The year I turned 50, coincided with the year I was promoted to US Navy O6 (Captain). I had yearned after one of these, since seeing a S2 Cabriolet in bright polar white, on the pier in Norfolk VA. As it turned out, it belonged to my XO, who had recently “survived” a nasty divorce. I bought mine, years later, a 1990 S2 Cabriolet, in the same blue as yours (Baltic Blue, with linen colored full leather). Now in my final run in my 60s, I still own the car. I live in New England, so winters I place her in “mothballs”. She still hasn’t crossed the 70k mark in the odometer. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to selling it and buying a 911…..but this cab, gets comments everywhere we go. Good luck on your restoration journey..the 944 takes cornering as if on rails. Enjoy that car, young man…as an old man, I certainly have!
I’ve just found this channel and I love it I used to have a 944 and I loved it You must have sorted the problem with the indicators with the key out of the ignition They are purely parking lights if you want in on at night I hope this helps enjoy
Its been my favourite car since i was a child. My dad has been through plenty of porches and ive always loved his. but none of the 911s have scratched the itch. Ive been looking at buying one of these as my second car. So soon my dream will come true.
I wasn't too much of a fun initially, but it very quickly grew on me. Annoyingly, trying to source a dash in that dark navy blue is proving a challenge!
I just bought a 1989 944. Mine is Red with Black Interior. Mine is only the 2.5L inline 4. I look forward to seeing how you guys get on over the pond as Im an American... congrats on the car and content. Sorry about his Arse though. I would say what i know about mine? Timing Belt, Water Pump, Fuel Pump, Brakes. If the clutch feels ok I would say hold off on that because the new clutch kit is going to run you about 750 quid or 1000 USD The timing belt kit is about 500 USD Best of luck Cheers
Interesting! We've already bought the timing belt kit - sets you back around £220 here. Clutch kit is about £600 give or take. Thanks for your kind words! We look forward to seeing you around.
I hope all is well. The noise at start up sounds more like its from the power steering belt. Mine howls on cold weather start ups. I've enjoyed an 89 S-2 for about a decade. I think you'll like the ride. The engine pulls hard and the handling is good enough to dice with a 911.
We're holding up well, we hope you are too. Yes that's our guess too, it's not the timing belts otherwise that engine would be shot. And it certainly seems that way, the powerband at 3,600rpm upward is a real puncher. - LF
I used to have a black 89 944 2.7 with the tele-Dial wheels but always lusted after an S2 the either the cup 1 or 2 wheels. Nice colour. Yeah it was a great car and the only car I owned that genuinely put a smile on my face every time I opened the front door of the house. I had pinch myself to realise this is mine” 😀 Of course that on,y lasted for the first month or so, after I got the first service bill, it was a different story; there’s no such thing as cheep Porsche ownership (unless you’re a Porsche mechanic).
Your car has the classic 944 non turbo whine which is caused by the balancing shaft belt contacting the balance shaft idle roller. I just did this fix on my 1987 944 and it stopped the whine. Take off the upper front engine cover and slip credit card between the belt and roller. If it stays the belt is touching and you just need to adjust the roller position to about 1 mm clearance
I had an 87 944 T one of the best cars on the road I think. What to watch for? Once you change the timing belt in 2500 miles I believe you will need to make sure you adjust it to specs; breaking the belt will result in rebuilding your engine. Give it a good once over by a certified Porsche mechanic, he or she may find issues you may not know exists.
The timing belt is a tad old but in fairly good nick right now. We're planning on replacing it next episode regardless but that is the biggest concern on our minds right now.
Hi. This is great especially if you talk about fixing it up. I have an '89 with the 3.0l. I have the same issue where the engine shuts off. I wait some time and it starts again. What was the sensor that you changed? And how did you figure it out? Many thanks.
Forgive me as my memory is blurry, but we didn't actually change any sensor, it was just one at the rear of the engine was loose near the end of the injector rail! It's worth just making sure all your sensors are secure and have clips before you start paying money to replace everything.
I have quite a few older BMWs and a 1986 Porsche 944 non-turbo, it's a very fun car but sometimes getting parts is killer, compared to the BMW that everything is available for.
Thanks Harvey! Yes, still planned - Covid restrictions have eased now so next episode will be timing belts and water pump. Looks to be a late September release right now. - LF
Not increasing in value by much? Is this a new corona assessment? The turbo’s, S’s, S2’s and clean base model cars have all substantially increased in value in the last decade and in the last few years they’re up by 200%. After things level off again these cars will continue to increase in value.
It's worth mentioning we're talking UK prices here. For years you could pick these up for next to nothing. Only really in the last few years have their started to increase. We can't comment on the US as we don't know enough about the market there just yet.
The following has been purchased and is due to be filmed week of the 18th. - Timing belt change (complete) - Water pump & power steering belt - Temp sensor and thermostat - Clutch slave cylinder This will make up two episodes. Restrictions in the UK don't allow more than six from separate households to be in the same place. Only now have we been able to get everyone around at the correct time. So yes, unfortunate covid played a huge part, but on the flip side there will be at least two episodes before the end of the year. Thanks, TBR

To be fair, in the UK at least there's still a fairly large spare parts industry for the 944 - not as easy to get interior bits though.
