- A classic moment in time from our 1st Season of SOLID GOLD: Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin perform "I Say A Little Prayer" on April 12, 1981. The arrangement was produced by myself (Solid Gold's musical director, Michael Miller - “Mickle”) and this performance aired on April 12, 1981.
My band for this performance included:
Joe Kloess - keyboards
Stewart Levin - keyboards
Leaky Valentine - guitar
Harold Alexander - percussion
Wade Short - bass
Greg Warner - drums
Background singers:
Dionne Warwick
Darlene Love
Eunice Peterson
The first and the second most charted female artists of the rock era (1955-1999). Just damn!
Facts 💯 these are the true legends. It was because of them, we had Whitney, Celine, and Mariah.
@Keenan Shepherd How come it worked for 15 minutes when you just got introduced to it 12 minutes ago?
thought it was Diana Ross?
@@oldsoul_anth243 what’s Dianas solo + supreme
That was her godmother
I don't see a battle here. I just see two musical giants complementing one another. This is beautiful to me.
kpitt1204 agreed
It's the inbred way of causing conflict between their enemies
Dionnie Warwick was always Dionnie but Areath could just be moody had to catch her on the right day LMAO!
kpitt1204 yess
kpitt1204 yes
*Dionne's ability to smile while singing just proves God made her to sing.*
So true❤
It's part of the technique she uses it has nothing to do with God
She should do so to point the resonance at the necessary position
@@becauseisaidso92 Why are you like this? It has everything to do with God and I’m fairly certain she’d tell you the same thing.
I honestly just think she has big teeth. No shade
Never realized dionne warwick was this beautiful. She looked like a supermodel perfume ad
loot at her in the 60´s Stunning!!
The good old days
Yes. Black version of Linda Evangelista
According to Google, Dionne actually hosted this show back in the late '70s and early '80s for several seasons.
And Aretha Franklin was just as beautiful .
There's something about Dionne's voice that is so soothing to hear.. very angelic and calm, such a true singer
No one doubts that Dionne has a beautifully supple head voice with crystal clear soprano notes and that she uses them very well. Dionne is probably one of the few handful of singers that can duet with Aretha and maintain her own presence in a performance, as a vocalist, and not be overwhelmed by Aretha's...well....Aretha.
I am pretty sure Aretha felt the same way too. They were like the biggests in their era.
Aretha is very subdued here, but her performances during this period were very subdued in general. Her father had been shot in 1979 and left in this vegetative state under which he lived for another five years until he ultimately passed. This was her worst decade both personally and vocally.
@@direfranchement huh? Being subdued vocally shouldn't necessarily mean worst. Even though that is her trademark, caterwauling and vocal gymnastics aren't always favorable. Christina Aguilera's stuff has aged badly, for example, and sounds like a lot of noise.
Dionne is just as technically trained and skilled as Aretha. I would go as far to say as the whole Warwick/Drinkard/Houston family have achieved the highest level of skill as a vocalist. No one can match any of them when they were in their prime. This includes Dionne, DeDe, Cissy & Whitney.
@@destinee971ify nope to Cissy
Dionne OWNED this song
Dionne is the greatest collaborator of all times ...she lets everyone shine
Yup!
As a major recording star, Dionne has always approached duets with taste and generosity toward the other artist. She works as part of a team, sharing the spotlight, always knows her part and sings in service to the performance and the duet without sacrificing herself or her own artistry. That's a delicate balance that seems to come to her naturally, intuitively. Can't say that for every singer. Many feel the need to compete or outshine the other. I don't know Dionne personally, but in terms of her stage persona, she's always been a class act. One of her standout duets is with Anne Murray (Quebec). The two ladies look and sound amazing together.
This was beautiful 💙💚💜💗
swprojectpromo you are so right. She was not a stage hog, even on her own damn show. But I’m not surprised because she is from an entire family of good singers. It’s hard to be selfish when surrounded with talented people.
No one can put this better than you can. Good observation skills. You went a step further than the regular person. Hats off and go to the head of the class.
I think that you are "hinting'" at her friend Patti SCREAM LaBelle who does overdue it and carries on to giving the listener a head- ache.
I've talked with recording industry folks who've worked with Dionne and the word is she's a class act, like you've said.
"HUMBLE" is the word I'm hearing, over and over again from different people.
My personal fave duet from Dionne is "Love Power" with Jeffrey Osbourne. Kenny G even pops up, playing the sax.
Dionne's voice is so rich and supple in that song.
No surprise, the song was written by none other than Burt Bacharach.
I can't understand why people are making this a battle. They are both literally murdering this song. I love the collab.
Akeem J Ha ha I like what u said.
The reason Aretha really recorded her version of the song was to show Dionnie how to actually sing it and that came from Myrna of the sweet inspiration who did back ground on both songs Aretha was thick off at Dionnie at the time they say Aretha could be very Moody so she would fall out with anybody
Dionne can be a really nasty vindictive old bitch too! She proved that on Celebrity Apprentice!
@@knockshinnoch1950 i wished i wldve never seen her on celeb apprentice, ruined my opinion oh her... she just a cantankerous and nasty ass Cissy... must run in the family
True DAT lol 😀
Ms. Dionne is never pressed or bothered
Stop comparing our divas and accept these two legends sitting on one stage singing a classic!
Awesome performance, by (2) of the best vocalist in our Century.
Thank you, Ms Aretha Franklin and Thank you, Ms Dionne Warwick. 💕
Aretha franklin voice had change from smoking Now go back to when she record it in the late 60's They couldn't touch her She was a bad woman
I hate when they do that. Tear one down and make a competition out of it
When two Giants simultaneously invaded the Solid Gold stage damnit!! ❤❤
Dionne was generous enough to invite Aretha in her show and sing her song! I love both versions tbh.
Dionne had that jazzy/R&b sound Aretha had the gospel/Soul sound !
Dionne had that Pop/R&B sound, while Aretha gave a Jazz/Soul vibe to it.
I have never ever heard Dionne hit a bad note, even on astounding technical riffs - and Aretha, well, Aretha sings as easily as breathing - incredible duo of heaven-sent talent :-)
That probably because both Warwick & the late Franklin could read music.
@@ctruth6185 dionne could but aretha couldnt she learned to play piano by ear.
Very classy of Dionne to let Aretha start the song...true artist!
Let? Burt Bacharach said Aretha's version was the definitive one.
And they are using Aretha Franklin's arrangement
@@rwlowe6177 Yes, let…considering it is Dionne’s and written specifically for her. No need for a comparison. Both great versions.
Aretha vocal placement and adlibs are genius i love how are went smooth to compliment dionne tone and dionnes ability to harmonize and still stand out should be studied
A classic moment between two icons that both made this song a hit, individually, came together to bless us with this one moment in time. Why can't we just enjoy this rare performance of these music titans and leave the comparisons out of it? They both have stellar careers, at this point, of more than 50 yrs each, world wide acclaim, more hits than anyone can count, and will go down in history as the best of the best in popular music. Just let it be and enjoy that this was captured on film.
AMEN ERIC
Eric King
No need to compare Aretha and Dionne as they are both essential, but this pairing just didn't work. They tried to mesh two fundamentally different interpretations into one arrangement here and it is awkward and uninspired. As singers, Aretha and Dionne could not be stylistically more different.
ABSOLUTELY.
Eric King
It was captured on videotape.
@@direfranchement Completely different styles, but I believe the two arrangements did not work, not that it could not, but because there either was not enough time to get them together to practice, or because the musical director, if any, just threw them out there in a "have at it" kind of way.
I think of the job that was done on the Natalie Cole/Whitney Houston collab and the difference in the outcome...a lot of improv but clearly arranged for the different vocal styles in a truly complementary fashion.
This could have worked but not enough effort was made...not even on the first two lines of Aretha"s part here...her version from the record would have enhanced that section and other similar effort to showcase the different arrangements would have elevated this entire performance...
Dionne left no crumbs. She did that, reminder- it was and still is her song.
I wish they never touched a cigarette in their lives. The best technical Pop and soul singers.
Two legends and REAL singers! ❤️
Both of them are incredible ... both with voices and styles that are instantly recognized.. to choose one over the other is meaningless...
Sorry, but I found it quite meaningful for me to choose my Dionne over Aretha 😁
Even better has anyone ever noticed how much Whitney Houston looks like a youthful Dionne Warwick?
I love aretha’s tone at this age it’s so rich !
Awe. Aa
You noticed that too.
What Can Or Can't I Say!! Dionne Warwick And Aretha Franklin Singing Together On Stage 🎤🎤 Two Great Singer's That Can And Could!! Sing This Song 🎶🎵!! Like Nobody Else.. This Song Came From Their 60's Era And Time ⏰ 🎥 🎤!! They Both Own This Hit Song.
Aretha is the Queen of soul and lady Dionne's voice certainly blends with almost every vocal artist, that is phenomenal. Divas and Legends.
Dionne is the queen of smooth pop
That was the most complimenting duet. The both really worked together. Beautiful!
Love Dionne dress and the way she sits on that stool, like a swan .....
Very different styles but 2 of the all-time greats. I personally prefer Dionne's crystal-clear jazzy style that seems tailor-made for pop songs, but I can see how a lot of people like Aretha's much bigger "take no prisoners" style. I respect that Aretha toned it down for this duet so that she wouldn't overpower Dionne's voice.
I agree with you. I've always thought the difference between the two is that Warwick uses her voice to showcase the song while Franklin uses the song to showcase her voice.
Two Legend 's Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin 👍👍🤩🤩 Sing The Song Queen 's 😄😄❤️
Two ladies born to sing.
I love them both , like how could anyone not but Aretha gives me goosebumps ❤❤
I love them both… my goodness. I love their separate versions but this is amazing… 🤍
Lord...when Aretha started singing. I love both of them. I’m glad they performed together.
Ms Dionne is singing this in the arrangement done for ms Franklin.. nice to see them together
2024 and this is beautiful
Solid Gold was EVERYTHING!
I love how they merged their two versions together.
The body language is epic!!!!!!
THIS IS NOT A BATTLE, PERIOD!!! STOP IT!!! Both Dionne and Aretha's version were chart-toppers, PERIOD!!! STOP IT!!!
Bruce Scott, yeah, but Aretha's went to the Top Ten on the Billboard charts, and won her a Grammy.
AM Williams Aretha received a nomination, not an Award. And chart-wise, Dionne's performed better on the US Hot 100, by reaching #4.
But they are both great versions. Neither were actual chart-toppers though.
Bad version Neither like each other
You Stop it! Neither like each other Aretha said that Herself last year. Dionne didnt Attend her funeral nor sent flowers
Aretha...hands down. Don’t get mad 😂
I’ve always preferred Warwick’s version but it’s pretty awesome to see these 2 legendary performers share a stage and sing the song together.
The remarkable Madame Dionne Warwick.
Anyone ever notice that Whitney Houston voice was a mixture of Cissy and Dionne..but influenced by Aretha.
Don't forget Dee Dee
I always heard cissy in her voice specialy the older she got
Yip
Whitney was a much better singer than Cissy or Dionne. I always thought she got some of her stage poise from Dionne...but in terms of her vocal athleticism, she came closer to Aretha than any other singer.
direfranchement she sounds like her mom, watch Cody videos in her prime!! Whitney sounds exactly like her moms
Dionne=Class
Dionne is one of a few who knows how to duet. She always complements the other singer . Shes had those Gorgeous cheekbones back then and that glorious voice... Aretha is the queen of soul Dionne is the true queen of pop music IMHO
2 TITANS OF MUSIC !!!!
2 UNDISPUTED WOMEN WITH HIGH STATE OF MIND AND DIAMOND CATALOG OF SONGS LIKE NO ONE ELSE !!!
I LOVE THEM BOTH AND I SALUTE THEM 💖🌹🌹

Dionne looks amazing 😉!!!
They was SANGINNNN ❤❤❤
Not to take anything away from this performance but Dionne Warwick owns this song... it was written for her as a soloist.
AND THEY ARE SITTING DOWN. JUST LET THAT SINK IN FOR A MINUTE......👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Two divas
My soul was a little hurt that I never knew about this performance. My soul is healed now that I have this in my life. 👏
wow.... what a gem!
Dionne my goodness this women is mesmorizing.
I love both versions of this song! They both did Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis’s song justice!
Agree but nobody could produce better than Chips Moman
Queen put her ego aside for 3 minutes, look what a classic duet everyone had the opportunity to see and hear. Masterful
This Classic song was recorded by Dionne first then by Aretha later both had success with the song 👍👍🤗 Two QUEENS AND LEGENDARY
Dionne Warwick was 1 of Aretha's favorite singers.
@Fresh Beast #GameRecongizeGame Aretha Franklin said that herself!
lmaooooo when?
@@JaySmith-wo3di she said during an interview with Wendy Williams.
@@karameldreem really? Please give us the exact time when Wendy interviewd Aretha and where she stated that Dionne is her favorite singer
@@rjames908 do it yourself 😅
The two had a wonderful chemistry in this duet. The two brought their own style to this classic. One does not try to emulate the other. One doesn’t try to do out the other. This lives up to the title, this was a Solid Gold performance.
How are you doing today my name is winston Moore and how is the weather over there
@@winstonmoore7441 hello, it was sunny and warm here in LA California. How’s the weather there?
Dionne was great in her era, but Queen Aretha was for the ages
and never lost her majesty.
Icons for sure. Real talent. No need to get undress and crawl on the floor or straddle chairs on stage to get our attention.
When the greats had such class.
Aretha`s vocal beauty , phrasing and vocal expression are amazing... This was during the time Dionne Warwick would always dress to kill .
People who say Aretha is holding back have clearly never heard Dionne belting out her money notes.
Exactly!
Aretha was clearly more chilled than usual.
Aretha could sing circles around Dionne and Dionne knew that...everyone did. Of course it wasn't a competition as stylistically these two are like night and day. Dionne could belt back in the day, but her belting always came across as more suited to the theater than Soul as she was never a particulary soulful singer. She could be a wistful singer though, at her best. Songs like "In Between the Heartaches", her recording of "I Say a Little Prayer", "Who is Gonna Love Me", etc...all show that. She was best with Bacharach and David...they wrote around her voice and knew how to bring out her best qualities on record.
Anyone familiar with Aretha would know that she was holding back. I've never seen her show this level of restraint while dueting with another woman. Dionne was always gracious and complementary with her partners, sharing the stage, but Aretha always takes over and tries to upstage her partner, unless it's a man. Aretha must have a lot of respect for Dionne, or there was an iron-clad contract signed beforehand.
@@direfranchement No Dionne had a certain unique technique in her voice the way she interpeted a song..Dionne didnt have to be loud and overally gutsy soulful. Whitney had that same similiar techique in her voice also. Whitney was good in interpetating, phrashing a certain control perfect pitch but then able to delivery a strong belt with her notes as well.
This is my very first time seeing them singing together they both sound awesome together i thought Dionne was whitney for a minute they sound awesome together real rap
i love aretha’s ad-libs towards the end of the song
I believe they respected it other!
These two divas haven’t shared the same stage often. Fantastic! R. I. P Aretha.
Look at these two beautiful, tremendously talent black women singing alongside each other. Thank you, Aretha and Dionne, for your contributions to music and for inspiring so many black people and women (especially black women).
Two of THE best voices in music. The way they both interpret music is astounding.
I never new about this and I used to watch Solid gold back then. This is why I still love youtube. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 Goddesses side by side
Im not really an Aretha fan but the ease at with she sings this song.......
Amazing!.....Dionne did this song first in 1967, and Aretha remade it in 1968. Kudos to Dionne for being so gracious, sharing the spotlight with Aretha!
I have always been a Big fan of Dionne Warwicks and consider her my All -Time favo/urite presenter on Solid Gold. Aretha Franklin has always had a place in my heart and it is sad she is no longer with us but with singers like these two the next generation have a lot to live up to.
This was a slice of heaven!
Can y’all dig the fabulous our ladies if song 💕🦹🏾♂️🌷👌🏾👼🏿
They both did they shit respectfully and beautiful 😩
Both Legends sounded wonderful and both showed grace and dignity. I thought that this duet is quite beautiful!
The 2 greatest 🥰
The level of Black Excellence is exemplary!😍
I Love both versions and I live seeing these two legends perform it together.
They are Fabulous
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote "I Say a Little Prayer" for Dionne Warwick. Her recording of the song originally peaked at number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in December 1967. On the R&B Singles chart it peaked at number eight.
Hal David wrote the lyrics to the song to convey a woman's concern for her man who's serving in the Vietnam War which was being waged far away in Southeast Asia at the time.
I was seven years old when that song first came out. I remember it being played on the radio a lot, but not as much as her hit "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" the next year.
That song was also written for her by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" was Warwick's biggest international hit to that point, selling several million copies worldwide and winning Warwick her first Grammy Award.
"I Say a Little Prayer" also returned to the Pop & R&B Top Ten in the fall of 1968 via a recording by Aretha Franklin taken from her 1968 album Aretha Now. In October 1968 Aretha's version of "I Say a Little Prayer" reached number ten on the Hot 100 and number three on the R&B singles chart. In September 1968, it peaked at number 4 in the UK and was Aretha's biggest hit in the UK until her number 1 collaboration with George Michael, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)."
I love both of these ladies.
I Loved Them Together.
Loving this in 2023 .. can come back in 2063 when I’m long gone and peeps will be loving this still ❤

SO fab to these these women who started their journey as talented It Girls of the 60s to make the music is so much a defining part of American culture. Dionne was the reigning Queen of Pop, sitting to the right of the Queen of Soul, this is just magic!
