Durban Surfski Paddle with Wayne from Dusk to Dawn2Dusk Adventures
Durban is on of the most unique paddling locations that is effected by swell more anywhere I have paddled. There are small element of swell in places like Mauritius and Hawaii but Durban seams to hold more swell when the wind isn't blowing vs its counterpart.
On Sunday and Monday we had a solid 2 days of NE trade wind and what was left behind on Tuesday was pure left over swell. The wind had died completely and in most places this would mean flatter conditions but not here.
We had Wayne out from Dubai to come paddle with us and we had a huge amount of fun chasing swell in the Durban's Bay, with some outstanding runs. We did 4 loops of the bay out into the swell and lining up outside Limestone reef to run towards addington and here is some footage from just 1 of the 4 loops.
What people don't realise when they look at the weather reports from Durban is that is isn't the most wind town, well it doesn't have to blow hard to get cooking downwind if the swell is running. The swell and wind combined make for big technical downwinds and the perfect place to hold both the national champs this year and then world champs in 2025.
What make Durban paddlers a little different is the same swell that creates great downwind, also creates solid surf. Every entry and exit through breaking waves which most of the world would think are crazy, but to those from Durban, its not just the norm, its playing homage to the sports history, tradition and heritage, surf is part of surfski here, and we love it.
