Oh my gosh. People need to stop commenting on Silvo riding Owen. The coach for the US Olympic team obviously knows what he’s doing, otherwise he wouldn’t be the coach! I was at a John Staples clinic yesterday(alternate and long listed for three Olympics), and he got on a horse. The horse was uncomfortable and misbehaved because John asked him to work and do things he didn’t normally do. That doesn’t make John abusive or not knowing what he’s doing. It just means the horse wasn’t used to the kind of ride John gave him. Same with Silvio.

Silvio did a great job on him but you can see the difference when you get back on because of the relationship you two have. Looks like this clinic did wonders for you. Stand by what I said in a previous video, this horse is gonna be a superstar! He's definitely not a snaffle mouth kind of horse. He needs the stronger bit, more to help you to help him rather than a means of pure control (if that makes sense?). Otherwise I feel his excitement would get the better of him and he'd run right into the bottom of the fences and end up tripping himself up. Which you definitely don't want on XC! Keep it up, he's amazing and he's the kind of horse that you can rise through the levels with! x
Hollie McIntyre I wouldn’t give advice on bits when you don’t ride the horse or teach them coz some days the horse my be really good and others really strong x
I know from personal experience that a stronger bit won’t always work, it can make the horse worsex

KirstyKasper, oh absolutely. Strong bits aren't always the answer. But Owen does seem to go better in the stronger bit, just to help with giving him reminders to concentrate.
You know the bit she rides him in is just a D ring snaffle and a grackle noseband ?
TBH Claire looks more suited for Owen. I didn’t really enjoy watching the instructor riding Owen because of the fact Owen looked very sketched out, and slightly scared. But Claire did an amazing job💕.
I agree on the fact that Claire is more suited for him, but disagree on the fact that it was not enjoyable to watch the instructor ride. Owen needs to be ridden in a shorter frame to be able to get over higher fences and more difficult courses, and the instructor tried that and introduced it very well to him. Owen looked like a different horse after the Instructor was done riding him.

He was wearing spurs, that horses doesn't need them. I don't know why he didn't take them off. Owen would have been more comfortable without as that's what he's used too

@rhiannon maclening Just because you have spurs on doesn't mean you need to ride with them. If your leg in in the correct position (and you're the correct size for your horse), spurs won't touch your horse's sides, you have to turn your calf to apply them.
The coach definitely put the spurs on initially, but it was pretty clear when he rode without them. As Owen's unfamiliar to him, it will naturally look a bit awkward as they figure each other out (hence Owen rocking and resisting until he figured out what the coach was asking of him). Claire's been riding him for months and knows all his 'buttons' so naturally she find a comfortable balance more quickly.
You should do a video where you try free jumping Owen!

There is no doubt Silvio liked Owen. Trainers of that level very rarely get on a horse at a Clinic anywhere in the world unless they see something special.
Owen is a big horse and you can see he likes to go down to his fences in a long frame(The fence whish Claire Highlights is a perfect example) . In a regular session I think Silvio would have used poles only but had a few minutes and the fences were small and he wanted to see what Owen would do if kept in a shorter frame. Owen actually showed he was confused as to where his feet were.
Once Claire got back on you could see he was thinking and they went much better.
Claire I think you have the makings of a super Event Horse in Owen. Your doing a great job with him. It will pay off

Is it just me or does Owen think this jumps are just little poles?? He clears them perfectly!!! He’s gonna make a great horse once he gets more practice!! Something that would be really helpful and actually fun is making jumps that are “scary” for the horses and jumping them! I’m a working student for Marilyn Payne (ex- Olympic judge for dressage) and during her lessons she makes scary jumps for the horses just so they can see more! It’s actually really good for if your eventing your horse simply because it allows them to get used to scary things!!! Anyways you guys look amazing!!! ❤️❤️

Omg I can just see how strong Owen is 😂 my horse is the same way. Pulling to the jumps... In the middle of lines... And after the jumps especially lol. Those ones are hard to ride especially when you're trying not to fight with them but they're completely ignoring you and just running through everything 😂

Amazing difference after you got back on. Sometimes watching people better than ourselves is the best way to visualize and learn. Owen slowed down and waited for you and trusted your stride count instead of just speeding through the course. He's come so far already! Looked like time and money well spent at this clinic!

I think Owen is too sensitive a horse for spurs. I'm not like.. screaming AbUsE or anything, I don't have a problem with spurs when they're used correctly, and I'm sure Sirio was using them correctly, I just think they're unnecessary on Owen and that it just makes him a bit uncomfortable. But wow he goes so nicely with Claire 😍 match made in heaven, those two.

Love it!! But I’m still questioning why he was wearing spurs when he KNEW Owen hated them and was having a bad time about it.
Yeah I don't get that either. He was doing better without them and when he got on with them he was doing worse
xwindyx it looked like he worked through with Owen on the spurs. Most horses resist spurs when they’ve had the wrong person on them with them on and they’ve taught them backwards that when spurs touch, horse backs off. He wasn’t at all digging in with them and it looked like he didn’t even use them after. But a horse must know forward no matter what. Even though Owen rushes it didn’t mean he was forward. There’s a difference and that’s what Silvio wanted Owen to learn. Definitely an experienced rider should do this. I’d never be able to reteach a horse about spurs but I understand the concept.
It depends on the reason why you use them. I use them so I can give more exact and lighter commands, not just stronger commands. I can pinpoint my place of contact. Spurs can be a really great tool for that.

Right. My horse has plenty of forward motion and doesn't "need" them for that purpose. They can improve your ability to send clear signals. The trainer might prefer to use them for similar reasons. Just adding another dimension of why someone might choose to use spurs :) Whatever their purpose, Owen wasn't a fan haha.
Might be just me but Owen I feel like Owen looked way more relaxed in his more bit then the snaffle. Also I feel like he found the distances better. He’s so cute and him and Claire look so good together! Much love ❤️

Wow, seeing Silvio get on him I think just shows how much of a difficult ride Owen can be, and how much work you’ve put into him. You ride him with such finesse and lightness that you make him look easier than he probably is. You’ve done a great job with him!

You can clearly see the chemistry between Claire and Owen ♡ when Silvio rode him he seemed very unhappy and bold, but as soon as Claire hopped back on he yeilded and was himself again.

I love how’s theres all these bays and chestnut color horses and then there’s Owen! Also Silvio didn’t start off good with Owen as he did knock down poles, but by the end he got a bit better with Owen but he doesn’t know Owen’s whole story. Great vid!

I always love watching my trainer or something more experienced ride my horse! I find it super interesting. Can I ask what your normal jumping bit is currently for him? You can definitely tell height/scope will not be his problem, he made it look so easy!

My horse (is 14.3-15) and she rushes small jumps because she doesn't have to think that hard out them, but is much better when we get past the 2.6 marker, it kinda looks like own does the same thing. What a wonderful horse you have.

Ive ridden a horse exactly like owen and she is ridden with a hackamore which personally I’m not a huge fan of 😐🤷🏻♀️ but you and Owen are definitely gonna go places and I wish you both the bestest of luck and can’t wait to see what the future holds for you both 😃❤️❤️❤️❤️

Obviously I wasn't there so I don't know for sure but the bit he's normally in looks like a D ring snaffle, the difference was the noseband (from the grackle to the cavesson)

I think the trainer did a great job! Owen looks like he likes to throw his head up and get strung out towards the fence but Silvio holds him back and makes him think. He knocked poles over, yes, but the second time they went through the combination, Owen waited and was much better towards the jumps.
