I’ve come from the perspective of believing that men and women don’t need to have different roles in society, but lately I’m learning we actually kinda do. The most important gender-specific role a man has is to empower and uplift women. To put in the extra work that makes up for all the extra work that women do every day. To recognize the power and privileges we are given by virtue of being men, and use that power to further empower the other genders. To protect women, make those late-night runs so they don’t have to, to listen to women’s stories and recognize they will have experiences in life that we will never have, to do our best to understand even if we will never experience it ourselves. There’s so much more that the genders have in common than they have different; but the experience of being a man in this world is so different from the experience of being a woman. That’s why we have to have different roles. Men need to do more to shift the power towards equality.
