  • A legendary conductor: Arturo Toscanini
    A legendary tenor: Jan Peerce
And a shocking example of censorship.
In 1944, to honor the Allied victory in Italy, the great Arturo Toscanini--a refugee from Fascisim in his home country--decided to conduct a performance of Verdi's "Hymn of the Nations". "Hymn" is a composition that Verdi orginally built around the national anthems of Britain, France, and Italy. In order to honor all four of the major Allies, Toscanini decided to add "The Star Spangled Banner" for the U.S. and "The Internationale" for the Soviet Union. The music was performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra, with the Westminister Choir and the great tenor Jan Peerce as soloist; conducted by Toscanini.
In the early 50's, at the height of the Red Scare, censors removed the portion of this performance that featured the Internationale.
The great actor Burgess Meredith, who narrates the beginning of this program, was later on the Hollywood Blacklist.
For years this piece of film was considered lost. But in the 1980s the Library of Congress restored the censored clip, with its rousing rendition of "The Internationale". So enjoy the magnificent tenor voice of Jan Peerce, and the masterful conducting of Arturo Toscanini.

How often do you get to hear the Internationale and the Star-Spangled Banner PERFORMED ONE AFTER THE OTHER?!?

It's a testament to the free Internet that such censorship would hardly be possible today.

Toscanini made a miracle out of music with the "Hymn" The best of Peerce I ever heard.........What a thrill to have anything to do with this at all........you get the feeling this whole piece was an inspiration, from the chorus to the symbol player. Toscanini conducts like he is obsessed and maybe he was, but now I have memories.........thank you, Arturo

I have listened to this over 1000 times (everyday for 3 years) and I still tear up.......maybe I am badly in need of a strong support group......lol........I find this piece so special and I fully appreciate the work Toscanini did to Verdi's work to make it relevant in '44. Does anyone know how much they had to practice before airing?

Censorship at its most disturbing use.
    THANK YOU.

feel like I am in a dream ... the effortless dreamy nature of his voice, despite its mahogany like vibrance ... and the conductor, only Maestro T himself ... sat 8 rows back with my dear ma' at age 14, Palacio de las Bellas Artes ... huge stage, huge piano, short smiling gnome ... all was incongruity ... then Peerce began to sing ...

You should hear the first part of this clip. There begins the 'Hymn of the Nations' by Verdi. You will find there also the story behind this piece.

Actually, it was changed to the present tune and old Soviet lyrics in 1944. Before that, it had been the Internationale, so, AT got it right, when he wrote it.

    Вставай проклятьем заклейменный
    /Arrive, ye marked with a curse/
    Весь мир голодных и рабов
/The starving and the slaves of the world/

Can someone PLEASE tell me what the piece is that begins at 1:37? It recurs again before the Internationale. It's lovely, and I've looked everywhere for it and can't seem to find it.

I think it's part of Verdi's "Hymn of the Nations", but that's just a guess.
I'm by no means an expert on Italian music, so if anyone out there wants to volunteer any info, please do!!!
Also would like to know the English translation to the lyrics.

Point of interest!....does anyone know how much practice there was for this performance? How many times was it performed?......I see only the orchestra had the music in front of them, while the chorus and Peerce and Toscanini did not.....He conducted like he was in one of his famous rehersalsl (Where the real work lies)....hard to find the genius that animated in any of his other works....maybe because he had actually composed part of it .I feel fortunate to have heard and felt this. ARTURO!!

In those days, you did pretty often. Except dear old AT got it wrong. What he wanted to perform was the Soviet national anthem, and he did not know that since 1937 it had been changed to the tune that is still Russia's anthem today.
