  • The 1972 Miami Dolphins football team remains the ONLY team in NFL history to have an undefeated season and secure a Super Bowl victory. They lead the league in offense and defense with a 17-0 record. In this short documentary, I take you through the 1972 season of the World Champions and greatest football team in NFL history.

From 1970 through 1974 (5 seasons), Miami was 65-14-1 including the playoffs. Before 1970, Miami was 15-39-2 between 1966 and 1969. All thanks to Don Shula.

I was amazed by Shula. In 1985, the Chicago Bears thought they'd have the perfect season. But I have to think Shula is thinking "not so fast". Coach Mike Ditka for the Bears had been tight end for the Dallas Cowboys in the first Dolphins Super Bowl. And Ditka had caught a touchdown pass in that game. I cannot think that Shula wanted to get even.

All journeyman and mechanics are often overlooked but, when called upon…. there is no one better to trust. I know this from personal experience with more players from that team then were featured in this vid as well as Hank Goldberg, some time before he passed. Both Earl and Hank were in wheelchairs, Coach was still ambulatory but sadly, a later ‘fish’ couldn’t attend 75’s retirement roast due to cancer. Czonc flew out of Alaska, that’s harder than pulling teeth …. an amazing group of men, fathers, husbands and friends. Who put a 4ft gator in Coach’s shower in training camp?

I've been telling people Trey Lance...IS NOT the "Earl Morrall" of the Niners...
The Niners, with JG, needed a backup that could get it done....and take over the reins in the long term
      Purdy is that.
      Go Niners.
Oh, yes, watching Morral get it done, was GREAT. I was in Key West for 7 years...one of which was the undefeated season
(So I root for Miami when they play any team other than my Niners

I don't buy the "no politics" part. There were players, particularly black ones of the Dolphins (they were a minority on that team, unlike today), who were ready to follow the lead of Muhammad Ali and refuse to be inducted. The difference is they kept their beliefs to themselves, except for 17:52 publicity-seeking Mercury Morris. How do I know this? Joe Robbie, the Dolphins owner, had 11 kids and lived a few blocks away from us in Miami Shores. My mother became friends with Liz Robbie, Joe's wife, I had a couple of dates with daughter Debbie, my younger brothers played with their kids, and my mother would share a little team gossip she heard from Liz. My family moved to Houston (I stayed in Gainesville) in late 1973, and attended the Dolphins Super Bowl VIII win and the celebration in the Robbie's hotel suite. Alas, the connection faded just as the team did when the WFL stole Csonka, Kiick and Warfield with money the owners of the Memphis Southmen did not have. Both the team and those three players were never the same after that debacle. After Nixon's resignation in 1974, and Ford's refusal to prosecute the ex-president, the country was not the same either. Exhibit A: You know who.

Conservatives are always looking backwards to an imaginary time when the problems of today were rendered invisible by large-scale public ignorance. Thing is, by 1973, these issues were out in the open and haven't faded from view since then. They've only worsened, and are evident when looking at homeless encampments and noticing how most of those folks are white. The economics of it are a subject for another time, but they have transcended race and exposed the injustices for ALL to see.

The story of Earl Morrall should be made into an epic movie. There has NEVER been a player who contributed more with less recognition. After studying the "perfect season" for decades, I'm convinced the '72 Dolphins would not have gone undefeated had Griese stayed healthy. Few people realize what an athlete Morrall was. He played TWENTY-ONE years in pro football. How many players can claim that????

Shula said that when he wanted to bring Eral Morrall onto the team with a $75K contract that team owner Joe Roby told him hell no I'm not paying a backup QB that much but Shula convinced him they needed him and Roby relented. Without him there probably would have never been a perfect season. But make no mistake, the Steelers had the Dolphin's offense shut down in the AFC Championship game until Shula put Griese in to start the 2nd half.

I became a DOLPHAN their first year (1968, and I was 13 yrs old) and they were absolutely awful, but it didn't matter to me because the city finally had an NFL team. When Shula signed to coach the team I knew this team would raise some hell in the league, and boy did they ever. Again, you did a fine job putting this together. Dolphins would have had to play in pittsburgh for the afc title game in 74 if they had won the sea of hands game vs the raiders. It should be remembered that swann, stallworth and lambert were all rookies in 74 and all played key roles in their 24-13 defeat of oakland at alameda coliseum in the 74 afc championship. Miami beat pittsburgh in 71, 72, and 73 but the steeler dynasty roster was not complete until 74. Mike Webster was also a rookie in 74 but unlike the other 3 aforementioned players did not play against the raiders in the steelers 24-13 win, not supplanting ray mansfield as the starting center until the 76 season. In the dolphins victories vs the steelers in 71, 72 and 73 it should also be noted that their defense did not fare particularly well while Bradshaw was playing in those games. Jake Scott likely would not have been ready to go vs pittsburgh along with curtis johnson as well. The steel curtain allowed all of 29 yards rushing vs oakland in the afc title game. Also of note is the fact that Vince Costello was running the defense and not Bill Arnsparger. Tough to see how Miami could have won at three rivers minus 2 starters in the secondary and playing on the road. I would predict a close loss. The shame was that 74 was the last year the home sites were rotated amongst the divisions. Under the system used today the first round would have seen buffalo at oakland and pittsburgh at miami. A first round that year at the orange bowl and going in with a healthy scott and johnson I would predict a dolphins win. Then a trip to oakland and if they stay healthy they likely win that too. Then a 3 peat vs the vikings in new orleans. Bottom line is the current seeding system would have resulted in pittsburgh at miami to determine just who would have been the team of the 70's. I'm betting it would have been miami.

Bill Arnsparger was the only Defensive coach to record 2 shut outs in the AFC Championship game in 2 Different decades , 1971 - 1982 . He REBUILT THE NO NAMES into the Killer Bs , Don Shula , failed to REBUILD The Rushing game in the 1980s , Had they had a good ground game , they might have won SB - 17 or SB - 19 although their defensive line was fast at 250 - 265lbs they were getting pushed around by the bigger Offensive lines of the early 1980s negating their quickness by being manhandled so that and the run game was their Achilles heel .

This is a great observation- the AFC was weaker than the NFC in 1970 and 1972 and even though Baltimore did win it in 1970 they were considered as part of the old NFL. The 1972 Dolphins signaled a changing of the Guard, with them the Steelers and Raiders it took until the 1977 season for an NFC team to win a Super Bowl

Critics like to argue the '72 Dolphins had a weak schedule, playing only three games against teams that ended up with a winning record, but consider these facts:
    1. They played the Chiefs in an epic playoff game the year before and had them on the '72 schedule. Who knew they would be bad in '72?
    2. They had a career backup, 38-year-old quarterback most of that season in Earl Morrall after Griese went down.
    3. There was no home field advantage for the AFC title game. Miami had to win IN PITTSBURGH!
The biggest regret I have about that Super Bowl was Shula got greedy. He wanted to win that game 17=0 to finish 17-0. Garo was kicking low line drives all day and was attempting a long FG. Shula should have had Seiple punt. Even if it's a touchback, there would be less than two minutes, and Washington did not have all its time outs. They needed two scores. The No-Name defense would have shut the Redskins down as it had all afternoon. So Miami would have had, to date, the only Super Bowl shutout, 14-0 instead of 17-0.

The biggest break the Dolphins got that year was when Oakland got eliminated by the Immaculate Reception. Oakland matched up with Miami better than anyone else in the NFL. A Dolphin-Raider conference championship game would have been a dead even matchup.
Miami had less pressure on them in 1973, however, and avenged an early season loss to Oakland by defeating them pretty easily in the AFC Championship game that year.

But in 84 he did have to face Montana and the 49ers and pretty much the same thing happened. But I will tell you I would rather that those Marino Dolphins or the Kelly Bills were the ones winning the 6 Super Bowls for the AFC east rather than the cheaters in New England. I hope now that Brady is gone that they are at least no better than mediocre for the rest of Belichicks career. At least the Dolphins and their coach had class except for maybe Bryan Cox. But even he was that way because earlier in his career he didn't have control over his emotions and for some reason Shula couldn't bring him under control. Neither could Dave Wannstadt in Chicago. It took Cox playing first for Parcells with the Jets and then Belichick (one of the few things that Belichick can be admired for)for him to channel those emotions solely on playing and not flying off the handle. I never could figure out why Shula was never able to get him to channel all that energy because he was one of those coaches who was the best at it.
