I think by most backpackers definition now days, ultralight means spending as much as you can on every single piece of kit.
My first backpacking trip i was inspired by bear grylls and man vs wild. I took a tarp, a water bottle, a knife, and a lighter and spent the weekend in the woods. I guarantee you it weighed less than 10 lbs and i had never even heard of the term ultralight.
Mayfly sandals are a perfect example. I made a pair out of an old election sign and some paracord. But on the trail they wouldnt look as cool because people would know i didnt spend the 50 bucks or whatever they cost.
I find it incredible that someone would spend 1000 usd on a tent.
You can also make gear feel ultralight by actually doing a little bit of training and getting stronger. Get use to carrying a 50 lb pack and 20 pounds feels like nothing.

ultra light means spending the most money you can for gear and sacrificing with a uncomfortable backpack and not having extra clothes or other creature items like you have no battery bank or camera or phone its how much suck do you want and how much do you want to pay for the privilege of being ultra light its not hard to do at all just are you willing to deal with the gear and its shortcomings plus you never added trekking poles which you need for the tent

To those thinking it's lazy to hike light, Note not everyone has the strenght to carry heavy for different reasons. Over time you'll want to go light for the sole reason of comfort. I've always carried heavy and pretty fit. But nowadays i enjoy my hikes more while hiking light simply because it's more fun and i have time to play around on the trail while hiking.

I wouldn't say it's lazy, I'd say it's expensive and probably not necessary. For most folks, you'd probably be best to just focus on the couple big things like sleeping accommodations and keeping everything else to a minimum.

@@SmallSpoonBrigadeCan be necessary if you want to hike and camp when you’re disabled. @@SmallSpoonBrigadehealth issues and age can be a factor. Ignoring cost, which is absolutely a valid concern for many, like sure I COULD hike a 30lb pack. But then I’ll be miserable for the entire trip because my nerve pain is screaming at me. Or I could hike lighter, and I irritate my sensitivities a lot less, and be in significantly less pain (and enjoy the trip). I’m only 29, but a ton of unnecessary weight would make it my problem.
That said, I couldnt afford all this gear either! I need to opt for secondhand where I can, save to invest in a couple critical things (like a good mattress pad and a pack that is comfortable), find cheaper alternatives etc.
There isn’t anything wrong with carrying a heavier pack if you can/want to. But even so, you gotta respect the sheer efficiency of ultralight gear. Why bring a 5 pound chair when I can bring that same function for a single pound? Presuming I can afford it, why wouldn’t I spring for the lighter gear lol

Cool to see your UL gear. I have some heavier gear, specially the tent and backpack, but I achieved under 4.5 too because I don't carry, compared with the gear you listed: chair (but I just bought one today because of you and Dan!), water filter (just a tiny bottle of bleach), pillow (I use a bag with my down jacket as stuffing) and my down sleeping bag (Aegismax) is lighter and my burner is a unnoticeable, in weight terms, alcohol "cat stove". And my gear is more comfortable than ever, thanks to the sleeping bag and the inflatable matress, finally an isolated Klymit that is perfect (I tried firts with that Uberlite you show, but It was a bit flat in the mornings and the pump bag was defective or bad design, it leaked so much that was useless, a big disappointment).

It's been a while, but I found that an indoor bike did wonders for my stamina on the trail. As long as the weight is on the hips, not the back, you have proper form and you get the weight all the way off your feet for a few minutes every hour, you can go a surprising distance without much trouble.

I will NEVER understand the concept of "ultra light" backpacking. WHY IN THE HELL would ANYONE even care how much weight they carry, not to mention why the hell does it have to be 10lbs or less. I have hiked the Appalachian trail for a WEEK with friends and had AT LEAST 20LBS or more on me, especially when I was carrying the backpacks of two girls when they got too tired, and I was still able to hike all day long with ZERO issues. When I was in the Army and had to go out in the field, I'd have NO LESS then 40-50lbs on me and STILL had zero issues. So what's the deal with it being 10lbs or less? Are these people just so damn WEAK they're incapable of hiking with any more weight or something? I mean WHY try and leave out so much stuff that would make your trip SO much easier on you? It just makes no sense to me. I'd MUCH rather take the things I need and whatever I needed to be COMFORTABLE and the trip enjoyable than worry about weight. If I had to put a minimum weight on the stuff I'd take with me, it would probably be no less than 20-25lbs. And even that would be nothing.

My goal is to take my time, enjoy my moment in nature and with nature and set camps for long term goals - something that ultralight camping cannot accomplish.

By that logic when I was bad off I had about 11 pounds total. 6 pounds bike, tarp several Oz, random clothes including socks and old gloves several Oz, walking stick a pound, coat 1 pound, frying pan half pound, bungee cord, lighter, tape, towel, tiny flashlight, batteries, toothbrush, tin foil, knife, sunscreen, bugspray, trash bags, basic medical stuff and phone charger another pound. Not ultralight but close.

The ultralight term should be changed to percentages. A 5'2 115 pound woman will have to carry less than a 6'4 220 pound man. She can carry smaller tent, pack and sleep system. Even if he buys the same things in a larger size thats pounds on. He cant physically use anything small, he won't fit.

Ultra lightweight in Britain isnt really possible. If you don't have a 5000mm waterproof, double skin outer pitch 1st tent your basically going to be soaking wet and freeze to death . So thats like 1.8 kg for a 1man or 3kg for 2/3 man.
I prefer a 3 man between 2 . Its less wait each person than a 1 and you can hold up in comfortably for however long you have to.
