    I've watched hours and hours of your videos. "That chair could be a weapon or you could sit in it. That's your choice" is the funniest thing I've heard in any of your videos. I actually cried laughing and simultaneously thought about how great of an explanation that was. I wish I lived anywhere near you. My 5 month old puppy just came back from a boarding train and it was a terrible experience. There needs to be more of you in the dog training world. If you ever move to Massachusetts I have your first student (me) waiting for such a great teacher. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos and how much I appreciate your love and understanding of these animals. It's truly amazing. I'm 39. Construction worker. Tattoos. All that. I've been brought to tears watching you work. No joke.

      UA-cam allows people to click like or dislike on videos, if you don't like it why don't you contact youtube and demand the dislike button to be removed. Until then, people still have a choice. With regards to the use of e collars, not all countries and organisations are in agreement. Same here. I also didn’t understand about the prong collar. I ordered it bc I have an 88 lb very strong, 21 mo old, sweet but untrained rescue. Also ordered a slip leash.
      He is a rescue. He wasn’t neutered. I just had that done a week ago.
      I think my male pup is only part GSD, maybe some thing else bc he’s built more straight backed, bigger more powerful jaws & teeth (I’ve had GSDs for decades), a more dome shaped head, has this enormous plume of a tail that nearly drags the ground, & can be a bit more stubborn than GSDs in my experience. I’m older now & only just realized I can’t train him in the same ways I used to train my dogs, so I’ve been watching this podcast to learn other ways, & I’m feeling much better about my chances of making a success of this now.
      He’s definitely convinced me to try his methods, & I’m grateful I found him on UA-cam.

I used to know a trainer who would just shock the dog until it listened and if just ignored it, they would turn it up to max and the dog would just freak out and hate it. Thanks for sharing this. I use an Ecollar to do recall training. Took all of a few days for the puppy to understand the "taps" and the vibrate sensation from the collar. I'm happy with the training since then that my pup has learned. Only thing left is her duty training as a Service Dog. The Ecollar is helpful when I need her to recall and I cannot call her verbally, because I have seizures and sometimes effects my ability to speak properly. She is a year old and does her trained duties very well. Not perfected yet, but we live out away from busy places and she has very little work done in public places, but she handles it very well. Pushing me to the exit when she feels I need to get out of the stressful environment of a public place and the crowds of people.

    My dog trainer recommended watching Tom’s videos. I’ve used the e-collar on another dog I had years ago and it kept him from getting hit by a car. I only had to use it twice and he listened as soon as I picked up the remote. Never had to wear the collar on him again and I could pick up a pager or cordless phone and point it at him and he listened. Without the collar even being on him. People like to judge. There are ways to use an e-collar responsibly. We’ve been doing training with our current dog for a few months. We didn’t just start out with the e-collar. People act like you’re electrocuting them. Mine is set on a 2 or 3. I’ve tested it myself. It barely does anything. I have this because I love my dog and don’t want him to get hurt because he wants to bolt out the door as he knocks me down and go into the road. Some people get frustrated to where they dump them alongside a road or surrender them to a rescue group or humane society which are already full. I commend Tom and dog owners for trying to work through the issues they’re having instead of just giving up.

    • @azuulrl
      @azuulrl 2 роки тому +4

      This is extremely late but hopefully you will still find this helpful; maybe others will find this useful as well. Typically when a dog is introduced to the e-collar and becomes fluent, it is highly likely the dog will be aware of the presence of the collar and it's consequences (good or bad) that pair with it. It is recommended to put away the e-collar after training. If she is still responding the same way, you might have to go back to the basics with e-collar introduction and pair a low level stimulation with your cues and reward the desired behavior. There is no such thing as a broken dog. Edit: You may even have to go back to basic obedience without the e-collar to strengthen your relationship before continuing. Depends on the situation.

    • @DiegoPerez-wt8yr
      @DiegoPerez-wt8yr 3 роки тому +9

      I’m actually a force free, positive reinforcement trainer. There are a lot of us out there who don’t care what other trainers use. If that’s the method that gets them results, sweet! Most good trainers aren’t worried about what others are doing, just improving their own skills. The trainers who get hysterical and are up in arms about trainers who use e collars and prong collars are probably insecure with the results they produce through their methods. I train mastiffs, pitties, Shepard’s, malinois, without the use of positive punishment and have a very successful business, that produces results.
      Just saying don’t lump all positive only trainers into some vegan-esque category 😂

Even If I point it out most don't buy it. E collars should not be sold with out a minimum an hours worth of solid training and that would only be the basics, nor would the hour included how to run the machine, the hour would only be for how to actually actually use it properly on the dog

But maybe a small flashing colored "dot" in the corner of the video might be a better option for visualizing when to "stim".?

      E-collars are forbidden by law, in alot of european countries. Here in Germany it was a big initiative by police dog trainers and the old breeding clubs (100s of years old), that led to this law. It wasnt pushed through by animal rights activists, but by those, who work with dogs on a daily base.
      Even ecollars that spray only water are forbidden by law. So, it has nothing to do with pain..
      In dangerous, stressful situations, an ecollar will never be as strong, as a good relation and a well trained command.
      Unless you have an insensitive dog, ecollars will put stress onto your dog. But you dont want that in dangerous, stessful situations. In Germany, about 75% of all bites are connected to stress.
      There are fines up to 20.000€. Repeated misdoing can even get you in jail.
      It is a bit strange, to see so many german dog breeds (German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Dobermann) that are trained with an ecollar(especially in the US), while ecollars
      are forbidden in Germany, itself..
      Sorry for my bad english..

      @@dunjak111 Man stfu, would you rather have an aggressive dog kill a child or have it trained with an e collar. Positive reinforcement won't take aggression out of a dog, also it doesn't hurt them. A normal collar can do damage just the same as anything else used wrongly.

    • @dunjak111
      @dunjak111 3 роки тому

      @@bbycherub2420 Pfff. Not even military dog trainers use ecollars.
      You may not put an ecollar, even on a cow. Its forbidden, by law..
      There is just no need for ecollars.
      Aggressive dogs, that injured, or killed humans, or other dogs, are send to resocialization camps. There, they get resocialized, without ecollars.
      While every 8th household owns a dog, the last time a dog had to be put down by the authorities, was in 2018.
      So, its working out just fine without ecollars.
      Everybody has practical experience.
      To become a licenced trainer in Germany, you need to study for 2-3 years at an university, just to obtain the theological knowledge.
      Ecollars dont even fill a week.
      Maybe it is easier to handle "problem-dogs" with ecollars. But ecollars dont solve the dogs problem.
      It needs some theoretical knowledge to find out, why a dog is aggressive and how to adress the problem.
      Ecollars dont take away stress. They add stress. That has been prooven in alot of european studies..

    I adopted an 8-month-old Malinois about a month ago, so he's 9 months old now, who was likely never properly trained by his previous owners. Trying to teach him has been incredibly frustrating, because he can't even pay attention to me for more than five seconds; although that's still an improvement from the beginning, when I couldn't even get his attention unless I yank him on his ass and drag it all the way back.
    I felt I had no other choice, so I ordered an e-collar online and it's bound to arrive any day now. I truly hope it helps me refine his recall and focus, so I can properly start training him and teaching him what he can and can't do around the yard just so I don't have to keep him cooped up in his kennel all day. I also hope it'll be an effective way to stop him from jumping on people; he's so big, it's impossible to teach him using the other methods from other videos.

      @@kone6078 I have to say that make sure you buy a good collar, and treat it as an investment.
      I guess e-collars are stupid expensive in my country; I bought one that was relatively pricey by my location's standards, but absolute cheapo compared to the ones I've seen recommended.
      Even at level 1, the shock function turned out to be too strong as a training aid. Fortunately, it has a vibration option, but that's too light to be used for escape training--however, it is enough to get his attention, so I built off that to strengthen his focus on me. In a controlled environment, his focus on me is great now. His recall has also greatly improved.
      When outside, the vibration is _usually_ enough to catch his attention when I let him off-leash for playtime. If he gets particularly interested in something or someone however, I have to resort to giving him a quick shock--which I generally try to reserve as an absolute last resort, like when he jumps on someone. It does seem to work as a good aversive, as he jumps on people far less.
      As a whole, use is more limited than I'd like even though I managed to make it work a bit. I definitely recommend investing in a very good collar.

      @@kone6078 No, I'm from The Philippines. The brand is Digoo, and I've never heard of it before.
      Unfortunately, I don't think I can offer you any help if your dog is straight up averse to the "low-impact" functions. I guess I'm fortunate enough that my dog's not by most anything, even fireworks, so long as it's not a person.
      A very low shock setting _might_ work, since it could be less jarring to the senses. Just be sure level 1 is weak enough; maybe try it on your non-dominant arm. That's how I found out mine is too strong.

    One dog in the study continued to react as if being shocked during training even though the last time it had received an actual shock was a year and a half before! This certainly debunks the argument that the effects of shock collars are temporary and easily forgotten by the dog.

My problem with her is she goes crazy when she is let outside or out of the car when we get home, she jumps in circles in mid air then takes off running. She will not stop running around the house. We have a huge yard and she will run around it about 7 times without stopping. She was running so fast one day she broadside one of our other dogs and injured the other dog's hip. I would like for her to come to me when she's in this crazy state of mind so that others do not get injured if she runs into them or a solid object. She is not aggressive just excited and brief periods of being crazy

What I liked was that the beep (audible) to be used as a reward (like good boy/girl) and vibrate was a warning and the "punishment" was the stimuate (not that shock as a to be used as a punishment but i'm using it as brevity for my comment. • @rainaquelle365
      @rainaquelle365 3 роки тому

      Sorry, but you need to spend a bit more and get a collar that has different levels of stimulation. If it only has "shock" then it should not be used for training - nor on dogs either for that matter. It is the equivalent of getting an old baby crib before they had the standard slat sizes - you know - the one that prevents babies from putting their heads through the openings and getting stuck! Tom's mentioned in other videos when to use vibrate. It sounds like he uses it very rarely - perhaps when a dog has aggression issues and has started lunging. It is better if you catch them before they start "building" with a lower level. Good luck!

I have a 11/2 yo GS that I use a prong on, but he is not always consistent with commands outside. I bought the dogtra e collar and want to know if I should use both until he learns how to follow commands with it. He weighs almost as much as me and is sometimes hard to handle without the prong, especially with squirrels, LOL. I also need some advice on how to stop his barking when he meets a new person. He's very social and greets everyone this way the first time. I definitely know his body language when it's someone he doesn't like and can avoid that situation. I have been dealing with approach with other dogs successfully by redirecting in opposite direction. It's not always possible with "humans" immediately. Thanks for all you do, you're truly amazing.
