  • Get more our of your Festool, or Makita, guide rail! I received some DM's in regards to our DomStop500™ so I thought I'd make a video on our set up jig. First off...this demo would not be possible without Kirk Frei. I personally do not own a DF500 but he was kind enough to lend me his for this demo. With that being said...if I failed to go over anything in this demo, or you'd like to know more about this set up jig...please leave your comments, or questions, down below. Either Al or myself will respond to you in a timely manner. Thanks for watching.

    How did this jig come about? I had someone reach out to me on Facebook after we released the FS-StoryKit, those little green stops you see in the video, and they wanted to have a jig that would essentially combine 2 of our FS-StoryStops into one. He wanted something that would cradle the Domino. So he gave me the measurements of the face and the rest is history. You could just as easily use the StoryStops like I did in the video but...this didn't work half bad if I do say so myself.
    - - - - -
    Voiceovers:
    I started off by throwing in some of our 12mmDogFences on my MFT to act as a reference of the panel. You could just as easily use dogs but I went this route instead. With the center line of the panel under my guide rail…I pulled a reference mark to the side of the guide rail using my Paolini Pocket rule and a pencil. That’ll be used for positioning the DomStop later on.
    Next I slid 2 of our StoryStops and the DomStop into the guide rail and locked them down. It doesn’t matter where they’re locked down now…just as long as you can use the face of the stops to reference the line you drew on your panel when you go to line it up.
    With the stops locked down…move the panel so the reference line on it lines up with the face of the stops. Be sure to keep your panel against your supports when you’re doing this too.
    With that done…I unlocked all the stops, re-positioned the DomStop so the reference line on it and the guide rail were lined up to each other and locked it in place. I then positioned the domino on one side of the DomStop, moved a StoryStop to the side of the Domino, and locked it down. I then repeated that process on the other side.
    Now here’s how this set up looks before I cut the actual mortises into this panel. You can see the face of the stops are in line with our reference mark on our panel…which is exactly what you want to see.
    You can see with the stop removed how the face of the domino is flush against the guide rail and this edge here is on our reference line. That’s a reference for where the center of our mortise will go. Looks like it’ll be cut right on that line but…there’s only one way to find out.
    Now I wanted to give you a sense of how long this actually took me so after that last row was cut…I flipped this piece over, added those same lines, and without moving the stops I made 12 mortises straight through. It’s not a race but I just wanted to see how quick a novice domino user could accomplish this task.

      Oh yeah. Not having something that attaches to your Domino is huge benefit too. It's cumbersome enough with a 27mm hose and power chord on it during use anyways. That's just the newbie Domino user in me probably.

    Do you have a video showing how to make the matching cuts in the shelf?

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому

      No I do not. I just transfer the measurements on the ‘side panel’ to the end of the piece I’ll mate to it. It’s really easy. Plus when I do that I’ll set the mating piece to the medium setting so I don’t have to be extremely accurate when I transfer the measurements…if that makes sense.

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому

      Check out our Etsy store for the MortiseMarker. I think you’ll find that useful for findings and transferring the layout for mortises from the middle, or edge, of your work piece.

  • @michael.schuler
    @michael.schuler 3 роки тому +1

    Have you developed a simple way to use the guide rail (set as story stick) to mortise the matching locations in the edge of the partition or shelf that will mate with the mortises you cut mid-panel?

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  3 роки тому

      From Al….
      That is the purpose of setting and using the end stops. You set them to the edge of the panel, then place the guide rail on the end above. With the fence set flush, it should register right into the DomStop.

    • @michael.schuler

      @@CPBuilds Thx. I think I understand now. But let me ask my question a different way: if I lay out my mortises with centerline on the panel, can I see the DF 500 hairline cursor to place the machine where I want it and then set the stops against the machine, or do I need to do the layout AFTER locating the machine? (Maybe all this will be clear once I have your jig in hand...)

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  3 роки тому

      From Al…again :)
      There are additional cursors built in to the DomStops that allow you to set up your layouts before the machine ever touches the work, but you can do it either way.

      @@michael.schuler did you get the jig? Because I certainly don't understand how I would transfer the mortises to the edge of the other piece of wood.

    Now how do I align the domino slots on the shelf panel with what you just cut?

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому

      I would measure where you put the slots on the side panel and transfer the measurements to the end of the shelf. Normally I would just use the pins on the domino for the left and right side of the panel. Only measurement id concern myself with is the center. I would make a larger mortise on either the side panel or shelf just so you have some wiggle room when putting it together. I did that for a shelf I built my wife and it worked really well. Does that answer your question?? If not please let me know.

    • @saiiiiiii1
      @saiiiiiii1 2 роки тому

      @@CPBuilds but that's what you would do without any jig? I don't understand what the jig makes easier then.

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому +1

      @@saiiiiiii1 the jig allows you to use your MFT, or guide rail, for repeat mortises on your side panel. You set the stops up once and just move the panel to where you want the mortises to be.

    • @saiiiiiii1
      @saiiiiiii1 2 роки тому +1

      @@CPBuilds Ok now I get it, thanks.

  • @saiiiiiii1
    @saiiiiiii1 2 роки тому

    There is no way of transferring the mortises I cut with the story stops to the edge of the vertical piece of wood that connects with it, right? The purpose of the domstop is just to have the same distances on the flat part of the panel if I have multiple rows? Sorry for not knowing the exact terms, English is not my first language. Hope you still understand.

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому

      You don’t, we’ll you could, just lock in the stops wherever your guide rail and plunge away. If you want to have two mating pieces then you’ll need to layout where you want your mortises and place a stop accordingly on you guide rail for repeat cuts. Just transfer the measurements you used to lay out the panel to your end piece. I’d recommend using the medium setting to give you a little wiggle room. Hope that makes sense.

    • @saiiiiiii1
      @saiiiiiii1 2 роки тому

      @@CPBuilds What if you made a 2 piece version of the end stops. You add a T-groove to the Storystop, so you can convert it to an endstop if you're done drilling your holes on top of the workpiece. With the attachable piece you can now butt up the rail against the edge of your piece of wood that needs to be drilled at the edges. There's no more measuring or inconsistencies involed. Am I forgetting something here or would this actually solve the problem of needing to measure and mark up the edge holes?

    • @CPBuilds
      @CPBuilds  2 роки тому

      Not sure really. I typically use a tape measure and a pencil to put the same measurements on the edge piece as I do the side panel. It really is that easy. I mean if you throw stops on a guide rail where ever then I can see how that might be an issue but the method I use…I don’t have any problems.

    I like the idea, but referencing the center of the mortises is not as effective or efficient as referencing from the bottom of the domino. It makes it way easier with layout and when mortising the shelf. Too much math is involved when going off the center of the mortise.

    • @AlAmantea
      @AlAmantea 3 роки тому +3

      Hey Ben, thanks for comments! We appreciate you taking the time to respond.
      The back lip of all of our StoryStops, and the back lip of the DomStop, are at the same reference point as the bottom plate of the Domino, so you have the flexibility of doing it both ways with our jig!
      I do find that referencing from center during layout is simpler for me, and eliminates the need to "keep track" of which way the shelves need to sit in the project. I use metric for my builds mostly, so it's simple to get to halfway marks.
      All you'd need to do is to line up the "bottom reference line" with the back of the jig, and your setup will be perfect.
