It feels so good to be back, Man i miss these flim studies
Me too
Special shout out to Ronnie Bell. Dude's a baller.
Agreed. But my man has to catch ‘em cleanly and hold on to the football.
He's been awesome
Love it. Can we give an applause for objectivity here. Also, best explanation ive seen for the near lb pick. None of the other numbskulls explained the busted coverage. Also agee, the outside panic near pic was the ugliest play.
Yeah, that panic throw triggered me, lol
Jimmy off his back foot?
Well, his analysis is correct that the LB was out of position, but just as important is once again Trey locked in on a given receiver with his eyes from the start and that permitted the LB to jump the pass and almost create an INT. Looking off your receivers is very basic stuff. This is not a skill that should take years and years of NFL games to develop. And to be honest, given several of the completely missed reads he made where he didn't even recognize the correct side of the field to throw to the back in the flat, I would not be surprised at all if he did not even know where the LB would be expected to be or not be in that situation. I mean, c'mon. This guy is regularly missing simple basic reads that you would literally expect a 2nd week FA QB to be able to make pretty easily regardless of whether they are an expert in your offense or not. Poor decision making or slow decision making or the inability to make correct decisions will never be successfully offset by arm strength. Lets be at least a bit honest here. He's getting these chances because they gave up a treasure trove of picks to get him. If an undrafted FA or late round pick was showing this little ability to make correct reads after 2 full years with the team they would not be on the roster opening game. Does he have a lack of playing time? Yes, most definitely. But a lack of playing time does not prevent you from looking at film and actually learning and knowing where you should be going with the ball quickly when you are put on the field.
Must admit that after last week I was disappointed with Lance. With the help of your breakdowns and understanding of the game I have hope again. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’m pulling for the kid.
I was also impressed with Trey Lance’s decision making too. I think he’s starting to get it. The 49ers also found another late round gem in Bell.
Thanks for yet another great breakdown, JD. It's great to see some solid improvement from Lance - hopefully he can continue that trajectory, and continue working on eliminating those mistakes.
I hope so too!
It looks as if Trey Lance is looking downfield for a big-play rather than trying to just take what the defense is giving him
There are moments of that and some needing to get comfortable
@@jonnydel he definitely needs to be more decisive with his decisions
Well done. Nice to show where he is in processing the play. Some areas look encouraging but you show where improvement is needed. Like to see how he built off of last week.
On the first play I think Lance wanted to go to that deep in route after he didn’t like what he saw after the snap. Pressure got thru so he never got to reset to make that throw. Good rep tho
Problem is, he never looks that way, he works the smash the whole time
Thanks for great analysis as always Jonny.
4:01 The difference is that Juice chipped the edge defender opening up the route, and Willis (or more likely #81) didn't. That's why Bell did not get a clean release, which messed up the timing of the play. So that one was more on the blocking than Trey. It's also why Trey had to wait a little longer for the route to open up.
I'm very glad to see Trey playing much better. He's definitely improved his understanding of scheme and how to apply it in game. He made major improvements in this on the practice squad in his first year, learning scheme, and made even larger improvements since last season. Scheme understanding is how he knows where to go with the ball against the defensive look for a given play. And of course he's identifying the looks much better both pre and post snap.
He also has a much more compact and efficient throwing motion, BUT FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY has vastly better footwork.
Was very happy to see him executing the offense well in his last two drives. He may have a chance to reach more of his potential and be successful in the league. I think this is the first time I've been able to say that confidently, based on his performance.
He's starting to look like a competent QB, and it took a lot of work to get there, given his inexperience.
Even without a clean release, the issue is that Lance hangs on the intermediate too long and can still get the ball out to Bell quicker.
@@jonnydel Yes, but he didn't have a clean look to the flat earlier in the play due to the missed block. I'd say he perhaps saw that and was waiting for the edge rusher to come off the route and go after him.
@@LoanwordEggcorn @jonnydel That's what I noticed as well. The DT and Edge Defender went untouched which makes Lance assess the rush. But you are right about hitting him on the run
Ready for the week 1 breakdown. Good win
Great break down. I Enjoy your hard work.
Thanks!
love it. thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your the best I found you last year ans thank my lucky stars everytime I see a video
Thanks!!!
8:14
Look at the room 33 (I'm assuming Colletto) has in front of him. If the LB did that intentionally then he won't be suiting up on Sundays much longer. Would love to see Trey recognize the bust and flip it out to the flat, but all told i loved what I saw from him this outing.
Great breakdown as always Jonny.
That would be next, next level execution. Normally on that play, the linebacker would have rotated down and #33 WOULD have been covered. So in that sense, it was the right read of the defense for Trey to NOT go to #33. A QB like a Rogers or Brady could probably notice that busted coverage, but only because they know the defense almost perfectly. Trey's not there yet and did the right thing based on what the LB was SUPPOSED to do.
Thanks for the breakdown man, great work
Thanks!
On the near INT, the linebacker literally watched Trey's eyes the entire time. It wasn't a mistake... It was actually a really nice rep by the linebacker.
If he was the hook/curl, yes. It's both. He was playing the wrong zone but played it well
@@jonnydelexcited to see Trey make the LB pay the next time they run this play
On Purdy play no linebacker or end flow with the underneath route
Very, very good stuff. As a Niner fan for 35 seasons, I appreciate JD's efforts at educating us.
Congrats toTrey for competing well against the 3rd/4th stringers, the equivalence to playing college ball in his time at NDSU. Great confidence booster. Excited to start the real season and move on from all the speculation and get the starters working as a TEAM to win games.
Absolutely
Would love to hear your thoughts about the trade johnny
It's been a while. But The game looked like it slowed down for him. And now, like you said he's making the meaningful plays vs the athletic play 1st
JonnyDel Does it Yet Again. Thanks for another great breakdown. Trey looked pretty good overall but what's really important IMO is how well he improved from last week vs the Raiders.
I agree 100%
@@jonnydel Me too.
Cool to see objective film that shows that Lance is indeed learning and improving. Lance gets so much flack, but this isn't a Johnny Manziel, who just made air waves that he didn't do film study--- Trey's really working at it, is naturally a smart kid, but just doesn't have the reps/game experience. Unfortunately, barring an injury to Purdy (which no fan should root for), it's unlikely Trey gets the chance with our roster situation. Still though, going into it with Purdy as QB1 and Lance/Darnold as the backups, with Allen as a fourth QB... we have a very good QB plan for the season.
Purdy 91, Lance 86, Jimmy G 94
Thanks for the breakdown again. I’m a niner fan first not a QB fan, but I’m struggling with the fans preaching Trey should be starting. To me he doesn’t even look close to nfl ready compared to Purdy. Am I off base? Is it close? To me purdy looks like a mobile Jimmy g. Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely rooting for Trey to continue to improve.
I think Purdy fits the scheme well. Kyle has a certain game plan and if it’s executed it can deliver. But if it doesn’t work he doesn’t really know how to adjust. I think the issue with fans that think Trey should start is all they see is the upside. But you also have some fans that look at what Purdy did and think he can’t do any wrong. But he also had a bunch of dropped int last year and he’s consistently had int issues at practice this training camp. But you also have to look at our offense and we’re not the same running team we were in the past. We have a much harder schedule this year and he could possibly struggle because he doesn’t have the arm to threaten teams downfield. I honestly think we’re gonna possibly need all 3 QBs this year. Our right side oline looks bad and our backups besides Ilm Manning are horrific.
@@humbertoramirez358 Brock, Sam and Trey are all great scheme fits for Kyle's offense and Kyle DOES customize his plays to the skillsets of his players. Brock has made some great off-schedule plays and scrambles incredibly well TO SET UP THE PASS, so I don't see how you can say that he doesn't adjust. (Or do you mean Kyle doesn't adjust well enough?)
Not off base at all. To me, Purdy undoubtedly should be QB1. Where Lance falls is what week of the season it would be in, should he be called upon. If he's got 10 games to finish off the season, I think you go with Lance - give him a runway. If it's a late season scenario, Darnold.
@@jonnydel I would agree with giving Lance "a runway" is a very good assessment of how we'd handle QB2 and QB3.
7:50 the QB school grilled lance for this play. Nice to see there's possibly a reason for why lance attempts this throw. A good reminder to not trust every credible take you see out there (unless it's from JFA)
Purdy didn’t have a DE disrupting the play, when you did the side by side of the second play. Js
So in essence the 3rd string cover the play better lol
Ronnie bell looking like we got a steal
Really looking that way. He's doing everything(except for a couple unfortunate dropsies) really well.
@ 6:22 that’s Leroy Watson who gave up the pressure
You are 100% correct. My bad
@@jonnydelno worries brother. Great breakdown as usual
Let’s goooooo! Always love your breakdowns.
Thanks!
Wish all Niner fans watched you, instead of listening to the media & podcasts
I just try and do my part
@jonahpoasa1681 I agree 💯. Jonnydel makes the negative sound positive! Best 49ers breakdown channel.
Love these videos, best break down out there. The problem I see is defenses play Lance a little different, plus the personnel matters. In the play by play of Purdy vs Lance on the same play, Brock throws it out quick to Deebo because he's cleared the line with no defender. On Lance's play, the DE is in his face because Bell runs the route behind the line slower than Deebo. I believe Lance holds it because he's trying to make the defender make a choice and give his guy room. I think Shanahan needs to run plays to get Trey throwing more down field on roll outs, not from the pocket. The defense is spying him as a runner so the quick and short passes get crowded. They are also just trying to blow up the play and bring pressure. If Lance has time, he can operate
Some of it is also the D playing it a tad better but even then, he's gotta get that ball out quicker
@jonnydel I agree, keep doing what you're doing, us 9er fans NEED this, no one ever talks about us unless we're in the SB or really struggling
@@awoodfin3903 Those plays were the same. A skill player missed a chip block on the edge defender on Trey's play to Bell. On Brock's play, Juice chipped the edge, which opened up the route. So it was a missed block that was the difference in those play results.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
#JD49
Really showed his potential. It feels like something clicked for him in this game, I hope we see him improve even further.
Me too
He will only continue to improve 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
That side by side clip with lance and Purdy wasn't a good example. Lance literally had someone in his face lol. Plus I think the WR was trying to get in the way of the defender which caused lance to hesitate
In John we trust 💯
🤜🤛
The right tackle (#78) is Leroy Watson (since you’re putting specific players on blast by name). Otherwise you should probably expect a defensive lineman playing offensive tackle to get whooped…
Well, in my defense, the 49ers website roster had Laulile listed as #78.....As you can see from the film, names are almost impossible to read so I went off the # and the niners website because numbers have changed so much and you got guys who'll be cut playing.
Neat, maybe he can be QB2
I see a lot of channels covering a breakdown of a game, and they're okay, but YOU, Johnny, are far beyond everyone else's breakdowns of the 49ers.
Thank you once again for sharing your incredible knowledge.
Well.. except the QB School by J.T. O'Sullivan who quite honestly decided after Preseason 2 game vs Denver that the kid really has no future despite his good play in the later parts of the game.
Thanks, that means a lot
I'm glad to see you come back to why I subscribed to this channel by showing us the plays and how they work. The podcast was so boring and uninteresting
Well.....ok, lol. I'll always have the in-season breakdowns.
Bro I think this is my favorite video you ve made. U always do a very good job but you explained and showed stuff from the last game and it flowed so well. Thanks for the content and keep up the good work .
Really enjoyed the video , I been subscribed for a while but this is a new email, I have a new you tube account but I just subscribed on this one as well. 🙏🏼🤙🏼💪🏼💫 #Niners
Good stuff, thanks!
Hey Jonny, if he delivers, can we start calling him the Mailman or maybe to be more current the Amazon Delivery Partner?

It's true, he does
I get better every rep I get - Trey Lance
On the INT that you say should have been thrown in the dirt, the QB School channel said that he should have lobbed it like a hand grenade over the defender.
Grounding it would be the safest and smartest.
@@LoanwordEggcorn Why? Lobbing it over is so easy a caveman could do it.
well purdy threw a pick six yesterday on a screen pass…. drake jackson.
That's fair. I haven't watched J.T.'s video yet because I don't want to even inadvertently plagiarize him. To me, just take a safe play there. The DL is all over you, dirt the ball and move on.
@@jonnydel I do appreciate your different take from JT on Lance throwing to the linebacker. JT was baffled by it but you gave a plausible explanation.
Did you know that Trey Lance has thrown for more than 250 yards in a game 1 time (314) in college or the pros? He has thrown for over 200 yards 4 times in his entire career.
He had one year as a starter in college, so I am not surprised.
Not surprising cause he's only played something like 14 full games in college and pro's.
@@jonnydel 20 games not including preseason and the injury game.
That scissors play is the kind of play that scares me for either Lance or Purdy…TE was put in an island and he gets beat while Tackle is trailing and QB takes big hit…that near INT across the middle makes a ton of sense now…LB free lanced and missed his assignment but Trey can’t throw that ball there..that’s a play that Purdy is gonna hit 10/10 especially going left…Trey showed he belongs and recovered from bad start…he will be fine…regular season will tell the story with him and Purdy
Watch Jt O'Sullivan's analysis of that play. I'm sure he will convince you.
@@ccscomments757 I saw it before I saw Jonny’s breakdown
That comparison is not the same at all one has a defender in his face the other doesn’t come on brotha
He played great! Nice finish
For real
Another thing that I'm noticing with Trey is that, he doesn't know when run. If you look at Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson yeah they hang in the pocket but they also know when to run. Trey lance had so many opportunities to get yards with his legs and he didn't take the opportunity. He needs to find a balance between being a quarterback that can scramble and a quarterback that can operate in the pocket because he can't just operate as one or the other
And that will take reps for him to learn that among other things.
@@jmcghane sadly he doesn't have that opportunity. The first 2 years were kind of waisted due to injuries and now the team is peaking and at its best so they are in win now mode. If he had more opportunity to grow in the 1st 2 years this would all be very different
@nightprince8641 Which is why I hope he wins QB2 so that he can play scout and get his reps there. It's nothing compare to game time reps, but it'll have to do for the moment.
@@jmcghane doesn't have to be Brock only had scout and look at how he performed. It's all in your preparation and that is something he needs to figure out to be preparing as if he was the starter
@@nightprince8641 True
"Finally Delivers... " He finally, after several drives, gives a performance that barely saves the 49ers from defeat. Glad he finally showed some play-making ability, but will it be there tomorrow?
20-12 when he got In the game, wouldn’t say leading 3 scoring drives after throwing an INT is “barely saving” the 49ers from defeat. He was the primary reason they won the game
5:36 and 6:33 - 7 step drops in 2023 NFL ... NO!
18:08 - "..fooled by the defense's mistake.." Really???? Quite a different interpretation from J.T. O'Sullivan and QB School with respect to this play.
Widely paraphrasing JT here: failure to read this is "..borderline disqualifying (Lance) for NFL play.."
08:44, another of what I think even Purdy might discover is a 'Wide Ass OPEN! (WAO)" pass play.. but OMFG Lance is too slow.
Summation: Kid doesn't get it.
Guys are wide open, he's throwing high and/or too hard. He needs about 2 years of experience playing in games before he adjust to the speed and can shred the defense. Purdy is much more polished right now but TL will be fine.
This is wrong. Dan Orlovsky already concluded Lance can’t make throws in this offense. 😅
Lol
You're saying one halfway decent performance against 3rd stringers erases every other poor performance we've seen from him so far?
@@TheMarti70 don't think anyone is saying that
@@TheMarti70what other poor performance besides last week ? You must be talking about his first start game against the Cardinals
@juiceloose2462 literally every other time we have seen him. Even the Texans game was painful to watch, we edged a win out on the Texans imploding. Lance has been poor in games and practice up until the last 5 mins of this most recent preseason game, that doesn't just nullify everything up until this point
As someone who believes lance is a bust, I must say I was impressed with how he overcame his jitters in this game. I got hyped over that touchdown drive, very good. BA's reaction was hilarious.
I don't think he's better than Darnold tho. Maybe with time and more reps but I don't know if he'll ever get em in SF. Sure trey looked good against 3rd string Broncos but in a high pressure game against Eagle, Cowboy, Chief....Raider 1st stringers.. he'll likely crumble.
That's completely fair
@@jonnydel love your breakdowns! I'll be watching all year long.
😂 he had a bunch!?
The play beginning around 10:30, totally missed seeing the wide open man on the right side. Number 13 was reading Lance’s eyes and bailed on the receiver (at 10:34) while Lance was still holding the ball.
The play is not designed to go to that side of the field. Now you might say that it should be, but's that's not how scheme (and scheme busters) is designed.
Jonny explained the defensive scheme and the offensive scheme buster at 10:43
Also the deep route on the right side was double covered with a defender underneath and over the top. So the routes on the left side of the field are the ones that create the 3 on 2 matchup. 3 on 2 (left side) has a much better chance of success than 1 on 2 (right side). You want the numbers advantage to win the play.
So in that sense, the deep route is a decoy to use up 2 defenders and open things up on the left side.
Again the goal is to create favorable matchups.
Threw an INT and a couple of more that should have been INTs. Meanwhile Brock & Jimmy G had GREAT STARTS, against other STARTERS after being injured most of the season with more limited reps.
Sure, but they've also played a lot more football, period.
It seems like Trey be off script most of the time
First!
And you win the fried egg award!!! 🍳
Trey was playing against Denver's third stringers, guys (most of whom) will not make the roster. I would have been really surprised if a #1 draft pick did not look good.
Trey was also playing with the 3rd string Offense and offensive line, guys who will most likely be cut, or on the practice squad, it works both ways. I'd like to see how Lance would do with our 1st team Offense, with all those Weapons who can get open fast
3rd string or not, looking good is better than the alternative
Most fans, coaches, managers, team owners and analysts of the NFL don't understand how intelligent Trey Lance is. He doesn't need 50 or so NFL games to get better like other NFL quarterback rookies need in order to improve. Trey gets better once he has read the defense and his own offensive players of their weaknesses and strengths, protecting the football during that time. Once he knows what receiver is getting open more often and what side of the offensive line is weak and allowing defensive players through which might take a few possessions, then he goes on the attack with much more aggression and confidently marches the team down the field to score points.
Trey Lance will be very difficult for other teams to scout and analyze because Trey is much smarter than they are. He adjusts from one possession to another according to what he sees and analyzes while playing and while he's on the sideline. In other words, he is outsmarting the plans of other teams and doing his own thing to win games.
Shanahan understands Trey but because of injuries, Trey hasn't been able to be on the field for more than 5 quarters as a starting quarterback and unfortunately for him, Jimmy also got injured soon after he replaced him and then the 3rd string quarterback who Shanahan saw during preseason games and new Brock's history, shined on the field to extend the win streak until he had a season ending injury.
All of a sudden, Brock Purdy became the hero so Shanahan, who still loves Trey Lance and his intelligent playing, has to show that he loves Brock Purdy now. When you listen to Shanahan, he isn't bragging about either player but since everyone wants a hero on the team to win another Super Bowl since 1995, they don't care about Shanahan, Trey Lance or that Jimmy Garoppolo was the only quarterback since Colin Kaepernick to get the team to the Super Bowl for a 50% chance of winning it.
Trey is understanding scheme much better, and that's why he's able to make successful reads. His intelligence is helping him learn and apply scheme, along with a ton of hard work to get there.
Agree he's learning quickly from the relatively few reps he's getting, and that too is a definite sign of intelligence, but I think you may be overstating things somewhat.
That said, we both agree he's smart and hope he succeeds.
Brock and Sam are also highly intelligent but are vastly more experienced and that's why they're better QBs today.
But Trey is most definitely catching up, and that's highly impressive.
We didn't watch the same game. Th estupid pick? The pick that the linebacker broke so early on that he actually over-ran the pick? Multiple sub-optimal decisions during his time in the game. But, in the end, the Broncos blew a coverage and you're acting like did something. Please...
Whoa... Relax a little, yeah?
No, you didn't watch the same game. Your comment has so much anger and hate dog. Chill out. He won't be on the team soon and you can ride the Brock cock harder bro.
Unbalanced takes for 600, Alex.
We didnt watch the same youtube video be cause johnnydel covers this play already lmao. Imagine opening your mouth not watching the entire video.
Dagg you got hTe in your all in your Spirit.. you want Lance to fail so bad it’s borderline evil dude like why are you so upset.. he made a couple bad decisions many Starter NFL QBs do … so they can throw interceptions or throw a bad look but Trey has to be perfect every snap ? Jimmy did shii like that for years
I like this kid, but I'm just not sure I see the quick processing necessary to be a big time NFL QB here. Yes, there was some improvement over the Raiders debacle, but he still has numerous plays where he makes either incorrect or just flat out wrong reads and I'm sorry, at some point you need to show serious improvement or just admit what you have. The several plays where he did not even throw the ball to the flat on the correct side of the field are very basic simple reads that should simply not take years of experience to have locked down already. And he continues to often just lock in on receivers, which makes it very easy for DB's to read his eyes and make dangerous plays on a good number of his throws.
Bro that’s Ty Davis price that’s not Christian Mcaffrey or Elijah mitchel … he can correct that will film … Jimmy use to make quick reads and throw a lot of Dumb interceptions… no Qb will always be perfect you act like he threw a pick ignoring the Check down .. Listen bro 49ers didn’t win a Super Bowl in a while you can’t check down a Super Bowl Win … you being unfair period blank .. Trey has a arm and will use it and will get more comfortable as he plays and understands what’s immediately gonna be more open …
He didn’t not make dangerous plays on a good number of throws I’ll give you 2 stop capping
You don’t like Trey just say that your mind already made up … Trey will have to complete every pass and see everything and avoid every pressure and never throw a pick worthy play because no other starting Qb on the Niners or in the league for that matter Has done that right 😅
