  • This is the first video in a series i'm going to call History Walks, this instalment sees me walk the entire length of what was once the Cromford Canal in Derbyshire. The Canal once stretched some 14.5 miles from Cromford in the Derwent Valley to Langley Mill in the Erewash Valley. The 33 minute video documents my journey along this iconic waterway, I traced the original route as closely as possible and show you some of the highlights along the way. I hope you enjoy it :-)

    I was born in Belper in 1966. I moved away with my parents at an early age. I moved back to the area in 1985 & I've been here ever since. I've walked from Cromford to the pipe works, but no further. I never knew so much more still existed of the canel. You inspired me to explore the rest. Thank you 👍😎

    Only just found this video Dean, after deciding to have a look if there were any videos on the Cromford canal. Very enjoyable to watch. I grew up in the Langley Mill area and the canal played a large part in my childhood. There is a group of very active volunteers that have taken responsibility for the stretch between Codnor Park reservoir and the end of that section past Jacksdale. They have done a brilliant job and that section is now a complete joy to walk.

    Dean. Really enjoy your trips. This one is of extra special interest to me. Many year ago 70 to 75 yrs. I used to walk from Sandiacre along the canals that link together and make an enjoyable route to Matlock. I used to sleep in the woods around
    Black Rocks overnight and walk back home Sunday . I did this frequently over three or four years until my army service
    put a stop to my weekend trips. Thanks for the memories. Waldo.

    Hi Dean, your video's are keeping me well entertained at night instead of mind numbing television🤣 This one was particularly interesting as it's very local to me as I live in Heanor. Just one to bear in mind, you could go slightly of course if you do this route again and visit the remains of the old Codnor Castle, not that far from Golden Valley and the old Newlands inn. Well worth a visit.

      +Gary Mellors Thanks for watching Gary, I’m not a fan of TV either :-) I really enjoyed doing this trek. I’d been researching it for a local history project so couldn’t resist walking it in its entirety. Codnor Castle is on my todo list, the Heritage society there have invited me up to have a look and make a video so must get that done soon. All the best. Dean

      Thanks for watching Rich and thanks for your kind words. I really enjoyed retracing the original route of the canal, I'm fascinated by that period in history and the Arkwright story is something we learned in school. Was great to learn more as an adult and piece it together for a video. Thanks for subscribing, All the best, Dean.

      @DeanRead  10 років тому

      Thanks for watching this video too Nige, I've been fascinated by the Canal for a while now so I had tried to learn as much as possible and thankfully have relatives who can remember those days.... Not the 1800's :-) but they can remember the canal in its original form, going inside the tunnels and also ones that worked at Butterley Engineering. I've been quite fortunate in my quest to learn more thanks to their knowledge. Still by no means 100% with the facts but I tried to include as much as poss in the vid.

    Hi Dean. Very good video. At 29min where you were wondering if it was a stretch of canal, the actual canal turns left at the stile and you can still see the abutments to the old aquaduct where it crossed the Erewash. When you are approx. 50yds from Stoney Lane, you can see the walls of the old Limekiln lock. Also the section from Pottery lock to where the canal ends, your comment, oh dear was quite right back then but, I started a volunteer group approx. 3 yrs ago and you would now be startled at the difference. Check out our vid on here, it's Cromford Canal and Codnor Park res sponsored walk. We are now nearing the completion of the restoration of the bridge mentioned.

      +Wayne Haycock thank you for watching and for your kind words Wayne. I love this period in history. The names and stories from the Cromford Canal are intertwined in the local area, it's amazing how often the names resurface elsewhere. I really should do more of this style of video. Thanks for watching, all the best. Dean

    hi, great video, but I am sure there is a tunnel near the old Stoneyford Lodge, about 3 miles from Langley Mill , I haven't been there for about 30 years though, hope this helps you find more forgotten parts of the canal.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  7 років тому

      +cadburys club ooh, I'll have to go and have a look for the tunnel. I followed the Canal as closely as I could between Ironville and Langley Mill but I know I've missed some parts due to the A610. Thanks for watching

    wow great video, I went up there last week but there was road works so couldn't find where to park. I wanted to go and try and photograph the water voles and possibly dippers if they are there. I will have to try again soon as it was a wasted journey but dropped into belper afterwards

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  10 років тому

      The roadworks had gone when I drove through on Friday, they were still there on Thursday when I did this walk but I managed to get in as I was coming from the Crich direction. Thanks for watching, it is a stunning area which I love learning about.

      Dean Read it was on the Wednesday when I went there. was looking forward to having a good day out with my camera but I will make another day of it. keep the videos coming its great to see and gives me inspiration to get outdoors more and helps give me ideas. like this video you have shared when I do actually go to cromford I will now be able to recognise places and it will help me a lot. did you see any water voles?

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  7 років тому +1

      +paul holmes Sadly not Paul, you can get part of the way down but would struggle in the section from Fritchley to Ambergate as it's over fields and there are gates etc. You could just do a road section around the corner near the Hurt Arms at Ambergate and rejoin at the existing Canal path

      +Steven Kohut I found it fascinating to learn more about the local area and explore the canal further, iI'd only walked than the intact stretch at Ambergate in the past. Thanks for watching Steven.

    How many times did you say "welcome back", in that video? Perhaps you should count them, and with a bit of luck you will get as fed up with this annoying habit of yours, as I do, and pack it in. It is not us that goes away, it is you.

      Haha :-) thanks for watching, I apologise if you found it such an ordeal. I made this video about 4 years ago and I’ve improved my amateurish commentary since then, everyone has to start somewhere as you can imagine.
