Becky as an oil painter a little thing I do is this. On white pre gesso canvasses I direct draw then water down some acrylic paint till thin (usually a raw sienna) and paint entire canvass with wide brush. Wait till dry then paint with my oils. The acrylic paint seals in your drawing to prevent smudging while painting. Ma,e sure you thin the acrylic so you can still see your drawi g underneath. So if you don't want to buy clear gesso or if you ha e run out of it you can use this tip. Thankyou so much for all you do love your videos. ❤
I've been watching your videos for just over 2 years and I have heard you many times say you love oil painting too, and I finally got to see you paint with it 😊 I just got some Princeton oil brushes too. My friend Liz from The Art Shop recommended them. I had never used expensive brushes before and OMG are their brushes beautiful to use. People don't always realise how important brush selection is. Those brushes have me the perfect amount of control 🙂 I had the same issues with my tiny canvases I just painted. My mini Mona is so textured and I hate that aspect 😂 I had gessoed it too with a layer (I gesso all pre primed canvases), but I would need to do 3 layers probably to actually flatten the texture a bit more. Wood is definitely my favourite texture for oils. I am glad you primed both sides. I had a wood slice crack this year. I had only primed the side I was painting on, but winter and having it close to a window allowed moisture to get in and crack it. Good work. I hope you do more on the channel 😀
PS I have a larger container of solvent. I pour my left overs into that. That's really my big brush cleaner and I have the Bob Ross wire thing in there. All the paint pigment sinks to the bottom and everything on top remains clean and will still clean your brushes. I then close the lid, and seal it until I need it next time. There is never any waste of solvent and this is the way I've been taught in various oil painting courses I've done.
Wow, what an amazing rock formation! Yep, another bucket list addition. We plan on visiting Australia sometime in the next few years and I would love to see that beauty! I love your painting of it! I have never used oils and I am always debating on whether I want to start. But I have quite a few art supplies as it is that I really need to use up before I even think about branching out. Thanks for the info on them. I had no idea that putting paint back in the tube was even a thing! Ohhhh, and those Meeden ceramic pots, yum!! Oh, for solvents, I pour my used stuff that hasn't evaporated (I don't use a ton of it), I put it in a jar and take it to my local household hazardous waste station. We usually seem to make a trip to them once every couple of years or so. I don't know if you have them over where you are it, but it's a place where residents can take things free of charge that the landfill won't accept. Generally old gas, solvents and the like, batteries, generally anything that is toxic in the environment - even old oil paint!
Wave Rock was certainly an amazing experience - it's a bit of a schlep to get to, but the roads are at least sealed from Perth to there, so that makes it a bit easier! I'll look into hazardous waste disposal, I'm sure we have something like that here too! 😊
I love all of your paintings Becky, they're beautiful! I don't do oil painting myself, it seems like too much fuss with the different chemicals and the drying time.

Hi Becky, loved the video. When i use solvent i let it rest in the container until the paint has settled on the bottom and you can syphon off the top clean solvent. Then you can wipe up the sludge in the bottom with a rag and throw it away. No more waste 😊
As an oil painter I wanted to share something about brush use. Try not to use brushes that are used for oil painting for any kind f water medium. No matter how much you clean the brush after painting there will be an oil residue that gets between the hairs and down into the ferrets that are permanent. That residue will break down acrylic and watercolor paint/pigment/medium. Which will cause water media to lose lightfastness.

Omg you painted a lot in this video. I love oil paints, when I first tried them out I was clueless on how to use them, I kept blending everything too much. And those Meeden art supplies look lovely. As to how you get rid of the solvent you have to take it to your local Recyling center but you can actually use it over and over, just empty it into a glass jar and leave it to separate and the paint will drop to the bottom and then you can drain the now clean solvent into a new glass jar and reuse it. I have my two glass jars of solvent under my bathroom sink and they have been there for years, I just reuse it over and over.

It's definitely easy to overblend - I've learned that through trial and error myself too. 😊 I'll be moving the Gamsol into a screwtop lid jar so I can reuse it, but I had to try out those little ceramic pans - I can see those being useful for lots of things. Maybe water based liquids in the future though, lol.
@BeckyTregear I use small metal one for when I'm painting before moving it to glass jars. You can definitely use the ceramic for when your painting and then move them to glass jars to put away.
I guess the smudging factor is why, when I've watched serious oil painters, they usually just make their sketch in paint. It's antintuitive for us watercolorists, but I guess it can be so easily changed in oil it doesn't matter. Nice demo!
Well I think you should do more oil paintings because I was blown away by these!!! They are outstanding!! I was fascinated watching you do them and I learnt a lot from this video, I've tried oil painting before and what a mess!! so the tips and tricks in this has really helped, Thank you!! Thank you so much! I had forgotten how much I love oil painting so I need to do it more often. I've made a mess in the past too, it just takes a bit of practise to get used to them, and then they're wonderful to paint with! Solvents are the biggest pain though, lol.
Funny, just got some tubes of oil paints myself and was dabbling after many years. I got so confused however about the mediums and solvents. After watching some (20 or so) videos, I was convinced I need some Galkyd and some Gamsol.😅 I got them even though they were not easy to get here in Austria. However, I think it is best to keep the mediums and solvents in jars which can be tightened. At least the solvents will evaporate fast. And they are also pretty flammable. I have them in an old honey jar and when I finished I screw the lid back on. After some hours/days? the paint settles to the ground and you can slowly pour the clear top part into a second jar and can wipe the paint out of the first one. So you do not waste all the solvent and you can throw the paper towel with the paint into the trash or into a separate container for the trash. 😊
Such a beautiful gift from Meeden; I love your paintings too. I can't use oils but I did buy some water based oil paints. I'm just too scared to try them, lol.
Hi Becky! Great video, as always, thank you for sharing your experience with oil paints. I love all three paintings, but my absolute favorite is the cute little mushroom. 🍄 Personally, I don’t work in oils, but I heard and saw my artist friends that do paint in oils that they reuse over and over the Gamsol, until at some point becomes too dirty for their work, then they use a container of some kind and discard it in there. They keep a lid on and when that container gets filled they take it to either a paint shop, or to a hazardous materials recycling facility, for safe disposal. Regarding sketching and drawing with a pencil (graphite) on the canvas being stressful and making almost impossible to erase mistakes, I learned that using a soft charcoal stick allows for better erasing action, try it wet or dry. And even if there will be smudges on the white of the canvas, the drawing underneath will become virtually invisible under the layers of paint, both acrylics and oil. Hi Becky, How you dispose of dirty water oil paint is not that simple. You have to get a glass jar with a lid and pour it there. Once your jar gets full it will separate the oil paint and the medium. You can reuse the medium again if you like. The oil paint must be dispose in a hazardous red trash because the galkyn medium has petroleum in it. Or you can find a oil paint studio that possibly has the red trash so ou can dispose of it. At home I like to use oil sticks to paint because I do not have to use a medium on it. I do love your oil paints and I also do the same with my paint, smudge it on a canvas sheet that is not mounted so I can put it in my art journal. I love those pots from meeden I might have to get them. Maria
These are great, Becky. How did that brush hold up to the solvent when you cleaned it? I've killed a few watercolour brushes with solvent, so I wouldn't normally use that type of brush with oil paint. But it looks like it would be great for a nice soft blend.
It held up perfectly! 😄 When I bought it, the display said they're for oil paints as well as acrylics and watercolours. Kind of an all rounder brush really. Of course, now I've used it with oils, it won't be used with anything else, haha.

Haha it's a whole new rabbit hole of supplies! I have a couple of easels; but filming with them is a bit awkward which is why I just painted on my desk. I'm not much of an easel user in general, lol.
Here in Germany it's forbidden to put solvent into the sink. Here is the guidelines what to do with this stuff in Germany. And it's as poisonous in Australia, though I don't know your rules down under, but I am sure also your environment needs protection ;-) How to dispose of turpentine and brush cleaner correctly - Summary Turpentine and brush cleaner contain solvents and are harmful to the environment. They must not be disposed of via the drain or toilet. Substances containing solvents must not be poured into the environment. Brush cleaner and turpentine cannot be disposed of in household waste. Brush cleaner and turpentine are classified as hazardous waste. Disposal can be done via the hazardous waste collection point or at the recycling center. Some building material dealers and hardware stores accept brush cleaner and turpentine free of charge. Disposal should be done in the original packaging or in a screw-top jar.
Please stop pouring paint solvent down the drain. You don't understand how terrible that is. You're poisoning the water supply and the animals that live in it. It doesn't just "disappear." It's not even water soluble. It's petroleum distillates... Get a solvent tank with a grate or coil. If you let the solvent sit, paint settles at the bottom and the clean solvent stays on top. This is how it is meant to be used. You can decant it if you want, but it really isn't necessary. Once your tank has enough sludge at the bottom, you can pour the clean excess into another container and clean the tank with paper towels, then re-pour your clean solvent back in it. Please, please stop pouring it down the drain. Even letting it evaporate outside is better than that.
