Not just beginner, but in general. Was told to go big when I got in the hobby and started a WB 130.4 and hated keeping it up. Closed it up and did the WB 25g and its little work and pure enjoyment. I don't ever see myself doing a reef in a bigger tank again.
As someone who worked retail in a saltwater lfs, I tried to never give the go big advice. I liked recommending 20 to 40 gallon tanks because even though there can be more swings, when something goes wrong it's not as much of an uphill battle to correct. It seems like beginners stay in the hobby longer if they get a couple easy wins at the beginning!
I feel the same way. I started my first saltwater tank 17 years ago and I was told bigger is easier, but that’s only half the story. Big aquariums cause as many problems as it solves IMO. First off the price of everything is bigger, and realistically it just gives you more room to build bad habits. When I set up my first Pico-Reef I realized that, it’s almost comically simple and cheap! I didn’t need supplements or any fancy gadgets because I just did a daily 1 Liter water change. The biggest challenge was choosing corals that wouldn’t outgrow the tank too quickly.
I've watched this video like 3 times just to observe the coarl placement in a smaller tank, absolutely phenomenal inspiration for any one with a smaller tank! Wow!
Really nice tank. It goes to show anything is possible as long as you’re willing to put the work in to keep it. The rock work is awesome and helps to fit lots of coral
This tank is simply awesome! Wow! Rockwork is dope and coral selection and their placement is fantastic. Thanks for sharing this beauty! I wish I had a tank like this: beautiful and healthy.
Super nice, I have a 20gal Max Nano and removed my skimmer 3 weeks ago. World of difference, the tank with weekly water changes have made my Corals look much better. I've added about 1 1/2lbs of Biohome Ultimate Media and also turned whites completely off as well. Cycle up to 80% blue and the corals have responded and look great. This video made me smile knowing I'm on track and didn't need all the side equipment. I also had a canister refugium and took that off as the tank numbers were ZERO. Way to clean per-say. Again great video and I just subscribed
That’s a stunning tank. I started in the reef hobby back in 2003 (20 years ago) but when I had a tank crash, I got out. Just recently I started thinking about setting up another little tank and ran into this 20g tank. It’s amazing. Real nice corals.
Excellent job in this video Josh thank you ! I started the adventure and jumped the gun..began with a 32 bio..4 days later bought a 92g Reefer (Manhattan Aquariums) not thinking I could get the look I just saw in this video. Once I can stabilize the reefer, I’m gonna tackle the nano. More content like this (types, growth, placement, feeding) you guys are great!
What a great tank. I’m just about to start my first reef in a WB 25G after 15 years in freshwater this is the type of content I need. Would love to see an update on this one.
What a gorgeous tank, I have my cube in my front room. I had to change the stock pump as I found it a tad noisy, but it is a great tank. In fact I love the WB so much I purchased one of their frag tanks. I have a very low fish stock, my filtration is simple for both tanks filter wool and bioballs on the cube and a roller mat and bioballs on the frag tank.
Makes me happy knowing that with my current 40g breeder set up running on a canister filter that without a skimmer amazing coral growth and coloration can be achieved without having to go to the extreme with equipment. Hopefully one day I'll have my 210g set up so I can expand my coral collection particularly my blue ridge coral.
My Waterbox peninsula 25 is coated with GHa that I’ve been manually picking out day after day! That said, my Kenya tree I got from you all and my chalices are thriving. My Hollywood stunner is prob 8x the size of when I got it, my Kenya tree is probbaly 20x the size and has dropped 2 babies. My GSP are doing great as is my Xenia!
That’s great to hear! As for algae, pull as much out as you can manually, keep on top of your nitrates/phosphates, and grab yourself some blue legged hermits!!
Such a great video. Thank you for this. I've been in freshwater and am getting started with a reef tank, converting my IM 30L. This is amazing inspiration. I'm not gonna go this deep yet so I'm not sure I'd say "beginner friendly", ha! But the inspiration of just taking care of things and putting in the thoughtfulness and effort is something beginners really benefit from, for me anyway. Thank you!
The tank itself has been there since opening, fortunately, there are a lot of UA-camrs that came by to check out the tank in its early years! That’s probably the earliest we could go haha. thank you for watching!
Respect. Much different species in a small room. Not natural but absolut amazing collection of corals. I like IT when the tank is overloaded. IT IS Like Art to scape this coral world.
Going to switch to your SPS template that has all blues for the 2nd half of the day. I have a T5 hybrid with 4 bulbs paired with 4 xr15 g5 pros. How long would you run the t5s for and whicj bulbs would you recommend to use?
We don’t use much t5s, but since they’re are more of a supplement, just get one that would complement your tank. The time where the whites are on is when you can put the t5s on. So the rest is just pure blue and coral pop!!
Question about this lighting profile - Josh says in the video it’s 41% overall intensity, but when you download the profile from the WWC site and import it looks more like 60% overall intensity with the schedule at 100%. Which is right? 🤔🤷🏼♂️
I’d like to know what she uses in her filtration chambers such as mechanical and media filter. I noticed the tank is really clean and there’s no sign of algae. Thanks
I have them and they don’t bother the coral at all they kind of just stay under there rock they live under and don’t bother anything they’re really peaceful in my

Same here. I had exact same WB frag tank. Now have 20 cube. Much better.
Same here, I dropped down to a 25 and a 20 AIO and now they've been going for almost 6 years. I was never a fan of the "start big" advice
I’m at a 75 after 10-20-45 and it’s the most I can handle and enjoy.
With the tech today, I think smaller/nano tanks are the way to go for beginners. If you can master it, you can handle a big tank.
100% the secret to this tank is the amount of water changes..no skimmer either? Deffo water changes.

What were the light settings?
7:30 mark
What are the parameters? Po4,No3,...
Have you guys got a way to help someone duplicate this system?
How would this lighting translate to Ai prime 16? Just set one up in my Waterbox 20
You can mimic this lighting schedule by downloading one of our AI presets on our website :) worldwidecorals.com/pages/led-lighting-presets
How long is the tank light on for ?
We usually run our lights for around 10 hours
What kind of salt is used here?
What sand is this ?
I want a reef tank but dont want my house to be blue...is there a light that doesnt spread like this?
would also come down to the size tank you are looking for, the lights we would recommend is Radion,AI and Dalua
Update on this tank?!
Does anyone have a step by step guide to start ( making the first cycle, what to do everyday, week, montlhy ) etc...
What controls algae’s
Keeping the nutrients at an acceptable level, a good clean up crew, and regular maintenance like water changes and cleaning the glass!
