- This is the 400ex posted in our previous videos. After the 4wheeler required an engine rebuild in 2019, we decided to take some time, and advance some of the custom work that was begun back in 2016. See below for a detailed parts list and the custom paint description.

Paint is the following:
- Base coat: PPG self-etching epoxy
- Intermediate: CARC two-component, waterborne, acrylic aliphatic urethane used for military vehicle coating.
- Finish: Spectracron 380 2-part High-Solids Poly-iothane, Polyester Polyurethane, enamel topcoat
Spectrocron 380 is used to paint heavy equipment such as skid steers and front-end loaders and has a pencil hardness greater than most powder coat systems.

Brake lines should be routed on the backside of the a-arms not the front to prevent any debris from snagging or damaging the lines.

Live it. Just watched the first resto vide0. I'm 50 and picked up 2 blasters recently. They may be a bit small but one will be for tight woods other for wider trails. That one will get a swingarm stretch and widened. I bought them do to I love 2 strokes. Price was right and they're not beat to hell. Good thing as that they are both 06 disc brake models. I hope they turn out half as nice as yours

Get you some plus 2” a arms from Alba your shocks will still work great
So i love the idea of the air box, did you guys make your wire harness or did you order it through somebody? I'm in the process of building my 02 400ex for trails up in michigan. Very curious about the wire harness. I have a stock one on it right now and it looks like a challenge to re route it into that box. Thanks for keepin her alive!
David, Thanks! The air box is very nice. Getting the floppy, and poorly mounted battery into a solid compartment is always a good thing. I had the wiring harness custom built by a shop in southern Missouri. I’m convinced that replacing all stock wires on such an old quad is the most important mod that should be done. If you ever get the time can you explain the process of installing the cfm airbox intake? I recently ordered one and nothing seems to be lining up and the wiring is a mess.. Thanks
We drilled the subframe and bolted it on. It works better when you’ve cleaned-up your wiring. This harness is custom, but on our new build, we just bought a new harness from Honda, and had it installed. If we did a video showing us drilling the subframe, it would land in a world of misinformed hate! You might reach out to CFM and ask what they recommend for installing; they’ve always been helpful when we’ve called or emailed.

how has the fox shocks worked for you? I've been looking for a new pair to get rid of the pogo sticks but it hurts to spend 1000+ dollars for 2 shocks.
We Have enjoyed them for our uses. Joined with some extended a-arms, they are great shocks for the money.
Were those headlights able to work with the stock wiring harness?
They weren’t. Complete, custom harness on this ride.
Highly recommend the gt thunder oversized pegs made by Jeff Snure he powder coats them black very durable
Would like to see more about this. His website is useless, and nothing is mentioned about 400ex pegs. We are presently looking into some custom pegs for this.

Were the plastics hard to install? Did you need to make custom brackets or did they mount to the stock brackets. Quad looks amazing!
Tyler Schindler Hey man! Plastics are such a simple mod. You’ll be fine with this install. Everything mounts up very much like stock. There are a couple of stock pins in the back that Have nowhere to go on aftermarket plastics, but other than that... simple enough. The two brackets that mount from your front fenders to your frame need to be shifted slightly forward. Like, turn them forward. Installing them straight up will make your front fenders sit on a sharp corner, and your plastics will crack on that over time. You’ll see what I mean when you buy these. Have fun out there!

Tyler Schindler We did relocate the switch. If you watch our latest video, you’ll see us turn the switch on, and it’s located on the wind shroud under the front fender. We had the ignition wires dipped in plastic to protect them in such an exposed area. Both the light switch and the ignition are mounted on our right shroud.

Any leads on good companies making plastics kits? I’ve seen a couple different colors on EBay but for $600+ 😳
Was the battery box relocation hard to do? My 400ex always has electrical problems and I know it's mainly cuz of where all the stock wiring is located.
MILITANT MINDED The battery box install was simple enough. The wiring on these older quads is often bad, and the battery location on the stock EX’s makes it worse. We ripped out all the old wiring, and installed a completely new, custom wiring harness. This is probably the best thing that was done to this quad.
@@swampgumpharpy7977 I was wondering if you possibly could go over exactly how it was done, I think if you did a video on that alone, 409ex owners like myself would be extremely grateful...im a little nervous taking this on and no site or video goes over how exactly it is done. Love the build man I want to get mine to be mechanically sound and not have to worry about electrical problems anymore
@@militantminded109 Yikes!!! This would be a tough vidya! We are wiring our next EX in a couple of weeks, and we'll see what we can do. Don't hate us if it's too much to try to post, but we really will give it a shot.

great build where did u get the starter switch from?
That was bought at a local store. Seems like it was Fly. It’s a decent switch. Google fly kill switch and you’ll find it. Wire it reversed so it starts rather than kills. Make sure that an experienced electrical tech gives it a look before you park it in your garage!!

What size bead lock wheels are those? Also what size tires did you mount on the wheels?
9”back (5+3 offset), and 10” front. I’ll let you know tire size once I can check.

paint the exhaust gloss black also the tip and great reasonable performance mod is a 2006 FCR carb from a crf250/450 dirtbike,also add a cold air intake,Lastly upgrade to a 24v battery for faster starting.Great build btw

What brand is your handle bar clamp, im wanting to get fatty bars for my 1986 trx250r and im struggling to find 1 piece clamps
It’s Houser. It’s an anti-vibe clamp, and should be mounted to a race-performance steering stem. Our clamp is temporarily mounted to the stock stem, but we’re going to swap that soon.
@@swampgumpharpy7977 so youd advise and not running my stock stem, i don't have a ton of money but i dont like 2 piece clamps and cant really afford a new stem atm
Specs Gaming All of this style clamp that I’ve seen from Houser, Alba, Modquad, etc, would need to be mounted to an aftermarket stem. If you haven’t looked at the stems from Alba Racing, you might check them out. They are half the price of a Houser stem.
Just for fun, have a look at the Mako 360 SX clamp. It’s anti-vibe, and made for oversized bars.
where did you get the plastics ?
Juan Olvera , These Maier plastics were purchased from ZMP Performance. Maier makes plastics both with and without the headlight cut-out. These are without, so the stock headlights were removed.

I answered that in this video. After I bent my second set of stock hubs, I went with these from tusk because they are made better. If I could’ve bought them stock length but made this tough I would’ve.

Do you have the Alba antivibe bar clamp and +1 steering stem on there as well?
Ben Cronkhite , In this video the Houser anti-vibe clamp is temporarily mounted on the stock stem. It mounts, but anti-vibe bushings don’t make contact. We’re looking into either the Houser or Alba +2 stem.

The front tire tread is non-directional, we have an email from Fox stating that the shocks can be installed either way without issue, carrying extra fuel is nothing new, and yes... there are extra badges as we assume you’ve seen. Were these rhetorical concerns, or did your sister tell on us about last night?

@@swampgumpharpy7977 you should buy a crf 450 40mm fcr carbuerator it makes a huge difference you need to modify a bit to install it but it’s worth it

D&C Outdoors It’s interesting that you noticed the problem, because orientation between the Evol’s and the Float 3’s are different. The Fox Float Evol’s are the positioned like we have here, with the air chamber down; the Float 3 series is supposed to be installed with the air chamber up. So most folks wouldn’t notice wrong orientation between the two. Very good eye.

This isn’t correct. In fact, all race quads come from the factory wider in the back than front.
