India’s possible name change to Bharat. Why now? What does it mean?

- A controversy is making the rounds ahead of the upcoming G20 summit over the name of host country India. The debate centres on a possible shift from "India" to “Bharat”, a word dating back to ancient Hindu scriptures. Questions have arisen over the timing and manner of referencing President Droupadi Murmu as the “President of Bharat” in the G20 dinner invitation. What message is the Bharatiya Janata Party government trying to send the international community? If India goes through with the name change, what will it mean for locals? Brown University’s Mahatma Gandhi Associate Professor of Political Science and International Studies Prerna Singh helps to make sense of the controversy on CNA’s Asia First. Let be clear "Bharat" is also the official name of India in the constitution, so its not an extinct name & govt is trying to revive,it always there,& every Indian refer India as Bharat on daily basis in their own language.
Relax ,govt is not doing anything like that, India & Bharat both will coexist.
It seems they're trying to make a big fuss out of this for some reason. I don't understand why.
govt did this to rattle the opposition they wanted to show people, how the opp is fighting insignificant and truly a daily soap opera. They will not change the name as Bharat and India are the same as per constitution. they wanna use bharat a bit more than it was used to. i see no problem. @@wastelandnerd

Many people in South India refer to India as "Bharath" or "Bharatham" in their native languages. Bharath has a greater significance in South Indian languages compared to North India. The Indian national pledge in most South Indian schools begins with the phrase "Bharath (Bharatham) is my country." A substantial amount of literary works in South India mention India as Bharath. Even the renowned Tamil poet who was born in 1882, known as Bharathiyar, derived his name from Bharath. Similarly, the great Malayalam poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, who wrote in 1917, expressed the significance of the names "Bharatham" and "Keralam."
In 1917, India was not yet a republic, and the state of Kerala did not exist. However, Vallathol Narayana Menon's words ignited a sense of pride among Malayalees and nurtured Indian patriotism. He also referred to India as Bharath.
The term "Bharath" finds its roots in the epic Mahabharata, where it is defined as a land situated between the sea and the snowy mountains, which aligns with India's geographical features-the Himalayas in the north and the Indian Ocean in the south. The Mahabharata war can be interpreted as a war in Greater India, involving kingdoms from South India, North East, Iran, Afghanistan, Northern, and Western India.
The Mahabharata provides genealogical information about South Indian kingdoms, tracing their origins from Turvasu. Maruttan, the sixth-generation king, was succeeded by Bharata and Andhra, born to his second wife Shakuntala. From Andhra's descendants came the Pandya, Chola, Chera, and Kuntala clans, which established the Pandya, Chola, Kerala, and Karnataka regions, respectively.
The Mahabharata itself acknowledges the participation of South Indian kings in the battle of Kurukshetra. For instance, Pandya king Sharngadhwaja, residing near the sea, joined Yudhishthira with a substantial army. Other references in the epic mention the valor of the Pandya and Chera kings in support of the Pandavas.
The Cera (Chera) King Utiyan Ceralatan's story of providing food for the entire army during the Kurukshetra war earned him the title "Perumcorrutiyan" or the "Great Feeder." While the epic doesn't explicitly mention him, it indicates that the battle of Kurukshetra was known to ancient Cera rulers.
Apart from South India, other kingdoms from Bharath also participated in the Mahabharata, such as the Kingdom of Gandhara, present-day Kandahar in Afghanistan.
Furthermore, certain elements of Hinduism, like snake worship, are prevalent in Kerala, Karnataka, and North Eastern states today. These practices have their origins in Myanmar and migrated to South India, resulting in the worship of Naga clans, as seen in Mahabharata references.
The epic Mahabharata also contains early references to the region of Manipur and Nagaland, with characters like Ulupi and Iravan identified as "Manipuris" and "Naga people." The term "Naga" is believed to be linked to the worshippers of snake gods.
Additionally, historical Hindu kingdoms like Kamarupa (350 to 1140 CE) and the Ahom dynasty (1228-1826) from North East India are mentioned in the context of the Mahabharata war, highlighting their people's participation and clans in the epic.
Finally, the Indian Constitution, in Article 1, begins with the statement, "India that is Bharat is a union of states," emphasizing the union of the two names "India" and "Bharat" to represent the nation.
Than Indonesia become Barathnesia 😅
What's the problem with getting rid of legacies from the colonial past?
Colonial past and symbols influence peoples and societies mindsets. I don't think any ex-colony can be truly free and become what they want without their own mindset.
And this is as important as other issues these countries are facing. Of course, people with a colonial mindset will think this is a waste of time and ridiculous.
Why must get rid of such legacies that have helped building up the nation ?
@@benkottoor Sorry Bharat encompasses everyone. It's only your colonial legacy mindset claiming Northeast states and Southern states are somehow out of it! Does the passport of all people regardless of region say Bharat Ganrajya? Yes
Then there is no issue. Keep this Dravidistan or Northeast different mindset out of this.

Regime? That might be too biased. It is true that India is not a healthy democracy at the moment. A healthy democracy is one with a strong opposition that debates, keeps the government accountable and focused on the people. Currently, India doesn't have a strong opposition, an over-confident ruling government who wants to centralise all the power and homogenise the entire population under a single umbrella (ironically following China's footsteps) which for a country as diverse as India is not an easy exercise and is somewhat counter-productive. No country in the world can claim that they have had a perfect democracy at all times. India a rather young democracy is still trying to find its sweet spot.
I was also surprised. I imagine Bharat is not a perfect democracy... but still... Russia is much, much worse and I don't recall them using this kind of vocabulary.

Just watched this video on the potential name change from "India" to "Bharat" and wanted to share some thoughts. Changing the name would mean adjusting its brand identity that has been globally recognized for centuries. Not to mention, the potential legal and diplomatic challenges, as international treaties would need updates. Economically, businesses everywhere would have to adapt, from their marketing to product labeling. Also, let's not forget our vast diaspora who identify strongly with the name "India." Historically, the name has roots going back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans. A change might inadvertently highlight regional or linguistic divides in our diverse nation. Educationally, textbooks and resources globally would require updates. And our tourism sector, especially the "Incredible India" brand, would face a massive rebranding task. While I respect the sentiment behind the proposal, it seems like there's a lot to consider. What does everyone else think? 🤔🌏🇮🇳
I strongly agree with you. Even if people say bharat is original, past is past so many people worldwide know the world "India" not "Bharat" even for me im just not used to saying Bharat it just sounds weird but when I say India I can say it comfortably and also thinking abt the businesses its just hard so its really better not to change the name these people are just thinking about the past history but they are not thinking about the future and the present they are only saying that because of sentiment so I totally agree with you.
