    I think it is truly amazing that Glenn Cunningham achieved the Silver after suffering a terrible childhood accident of burns at 8 years old. His 13 year old brother died in the accident. With Cunningham, doctors recommended amputation on his legs. He lost skin off his knees, shins, all toes on his left foot and his transverse arch destroyed. I heard he would make loud and painful noises while racing that often disturbed his competitors. Still, he set world records. I love his courage and more!

    The oak tree presented to the winner, Jack Lovelock, was taken back to New Zealand and planted. It still stands in the town of Timaru, NZ.

    The video quality is better than I would have expected for being so old.

    Jack Lovelock won New Zealand’s first Olympic athletics gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in a race witnessed by 120,000 spectators - Lovelock contemplated competing in the 5000 m instead of the 1500 m - Lovelock’s time of 3 minutes 47.8 seconds broke the world record for the 1500 m and made the 4-minute mile seem a real possibility (another 109 m run at the same pace would have resulted in a 4:04 mile).

    @sbtbfanatic Hi. This video is a part of the official movie of olympic games of berlin 1936 made by Leni Riefenstahl. And I uploaded this video directly from my original DVD of the movie.

      By registering for 'adfree' then no ads. will appear on UA-cam. Unsure how I did it. Possibly it was a setting adjustment in 'Windows 10?' Anyway it was a free election.

    I read somewhere that at the Cunningham farmhouse someone had put gasoline in a can marked "kerosene" and when one of the boys poured it in the stove there was a terrible explosion. What a tragedy due to someone's carelessness.

      It's in the relays where the gap really shows. The women's 4 *100 winning team (46.9sec) would be 35 metres behind Wayde van Niekerk (43.03)

      Seems like everybody runs major 1500 finals now like Americans have done for years, it is a sprinter's race where they play a waiting game for the first half, almost like velodrome cycling. I was at the US outdoor championships one year in the early 1990's and I remember they went through the first 400m of the men's 1500 meter final in 80 seconds. The crowd really let them have it, a thunder of boos.

    3:47 back on the old cinder tracks as well as shit shoes compared to now days would put that athlete at 3:42 if he ran now, great run

    • @mathematics5573
      @mathematics5573 3 роки тому

      It is not 3.47. It starts at 16,seconds so it is 3.31. Some of the race must be missing because the WR in 1960 was 3.35. In 1936,is must have been 3.45-50?

  • @sbtbfanatic

    Cunningham (the guy who finished second) kept running inside of the first lane marker. He steps inside the first lane several times between 2:32 and 2:39. I suppose that this was legal back in 1936.

      @keithmoon8838 5 років тому +2

      @@bodyweightkiller You're talking shit. You can't "jam" someone from behind, and there's no contact between Lovelock and Cunningham. Just accept that Lovelock ran the better race.
