The DeAngelo Williams situation is so awful, the fact that they would not let a player who lost many loved ones wear some simple eye black to commemorate them is baffling. Shame on the league for that.

The NFL let LaDamian Tomlinson wear a tinted face shield for his whole career. For one reason. Going back to his days at TCU he has a sensitivity to glaring light that would cause migraines. That had been documented for three years before he even enter the league so they gave him an exemption.

One of the things my linebacker couch tried to teach us was to read the quarterback's eyes to know where the ball is going. Or as a DB is you can read the receiver's eyes you will know when the ball is in range and time it to make a play.

Most of these rules are fueled by the NFL's greed, but jewelry ... I've played several different sportsover my lifetime and have never seen a single one that allowed watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, any kind of jewelry at all. Usually because it's a potential injury to themselves or others. Getting scraped by someone's watch or having an earing ripped out ... ouch.

I do believe that a large part of this comes down to limiting player empowerment. By not allowing for individuality in their gear, the players become much less distringuishable from their peers and it become harder for them to stand out, making them seem more interchangeable and less valuable as individual contributors in the scope of team success. This leads to less bargaining power and leverage in contract negotations over time.

  • @MaxPower-vf8kt

All these rules are in the contract players sign. They are paid millions. Every single one of these rules, makes perfect sense. Just because you get away with it for a while, doesn’t make it acceptable. Just because your accessory sends a nice message, doesn’t mean it’s not against the rules. The fact there are so many people breaking these rules, intentionally, and for their own momentary gain, tells you exactly why the rules exist. Imagine how out of control this would get if the NFL just allowed players to do what they want? With all these rules and fines, there are athletes constantly trying to get away with breaking them. It would be out of control so fast and the game would quickly turn into players trying to “one-up” each other, or prioritizing “There brand,” whenever possible.
