'George Ernest Morrison' is a famous Australian ! His book 'An Australian in China' detailed his walk from the Eastern side of China across to Burma in the West. This book was extremely popular and describes the Old China in some detail. For many years he worked as a journalist for The Times, reporting on events in China. There is a detailed biography by Cyril Pearl - 'Morrison of Peking' that is most readable. Morrison was in England after attending the Versailles Peace conference and fell ill. He came to Sidmouth in an attempt to recuperate, but died. His widow bought a large plot on the hillside, with a view over the sea. It is good to see his memorial has been tidied up after some years of neglect. Ian
