How do you position this with social constructionism (Burr, Gergen etc). I understood constructivism was based on the idea that reality is a product of one’s own creation; each individual sees and interprets the world and their experiences through personal belief systems.
It's a good question (and get asked a bit because constructivism/constructionism seem so closely related). I think the core thing about constructivism is there's probably a clearer acknowledgement of the social dimensions of knowledge construction than an outright 'constructionist' approach. So while an individual might interpret the world through their personal belief systems, it's also worth recognising those belief systems are a product of socially constructed processes. All of that though should be read in light of a couple of things: paradigms are not the same as 'theories' (though closely related), and the way sociological theorists interpret constructivism is different to the way psychologists (even social psychologists like Burr and Gergen) interpret constructionism. Which in itself is kind of interesting to think about from within a constructivist paradigm! So tl;dr: related, perhaps even closely related, and lending themselves to the idea that we create meaning rather than 'discover it out there'!
