Yes they did put this together. This one in particular they’ve talked about doing it on their own and not having help from Ben Bram who usually helps them arrange. These evolutions and medleys are where Ptx shines over all other a cappella groups. Nobody does transitions and tempo changes like them. More that they have besides the live MJ medley you’ve already seen (although the official is great to see too) are their evolution of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. Also they have *NSYNC medley and their top pop vol1 medley. Which was promo for their top pop album. These are also usually recorded live too so that’s a bonus.

You are really in for a treat with the rest of the “ Evolution of “ series. They all have so many songs from each artist that just sounds like one long song. They are great. Thanks for this. ❤️❤️

This was done live as well. The Evolutions videos were a Pentatonix feature starting with this one. Yes they did them over and over. Avi and Scott both were very annoyingly perfectionist about things like this. Yes this is a specialty of theirs they did themselves.

Love this, they're just genius with their transitions. They can literally do any genre. I've never known a group that gel so well, noone trying to get the front spot etc. I discovered PTX last year (then through them, Home Free) and just love them. I really enjoy the videos that show their personalities.

When they got together they realized that they are very different people who had overlapping interests but also had interests that the others didn't have. So they did/are doing solo things on the side but agreed that PTX came first.
Mitch and Scott did Superfruit back in the day. Now Mitch is soloing as Messer and Scott is forming other a cappella groups. My favorite is AcaPops kids, which is exactly what it sounds like. At some point, please watch their renditions of Shallow and their mashup of Bohemian Rhapsody/Somebody to love. They obviously have Pentatonix in their pedigree even though they range in age from 8 - 16.
I am not fond of Citizen Queen, which is the all-woman group that Scott helped found but that's me. Moving on, Kevin has done a large amount of solo work. Please check out Down to see that. Kirstin has done solo work and has appeared on Broadway. Avi founded A Cappella Academy. (Many of the AcaPops graduated from there.) Matt and his church group released a gospel album last year. So, yeah, they do things solo.

For me, Pentatonix are like musical superheroes. And like all superhero groups they have an origin story. Theirs is called season 3 of NBC's The Sing Off. There you will see the earliest public performances of Pentatonix and the judge's and audience's reaction to them.

If you want to see Pentatonix working together, there are lots of vlog episodes from their early tours. Or there is a recent mini-doc showing recording sessions for their 2021 Christmas album, "The Recording of Evergreen". It's about 15 minutes long. Maybe some minor spoilers for any songs you haven't heard yet, but it's only short snippets.

Their evolution videos are great! My favorite is The Evolution of Michael Jackson. If you want to see them do that live, watch the Popspring performance. It's three original songs and the evolution of Michael Jackson. and, yes, they can do this live.

Pentatonix are mashup geniuses. Simple as that! Well, simple... And yes, they put them together with their arranger Ben Bram. As far as I know Scott and Kevin are the ones mostly involved in the arrangements (and in the past Avi), but they all do the pre-arrangements. They call it "circle jam" where they just jam and improv and record it on their phone and send over to Ben to try and decipher out and clean up. There is a cool video called something along the line of Pentatonix jamming on the fly that I think you would love! Their process is basically the same nowdays except they also make sure to get the arrangements as sheet music so they can all practice on their own.
    Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/GjhdU1rktpg/v-deo.html
Another video of them arranging (but mostly recording) their newest album is this gem: ua-cam.com/video/M60SKKkQLqo/v-deo.html

I agree. Living together in the same apartment complex and grinding to get the thing going on their own for sure shaped their relationship and their music. And gave them a shot at a way better record deal after already having something to show from their youtube instead of being stuck in a reality show deal.

Ben Bram is their co-arranger. I don't know how much he helped them with this, but he has helped them so much with their music. They do 4 takes of their evolution videos and pick the best one. My fave is the "evolution of Ariana Grande". They do love each other like family members, and they love us, their fans, too. They consider us family, too.

If you’d like to listen to a stirring piece of music, you should try Light In The Hallway. It’s somewhat of a lullaby that Scott wrote and Avi takes the spotlight for the entire song as the main lead. I tell you, if your kids are young enough to believe in monsters under their bed, play them this song. Hell, with what’s going on in the world these days, they don’t even have to believe in monsters…or even be kids for that matter.

This was my introduction to them. My daughter’s music teacher showed it to them in class one day and she came home all excited to show me. She knew I was an a Capella geek since following The House Jacks all over San Francisco in the 90s. Their founder, Deke Sharon, produced and consulted on the Sing Off, and worked on Pitch Perfect. Matt was a House Jack at one time. I just like to plug them, because they really started the more modern a Capella sound. And I’m old, so it’s fun to remember my 20s. 😂 They do a fantastic cover of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir.

I heard an interview with the producer who ran the studio they recorded these evolutions in (and Superfruit did their mashups and evolutions in) and she said that they and Ben would arrive with a really solid outline of the arrangement but did a lot of the tight arranging of little moments on the day with them all there. Then sang it and sang it to get all the parts arranged.
This meant it was really fresh in their minds, so when they went to record later in the day they would do 2 or 3 takes and generally the 1st or 2nd would be perfect, but they'd maybe try another 1 or 2 to see if they could improve it any.

They can sing any style or genre. They are also true students of music history, and music theory.

Rather than do a part 2 for the last few months, they should instead do a prequel, wherein they expand the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries into more than two songs. Seriously, they skipped the Renaissance era entirely and did nothing really from the Romantic movement (unless you consider Symphony #5 to be Romantic; it's usually classified as Classical, though some of the same composer's other works are clearly Romantic, e.g., Moonlight Sonata). At least they put in one song from the Baroque era. (I would've preferred BWV 1080, over the one they did, but that's being picky.)
Also, eras and movements aside, there isn't a single thing in there from any kind of cantata, opera, musical, or movie. So how about a "history of theatrical music"?

This was waaay before. A majority of the songs used in the 100 songs video (which is from 2019 I think) are songs that in one way or another has been covered by them. Hence why they could harmonize on the spot like that.
