Hohenerpfingen Castle 🇩🇪, probably built in the 12th century, is located high above the Erpftal valley in the Swabian Alb (Germany). In the 14th century, its owners are drawn into the conflict between the competing noble families of Teck and von Württemberg, which had devastating consequences.
We tell their fascinating history in 4 minutes.

Hohenerpfingen Castle, which is also called Schnaterete Castle, is located in the forest above the Erpftal. It can be reached via a hiking trail. When exploring the area, caution is advised. The ruins of the castle stand directly on a rocky slope.
The ruins of the residential tower and the moats cut into the rock are still preserved. In addition, some other remains of the walls can be seen. On a small plateau opposite the tower there was probably once the outer castle, of which, however, nothing has been preserved. It is possible that it was connected to the tower by a bridge.
Little is known about the beginnings of the castle. On the basis of ceramic findings, it is assumed that it was built in the middle of the 12th century. At that time it was probably the seat of the Lords of Erpfingen. In 1304 a Christine von Erpfingen is mentioned in the written sources. At that time she was a nun in the monastery of Stetten and probably the last of the family.
The castle does not become tangible again until the middle of the 14th century. In the meantime it is owned by the Lords of Salmendingen. Johann von Salmendingen, together with his sons Hans and Heinz, settles down at Hohenerpfingen Castle with the manor Stollenhof and Niederhofen.
In 1350 Agate von Salmendingen marries Burkhart von Mansberg, which was to be the family's undoing. Since the Mansbergs were in the service of the Dukes of Teck, who competed with the Counts of Württemberg, the Salmendingen family soon found themselves between the fronts. There were bloody and expensive disputes in the region.
In 1388, Heinz von Salmendingen finally had to sell all the family's possessions to Fritz Kempf von Pfullingen. Only the castle could he keep.
Barely three decades later, however, it was already abandoned and there was only talk of a ruin.. The Pfullingers now also bought it.
In 1487 Hohenerpfingen came into the possession of the Württemberger. Apparently they sold it again, because around 1800 the ruins belonged to the municipality of Erpfingen. They sold the tower and the surrounding area to Count Wilhelm von Württemberg. He wanted to have a romantic knight's castle built there for one of his sons. However, the project never came to fruition.
Today, the castle ruins still belong to the House of Württemberg.
In 1988, restoration measures were carried out on the castle.

It took Otto von Bismarck to finally form Germany into a republic in 1871, Before this, there were bloody territorial disputes that led to castles and war lords.

Absolutely correct. People tend to forget that many states have only existed in their current form for 100 - 200 years. Also Switzerland exists, as it is today, only since 1848. :)
