From anyone who has read his King Jesus, how does he make the claim that "believing in Jesus" means surrender and could be translated as "trust",?
I just wondering why no translation translate it that way. I've been taught believing is believing a promise.. which involves the trustworthiness of the person making the promise.. and acting upon it. So the direction is different from trusting surrender.
Having not read Scot Mcknights book I dont know how hed answer that question.

I think he misses the point that the older reformed gospel presentation (Edwards puritans) sought to create a liminality in hearers also by preaching the Law first..that God is holy and if we were acceptable to him wed have to have keep the law in thought word and deed then after presented the salvation gospel.. the effect was the same.
I think its that liminality thats the origin.. not modern revivalism

Excellent speech. What about the idea of multiple gospels. For example, Jesus' "gospel of the kingdom" (he speaks of the kingdom at great length) vs Paul's "my gospel" (in which he only mentions the kingdom once)?

the 1:32 seconds into this "teaching" told me all I needed to know about this "topic". Sad - very-very sad. when someone skips over 'history" without understanding the "earth" of it - he is on a mission other than "getting the Gospel Right". this is sad - very sad.

The second he mentioned his association with Bill Hybels, he lost all credibility. Good bible teachers who know the truth of the gospel do not give emergent puppets the time of day because the emergent puppets are here to usher in the kingdom of antichrist.

@@truthseekerKJV no idea what your talking about. Bill Hybels was never "emergent" ..Scot McKnigt was primarily responsible for bringing Bill Hybels to discipline and dismissal over his failings. McKnight critiques emergent. You need to know your facts before you comment in reaction.

I had a hard time listening to his critique of godly leaders sincere presentation of the Gospel. I don't even get what is his point. "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice. Phil 1:18

What method would this man use to "win souls" or at least preach a salvation message? Where in the whole Bible does the term SURRENDER occur? NO! I believe that there are many people IN THE HOUSEHOLD of God who are enemies of the cross of Christ from within.as well as the ones OUTSIDE.Matthew 15:23 I would say that there are people who believed then later lost their faith and became pagans & atheists & heretics & luciferians & Satanists & CIA, Mossaad, MI6 Masons, apostate Jews & mammonists after having believed R still kept saved by grace alone though I despise their works. Even we who R saved & dedicated can @ times be found working 4 the wrong team, need to rebound, get filled with the Spirit get some of the Word and move on. 1 John 1:8-10 U can never judge salvation but you can judge spirituality.& morality.

Generally a good analysis from a biblical scholar.. the focus on Jesus is excellent and 1 Corinthians 15. But a few substantiated claims slippes in.. the illustration he used of his sister having assurance of salvation though having left the christian faith and church attendence.. and the ad hoc reference to believing being a surrender or trusting of ones life to Jesus. ..in regard to assurance of salvation the parable of the sower in Luke implies believing is the means of being saved and the seed that falls on rocky ground represents one who believes though for a while.. perhaps his sister is correct. And why is a lack of assurance and motivator to press in more with discipleship? Surely the Pauls gospel waa subject to that kind of antinomian criticism in Romans 6:1.
In addition if belief is equivalent to trusting ones life to or surrender why dont translator consistently translate pisteo that way..and how can one have assurance of faith is there is always something or some area not fully surrendered or entrusted.. Trust is a part of saving belief but in regard to promises for forgiveness or eternal life.. as in believing what Jesus as Messiah promises to one who believes in him.. which is often the area traditional confessional catholic mainlime 'christians" go astray in the gospel.. they say they believe in Jesus but the content of that faith doesnt trust that Jesus is sufficent for complete forgiveness or eternal life.. which lack of assurance of salvation demonstrates
But those criticisms said if someone tells the gospel as Mcknight explains the gospel itself has the power to bring the response and call to discipleship following.
