The VOICE, The DRUMMER, The LEGEND!! Along with Richard’s fabulous arrangements and Karen’s etheric pitch perfect voice they were / are magnificent and timeless.
The most amazing thing was singing was her second calling. Her first was drumming. Look up her drum solos and be simply blown away. Outstanding musician and her brother Richard was not only a great singer and keyboardist but also a master arranger.
(For me) the best crystal clear contralto in pop genre ever recorded.Couldn't exist a more ideal standalone vocal sound to my ears in that field.Karen is a rare example of a standalone voice who wouldn't even need backing vocals to make even an average song sounding superior.Respect.
Thank you for cherishing our beloved Karen and Richard carpenter. They were part of the fabric of life in the 70s , always on the radio and part of so many memories of that simpler sweeter time.
Karen recorded this song in one take reading the kyrics written on a napkin no less. She was known as One take at the studio. Flawless hauntingly beautiful voice that always gave me chills. One of the greatest losses to the music world. RIP KC!
😅A rare voice from the 1970s. Credit to Richard, her brother, for great arrangements as well as A&M Records (Herb Alpert) for musicians, orchestration and support.
@ I do the same thing!!! She shined so bright in my eyes and I fell in love the first time I heard her sing!!! I felt her emotions, her special gift 🎁 💝 and I believe everyone who knows her voice, loves her 🥰
The oboist is Earl Dumler. He was a top studio musician in LA for years, also played oboe for the Los Angeles Opera. He played on many Carpenters songs, was a big part of their sound.
Love how she sings that one word "Lone-li-ness" and then "Wait" and continues without taking a breath. Amazing! What a shame to lose that ANGELIC voice and talent at such a young age. So Sad. Richard was also very talented. He conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and arranged it with Karen's marvelous performance. Why you don't see many of the instruments you hear in the video. I love those French Horns! When Karen drops her head at the end I have to fight back the tears. Was lucky to grow up with their wonderful music. As a teenager, I loved such a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. AND WAS A SUPERB DRUMMER! WOW! Couple of other Carpenters songs written by the great Leon Russell I think you would like are "Song For You" and "This Masquerade". My favorite. Another really nice genuinely heartfelt reaction by you. Nice job!
She played drums with the group. But when they got more popular they brought her out from behind the drums. Although she always felt more comfortable back there drumming. She's a really great drummer. Watch one of those videos.
A song about a groupie who met her rockstar guitarist and fell in love with him...wanting and waiting and pining to be with him again, and this is amplified by hearing him on the radio....as this song was titled GROUPIE about a female groupie in love with a Rock Star
This song was originally recorded in 1971 for their 3 studio album "Carpenters" Karen Carpenter - vocals, drums, Richard Carpenter - arranger, piano, harpsichord, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ, vocals, orchestration, Hal Blaine - drums, Jim Horn - reeds. Earl Dumler - oboe on "For All We Know", Bob Messenger - bass, reeds, Tommy Morgan - harmonica on "Rainy Days and Mondays", Joe Osborn - bass, Doug Strawn - reeds. Karens vocals were done in one take as she read the lyrics from a napkin where Richard had written them. In 2018 (35 years after Karen's death) Richard took the master to London and added the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to the master which he producer, arranger and conducted. The album is called “Carpenters With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra."
All harmonies on the recordings were sun by Richard and Karen in layered tracks...the voices matched perfectly being all in the family. The band would sing the backup vocals live in concerts though.
Karen’s voice always brings chills to me. So good and always on pitch. I don’t know if anyone feels this way but, there is a wholesomeness to the Carpenters music and her voice that makes it unique.
The carpenters were just a force of nature way back when. And the voice on that woman, well there’s not much better. And someone already answered that that instrument was an oboe, I was pretty sure that’s what it was, at the blind school I went to, they would teach us how instruments sounded and what instruments they were. But I have since forgotten quite a few of them.
- As others have noted, the sweet sounding wind instrument is the OBOE (my favorite) - 'DOUBLE REED', BTW. - My quick (unvetted) research confirms this, and identifies EARLE DUMLER as the musician. - Richard Carpenter's arrangement always contributes to the wonderful impression/expression of their songs
Such a beautiful young woman and beautiful voice. Multi-talented. Such a tragic story. RIP. But we have her music to enjoy. She played the drums in “Close to You” is beautiful as well 😊
This is one of Richard Carpenter's remixes of his original arrangement for the song. In reason years, he produced a new album which superimposed the philharmonic.
The late-great Leon Russell co-wrote this song with Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie and friends). It has been covered by several renowned artists.
Thanks for mentioning Leon and Bonnie. Bonnie's vesion, as well as Rita Coolidge's version for the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen live concert album, have much more feeling that this version. It's too bad not many people are aware of them, both versions are amazing!
As someone previously mentioned, the instrument was an oboe. It's the same size as a clarinet but it has a double reed as opposed to a single reed on the clarinet. The double reed gives it a more nasal sound, haunting and beautiful. The other double reed instrument is the bassoon which is much larger and lower pitched.
Saeed, thank you so much for reacting to the legendary Carpenters. When you first hear the Carpenters, especially Karen's sublime vocals, people are astonished. The purity and emotional quality of her voice, multi-octave range, incredible breath control, etc. are staggering. Add Richard Carpenter's brilliance as a musician and arranger, and you have something that is rare and timeless.
Nice reaction. Karen's voice is legendary but Richard was the genius that made their music special. His special talent as a writer was the instrumentation he chose. He was the leader of the band of which she was the drummer who could sing.
My favorite recording of this song is by Bette Midler, before The Carpenters. Richard Carpenter saw Bette perform it on The Tonight Show and imagined a different arrangement arrangement for them. Bette emphasizes the lyrics more.
She had a beautiful voice. ❤ It's so sad that she suffered from an eating disorder anorexia, that led to other health issues that shortened her life. Her death led to research of eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
Saeed the instrument you mentioned is the oboe the Carpenters had really beautiful orchestration in their songs so much of this thanks to Richard. Love your open mind and noble heart makes for very genuine and fun reactions. Kudos 🎉 and continued success 👏
@@SaeedReacts. The original title was Groupie, I believe. But that really didn't fit with the Carpenters' image. And they changed 'sleep with you' to 'be with you.'

I stay away from the Carpenters because of her tragic life, it makes me cry every time. Usually I could take them or leave them before her death but one day I was hitch-hiking from Barstow, Calif. to Phoenix, Az. during the on coming of a desert storm which lit up the whole desert. I took over driving and she fell asleep on my shoulder and their greatest hit tape played over and over and the combination of the warm Summer rain and flashing light show extending the total distance of the desert remains in my mind as clear today as it did 50 years ago. Hi Saeed, thank you for your lovely reaction to another song sung beautifully by Karen Carpenter. She has a really lovely rich voice, one of a kind! The instrument you were asking about is an oboe. It’s a beautiful sound! There is a song called Whiter Shade of Pale, by Procol Harum, and there’s a beautiful live version of it that has a lovely oboe solo in the instrumental opening of the song. This live version was done in Denmark, in 2006, with a full orchestra and choir accompanying the band! The original song came out in 1967, and I’ve loved it ever since then. I would highly recommend that you check it out!🥰 Thanks again for another wonderful reaction!💗
Karen is easily equal to the best female singers of all time. She is able to make you happy whether you are or not. So soothing and smooth and instantly recognisable. I could listen to her all day.
Thank you so much for your reaction and interpretation of Superstar. Many say the song was about a groupie( what 5hey call the females that got together with the band, maybe a one night stand where she fell in love or was obsessed with the superstar. In 1994, in recognition of the way I felt in the morning and the upcoming anniversary of the triumph over fascism, I wrote a song, and several weeks after its premier, I improvised an introductory section borrowed from the opening lines of this. I played it that way thereafter, and recorded it for a diverse compilation of artists connected with Toronto's Kensington Market in 1999. My biggest hit. ✌🏼😂
Back in the Day on Saturday when all the Kids were out of school the movie theaters played 2 movies back to back. She was talking about falling in love during the first show
She's actually talking about falling in love with the performer during a live performance at his first set as many musicians in some clubs and venues will do a second set later in the evening
Carpenters also sang a version of another Leon Russell song. "A song for you". One of the most beautiful love songs ever made. Even though I prefer the original, the Carpenters did a beautiful job. Donny Hathaway's version is also magnificent! ❤
You're misunderstanding the song. She DID know him and they had a "relationship" and she fell in love with him but he's a superstar musician on the road and even though he told her he loves her and that he would be back, he has no plans committing to a relationship.
She has my vote as best female vocalist of all time.
Absolutely!!!
Yes!!!🙌 she gets my vote too 🥰🤩
She's on my list, along with Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt. Who's first depends on my mood.
Have you heard of Linda Ronstadt? They are equals.
Mine as well, always has been, always will be...
The irony of these lyrics is that they are sung by a Superstar. ❤️
Great point 😃
Karen Carpenter, the most beautiful voice in the world.
I think that instrument you are talking about is an oboe. I love your reactions. I also love the Carpenters. I have all their LP's.
I believe you are right, but I'm not sure.
indeed, it is an oboe.
Oboe or Clarinet.........Putting my money on Clarinet. Unsure if Alto, Bass or Contralto.
I was lucky enough to see them in concert such a long time ago...sigh.
Yep, that is an oboe. There's also some great French horn in this.

Now THAT'S breath control. What a great singer. A perfect alto.
Actually a three-octave contralto, which is the statistically rarest of all singing voices. She perfect. She sang one take every time
"Goodbye to Love" is one not to miss listening to.
Agree!
Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice. It was so silky, smooth and soft. She was taken too soon. Love your reaction!
Karen had a 3 octave vocal range but she was a contralto, the lowest voice for a female and she had such a rich tone in her lower register
