I wasnt tilting enough and I lost my directions, doing 1/2 cup on each side, GREAT way to keep from spilling some :) thanks again
Really helpful - thanks. I'll give my neti pot another try; I must have been doing something wrong when I first tried it because the saline dripped down my throat. Yuck.
pokkit Oh no...try making sure the water is pretty warm, and tilt your head forward a bit so it won't go down your throat...just some ideas. Sorry to hear it didn't go well ) :
Thanks for your reply! I figured it out - my neck is a little stiff so I had to tilt my whole body in order to get the angle right. I had to be nearly perpendicular, plus tilted slightly forward as you suggested. A friend suggested the upright kind of nasal rinse that is more like a squeeze water bottle - have you ever tried that? I'm wondering whether it would be easier for me.
Thank you, Ashley. I'm about to do this for the first time, and your video here was very helpful....because I 'didn't have a clue' how those things worked, but, THANKS to you, now I do. You made me feel very comfortable in using one now.....and I appreciate that. ~D.B.
I've used a neti pod before with good results. I watched your video, and have a question. I’ve boiled water I filtered, and then have calibrated the water in the neti pod to be about 95 degrees. This is cooler than I have done it in the past, but I’m experiencing a burning when I do the procedure. I’m not sure what this indicates. Does this mean that the sinus infection or inflammation is bad?
Great video! I've been using a neti pot for several years, but I was looking for a video to share with friends who've never tried it. A note about boiling the water: it's much more serious than just removing impurities! In very rare cases, you may have an amoeba in your water supply, and getting it in your sinuses can be fatal. But if you boil your water first, it's perfectly safe. There were two deaths attributed to this, so it's super rare. But it's very easy to prevent, so why take chances?
Oh I agree and am well aware of the dangers of not boiling (with the amoeba issues). Freaky stuff! These days I feel much safer to just use distilled water and not even take the chance with tap (even with the boiling). Glad to hear you enjoy the benefits of using a neti pot as well! ( :
I have tried using the Neti pot and I used the Neti pot salt and I have all the ingredients but it just won't come out of my other nostril. What do I do?
I just use the neti pot for the first time yesterday and I had to keep moving my head until it came out. It is a little unnerving though because of the fear you'll inhale the water.
@Julia Klugman Happened to me, I just tilted my head back a tiny bit (didn't lean as far forward as I was initially). That helped. Alternatively, take a break, try again. If it doesn't work after 3 tries, maybe see a doctor, as the blockage may be more serious, and may need medical attention. Best of luck to you.
If you can block each side of your nose and breathe through both sides it should work. One thing some people do wrong is block the spout opening against the inside of their nostril. You may need to pull it slightly out so the water will flow.
I also fill the pot up totally not a 1/2 cup, never heard of that either - I was taught to use it at the Himalayan Institute in Illinois, they now sell neti pots and the solutions you can put into them. You can get premeasured packages of salt/baking soda wherever you buy your pot
Hi there thankyou for this have given it a try and I think my sinuses will take a few goes to clear out as slightly blocked at the back but did work well none the less fells better than it has in ages
Can I use distilled water with minerals added for taste, its nursery water for my little sister but it says distilled on it, it just has a little added stuff
YouSillyClown Your stomach acid destroys the bad bacteria in tap water so it is safe to drink. When you put it in your nostrils the harmful pathogens just shoot straight to your brain.
It's people like you that makes the world a wonderful place,it felt weird but the sinus relief oh my it was wonderful. My head felt like it was about to explode through my face, now I can finally sleep. :D
I bring 2 cups water to a boil, then dissolve bit less than 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda and less than 1 teaspoon of Canning salt in the water. let it cool for 30 minutes. Got this recipe from my Local Hospital. It called for 1 tsp of both but i found it burns too much. so i backed off a bit. (Remove from heat before u add the Baking Soda and Salt or it will frizz up.)
Another thing you can try is broccoli sprouts, i had Serious allergies my nose would not stop running and sneezing was driving me crazy. I am cured now .. I still have episodes but i just eat more sprouts and I'm fine again.
I just tried the neti pot. It ran down my throat a lot and not really out of my nose as much. My nose does feel better. maybe I will get the hang of it after a few tries.
Been using neti pot for 8 years now as part of my yoga practice. I use a pinch of Himalayan salt and warm water. Sometimes put a homeopathic nasal spray in the water. My hay fever and sinusitis bouts have reduced greatly.

Thanks for that demo. Someone at work had suggested I try this since my nasal passages are always dry and clogged. You give me hope :-)
+Norma Jean Hope it can help!
This is the blog post that first introduced me to you and your youtube channel. :D I was researching nasal rinses/neti pots 2 months ago when I had the flu and found your blog post on this. You have helped me so much, so big thank you, for your awesome blog and youtube channel!
Cool! I'm so glad I finally got the post/video updated and fixed for others to see. Thank you for all your kind words and support, I always like seeing comments from you. ( :
I watched it! Thanks again for the shout out!
***** You are very welcome! :)
When I try this, the water comes out of my throat. Have you ever heard of this?
+Michel Nadon Wait... what? You put your own piss in your nose?
+Dre Sage Piss off! :P
An excellent and clear description on how to use a neti pot.
Thanks!
Twice a day as a regular part of life? Thanks. I didn't know. I've used mine only every so many years when I'm fighting congestion. Rarely catch colds or flu. Respiratory issues once every 9-10 years is my norm. Will use it more frequently to see if will help with other issues. Thx.
Thanks a bunch for this video. I watched it a couple of times and just used a Neti pot for the first time. Your video helped a lot.
So glad to hear it! I still love and use mine daily, though I just use it once a day now seems to be all I need. ( :
I love my neti pot! I only seem to remember to use it when I'm sick though. I'm going to try to use it daily!
Cool!
This looks strangely satisfying!
And it kind of is!
It absolutely will not come down the other nostril only out of my mouth in a slow trickle!
So true.
I love my neti pot! I hear a lot of people who try it and don't like it say its because they chocked on the water. My tip to them is they need their head tilted a little bit more forward. I do it very frequently when I am getting or have a cold as well. Best decongestant there is!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you first timer about to do this. Here i gooooo
Good luck!
Bought one yesterday and I can't wait to try it out.
Hope it helps you out!
Ashley's Green Life Hopefully it will.. Thanks
I use to use Nell rinse for my sinus it's time consuming, and how to replace it every three months that such a budget. But for what Ashley about her neti pot is made sounds it will last you longer.
Thanks I just got one because of my pounding headache for days. Very good review and instructions!
+Laurie Hiler Good to hear, hope you feel better!
Lol your shirt in the mirror evil green lol
Nuno Pereira Ha! Never noticed that before...lol. ( :
If you're going to nitpick make sure your grammar is on point, you must be one of those people that likes to suck the life/fun out of everything.

Ooo shiza lol!!
great video! very informative. I just purchased one. suffer from terrible allergies thanks
is it helping
***** a lil
Wow she actually replies and helps. Very nice! Too bad I can't get my neti pot to work =/
***** I try to reply to most comments ( : Sorry to hear you can't get your's to work.
Jo Dadda check to see if it's plugged in.
have you tried turning it off and on again?
Have you ever used ALKALOL. It is a natural soothing Nasal Wash. I have been putting that in my NetiPot along with salt and warm water. It really works.
Can this be used even when you have a deviated septum?
Rich Stein I am not sure...anyone else try this that has a deviated septum?

Glad to help!
If you sanitize the neti pot well, it's going to be usable for quite a long time.
How many times per week or month should you use it, do you think. I do not want to do it.
Matthew Starcher chill
I'll try it. No need for anything labelled "Netti Pot salt" though - that's just a way to triple salt's price.
Iodised or non-iodised salt will do
Sometimes iodized salt can irritate your nose, but good luck if it works for you.
This video was recommended from a clip of Daredevil using a netipot. Lol
I've been told that before! Who would have thought?
I have learned to do this after I have had the worst sinus headaches, It was hard at first, now its not hard at all, its such a relief to see all the green gunk come out, my next step is to use it regular not just to seek relief thanks for the video, I wasnt tilting enough and I lost my directions, doing 1/2 cup on each side, GREAT way to keep from spilling some :) thanks again
You can really breath through your mouth while pooring in the water (the more you know)
jrteenspiddy Good tip to add!
Really helpful - thanks. I'll give my neti pot another try; I must have been doing something wrong when I first tried it because the saline dripped down my throat. Yuck.
pokkit OK, here I am a few minutes later with my nose and throat burning and tears running down my cheeks. What am I doing wrong?
pokkit Oh no...try making sure the water is pretty warm, and tilt your head forward a bit so it won't go down your throat...just some ideas.
Does the water come out of the other nostril?
Yep on the other side.
Jimboo0825 yup
Great instruction. Simple and to the point.
+Angelita Ferro Thanks!
Is neti pot a permanent relief from sinus?
Thank you, Ashley. I'm about to do this for the first time, and your video here was very helpful....because I 'didn't have a clue' how those things worked, but, THANKS to you, now I do. You made me feel very comfortable in using one now.....and I appreciate that.
~D.B.
+DragoBalboa Glad to hear it! Best of luck with it. ( :
That shit is gnarly
Thanks for the video. I was anxious about doing it wrong but watching you do it helped.
Glad you found it helpful!
I have tried using the Neti pot and I used the Neti pot salt and I have all the ingredients but it just won't come out of my other nostril. What do I do?
Julia Klugman I read somewhere that if you can't get it out through the other nostril the block could be quite serious and needs doctor's attention.
I just use the neti pot for the first time yesterday and I had to keep moving my head until it came out. It is a little unnerving though because of the fear you'll inhale the water.
@Julia Klugman
Happened to me, I just tilted my head back a tiny bit (didn't lean as far forward as I was initially).
Yep, I have the same issue...
I also fill the pot up totally not a 1/2 cup, never heard of that either - I was taught to use it at the Himalayan Institute in Illinois, they now sell neti pots and the solutions you can put into them. You can get premeasured packages of salt/baking soda wherever you buy your pot
Crazy ol' George Sibley brought me here.
Thanks for the simple and well edited tutorial!!
You're welcome!
wait . . . isn't this waterboarding?
+Amanda S A wicked sense of humour is a joy to behold... You made my day!
Water boarding is pretty much drowning someone, so not exactly.
Hi there thankyou for this have given it a try and I think my sinuses will take a few goes to clear out as slightly blocked at the back but did work well none the less fells better than it has in ages
Glad to hear it! ( :
Can I use distilled water with minerals added for taste, its nursery water for my little sister but it says distilled on it, it just has a little added stuff
Like please somebody respond I'm tired of not breathing through my nose
VOID SNiP3z GD try it
VOID SNiP3z GD DO NOT use tap water with a neti pot. Possible pathogens in the water can kill you. So yes make sure to use distilled water.
i mean if the tap water in your area is safe enough to drink then honestly i don't see any problem with using it for a neti pot just as it is...
you should only use salt that does not contain iodine
I bring 2 cups water to a boil, then dissolve bit less than 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda and less than 1 teaspoon of Canning salt in the water. let it cool for 30 minutes. Got this recipe from my Local Hospital. It called for 1 tsp of both but i found it burns too much. so i backed off a bit. (Remove from heat before u add the Baking Soda and Salt or it will frizz up.)
If tigers had UA-cam, and could buy a neti pot, they'd probably use it. :)
I'm sorry, what? 😂
Saundra Davis, Of course, tigers. What do you not understand? Obviously tigers need to irrigate their nasal passages.
Another thing you can try is broccoli sprouts, i had Serious allergies my nose would not stop running and sneezing was driving me crazy. I am cured now .. I still have episodes but i just eat more sprouts and I'm fine again.
Nice. Thanks.
Try to breathe using diafragm
good advice
I'll have to give that a try. I usually use my anus to breathe.
Great vid.
Followed everything to a tee.
Worked out great. Thanks
So glad to hear it!
My friend uses this after she sniffs her drug's and she says its the best!!! Thanks Ash😋
Thanks! Big help as this will be my first time using a Neti Pot.
Hope it helps you!
I don't know why i watched this...i don't have allergies lol
I just tried the neti pot. It ran down my throat a lot and not really out of my nose as much. My nose does feel better. maybe I will get the hang of it after a few tries.
Beverly Brady It does take a few tries to get the hang of it. Hope it get better. ( :
I tried and I got scared and stopped lol
Been using neti pot for 8 years now as part of my yoga practice. I use a pinch of Himalayan salt and warm water. Sometimes put a homeopathic nasal spray in the water. My hay fever and sinusitis bouts have reduced greatly.
+Andrew Carew-Reid Awesome! Thanks for sharing. ( :
Ditch the homeopathic nasal spray and use regular table salt. There, I just saved you a lot of money and it will be just as effective.
that's a lot of effort
