Sir, you have a great teaching style. I just bought a vintage 50’s Johnson. I’m just tryna to learn about it and came across your videos. Great breakdown, clear and concise information. Thank you.
T-Mike thank you very much for all your kind information. My boat is doing exactly what you were saying, it just keeps on running when stopped and I had to pull out the choke fully to kill the engine, so T-Mike a new kill switch is needed. "Brilliant Video".
Great info T mike, I just restored a 71 six horse Evinrude fisherman. Runs and looks great but no kill switch!! I’m going to install the lanyard one. I’ve got to newer outboards with those kill switches and think they are a good safety thing!
I'm guessing that the old style kill switches would ground out (internally) the 2 wires which come from the 2 breaker point terminals. I noticed in the video that you said to connect the new style kill switches with one wire to one point terminal and the other wire to the second point terminal. When the new kill switch is tripped the two point terminals would be connected to each other. Would this safely cut the current feeding the 2 coils and stop the motor? I thought I would ask before experimenting.
Great informative video. Thanks. 2 questions: 1 - Do you know of any Normally Open Kill Switches? I believe the Kill switches are normally Closed, correct? 2 - Why not wire a Normally Open Kill switch into the ignition? A lot less wiring that needs to be done as you can put it directly into the ignition wire line at the front where the key/ignition is.
Great video Mike. Want to add to a Johnson 1956 15hp (like the 1957 18hp). Have you installed one on the 1957-1959 18’s? Where did you install the kill switch?
In your magneto the same terminal that the lead from the condenser is connected to. The kill switch when pressed (or lanyard removed) basically shorts the points closed all the time. This, as Mike explained, prevents spark pulse going to the spark plugs.
Mike My 1971 9.5 has the kill switch already. It has about an inch of threads to protrude through the lower cowl. The switch with lanyard in your video looks to have very short length of threads. Do you know where I can get a longer threaded lanyard style kill switch?
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to mount one on a fd-11, the lower pan has zero room. And the later model mounts won’t fit.. So, was thinking of just making a little control box where my remote start switch will be and mount the box to side of the boat next to where I sit.
OK - so the two kill switch wires are attached to the same terminal on the points to which the condenser and the coil are already attached -- is that right?
TM ! Hello Louisiana just recently found you ,like your down to earth style. I'm a verified land lubber .Rebuilding an EJ RDSL-21 35hp 1959.Last started in 80's.Pumps,carb,gaskets done. About to attempt a stand start up using proper hookup through key/solenoid Will Cut out prevent this ?
Hey t mike, I got a 75 evinrude 25. Bought a updated killswitch and started to replace then realized my old switch only had 2 wires this new one has 4. 2 labeled m 2 labeled I but no wiring diagram what do I need to hook up to these 4 posts?
Thanks T-Mike/another great video/appreciate your sharing and education (T-Mike tips) as always. BTW - shopping for detailed and thorough manual for my 1976 Johnson 9.9 with a model# of 10E76R. I have seen an official Johnson OMC "service manual" with 10E76 model# listed on cover which I assume is accurate enough? Unfortunately on Ebay they want $99. Wow. I have to do better than that. Do I need an official Johnson OMC "service manual" to get thorough enough pics and instructions for a DIY 1st timer like me or will a Seloc generic in that category work? Also, do you recommend any ONLINE outboard manual services that might ? provide a decent manual (I don't think some specify what the source/type of book one is purchasing and seen some bad reviews on some of them) that would be thorough enough or and worth the cost . Appreciate your thoughts.
I thought I watched a video on the repair of the tiller handle for a 56 evinrude did you do one or am I going crazy because I can't find it anywhere by any one

Thank you T-Mykes
It’s also called a man overboard switch real handy if you fall out of the boat and it revs up and leaves you behind great videos 👍🏻

Excellent subject, I`ll be looking forward to the rest of the series as I do with all your vids.
I've been looking for this exact video thank you for posting it
T-Mike I think this was great topic, safety is always a good thing. Thanks for video👌

Kill switches are normally open. When activated they close and apply a ground You could use a standard open switch.

Hi from Australia Mike, Just wondering which teminals you are refering to conect the wires? Thanks Peter

Right
Thanks, T-Mike! I’ve been waiting for this.

Hey mike ! Nice videos . Can you make a video showing how to rebuild a dual line fuel connector ?
Great job!
Love your videos' but can't find one on starter problems. my starter spins and does not engage replaced solenoid but didn't help.
Sorry. Don’t work on electric start motors
