Spangenberg Castle is located high above the Elmstein Valley not far from the settlement of Erfenstein.
According to legend, there was once a connecting bridge made of leather between Spangenberg and Erfenstein Castle on the opposite side of the valley. This bridge is said to have been built by two good friends who were the lords of the two castles. They visited each other regularly, often ate and drank together. But one day they got into a quarrel. When the Erfenstein, enraged, rushed across the bridge to get his sword, the Spangenberg cut the leather bridge and the Erfenstein fell into the depths.
How much truth is there in the legend? More about that later.
It is not possible to say exactly when and by whom Spangenberg Castle was built. However, it was probably built in the course of the 11th century.
In the year 1100, the castle came into the possession of the High Diocese of Speyer. Supposedly it was a donation of the Bishop of Speyer Johannes I.
Around 1317, knight Diether Zoller received the castle together with the surrounding estates as a fief. In addition, he received 300 pounds Heller for structural measures on the castle complex, which was probably still very small at that time. This was a lot of money at that time. It can be assumed that the castle was greatly expanded in the following years. It was the beginning of its heyday.
In 1385 the Jewish citizen Kaufmann from Speyer was enfeoffed with the castle for 6 years. Presumably, the bishop of the high diocese had debts with him.
Other lords of the castle in the following decades included Gerhard von Dahlheim, Eberhard von Sickingen and Heinrich von Remchingen.
Let us return to the legend about the leather bridge. This probably originated from the following events:
In 1470, the neighboring Erfenstein Castle was destroyed in the course of the Weissenburg feud between Elector Friedrich I and the Duke of Zweibrück, Ludwig the Black. Its owners, the Counts of Leiningen, then attacked Spangenberg Castle, leaving behind a scene of destruction.
But what about the bridge? It probably never existed and symbolizes the friendly relationship between the lords of Spangenberg and Erfenstein.
From a technical point of view, a bridge made of a soft, sagging material like leather would not have been possible. The castles are 65 to 70 meters above the valley, which is too low at a distance of 300 meters.
10 years later the castle, which had now become a ruin, was lent to Knight Engelhard von Niepperg. He undertook to rebuild the castle. With him the feudal tradition came to an end.
Around 1505, Bishop Philipp had a mare yard built near the castle. From then on Spangenberg served as the residence of the Stutmeister.
In 1618 the Thirty Years' War broke out. It heralded the downfall of Spangenberg Castle. In 1621 it was severely damaged in battles and plundered by soldiers. The war, which lasted until 1648, claimed many victims and brought great hardship to the population of the region.
In the course of the Palatine War of Succession, the castle was finally destroyed around 1688.
In the 1920s and 70s, the castle was extensively renovated and partially restored.
Today it is a popular hiking and excursion destination. By the way, there is also a tavern in the castle, which is run by the local castle association.

Dir auch ein wünderschönes Weihnachtsfest. :)
